The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) will on Jan. 31 inspect the facilities of the country’s four clubs involved in continental competitions this year, an official said on Tuesday.

NFF’s Head of Inter-club Activities, Emmanuel Adesanya, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja that four NFF officials would carry out the simultaneous inspection.

NAN reports that Enyimba International FC of Aba and Kano Pillars FC are representing Nigeria in the CAF Champions League. Also, Warri Wolves FC and Bayelsa United FC of Yenagoa will play in the CAF Confederation Cup.

Adesanya said the four officials would inspect the stadiums and hotels the four clubs would use for their home matches.

“Rafiu Yusuf, an NFF Chief Technical Officer, will be inspecting the Warri Township Stadium for Warri Wolves while I (Adesanya) will be inspecting the Samson Siasia Stadium in Yenagoa for Bayelsa United.

“Siji Lagunju, the other Chief Technical Officer, will inspect the Enyimba International Stadium in Aba for Enyimba International FC. Lawrence Katken, who is of the Competitions Department and also Secretary of the Nigeria National League (NNL), will be in Kano to inspect the Sani Abacha Stadium for Kano Pillars,” Adesanya said.

He said the essence of the inspection was to ensure that the facilities were in good condition.

“We are expecting CAF to come for the final inspection by the first week in February, but we want to inspect the facilities first. This is to protect our image at the continental stage and to also ensure that our players and officials get good reception too when they go for their away matches,” Adesanya said.

NAN reports that the first round first leg matches in the CAF Champions League will hold between Feb. 7 and Feb. 9, with the return leg fixed for between Feb. 14 and Feb. 16.

  • Nigerian coaches plan CAF license courses

The National President of the Nigerian Football Coaches Association, Bitrus Bewarang, has promised that the body will help enhance the knowledge of local coaches, by organising courses for them.

Bewarang specifically promised that in the year, that his Association would organize the CAF license courses to enable coaches meet up with those from other African countries:

“We are very much behind in this aspect. We commend the NFF for their efforts so far in ensuring that our Coaches are graded in the last two years,” he said in a statement made available to futaa.com.

“But this year, we would take it upon ourselves to organise these courses for our Coaches, so that many of them would be graded before the end of the year. This is to enable us meet the CAF deadline,” he concluded.

I, my son don’t have problems with NFF – Iheanacho’s father

    From Tunde Liadi,Owerri

The father of the former Golden Eaglets’ star, James Iheanacho has stated that he is yet to be notified that himself and his son, Kelechi have any problem with the Nigeria Football Federation(NFF).

It was exclusively reported by SportingLife that the NFF had given directives that Kelechi be blanked from the various national teams over the player’s headstrong and alleged pomposity in the wake of his recent rise to fame.

It was alleged that the player never answers calls and has also been allowing his father to run his footballing career for him without due recourse to the practice for transfer dealings.

Speaking with SportingLife on telephone, Iheanacho senior opined that his relationship with the NFF headed by Alhaji Aminu Maigari, remains very cordial and that he even saw and chatted with the NFF president during the last CAF Awards without malice.

He said that in the light of the report making the rounds that it was his greed that made him to pick Manchester City instead of the popular FC Porto, Iheanacho senior hinted that he was only guiding his son so that he doesn’t make a wrong decision that he may later regret.

“I don’t have any problem with the NFF and I believe they don’t have problem with me either. I was with the NFF president during the CAF Awards and we chatted freely without malice. Whoever is trying to create problems where there is none should better watch it.

“I am not aware that the NFF has banned by son from the national teams. I am only guiding my son so that he doesn’t make an unpopular decision that he later regrets,” the senior Iheanacho told SportingLife.

HotSports appointed official media (non-match) partner of NFF

Nigeria’s leading sports properties management and production company, HotSports Nigeria Limited, has secured rights as the Official Media (non-match) Partner of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). This was announced at a joint Press Conference addressed by the Nigeria Football Federation and HotSports.

With its new status as the Official Media (non-match) Partner of the Nigeria Football Federation, HotSports is at liberty to be at eall the Nigeria national football teams events to film and observe activities within the camp of the various teams as they prepare for competitions across the world without interfering with the job of the technical staff of NFF and the players.

According to Taye Ige, CEO of HotSports, this initiative was informed by the desire to provide richer programmes offering on television to football fans and bridge the gap between super stars and their fans. With this, he said, a whole new window has been created for the supporters of the various Nigerian national football teams who view HotSports’ programmes on television to become integrated in the daily lives of the players by allowing them insight into the world of the Nigerian stars.

Ige said: “HotSports will be there when the players wake up in the camp, have their meals, train, during tactical sessions, warm up and moments before games. With this development, fans are offered the opportunity to feel part of the process as they also share in the success of the teams. Beginning with FIFA Brazil 2014 World Cup, exciting times await football fans as they would have access to details of activities of players in camp as they prepare for different tournaments.”

Ige maintained that the partnership which spans three years would deliver enormous benefits not only to football fans but all the parties involved, including the country’s football.

General Secretary of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Musa Amadu, represented by Demola Olajire, Director of Information, Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), praised HotSports for the laudable initiative. He said the company was granted the exclusive rights because of its pedigree.

“It is a partnership that we are convinced will add value to the country’s football,” Amadu said.

  • I’m not desperate – Lulu

    I’m not desperate – Lulu

The former President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Sani Lulu Abdullahi, has said he is not desperate but destined to return to his former post as president of Nigeria’s football governing body.

Sani Lulu stated this while responding to questions about his desperation to return to the Glass House at his home town, Idah yesterday at the finals of the FOSLA U-13 Cup.

Lulu, who hinted that he was only succumbing to intense pressure from the football family and stakeholders to return to the Glass House, said he had made up his mind to return to the position he lost to impeachment in 2010.

He argued that his record as NFF boss are incomparable with that of the current Aminu Maigari-led NFF as there was all-round success and no complaints from any quarter.

According to him, “Once again, I have heeded the clarion call. It is a call to national duty. Football is a game I love with passion and my achievements when I was the NFF President before I was forcibly impeached are still very visible.

“If Nigerians that realized the positive contributions I made towards the growth of the game of football in the country want me to return to my former position, then, I have no option than to oblige them,” he said.

Under the former FCT Director of Sports, the Federation witnessed a tremendous development of grassroots football in the country, starting from the U-13 in 2007, from which the likes of Chidera Ezeh, Kelechi Iheanacho and a host of other members graduated into the 2013 World Cup U-17 winning Golden Eaglets after U-15.

It is worthy to note that during his period in office, Super Eagles soared high to an enviable 9th position in FIFA ranking as well as all the various national teams qualified for all the FIFA-organised competitions.

NFF TO KESHI: Submit only 40-man list

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) have demanded a 40-man list from coach Stephen Keshi preparatory to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

MTNFootball.com has learnt that the NFF technical committee asked Keshi to make available a list of players from which he will pick his final 23-man squad for the World Cup in June.

“We expect the coach to send through this list at the latest after the CHAN,” a member of the committee informed MTNFootball.com

It is expected that the core of this 40-man squad will come from the bulk of the players who featured at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations and also qualified the country to a fifth World Cup.

It is left to be seen if Keshi will recall skipper Joseph Yobo, who has seen limited action at Turkish club Fenerbache after he fell down the pecking order, and England-based striker Osaze Odemwingie.

Osaze has had a major fallout with Keshi after he was sensationally overlooked for the 2013 AFCON.

It would also be interesting to see some of the other players Keshi is now considering for the tournament.

Ukraine-based midfielder Lukman Haruna, Chinedu Obasi, Raheem Lawal and Joel Obi are believed to be among those to be given a chance to fight for a place on the flight to Brazil.

Nigeria’s World Cup training camp will open on May 25 most likely in Keshi’s preferred choice.

They take on Mexico on March 5 in a warm-up match in the United States of America.

  • Phillips berths with LAMPS Awards

    Phillips berths with LAMPS Awards

BARELY months after successfully holding the maiden edition of Nigeria Football Pitch Award, Shina Phillips, is the CEO of Matchmakers Consult on the march again with an all-encompassing award on the continental sphere.

“ The word lamp is the major reason behind the idea of the LAMPS award,” said Phillips matter-of-factly.“It is about those who have brought about positive change to the continent of Africa.

“They are vehicles that convey light and knowledge; it is about the name and what it means. It is about those who are innovative and are agents of change in the different categories as it is defined.

“LAMPS as being conceived stands for: Legends of Arts, Management, Politics, Science and Sports. This will promote healthy competition and inspire many to make the difference and we really want to make a bold statement with this,” noted Phillips.

Phillips is indeed a man of many parts full of ideas, he started Matchmakers Consult in 2007 and its first major event was the NFF/FIFA players’ agent workshop. He’s also a FIFA- licensed agent. In the 1990s he started out early in conjunction with the late chief Ajaiyi Adun to package the Contractor Magazine Awards to deserving individuals in the construction industry. He was about the first person to institute awards for the now thriving Nollywood industry and he has yet to look back. He has been involved in the 10-year-old Security Watch Africa Awards from inception it is being involved at some levels in Nollywood awards way back. His story is incomplete without mentioning attempts at Nollywood’s awards. He initiated an award for Veterans in the movie and stage industry.

“I’m not interested in given out awards to people because it is not an ego trip,” affirmed Phillips who caught his teeth in journalism before venturing to other things. “I like to reward excellence and celebrate hard work especially to create a platform for people who do extraordinary things to be rewarded and this is not only about footballers alone.

“I like to appreciate people who have used their knowledge and talents in other spheres of human endeavours to benefit the society. Some of my friends called me Mr. Crazy and one of the people who call me Mr. Crazy is Mr.Ibu of Nollywood because of the things I do.

“My motivation comes from God because he is the giver of these ideas and he has always provided the enabling environment and partner s to make them work, “he noted as he speaks on sundry issues. Excerpts…

How successful was the inaugural edition of the Nigeria Football Pitch Awards held last year?

As an organiser, it would be difficult for me to judge ourselves but what we set out to do was basically a well- managed event that would be a reference point and on the basis of that, I think we did our best. We were concerned about organising a credible football award for the first time in the history of Nigerian football. It was the first time we were able to bring all the stakeholders under one umbrella of the governing body of football in Nigeria which is the NFF. Essentially, we the organisers and the NFF were able to organise an event that was adjudged as very transparent beyond the glamour and politicking that often characterised other awards. To ensure transparency, we brought in BOD International which is the fifth auditing firm in the world and that say so much about the extent we went in order to organise the event which has been adjudged by everyone as the best in recent time. Be that as it may, I think it’s the media and the public who would be able to score us well but I’m delighted with the positive things being said about the Pitch Awards.

So what are the arrangements being put in place towards the next edition of the awards?

Right from the outset, we planned to do things differently and that was why we went all the way to sensitive the press and the public about the kind of things we wanted to do. We even had a pre award night called The night of Stars which was hugely successful and we’ll commended by the NFF because that was the first time you had something as big like that before the real award night because we brought the best of Nollywood and Nigerian football together, Basically what I’m saying is that, we are taking stock and we are not going to rest on our oars. We had a successful outing last time and we are not going to let go on integrity because when everybody knows there’s transparency, there would be great followers of the awards.

Generally, what impact do the Pitch Awards have on stakeholders and the Nigerian football industry?

The Pitch Awards was the first time we had the NFF endorsed such from the start b because they believe in our capacity to deliver a successful and transparent event. Apart from this, those who won the last time knew that they were adjudged the best in a transparent manner and would strive to do their best all the time. Everybody wants to b e appreciated and to whom much is given, much is expected and it would spur them to o greater heights.

Why is Shina Phillips always interested in handling out awards to people?

I considered this as a privilege and would same unashamedly; God has been good to me by giving me so many ideas to work on. It has always been my desire to appreciate people and it goes without saying that one must really have an appreciative heart in order to see the good in other people. I have embedded this in my business because I love to appreciate people and very soon, we are going to do something on a bigger scale with the LAMPS Awards.

What again are the LAMPS Awards and what is the idea behind this?

I’m a very restless person but I must thank God for always giving me these brilliant ideas and he has gifted me again with this idea called the LAMPS Award which is going to be a celebration of the best in Africa. I love Africa as a continent and I had been looking for this opportunity to celebrate the best on the continent not only in sport but in all endeavours. Africa has great potentialities but it seems that we have not had the great tonic to spur others to bring out their best for the continent and this is one of the areas that the LAMPS awards would be taken care of. For Africa to be bigger and greater, the people must begin to celebrate themselves because in other climes, heroes, heroines and legends are usually celebrated but this is not always the case in Africa. It is usually contentious and I had this thought about what can endeared unity, excellence and foster healthy competition amongst the Black race. I thought about what I could give that would resonates through the globe and God gave me this idea about LAMPS Awards. This is an award that is designed to showcase the brightest lights on the continent in key areas of arts, management, politics, life and sports. Of course, there are several award ceremonies on the continent but definitely, this is going to be a different because there is no single award on the continent that brings everybody under the same umbrella where they would be collectively honoured and celebrated. The LAMPS award would expectedly fill in this void and on an annual basis, bring the best of the continent together and honour them in a grand ceremony.

The inspiration for LAMPS awards is also due to the fact that the African continent has produced a legend of all times in person of the late South African President Mandela who was indeed a beacon of hope for human race. I think Africa can produce great people and as we recognise these people, they would be encouraged to bring out their best. Already, we are working with great institutes across the continent to mid-wife the award. African is indeed a continent that light truly shines upon and we can make the LAMPS awards something really great.

The process is already going because nominees are already being indentified by a high level committee that is already being put in place to ensure a very transparent and credible award.

Do you already have a venue in mind for the event?

There is a committee already in place for that and personally, I’m in interested in Johannesburg but I know there is the possibility of holding it in Abuja and of course, we have Ethiopia in mind which is the headquarter of the African Union. But I know the committee would still put this into vote and pick the best venue because we are looking forward to it holding sometime in December 2014 or thereabout.

    • Tip Mikel for future

Despite Super Eagles and Chelsea midfield maestro, John Mikel Obi not being named the African Footballer of the Year at Thursday’s awards ceremony in Lagos, it was plaudits galore for the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President, Aminu Maigari, his executive committee and all Nigerians over the near clean sweep of awards at the Eagles’ camp in Cape Town on Thursday night.

From Assistant Coach, Dan ‘the bull’ Amokachi, Team Administrator, Dayo Enebi Achor to other officials and indeed the players it was clapping and praises galore as award after award was named after Nigeria. Even the Protocol Official attached to the team, Lawrence Kentu and other security personnel in the team were not left out of the praise for the NFF and its leadership.

“It’s simply the best era in Nigerian football and we pray and hope that it will be sustained in the coming years”, declared an obviously elated Emmanuel Attah, who is the team’s Coordinator. Gangling defence ace, Azubuike Egwuekwe, said he was not too disappointed at Mikel’s loss because head or tail, Nigeria was the champion of the night. “We are sure that Mikel or a Nigerian will win the next award”, he said excitedly.

Team Psychologist, Dr Robinson Okosun spoke in a similar vein, declaring that with the clean sweep of awards, the year 2014 will be a better one for Nigeria. “Yes, we may be a little disappointed that Mikel did not win but are assured that we will do better in the New Year, starting with the CHAN tournament and we will return again next year to take what rightly belongs to us.”

Amokachi, who is normally not used to emotions said there was a lot to cheer from the award ceremony. “We had a clean sweep and we must commend President Maigari and his board but the message is for us to work harder and remain the dominant force in African football”, he said. Team’s Media Officer Ben Alaiya, simply said he could not agree more with the deluge of accolades that were poured on Nigerian football and the Maigari-led NFF. “Its congratulations and more work to be done”.
