NFA to ban use of stadia for non-sporting activities

An NFA official, Chidi Offor-Okenwa, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu on Wednesday that the action to ban use of stadia for non-sporting events had become necessary to cut down the cost of maintaining the stadia.

Offor-Okenwa, who is also the Chairman of Enugu State Football Association, said that the federation had succeeded in stopping the state government, political parties and other interest groups from using the stadium.

“The good people of Enugu State and of course, the government of Enugu State appreciates the fact that stadia in Enugu State are purely for sporting activities. We (presently) don’t have a record of hosting religious activities at the main-bowl of Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium.

“In Enugu here, the stadium is actually meant for football; it is meant for athletes, it is meant for indoor games and we appropriately put the facilities in use in that vein. So also for Rangers (International FC, Enugu) camp and of course the UNEC (University of Nigeria Enugu Campus) stadium.

“We ensure that we don’t conduct any religious activity; any unsporting activity in our facilities. And we take that message to all the nooks and crannies of Nigeria to ensure that the (sporting) facilities last and serve the purpose (for) which it was built with the tax payers money,’  he said.’

He said that the federation had warned stadium managers against “unsporting and extraneous activities’’and its implications on the development of sports.

  • Weeping, as Frances Oneya is buried

Weeping, as Frances Oneya is buried

One week after she was gruesomely murdered by armed robbers in Effurun,  Delta state, on Friday, October 1o, the remains of Ms Frances Oneya,  daughter of a former military administrator of Kano state, Brigadier General Dominic Oneya was buried amidst tears last Friday.

The heavens opened and joined hundreds of weeping mourners as they bid farewell to the 35-year-old mother of four, who was laid to rest on in the ancestral home of his grieving father at Ehwerhe-Agbarho, Ughelli North local government area of the state.

Her final journey commenced at the St Jude Catholic Church GRA, Effurun, on Thursday when Rev Fr Emmanuel Tobi led Very Rev Fr Ambrose Abaka Jr and over six other priests to officiate at a very poignant vigil mass for the vivacious lady who was murdered in her prime by armed robbers.

She was on her way from a new generation bank located on PTI Road Effurun, when the hoodlums accosted and fatally shot her on Ovie Palace Road. The hoodlums thought a ‘Ghana-must-go’ bag with which she was carrying her stock of cloths meant for sale was loaded with money.

Several hundreds of family members, friends and acquaintances whose lives and hearts had been touched by the wonderful lady, joined her parents, children and siblings to bid farewell to a woman, whose promising life was snuffed out before her time.

In a stirring tribute at the Requiem Mass held at the St Jude Catholic Church, on Friday October 17, her 17-year-old daughter, Patricia Oghenetega, in a sorrowful voice urged the mourners not to shed much tears for her mother any longer. She remarked that the heavy downpour that heralded the mass and burial was indication that the heavens was united with them in their grief over the death of a woman who sacrificed so much for her children.

“I’ve told myself no more tears, because it hurts to know that she didn’t live for herself but for me and my three brothers. Life was given, and God needed an angel, so I’m content with her not being around. Everybody needs a guardian angel, me and my family now have one.”

Nevertheless, she said she was hopeful that her mother’s killers would soon join her (in death), remarking that death was the end of all men.

Gen Oneya, a former President of the defunct Nigerian Football Association (NFA), who attended the mass with other mourners, including Olorogun O’tega Emerhor and Chief Solomon Edoja, bore his grief with stoic equanimity throughout the mass. He did not betray the sorrow and anguish usually visible when a man is playing the unusual role of a father burying his daughter; he even managed rueful smiles occasionally until the end of the service.

One of Frances’ siblings, Theodora, said she was grateful to God for the four kids that her late sister left behind, adding, “the news of your death reached the ends of the earth and everyone that heard was pained.”

Rev Fr Augustine Eruotor, in his consolatory message, described the late Frances as a woman who took delight in the worship of God. He said: “No human has been able to give the exact time of exit of from earth except God. According to human calculations, it’s always painful when we a loved one departs from earth, but we should be consoled in the fact there is life after death.”

Meanwhile, the burial of the woman last Friday led to widespread call for the state government and the police to take action to tackle crime in the society. Edoja, a former aide to Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan, decried the prevailing spate of insecurity in the state. He called for a manhunt to apprehend the criminals.

Olorogun Emerhor, who lost a son, Ijamani, in a similar incident five year ago, described the young lady’s death as horrible. He said, “It is a horrible and devastating incident, and highlights the existing state of high insecurity. A vibrant young woman went to the bank and never returned alive. Four young children are deprived of motherly care. Our hearts bleed! Only God can console General. Our prayers are with the family.”

Friends and relatives of Ms Oneya also took to the social media to demand action on her killers. One Ijeoma Sheila Philips in her post on Facebook said, “These robbers have murdered sleep, they will never have rest until they are brought to justice.”

Police Public Relations Officer, Delta Command, Celestine Kalu, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, in a telephone chat with our reporter shortly after the incident, had vowed that the criminals would be apprehended and made to face justice.

  • NFA owes my husband N3m

    NFA owes my husband N3m

Wife of the late football administrator, Patrick Okpomo, Mary has blasted the Nigeria Football Association (NFA) for taking advantage of her husband’s goodwill by not paying back a loan  that it owed him before his death.

She spoke at the commissioning of the Delta Football Association (DFA) secretariat in Asaba  on Thursday, saying that the then NFA was still owing her husband N3m.

Recounting how it  all happened, Mrs Okpomo, as she tried fighting back tears, said her husband helped the association secure the loan in 2003 meant to mobilise support for Nigeria towards hosting the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

“I remember that sports was under the office of the vice president who was Atiku Abubakar and it was the period that Nigeria indicated interest to host the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Afterwards, a committee was set up for that purpose which was headed by Segun Odegbami (MON).

“Because of my husband’s influence in football both internationally and locally, he was approached by the committee to help source funds. He took them to the late Chief Nathaniel Idowu (OFR) who gave them N3m because of my husband and the committee promised to pay back. But till now, that money was never paid.

“It is exactly 10 years and 1 month today(September 11) that my husband died. When the money was not forthcoming, my husband was forced to sell his plot of land to pay the money to Idowu because he had his name to protect. The people who collected that money are alive,” she said.

Okpomo’s wife made the revelation in the presence of incumbent NFF president, Aminu  Maigari, one time president, Brigadier General Dominic Oneya (retired) Director-General of  the National Sports Commission, Gbenga Elegbeleye and NFF board members. While she had no cheery words for the NFA, Mary however thanked DFA chairman, Pinnick Amaju for naming the football house after her husband.

“When my husband died, it was Amaju that took it upon himself to make sure that his name is immortalised. I want to seize this opportunity to thank him,” she said.

The Football house was commissioned by Maigari who praised Amaju for the initiative which he agreed was a challenge to other state FAs.

“This is a challenge for all of us here if we are serious about developing the game in all areas. What  we are witnessing today is a privately sponsored initiative with no dime coming from the state government. I believe it is worth emulating,” he said.

Okpomo was a two-time NFA Secretary-General from 1984 to 1987 and 1989 to 1990. He was later appointed sole administrator, saddled with the responsibility of restructuring the body. He also became an instructor at the level of FIFA and CAF.

  • Kojo Williams hits golden age and five

Kojo Williams hits golden age and five

Clocking 55 may not be something to fret about after all; it probably feels like an ecstacy, which can only be experienced when you turn 55. Kojo Williams, the scion of the Williams dynasty and former Chairman of the Nigerian Football Association (NFA), is 55, and has acquired the bragging rights to whatever ecstasy reposes in that proverbial golden age and five. Turning 55 has its perks after all. Even as the ides of youth take a last bow, life unfolds more colourfully with blossoms of closure and hope undiminished for the celebrant.

That was why Kojo Williams observed this crucial turn in his life with total modesty and gratitude for a life full of achievements. He attained 55 a few days ago and quite a number of his friends, family and business associates were disappointed as he spoke of his desire to shun lavish celebration. He scorned any lyrical tribute in his honour, saying he would rather prefer more modest means of appreciating his attainment of 55. However, those who claim to know the man informed Celeb Watch that he’s now closer to God than ever, devoting more of his time to church activities.

  • Foreign assistant for Keshi unnecessary-Dosu

    Foreign assistant for Keshi unnecessary-Dosu

Ex-international, Joseph Dosu, on Friday said that Nigeria Football Association (NFA’s) proposal for a foreign assistant to Coach Stephen Keshi was unnecessary.

Dosu, a former Super Eagles goalkeeper, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the proposal could distract Keshi.

He urged the NFA to allow Keshi to concentrate on the 2014 World Cup coming up in June in Brazil.

“I think the NFA should allow him to do his job because he has always delivered.

“Keshi is a seasoned coach; he has shown us what he can do so far.

“I believe we should allow him to continue with his backroom staffs.

“I know NFA wants the best but it just have to trust Keshi’s judgment,” Dosu said.

NAN reports that NFA recently met with Keshi, the current African Coach of the Year, and proposed employment of a foreign assistant to him.

Keshi, however, turned the offer down, saying that he wanted one of his assistants, Sylvanus Okpala, who was sacked in 2013, to be recalled to the team. Keshi is currently working with Daniel Amokachi, Ike Shorunmu and Valere Houandinou as his assistants.

Fans did not attack our bus – Eagles’ media officer

•Says South Africans have been wonderful

The Nigeria Football Association (NFA) has described as false and baseless, the reported attack on the bus conveying the Super Eagles players to their hotel, after the match against South Africa.

Nigeria had beaten host South Africa, 3-1 on Jan. 19 at the Cape Town Stadium, to qualify for the quarterfinal of the Africa Nations Championship (CHAN).

The Media officer of the Eagles, Ben Alaiya, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Cape Town on Monday that the team’s bus was not attacked.

“In fact, in spite of defeating their team, the Bafana Bafana, the South African fans cheered us when we were leaving the stadium. They waved at us and greeted us warmly. Nobody attacked our bus. South Africans have been wonderful hosts and we appreciate their hospitality,’’ he said.

Alaiya said the Eagles were accorded warm reception since their arrival at Cape Town for CHAN by the Nigerian community and the South Africans.

  • 2014 fifa World Cup: NFA pleased with Flamingoes’ foes

2014 fifa World Cup: NFA pleased with Flamingoes’ foes

The Nigeria Football Association (NFA) has expressed satisfaction with the draw of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup that pitched the under-17 national team with Mexico, Colombia and China PR.

NFA’s Chief Technical Officer, Abdulrafiu Yusuf, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Abuja that the draws were a good one for the team known as the Flamingoes.

NAN recalls that the draws were held on December 17 at the Antigua Aduana, San Jose, Costa Rica. It is for the fourth edition of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup billed to hold in Costa Rica from March 15 to April 4.

“The draw is a good one for Nigeria because we have an Asian team and two South American teams there and I don’t think the South Americans will give us a problem. It is only China I see that might want to prove a little bit hard because they pace well; but we have players on ground to douse their threat,’’ Yusuf said.

He, however, noted that though the team did not play any qualifying match to test their strength, they had no cause to worry.

NAN recalls that the team qualified automatically for the World Cup without playing any qualifiers after South Sudan withdrew from the African qualifiers.

“Luckily for us, we still have about four or five of the players that were in the 2012 edition who made the team. So, we will use them as the base of the team to build the other players around them,’’ Yusuf said.

NAN recalls that the Flamingoes crashed out of the 2012 edition in Azerbaijan in the quarter-final stage after losing to France 3-5 on penalties.

“They will resume camp on January 6 and will remain in camp all through, till they go for the tournament. Also, there are local and international friendly matches being organised for them and there will be an eight-nation tournament coming up in February. So, we are hopeful that the practice will herald their better performance when the tournament starts,’’ Yusuf said.

However, coach of Kogi United FC, Fatai Remo advised the NFA to ensure that the team undergoes adequate preparation.

“Thank God, we are not facing the consequences of appointing the coach late; this is probably due to the fact that we are a power house in female football in Africa. But it will be a different ball game on the World stage, so we need to put a lot of effort into the team’s preparation. I think we will be able to scale through from the group after which we will pick up from there,’’ Osho told NAN.

A sports journalist, Rilwan Abdusalam, told NAN that with good preparation and exposure to friendly games, we should be confident that the team would be able to surpass its previous feat.

“We have been able to up our game in that category at the 2010 and 2012 editions, unlike at the inaugural edition in 2008 when we just went there to complete the numbers. This shows that we have improved a bit over the years and looking at the draw and the records of the teams we have been drawn with, China is the only country that can match our pedigree.

“This is because they are respected for their fast pace football and their strength and stamina level at that age category cannot be compared to any other team in the group. But with good and early preparation and exposure to friendly matches, I see our girls surpassing our quarter-final record,’’ Abdulsalam said.

NAN reports that the World Cup will be played across four stadia, three in San Jose and one in Liberia, from March 15 to April 4.

Nigeria will start its campaign at the mundial on March 16 against China PR and face Colombia on March 19, both in San Jose.

The Flamingoes will play their last group match against Mexico on March 23 in Liberia, to finish the first round of the tournament.

Jordan is to use the match to prepare for their 2014 FIFA World Cup play-off fixture against the fifth-placed team in the South American qualifying campaign.

Nigeria is also using the game to prepare for the 2014 CHAN taking place in South Africa in January.

According to the statement, Keshi had invited three goalkeepers, eight defenders, nine midfielders and eight strikers.

  • Alleged use of ineligibilE player 3SC threaten legal action against NFA, LMC, Rangers

Alleged use of ineligibilE player 3SC threaten legal action against NFA, LMC, Rangers

The management of Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) of Ibadan has reminded Nigeria Football Association (NFA), League Management Company (LMC) and Rangers management about the ineligibility of goalkeeper Emmanuel Daniel yet to be cleared from club.

The management of Oluyole Warriors alleged that goalkeeper Emmanuel Daniel joined Rangers without due process, stressing that the player has been using for league matches without their permission.

The club’s Administrative Secretary, Demola Alabi said the decision of the authorities to keep quiet over the issue fuelling speculations that attempts were being made to sweep the matter under the carpet.

Alabi added that the Oluyole Warriors management would be forced to initiate a legal action if the aforementioned bodies refuse to act on the matter.

“The NFA, LMC and NPFL are yet to act on the petition sent by 3SC on illegal fielding of goalkeeper Emmanuel Daniel by Enugu Rangers for its confederation and NPFL matches. Three weeks after the petition was sent, the three football governing bodies have not deemed necessary to act on the petition, thus fuelling speculations that attempts were being made to sweep the matter under the carpet.

3SC management would not hesitate to seek legal means, if the aforementioned bodies fail to act on time,” Alabi letter reads.
