    NFF congress moved to Abuja

The general assembly of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has  been moved to Abuja from Warri, but it will not be an elective congress.

This decision was agreed after a meeting with top government officials on Sunday in Abuja.

AfricanFootball.com has gathered that against the orders of Sports Minister Tammy Danagogo that NFF elections be conducted on Tuesday in Abuja, the meeting agreed that the highest ruling body of Nigerian football will now design a road map for the elections to take place not later than two weeks after the general assembly.

The 44-man congress is expected to deal with the integrity issues concerning an electoral committee headed by Amoni Biambo and ensure that all those who are interested in vying for positions on the executive committee are given the chance to do so as against the previous experience where nomination forms were sneaked to only a select few.

The congress will also decide on a coach for the country’s two 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Congo and South Africa next month after a new contract has not been finalised with Stephen Keshi.

Before Sunday’s meeting, Nigerian football had risked another FIFA  ban two months after the country was suspended again on account of direct government interference.

NFF Elections: Pascal, Biambo disagree on election date

The last is certainly not heard of the drama that is engulfing the electoral process into the next board of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) as a member of the electoral committee, and former Nigeria international Pascal Patrick has strongly disagreed with the stand of the chairman of the committee, Amoni Biambo.

Pascal, who was only reinstated into the committee having been removed by the Mike Umeh led faction of the NFF, says the election can only be held in September, as proposed by the NFF, contrary to the stand of Biambo.

Pascal said: “The elections can only be held in September as proposed by the NFF and will be ratified by the congress on Tuesday.

“It is really baffling how the chairman of the committee will make a unilateral decision without members of his committee, it is not done.”

Meanwhile, Amoni Biambo insists that the August 26 date remains sacrosanct for the elections to be held and rebuffed claims that FIFA is supporting the NFF’s position.

“The way FIFA is being bandied around is really amusing to say the least. We as the electoral committee have written to FIFA informing them of the electoral process and also to the elective congress,” he said.

“The date remains sacrosanct and nobody can change it because the NFF will have to give a thirty day notice to the congress for ratification before any change is effected and that hasn’t been done.”

Biambo also alleged that the reason why the election is being postponed is down to corruption.

“It bleeds my heart to see the amount of corruption in the system. But they have seen now that I cannot be turned and they are regretting why they made me chairman of the committee,” he added.

There seems to be some sort of impasse as it regards the whole process and it remains to be seen what will happen on Tuesday, August 26.

    Gabros charts way forward

Former vice chairman of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF)  Gabriel Chukwuma has claimed that he has the antidote to the unending crisis rocking Nigerian football, his aide and coordinator of Gabros International FC of Nnewi, Olisa Onuchukwu has posited.

Onuchukwu, a retired footballer and agent, told SportingLife that things shouldn’t have degenerated to this level if the various stakeholders had listened to Chukwuma 10 years ago.

He stated that the recent fire incident at the NFF secretariat threw Chukwuma off balance and he felt deeply pained by problems that have bedevilled Nigerian football in recent times.

The coordinator added that the billionaire business mogul was ready  to proffer a lasting solution to the crisis rocking Nigerian football if consulted.

According to Onuchukwu, Chukwuma foresaw the crisis 10 years ago when he resigned his membership of the NFF.

Onuchukwu said Chukwuma is a gifted strategist as evidenced by his advisory impact regarding the obscurity to global ascension of Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing (IVM) where he is the vice chairman of the conglomerate as well as the continued sponsorship of Gabros FC for over 20 years.

“Chukwuma is a knowledgeable football guru and one of the genuine stakeholders of Nigerian football. Therefore, I’m calling on the  Minister of Sports to take a bold step now and save the game from total annihilation by sending a powered delegation of other stakeholders to consult Chukwuma to proffer the lasting solution to the endless crisis,” Onuchukwu said.

Rollins Biambo roars: NFF election will hold August 26 unfailingly

    • Clears Umeh, Odegbami
    • Maigari, Ogunjobi not cleared

Nigeria Football Federation(NFF) Electoral Committee headed by Amoni Rollins Biambo has dispelled the rumours going round that the August 26th, NFF elections will be shifted. He has said the elections will hold as planned at the same date and venue.

The Chairman of the Committee, who addressed the press at the Bolton White Apartment, Zone 7, Abuja yesterday, said nothing would make his committee to shift the date of the election whether anybody likes it or not because of football sake.

The five point communiqué read shortly after the parley with the sporting press which lasted for just 30 minutes and ended 6.10pm reads thus:

“We also categorically state that August 26  still remains the proper date for the election. The date is sacrosanct as this date has been communicated to FIFA, CAF and WAFU. We are mindful of all internal wrangling amongst executive board members and the football family. The electoral committee as an unbiased umpire will do justice to the electoral process as entrenched in the electoral code to all concerned.

“That the purported/rumoured extension of timetable in some quarters is false and not negotiable.

As a committee that believes in fair play and respects the rule of law, we have taken into consideration all situations to conduct free, fair and credible elections.”

Biambo, in the communiqué , also cleared NFF Vice President Mike Umeh and Segun Odegbami and added  Christopher Giwa that was initially cleared. There are now three persons cleared while Taiwo Ogunjobi was not cleared since his name was not mentioned.

The incumbent NFF President, Aminu Maigari was said to have purchased a form but did not submit while Ogunjobi was said to be banned as at the time the forms were sold so he couldn’t obtain a form. Although he was later unbanned but the time for collection of forms has since elapsed which ruled him out of the race.

“Having followed due process of 60 days period before the elections into the Executive committee, having collected/collated all nominations forms from various interested candidates, vying for different positions into the executive committee, having screened all candidates that submitted their nomination forms to the committee, including those  forms that were later collected cum-submitted within the grace period of extension.

“Having published the list of provisionally qualified candidates for the election, having received  the report/recommendations of the electoral protests/appeal committee of the Nigeria Football Federation, we hereby categorically state that Mike Umeh and  Segun Odegbami are cleared to contest as President and member respectively”, it said.

The communiqué also stressed that “as an independent electoral committee solely saddled with the responsibility of conducting an election into all arms of the federation as it is stipulated in the statutes of the federation, we have given all  interested candidates a free level playing ground in the executive committee election.”

    Police investigate NFF fire

The Nigeria Police Force(NPF) have begun investigation into the fire which gutted the office of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) yesterday morning.

Assistant Police Commissioner Abubakar Baba made this known at the scene of the fire incident: “We have begun investigations into the fire that gutted the office of the NFF in Abuja in the morning (Wednesday).

“We have not made any arrests but we hope to ascertain what caused this fire among other things.”

The offices of the NFF general secretary as well as that of the chief accountant were gutted by fire. It took more than an hour before fire fighters could put out the inferno.

“The fire started from the chief accountant’s office as I was told,” said NFF general secretary Musa Amadu.

“I just arrived the office and saw the smoke and was not allowed to go upstairs obviously for safety reasons. Members of staff  would have been able to reduce the impact of the damage, but could not gain access into my office and as such could not quench or trace where the smoke was coming from.

“But we must not engage in blame games and thank God that no life was lost. But this is sad and unfortunate.”

NFF president Aminu Maigari and some of his officials visited the scene of the incident.

•Maigari, NFF Accountant rule out sabotage
•No money was burnt, says Accountant-General

The Glasshouse Secretariat of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) yesterday was gutted by fire. The fire, which started at about 9.30 am, started from the third floor office of the accountant.

The inferno, which destroyed all the documents in the accountant’s office, extended to the office of the General Secretary, also destroying most of the documents in the office and all the offices on the left wing of the building.

The General Secretary Musa Amadu, who was  on ground to salvage some of the documents in his office, said they were able to rescue most of the trophies that the  national teams most especially the African Nations Cup (AFCON) won by the Super Eagles last year in South Africa.

He said: “It is an unfortunate incident. The fire started as early as 9.30am, and before the fire service men could come, the damage had been done. But we thank God no life was lost, we were able salvage the AFCON trophy that the Super Eagles won last year, the U-17 World Cup that we won in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) last year among others.

“ I think the fire may have started from a power surge that happened at about that time. We tried as much as we could, but it is quite unfortunate.

“As I have assured you, we are going to reassess those things that were burnt, and those missing. But we want to assure Nigerians that the jobs of the Federation workers would not be affected in any way, we would continue our normal duties until we get to the root of the whole thing. I once again assure all Nigerians that we would get over all these” he said.

In his reaction on arrival at the Secretariat at about 11.45 am, NFF President Aminu Maigari gave thanks to God that no life was lost.  “We are grateful to God Almighty that no life was lost in the fire incident. We are optimistic that we would get over this incident, and I am sure  the security agencies would step in immediately to investigate what  happened. But, it is rather unfortunate. We are grateful to Almighty God that no life was lost”.

On the immediate decision that the Board of the Federation would take, Musa said:“It is not a matter of immediate decision, it is for us to sit down as a Board and invite the security agencies to come and see things themselves and investigate it further for us to know the next step to take to see that the Federation’s activities return back to normal.

“But, we as a board, we have to sit down and know the steps to be taken”.

He insisted that the incident would not affect the Super Eagles as they prepare to take on their Congolese and South African counterparts in the  AFCON 2015 qualifier

The Falconets are doing well, and they are poised to continue to do the country proud, the Super Eagles are beginning their AFCON trophy defense next month. We here are supporting them morally, financially and with prayers. We are optimistic that this would not affect them in any way”.

Maigari appealed to  the board members to come together to salvage the ugly situation that is facing the Federation now, for the interest of the game and the country.

Maigari  ruled out sabotage in the incident, saying it is purely an act of God. “I don’t want to blame anybody for  this. Let us take it as an act of God until the security agencies complete their job. I think that would facilitate our action”.

Also, the NFF’s Accountant, Andelkin Christopher, ruled out any sabotage whatsoever, saying it is all a matter of co-incidence.

“Look at it from this angle, the fire started from my office. I just resumed in the office only last three weeks. In the actual sense, no one has access to my office unless the cleaners and no one puts on any of the appliances until I come to the office. So, the incident would have to be properly investigated before we jump to conclusions”.

The leader of the Fire Service Agency, Julius.O. Opetunsin, said  the cause of the inferno cannot be determined now, until  a full investigation has been carried out on the incident. “You cannot determine the cause of the fire now, until a full investigation has been completed.

“This would be after sometime, because we cannot just jump to conclusions now. What I can tell you is that we were able to put off the fire which started at the left wing of the building. Due to our quick response, we were able to salvage a lot of things”.

This, he said, was as a result of their quick response to the NFF’s distress call.

“I got the call at exactly 9.58 am. I dispatched my men at Games village, Asokoro and another back up to the building. They got here at 10.15am, and before then, we had officials from the Federal fire service that were already on ground. It was a combined force between the FCT fire services and the federal fire services.”

He said if the NFF needs any investigation, they would have to write to the FCT Minister who would order it. He did not fail to blame the deficiency in the building being responsible for the inability to salvage the situation before the arrival of the firemen.

“It is quite unfortunate that in a building like this, there are no fire extinguishers and hose reels. If there were hose reels here, the staff would have been able to salvage the fire before our arrival. It is just for them to roll it out and combat the fire in whatever offices  affected,” he said.

The representative of the Accountant General of the Federation, who is also a Deputy Director, claimed that nothing serious happened.

His words: “We came to assess the situation here (NFF Secretariat) as we have been sent by the Accountant General of the Federation. I could see that nothing serious happened here. I was told that no life was lost and no money was lost too, so nothing happened.”

    • Maigari: Our programmes will not be affected

Director –General of the National Sports Commission,  Gbenga Elegbeleye and the Chairman of Senate Committee on Sports, Senator Adamu Gumba were among the first prominent Nigerians to commiserate with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) over the fire outbreak in the Glass House on yesterday morning.

They both spoke when a team led by NFF President,  Aminu Maigari called at their offices to inform them of the fire disaster. The NFF team also included members of the Executive Committee,   Emeka Inyama,  Suleiman Yahaya-Kwande,  Yusuf Ahmed Fresh and Ayodeji Tinubu, and the General Secretary,  Musa Amadu.

Elegbeleye thanked God that no life was lost in the incident, which started with smoke spiraling out of one of the offices on the second floor before it became uncontrollable.

“We commiserate with you over this disaster but we are grateful to God that no life was lost. Our hope and prayer is that this should not have any serious effect on the programmes of the NFF,” Elegbeleye said.

Senator Gumba spoke in similar vein, even as he congratulated Maigari and his team for overcoming the recent crisis that threatened to tear Nigeria football apart.

Responding, Maigari assured that he had personally assessed the impact of the fire outbreak and that the programmes of the NFF and Nigeria football will not be affected.

“It is sad but we still have to be grateful to Almighty Allah. For one, no life was lost, and also, the impact is such that though a few offices including the General Secretary’s office were affected, this is not enough to affect any of our programmes.

“All we need to do is to get the Falconets going in the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup and to prepare the Super Eagles for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, and the U-17 boys for their African U-17 Championship qualifiers.”

    Keshi’s contract saga still ‘unresolved’

Stephen Keshi has admitted he is not clear about his future with Nigeria and as such he may not be in charge of the Super Eagles for next month’s 2015 African Nations Cup qualifiers.

Nigeria hosts Congo on September 6 and travels to South Africa four days later to meet Bafana as places at Morocco 2015 gather momentum.

A 23-man squad has been announced for the qualifiers and the Nigeria Football Fderation president, Aminu Maigari, said the call-ups were made by Keshi and wants the coach’s contract negotiations to be concluded in good time.

But Keshi told africanFootball.com his situation is far from resolved.

Keshi and the NFF entered into contract talks last week, but talks have been stalled due to the crisis that has rocked the federation.

“I don’t know when I would be returning to Nigeria because things don’t seem to be clear yet,” he maintained.

“But right now as I speak to you I am enjoying the comfort of my home and just waiting on my managers to alert me on the next line of action.”

He further insisted a new and improved contract has to be in place before he could return to his post.

“I cannot just resume duty when talks have not been concluded,” said Keshi, whose first contract ended at the World Cup in Brazil.

“The federation is offering me exactly what they offered two years ago. I don’t think that is wise or a contract renewal.”

Elderson Echiejile and Chinedu Obasi have been called up to the 23-man roster of the national team for next month’s 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Congo and South Africa.

AS Monaco defender Echiejile returns to the setup of the African champions for the first time since he missed the 2014 FIFA World Cup due to injury.

Obasi and Nosa Igiebor also make a return to the Super Eagles after missing out on the Mundial.

Lille OSC goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama is also included the 23-man team and will captain the Super Eagles in the absence of Joseph Yobo.

The list released by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) on Tuesday also included defenders Kenneth Omeruo and Efe Ambrose, midfielders Ogenyi Onazi and John Obi Mikel and forwards Ahmed Musa and Emmanuel Emenike.

Onazi, the midfield powerhouse who suffered a terrible injury in the round of 16 defeat by France, is now fully recovered, but Michael Babatunde, who was stretchered off against Argentina after a hand injury, is left out.

Home-based quartet Chigozie Agbim, Azubuike Egwuekwe, Kunle Odunlami and Gbolahan Salami, who were part of Nigeria’s third place finish at the African Nations Championship in Cape Town earlier in the year, also have an opportunity to return to Cape of Good Hope and shine. They are joined by Enugu Rangers marksman Osaguona Ighodaro as the lot from the domestic League.

Nigeria play Congo’s Red Devils – restored to the race after Rwanda were found guilty of using an ineligible player – in Calabar on September 6 before flying to Cape Town to take on Bafana Bafana on September 10.

The contract between Adidas and the NFF runs out this year and the former has stated that it will not renew its relationship with the football federation.

“I can confirm that Adidas has decided not to renew the contract with the NFF and we wish them all the best for the future,” Public Relations Manager, Adidas SA, Gugu Ntuli, told supersport.com on Friday.

However, supersport.com can also confirm that a letter dated August 12, 2014 signed by Adidas Vice President, Global Sports Marketing Football, Claus-Peter Mayer and Marketing Manager Federations and Leagues, Kai-Philipp Stief and addressed to the NFF, stated it will not extend the existing contract once it elapses on the last day of December.

Based on this evaluation and in combination with the recent correspondence between the parties we regret to inform you that Adidas has decided not to extend its current partnership with the Nigeria Football Federation as per the end of the agreement (i.e. 31 December 2014),” Adidas informed in its letter.

Adidas, however assured the NFF of its faithfulness to serve off the terms of existing contract.

“Adidas will continue to fulfill its obligations under the agreement as previously communicated and respectfully request the Nigeria Football Federation to do the same for the remainder of the contract period (including the obligation to share any third party offer pursuant to Adidas’ right of first refusal),” the sports kit manufacturing organisation stated.
