BREAKING: Court grants ex-Labour Minister Ngige bail over alleged N2.2b fraud

A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Gwarimpa has granted bail to former Minister of Labour, Chris Ngige.

Ngige is being prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on an eight-count charge bordering on abuse of office and acceptance of gifts estimated at about N2.2billion.

He is alleged to have accepted the said gifts from contractors of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) during his tenure as supervising minister from September 2015 to May 2023.

In a ruling on Thursday, Justice Mariam Hassan held that Ngige should be granted bail on the same conditions attached to the administrative bail earlier granted him by the EFCC.

Justice Hassan said Ngige should produce a surety, who must be at the level of a director and must own landed property within the court’s jurisdiction.

The judge held that since Ngige claimed he had misplaced his international passport, his surety should deposit his own international passport with the court, which the surety could only retrieve when Ngige produces his own as a replacement.

She adjourned till January 28 and 29 next year for trial.

Alleged N2.2b fraud: Court to rule on Ngige’s bail application Thursday

A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Gwarimpa, Abuja, has ordered that a former Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, be remanded in Kuje Prison until December 18, when his bail application will be determined.

The court had, on December 12, after he was arraigned on an eight-count charge, ordered that Ngige be kept in Kuje Prison pending the hearing of his bail application yesterday.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is prosecuting Ngige on charges bordering on abuse of office and acceptance of gifts from contractors of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) during his tenure as supervising minister from September 2015 to May 2023.

Justice Mariam Hassan yesterday ordered that Ngige should be returned to prison after she heard arguments from lawyers to the parties on whether or not Ngige deserved to be granted bail.

Ngige’s lawyer, Patrick Ikwueto (SAN), prayed the court to, among others, grant bail to his client on health grounds.

He submitted that the former minister would not jump bail or interfere with the prosecution’s witnesses if granted bail.

Responding, the prosecuting lawyer, Sylvanus Tahir (SAN), objected, claiming that Ngige is a flight risk.

Tahir said the EFCC had earlier granted Ngige administrative bail and allowed to travel abroad for medical care, but he failed to report back to the EFCC.

The lawyer said the international passport released to him to facilitate his trip abroad trip was never returned.

He argued that it was when Ngige was rearrested that he came up with the alleged loss of his passport, which the prosecuting lawyer called an afterthought.

He prayed the court to reject Ngige’s application for bail.

Justice Hassan adjourned till Thursday for ruling.

Ngige is named the sole defendant in the charge.

In one of the counts, Ngige is alleged to have, between September 2015 to May 2023, while being the supervising Minister of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF), used his position to confer an unfair advantage upon Cezimo Nigeria Limited, a company whose MD/CEO and alter ego, Ezebinwa Amarachukwu Charles, is his associate.

Ngige is said to have awarded seven different contracts for consultancy, training, and supply by the NSITF to the said company to the tune of N366,470,920.68.

Alleged fraud: Court remands ex-Labour Minister Ngige in prison

A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) sitting in Gwarimpa has ordered that former Minister of Labour, Chris Ngige be remanded in Kuje prison untill Monday when his bail application would be heard.

Justice Mariam Hassan issued the order in a ruling on Friday after Ngige was arraigned on an eight-count charge bordering on abuse of office and acceptance of gifts from contractors of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) during his tenure as supervising minister from September 2015 to May 2023.

Ngige pleaded not guilty to the charge, shortly after which prosecuting lawyer, Sylvanus Tahir (SAN) sought a date for the commencement of trial.

Justice Hassan turned down attempt by Ngige’s lawyer, Patrick Ikwueto (SAN) to apply orally for his client’s bail.

Ikwueto had told the court about a formal bail application that he filed for his client which had been served on the prosecution.

He however, could not move the application because Tahir argued that he was just served and needed time to respond.

Justice Hassan agreed with Tahir that the bail application was not ripe for hearing and that the prosecution should be accorded time to respond.

She adjourned till Monday for hearing of the bail application and ordered that Ngige be held in Kuje prison till then.

    • Says interview distorted to misrepresent remarks on Obi
    • Insists he cleared salary, gratuity, pension arrears
    • Says Obi met ₦13.8bn in state coffers, hails Soludo’s stewardship

Former Anambra State governor, Senator Chris Nwabueze Ngige, has denied reports circulating on social media and some mainstream outlets that he criticised the incumbent governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, over perceived comments about Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi.

In a statement issued on Friday and signed by Hygg Obialor, Special Assistant, Ngige Media Office, the ex–Minister of Labour and Employment said the claim was a misreading of an interview he granted Signature TV as part of his 8 August 2025 birthday activities.

He said that the contentious segment was “badly edited.”

“Our attention has been drawn to a news item… purporting that our principal, HE Chris Nwabueze Ngige… had critiqued HE Mr Governor of Anambra State, Prof Chukwuma Soludo, alleging that he is not like him who is always criticising the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in 2023, Mr Peter Obi,” the statement said. “Firstly, a critical look at the video will show that this area has been badly edited.”

Clarifying what Ngige actually said, the media office quoted him as stating: “I don’t want to be like Soludo whom our people wrongly perceive everything he says to be against Peter Obi.”

It added that Ngige immediately balanced that line with: “But constitutionally, he is entitled to his opinion and views on any matter.”

According to the statement, “this stanza was edited off,” and what viewers then saw was a separate portion where Ngige remarked that “Peter Obi did well as Governor.”

The statement said the attention of Signature TV had been drawn to the anomaly. “They have apologised and have started making amends,” the media office noted.

Addressing narratives about the state of Anambra when he assumed office, Ngige argued that portrayals of a “failed state, with unpaid salaries, gratuities and pensions, no security, [and] unbridled corruption,” were not accurate for his tenure.

He maintained that arrears inherited from the administration of Dr. Chinwoke Mbadinuju were cleared and that, going forward, salaries and gratuities were diligently paid.

He further said his government implemented a 142% rise in pensions and placed pensions on first-line charge.

The only gray area, according to the statement, was a “tiny component” of arrears for pensioners of the old Anambra State (covering present-day Enugu, Anambra and Ebonyi), whose claims were still being processed when he left office.

“But all pensioners of Anambra State origin who served in the Old Anambra and present Anambra State got their new Ngige 142% pensions monthly,” the statement stressed.

Ngige linked these fiscal and administrative measures to Anambra’s performance in education, stating that the state emerged as “best Education State” in evaluation exercises for 2004, 2005 and 2006.

The trophies, the statement explained, were handed out subsequently in 2007–2008 and received by the chairman of the state’s education board.

On transition finances, the statement said Mr Obi “inherited ₦13.8 billion in the various bank accounts of the Anambra State Government,” including ₦8.7 billion in an Infrastructure Account and ₦2.8 billion in the Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB) account with Zenith Bank for rehabilitation and construction of primary and junior secondary school buildings and the provision of education materials.

Ngige, it added, asked that Obi be “magnanimous enough to acknowledge he laid the foundations and worked for those awards since government is a continuum. Nothing more!!”

The former governor also moved to dispel the impression that he bears any animus toward either Obi or Soludo.

While reiterating that he had “nothing against Gov. Peter Obi,” he reserved special praise for Soludo, describing him as “one of the best from our state,” who served meritoriously at the national level “first as Chief Economic Adviser to the President and later as Central Bank Governor (2004–2005), all without blemish.”

The statement noted that as an elder statesman and former governor, Ngige had publicly eulogised Soludo at the second- and third-anniversary celebrations of his administration for “managing the resources [money and human] of the state with a lot of dexterity, excellence, and care.” It concluded emphatically: “He has done very well. Again, Odenigbo carry go!!”

In his tribute, former Minister of Labour and Employment in the Buhari administration, Dr. Chris Nwabueze Ngige said: I have been shell shocked and very sad since the last hour that I received the news of the death of our former Boss and my friend   President Muhammadu Buhari GCFR.

“Shocked and sad ,not because we should all not die, so to go the way of all mortals as designed by God Almighty our maker but because the last information on him was that of a patient, on his way to full recovery from an ailment that initially sent him into the Intensive Care Unit.

Christmas: Ngige calls for prayers to overcome challenges

Former Governor of Anambra and two-time Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, has extended his greetings to Nigerians on the occasion of the Christmas celebration.

Ngige urged Christians, in particular, to use the period of the commemoration of the birth of Jesus Christ to pray fervently for the nation to overcome all its present challenges, no matter how difficult they may seem.

According to him, the holiness and solemnity of the period also offer an opportunity for quiet reflection by Nigerians on their individual lives and on the life of the nation.

He made these remarks on Tuesday in a Christmas message released through his media office in Abuja.

The former minister appealed to Nigerians to pray for God’s guidance for their leaders at all levels and branches of government to ensure their success.

Ngige described Christ as good news worth celebrating globally, year after year, regardless of the challenges faced by humanity almost everywhere in the world, including bloody conflicts, wars, and catastrophic natural and man-made disasters.

According to him, even though Jesus Christ was born under humble circumstances, He remained a phenomenal figure in the history of Christendom and humanity in general, bringing love to the unloved, care to the uncared-for, and hope to the hopeless.

The former minister urged Christians to emulate Christ and use the period of His birth to show care, compassion, and love to others, especially the less privileged in society.

He also enjoined the Christian faithful to utilise this period to pray for the peace, progress, and prosperity of Nigeria, and for our dear nation to overcome all its challenges.

The former governor called on all Nigerians to imbibe peace and to learn to live in harmony with one another, irrespective of creed and tribe.

Ngige said: “On this occasion of Christmas, I extend my warmest thoughts and best wishes to Christians and indeed, all Nigerians.

“May our homes be filled with love and warmth during this period. May Christmas brighten our faces, irrespective of whatever challenges confront us as individuals and as a nation.

“May we feel joyful, and may all our dreams come to fruition this Christmas.

    • •Ex-minister urges Supreme Court to revisit verdict on local govt financial autonomy

Former Labour and Employment Minister in the Muhammadu Buhari administration, Senator Chris Ngige, has said some local government chairmen are more corrupt than governors.

He said some local government chairmen crave the acquisition of choice estates in Abuja, Lagos, and even abroad, at the detriment of building public health centres and schools in their areas, where teachers are owed several months of salary arrears and allowances.

The former minister decried the abandonment of more than 15,000 primary healthcare centres built across the country as constituency projects, urging the State Economic Planning Boards to ensure that the abandoned healthcare centres were revamped as quickly as possible.

He maintained that the local government system remained pivotal to basic healthcare system, which former Minister of Health, Prof. Olikoye Ransome-Kuti, transformed into primary healthcare system.

Ngige also urged the Supreme Court to revisit its judgment on local government financial autonomy.

The ex-minister said the verdict violated the 1999 Constitution, as amended.

He argued that the judgment attempted to completely knock down Section 7 of the Constitution, which firmly puts the local government areas under the control of states.

Ngige spoke at the weekend in Enugu on the topic: Local Government Administration and Primary Healthcare, during the 29th annual general meeting (AGM) and scientific conference of the Association of Urological Surgeons, Nigeria (NAUS).

The former minister recalled that the same Supreme Court, in 2006, made a pronouncement in which it warned the Federal Government against dictating to the states how to spend local government funds accruable to them.

He recalled that the previous Supreme Court ruling when Justice Mohammed Uwais was the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) was pronounced in a case filed by three state governments – Lagos, Abia, and Delta – through their attorneys general, challenging then President Olusegun Obasanjo’s Local Government Account Monitoring Committee Act 2005.

Ngige said he did not support the direct payment of federal allocation to the local governments without statutory first-line deductions for the payment of salaries and wages of council workers, pensions and gratuities, traditional rulers’ entitlements and customary courts’ allowances.

According to him, the judgment of the Supreme Court not only runs ultra vires of the Constitution but amounts to throwing away the baby with the dirty bath water.

The former minister blamed the failure of the local government system in Nigeria on the docility of the Houses of Assembly and the flagrant inability of the governors to adhere strictly to all the provisions of the Constitution on local government, especially the failure to establish democratically elected councils and economic planning board, as stipulated in Section 7 (1) and (3) of the Constitution.

He also attributed the failure of the local government system to the unwholesome activities of governors with itchy fingers, seizing and diverting council funds to other uses, other than public interests.

Ngige insisted that the local government system would start working when governors obey the law and the Houses of Assembly become alive to their responsibilities, including calling erring governors to order.

Citing his experience when he was Anambra State governor, he recalled that council chairmen between 1999 and 2002 owed several months of salaries and allowances, and pensions and gratuities, not only in the state but almost across the federation.
