Saraki, Atiku, Wike congratulate Egbemode, NGE

Senate President Abubakar Bukola Saraki, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Rivers State Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike yesterday congratulated Mrs. Funke Egbemode, on her re-election as the president of the Nigeria Guild of Editors (NGE) at the guild’s biennial convention in Lagos.

Saraki, in a statement by his Special Adviser, Media and Publicity, Yusuph Olaniyonu, in Abuja, noted that the choice of Egbemode, who is managing director and editor-in-chief, New Telegraph , is a clear testimony that she has successfully justified the confidence reposed in her by her colleagues.

He said: “I can only admonish her to work harder to extend the frontiers of her achievements as the President of the NGE. Her return unopposed is a fitting tribute to the fact that her contributions have been recognised. As they say: “the reward for work well done is the opportunity to do more”.

Atiku felicitates with members and leadership of the NGE on a peaceful and successful election at its biennial convention in Lagos at the weekend.

The APC chieftain, in a statement by his media office in Abuja, said the guild displayed exceptional leadership and good conduct in the way it was able to organise within a short time, a rancour-free and credible election, which saw the emergence of a new crop of leaders to pilot its affairs.

Atiku said the outcome of the election, which has brought a new national executive team in place under Mrs. Egbemode as president, Suleiman Uba Gaya as deputy president and other well-known editors was a testimony to the enduring legacy of the guild.

The Turakin Adamawa wished the new leadership the best as it goes ahead to run the affairs of the association while serving as a watchdog of sorts on the practice of the Journalism profession.

He hoped that the new management would partner the present administration in the dissemination of government programmes as well as other critical groups in the society.

Wike congratulated Mrs. Egbemode, a director at The Tide, Juliet Njiowhor and others who emerged victorious during the 2017 edition of the NGE Biennial Convention.

He urged the NGE president and the new executives to work towards promoting media professionalism, objectivity and development of the country.

He wished the NGE President a fruitful term in office.

NGE unveils book on human trafficking

As part of the campaign against trafficking in persons, Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) and Human Dignity Project (HDP) will unveil a book, 8 Evils of Human Trafficking, today in Abuja.
The formal presentation will hold at Sheraton, Abuja. It is written by two editors and members of NGE – The Nation Editorial Board member, Mr Steve Osuji and Boniface Opute.
NGE Secretary General Mrs Victoria Ibanga said the book was part of its plan to rekindle interest in the ills of human trafficking.
“The campaign against this crime seems to have waned in the last few years and not only in Nigeria but globally. NGE, working with HDP, will pay more attention to this vice,” she said.
She spoke while meeting with reporters at the NGE House in Lagos. Mrs Ibanga added that 21 states will attend, adding that the release is the first intervention by the guild and its partner to bring trafficking in persons to the front burner.
“We have decided not to leave this fight to government or even NAPTIP alone. As part of our awareness drive, we have invited about 21 state governments where the menace is prevalent to the launch so that they can join in the advocacy, especially by buying copies,
“As the title suggest, the book considers major aspects of this malaise and their debilitating effects on the individual, family and our society. In a most enchanting manner, the book looks at prostitution, child labour, baby factory syndrome, poverty, disease and deaths.”

The change Nigerians want, by Osinbajo, Dickson, editors

Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) commenced its 11th Annual Conference in Yenagoa, Bayelsa, on Thursday with a verdict that Nigerians expect to see improvements in all aspects of their lives from the new government of President Muhammadu Buhari.

The Governor of the state, Mr. Seriake Dickson, who hosted and declared the event open and Vice-President Yemi Osibanjo, who was the special guest of honour , unanimously called for attitudinal change from leaders and the led.

In his welcome address, the acting President, NGE, Garba Muhammad, named the qualitative improvements Nigerians want to see from the new government as better wages for workers, jobs for the unemployed and better and affordable healthcare services.

He added that individual citizens also expect to see functional education for every child and freedom to lives without restrictions except those imposed by laws and personal judgments.

He said: “As a people we want a nation that is deserving of that name in every sense of the word. We want a country that we would be proud to identify with wherever we go. We want to have a country where basic ingredients of development such as stable power supply, reliable and safe transportation system and independent judiciary are seen as our inalienable rights.

“But more than anything else, we want a country that is free from threats whether internal or external. We want to see convicing performance from our armed forces and corresponding security agencies that they are up to the task of protecting the country all times.

“The insurgency in the northeastern Nigeria is no doubt one of the biggest sources of concern for every Nigerian especially those who are directly affected by its brutal consequences.

In his remarks, Dickson advocated for a change that would lead to total diversification of the country’s economy away from oil and gas.

He said the story of the dry oil well in Oloibiri, where oil was first discovered in commercial quantity in Ogbia local government area of the state, is a sad reminder that oil and gas are wasting assets.

He also called for political tolerance, saying that politicians need to know the difference between politics and development.

He said after the election, politicians no matter their political leanings should rally round President Buhari to move the country forward.

Osibanjo, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Information, Dr. Folashade Yemi, said Nigerian media must be carried along in the efforts of the new government to move Nigeria forward.

He said: “Change occurs when we decide to take control of what we have full right over, instead of yelling control over what we don’t. There is no gainsaying that carrying the media along in our determination to move Nigeia forward is not only expected but a must do.

“The media create the most viable platform in promoting development and the media must do this through their watchdog role as well as influencing people to be agents of change, particularly in the area of attitudinal change.”

    NGE chief Adesina hails Amosun

President of the Nigeria Guild of Editors (NGE) Femi Adesina has praised Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun for his “landmark achievements” in the last three and half years.

He said his era was “truly the golden years” of Ogun State.

“The achievements are seen in the areas of road construction, urban renewal and infrastructural development, modernisation of schools, improved security, clean and safe environment and enhanced healthcare delivery.”

Adesina said the governor also set a standard in the way things are done, describing it as a “great standard to emulate” as well as something worth “recommending to the rest of the country”.

The NGE President spoke in Abeokuta, the state capital, at the launch of a book: Ogun State, the Golden Years, written by Opeyemi Soyombo, Amosun’s Special Assistant on Media.

Adesina added that the “Ogun Standard” which Amosun introduced, is all about quality and integrity.

He urged politicians to copy it and cultivate a “Nigerian standard”.

The renowned journalist and columnist said the book was a good vehicle for promoting the activities and policies of the  government.

Adesina, however, faulted the author for excoriating Amosun’s predecessor in a bid to show that the present was better than the past.

He said a good wine needed no bush as it related to Amosun’s administration and stressed that the previous government should be left out of the narrative.

He said:”The governor has made a difference in the physical outlook of the state, which is quite commendable.”

  • Minister sympathises with journalists

The Minister of Power, Prof. Chinedu Nebo, has sympathised with journalists on the death of the Vice-Chairman of The SunPublishing Ltd, Mr. Dimgba Igwe.

Nebo, who expressed shock and sadness about the incident in a condolence message, said the sudden death of such a lively, vibrant and purposeful man might seem inexplicable, “but I believe the deceased fulfilled God’s purpose for his life.”

The Special Assistant on Media to the minister,  Kande Daniel, said in a statement yesterday.

Nebo attributed Igwe’s death to the carelessness of a hit-and-run driver while he was jogging to keep fit.

Reflecting on the life of the prominent journalist and prolific writer, the message said: “Dimgba Igwe was a gentleman to the core. He did not bury the talent God gave him, but used it well to benefit the human race.

“He was a fearless advocate and a dogged fighter for the good of the society, using his pen, having discovered his talent early enough.

“Like many a Nigerian journalist, Igwe never baulked or shirked the responsibility of telling the truth always, exposing the malfeasance in the society, no matter the cost, as demanded by journalism. What is more, he realised also that God’s expectation of man does not stop at caring for the body alone, but includes the more important injunction of nurturing the spirit. So, he devoted himself to this as well, as a pastor.”

The minister urged journalists to be guided and encouraged by the life of the deceased and thanked God for allowing him to pass through “this side of the globe.”

He added: “The only debt we owe him is to ensure that the fire he ignited in our hearts by his advocacy on the pages of newspapers and on the pulpit is not extinguished with his exit.

“On behalf of my family and the management and workers of the Federal Ministry of Power, I express deep condolences to the Igwe family, the management and workers of The Sun, Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) on the loss.”

    NGE mourns

The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) has mourned the death of Mr. Dimgba Igwe.

It said: “A gentleman, Igwe was said to be jogging near his Okota, Lagos home about 10am  when the sad incident occurred. He later died at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja.

“It is painful to recall that only recently, between August 27 and 31, the deceased was in Katsina, where he participated at the 10th All Nigerian Editors Conference (ANEC). His death, therefore, has dealt a great blow to journalism, to which he and his inseparable colleague, Mr. Mike Awoyinfa, made invaluable contributions.     “Igwe was deputy to

Awoyinfa when the Weekend Concord hit the newsstand in 1989. The partnership was replicated when the Sun came on board in 2003 and in the books they co-wrote.”

  • Editors hail media coverage of outbreak

Editors hail media coverage of outbreak

The Standing Committee of the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) has hailed the media for its responsible reportage of the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreak in the country.

At its meeting in Lagos at the weekend, the committee urged the media to continue to tread the professional path and ensure that its reports do not cause panic in the polity.

In a communiqué, the NGE urged state governments to set up isolation centres and units as proactive measures to enable them remain on top of the deadly virus.

For a fastidious and exotic pathogen like Ebola, the guild warned that reactive steps would only result in risky “fire brigade approach”.

The committee also urged government at various levels to sustain their awareness campaigns on how to prevent the spread of the EVD.

The guild urged doctors to call off their strike and return to work “because the nation needs them now more than ever”.

The Standing Committee advised the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) and other relevant security agencies to be more alert to their responsibilities and ensure better policing of the nation’s land, sea and air borders to check the Ebola virus.

It also urged the government to take the screening of passengers coming into the country more seriously so that infected or already ill patients of the EVD are not allowed free rein in Nigeria.

On security, the NGE urged the Federal Government to step up the war against terror and review its tactics.

The body also expressed worry about the insurgents’ use of under-age girls as suicide bombers.

After about 120 days since the abduction of the pupils of Government Girls’ Secondary School in Chibok, Borno State, the guild said the new trend in terror calls for concern.

It said the nation’s apprehension “is further worsened by the increasing spate of attacks and brazen hoisting of Boko Haram flags in parts of Borno State”.

In a statement by its President Femi Adesina, the guild expressed worry over the fate of the abducted Chibok girls.

The NGE hailed the Federal Government for attempting to rescue the girls but noted that “not retrieving the girls from the hands of their captors is not an option”.

“Lastly, the SCM called on the Federal Government to settle all outstanding issues with the Academic Staff of Universities Union, Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union, and others, to ensure that the nation’s tertiary institutions do not witness another season of embarrassing strikes,” NGE added.

Editors to Jonathan: rescue Chibok girls

The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) has tabled a demand before the Federal Government: rescue the abducted schoolgirls.

The guild said the abduction of over 200 schoolgirls from the Government Girls’ Secondary School in Chibok, Borno State, was not an assault on only the town but on all parts of Nigeria.

In a communiqué issued at the end of its Standing Committee meeting in Owerri, Imo State, on May 16, the editors expressed sadness over Boko Haram insurgency.

It urged the Federal Government to rescue the abducted pupils.

The guild also expressed worry over the non-passage of the 2014 budget, five months into the year. It urged the Executive and Legislature to resolve their differences and pass the budget urgently.

The NGE condemned the acrimony in the ongoing National Conference.

It advised the delegates to watch their utterances because some of them were capable of causing more disunity in the country.

The guild hailed Nigeria’s new status as the largest economy in Africa, adding that this should reflect in the per capita income and living standards of Nigerians.

On Ekiti and Osun states governorship elections, the NGE urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure free, fair and credible polls that would be a template for next year’s elections.

It urged the Federal Government to ensure adequate funding of sports to ensure Nigeria’s success at the FIFA World Cup and the Commonwealth Games, adding that sports is a unifying factor in Nigeria.
