    NGO seeks support in fight against exploitation, harmful occupations

    A Non-Governmental Organisation, Connecting Heart Initiative, through it’s Blooming Dames Centre, has appealed for the government and private individuals for women in exploitation and harmful occupationisn.

    Co-founders of the NGO, Mrs. Oluwatoyin Ogedengbe and Mrs. Abimbola Okutinyang, said the support will also provide transformative and structured environment that support the women in overcoming exploitative circumstances.

    The duo stated that this will also transition them into safe and dignified carer path through faith based discipleship, trauma informed care, and access to entrepreneurial resources and tools for sustainable livelihood.

    Speaking in Ibadan at the grand opening of Blooming Dames Center, the Executive Director, Connecting Heart of Women for Positive Change Initiative, Okutinyang aid  centre is to uplift many ladies and offer women medical interference, skill acquisition, spiritual intervention, and social intervention among others.

    She said:”Our desire and our goal, if we can have a safe house in every local government in Oyo State, that would be amazing. And the same thing in Lagos, the same thing in Abuja, the same thing everywhere. If we can just have one safe house in one local government, that would be one mind transformed.

    “Please come support us, come help us, come donate to us. If you have a bus, we need a bus, come support us, but consistently. We don’t want just one-off support and then you run away. Hold our hands, help us. Come give the girls counselling.”

    Ogedengbe, said the project was a collaboration between Connecting Hearts of Women Initiative and Pan-African Purpose Driven Women Initiative. 

    She said:”We realised that there’s a need for us to rise up to the occasion to be able to do our bit to help these women, some of them are victims of trafficking, some of them you know are there because of poverty, for different reasons, some are there because of selfish gains and all of that, but we’re here today to see what we can do to help them shift into dignifying sustainable livelihoods.

    “We can’t do it alone, one of the things we’re asking for is support because we’re private organizations, NGOs, you know we do not have grants yet, we only have partners from families and friends who are helping us raise resources to be able to maintain the facility.

    “When the ladies are here for the period that they will be here, six months or nine months maximum, feeding will be free, the facility needs to be furnished for them to be able to focus, there will be skills acquisition for them in their area of choices and that will also be free. 

    “For all the period that they will be here, feeding, you know toiletries, to get the place furnished, furniture, cooking utensils and all of that, we need this place to be furnished, to be up and running.

    “And of course for people to understand that there’s a place where they can come to, people who are vulnerable, people who have been abused, where they can come to for safety, for covering, for shelter.”

    NGO calls for sustainable e-waste recycling

    A non-governmental organisation, E-waste Relief Foundation (ERF), has called for more responsible e-waste management practice in Lagos. 

    The foundation is advocating for a sustainable environment in the collection, sorting and recycling of e-waste in the country, particularly in Lagos State.

    The foundation made the call yesterday at a press briefing on the 2025 Edition of the Lagos E-Waste Handlers Capacity Enhancement Programme (LEHCEP) billed for Thursday, April 17, 2025, at The Bunker, Lagos.

    According to the foundation founder/President, Dr Ifeanyi Ochonogor, proper management of e-waste has capacity of creating job opportunities for individuals and organisations in the state.

    “The benefits of proper e-waste management cannot be overstated.

    A sustainable and environmentally responsible e-waste management will not only reduce environmental pollution, it will create jobs and economic opportunities, enhance public health and safety.

    The significant environmental challenge electronic waste poses in our rapidly growing urban centers. Improper disposal of electronic devices not only harms our environment but also poses serious health risks to our communities. The loss of valuable resources is another consequence of not managing e-waste effectively.

    “The Lagos E-waste Handlers and Capacity Enhancement programme aims to address this challenge head-on. By providing training and capacity-building for e-waste handlers, we can promote environmentally responsible e-waste management practices. This program will enhance the skills of individuals and organizations involved in e-waste handling, ensuring they can manage e-waste safely and efficiently,” he said.

    NGO warns against neglect of boy child to prevent societal consequences

    The Elizabethan H&H Foundation, a non-governmental organization, has raised alarm over the growing neglect of the boy child, warning that the failure of parents and guardians to properly guide young boys today could lead to serious societal consequences in the future.

    Speaking during a programme to mark this year’s World Health Day—which also coincided with her 55th birthday—the founder, Mrs. Oyinade Samuel-Eluwole, emphasized the importance of prioritizing the mental well-being of boys. 

    The event was themed “Healthy Beginnings, Hopeful Futures: The Boy Child’s Mental Well-being – Breaking the Silence.”

    Mrs. Samuel-Eluwole lamented that boys and men often suffer in silence under the weight of neglect, societal pressure, and emotional suppression. 

    She stressed that one of the Foundation’s key objectives is to give a voice to the voiceless, particularly young boys who are discouraged from expressing vulnerability.

    Quoting statistics from the World Health Organization and UNESCO, she noted that boys are four times more likely to die by suicide than girls, and African boys face a higher risk of dropping out of school due to economic pressure.

    She called on parents and guardians to ensure boys are not emotionally stifled in the name of strength, urging them to raise emotionally healthy boys while continuing to empower the girl child.

    She stated that future of male child isn’t a conversation for tomorrow but a call for action today.

    She said, “The Mission of Elizabethan H&H Foundation this Foundation is not just an initiative, it’s a movement.

    A movement for mental health, emotional well-being, and identity restoration, especially for the male gender.

    “We chose today to launch this program because we believe: Health is not just physical-it is mental and emotional. Healing is not complete until all genders are heard And hope must be intentional and inclusive.

    “I want to live and die for this cause, even when Im gone, let this movement never die. Let the world remember that someone believed in healing the hidden pains of our boys. Join the Movement, add your voice, share your substance, follow our work, spread the word because when we speak, hearts heal, when we act, futures change.

    Speaking during a pannel session moderated by a Senior Social Welfare Officer at Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Yaba, Noah Israel, one of the speakers at the event, who is the Medical Director at Motayo Hospital Limited, Dr. Gloria Are said boy child need to be mentored and guided well, urging parents to always look out for signs that can make them behave abnormal so as to know how to tackle them.

    She said male child are extremely vulnerable and should not be neglect, adding that there is need to always encourage them and show them love.

    Also, a Psychiatrist, who is a Senior Registrar at Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Yaba, Lagos, Dr. Sonaike lamented there is seem to be a stigma surrounding boy child, adding that people need to start advocating for them.

    Prophet Ade Ologbonyo urged people to evaluate themselves and think about the value they bring to the family and society.

    “You are the first role model of your children, religious centers has contributed alot to the society, but we can not do it alone, you need to evaluate your live and value system.”

    Dignitaries at the event include the Director General, AERMP, Dr. Olayinka Odutola and husband of the founder, Mr. Eluwole Olugbenga Samuel.

    Others are member of the Governing Council of the NGO, Mrs Folake Sanu, and Mr. Joko Okupe among others.

    NGO donates cash, foodstuff to 30 families

    A Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), Society for Zakkat Professionals has distributed assorted food items, cash to 30 less-privileged households in Zamfara.

    Presenting the items to the beneficiaries in Gusau, the Chairman of the organisation,  Malam Ibrahim Tudu, said the gesture was meant to assist less-privileged families in the holy month of Ramadan.

    Tudu added that the package comprised assorted food items like; rice, millet and cash assistance.

    “The items distributed today were procured through the donations from philanthropists and some well-to-do individuals.

    “Each beneficiary after receiving the package of food items will also received N2,000 for transportation,” he said.

    Tudu noted that the organisation consist of members of skilled professionals from different fields, volunteers on charity and humanitarian services.

    “This organisation focuses its attention in fight against poverty and social injustice.

    “We collect donations, grants, Zakkat and other assistance from individuals and organisations for distribution to the less-privileged,” he explained.

    Some of the beneficiaries, Malama A’isha Alhaji and Abubakar Muhammed appreciated the organisation for the kind gesture.

    He delved into the Islamic perspective on marriage, stressing the importance of faith and respect. He asserted that reciting the Holy Quran, particularly Surah Baqarah, could bring financial stability to a household. He also addressed the delicate balance of jealousy, stating that while some jealousy is natural excessive jealousy is forbidden in Islam.

    “Islam sees the husband-and-wife relationship as a top-secret, which must be handled maturely,” he stated. He further clarified that disclosing intimate details to third parties, except in cases involving a family doctor, is strictly prohibited.”

     On the subject of domestic violence, Justice Al-Ilory urged parents to cultivate open communication with their children. “Let us take our children as friends to the extent they will confide freely in us,” he advised. He also stressed the importance of thorough background checks before marriage, emphasizing the significance of religion and family values.

     Al-Ilory identified a critical factor as the erosion of trust, often exacerbated by social media. He cautioned against the blurring of lines between online personas and reality, stating, that many matrimonial homes have collapsed as a result of social media content and skits, which are not the same as real life.

     He reiterated that a home grounded in the fear of will be a peaceful home. He called for a renewed commitment to traditional values and open communication as essential tools for preserving the sanctity of marriage in an increasingly complex world.

    A non-governmental organisation (NGO), Hoffen Project, has organised Christmas party for 1,000 children in Ilaje community, Bariga, Lagos, in the spirit of spreading joy during the Yuletide.

    During the event held at Faith College, Bariga, the children played games and listened to music. There was also distribution of food items. Hoffen Project distributed clothes, toys and other items to the children.  Twelve indigent students from Faith World College received scholarships, an initiative supported by Gidi Gospel Community.

    NGO secures release of 38 inmates from prisons

    The Charles Heart Ex-inmates Reformation Foundation has secured release of 38 inmates from Nigerian Correctional Service Medium facility in Kirikiri, Lagos and Agodi, Ibadan on November 21 and 22.

    According to the Chairman of the Foundation, Charles Osaghae, the development was to promote justice and decongest crowded prisons.

    He said the foundation worked with various stakeholders in criminal justice system to facilitate release of the inmates through provision legal representation for inmates and payment of court fines for inmates who are financially constrained.

    He added that the foundation also provides other forms of support to ensure the inmates’ smooth reintegration into society.

    He said: “Our aim is to help inmates that are wrongly incarcerated in prison and don’t have support. We have secured release of 34 inmates at Kirikiri correctional facility in Lagos and five in Agodi, Ibadan. Their offences range from theft, wandering, and other cases.

    “We have a follow-up program for them. We create conducive environment for them and unify them with the family and support those willing to learn one thing or the other among them.”

    Charles said the initiative was borne out of his passion for giving back to the society, help for the community, the nation and to decongest the prison.

    NGO holds  championship for people with disabilities  Oct. 29

    The Ellen Olusola Caulcrick Foundation (EOCF) is set to launch its maiden sports competition for people with disabilities (PWDs) on October 29, 2024.

    The event which is themed ‘Unified Sports’ is billed to hold at the Igbobi College, Yaba, Lagos State and it’s expected  to bring smiles and laughter to children with special needs as this  is one of the foundation’s core values.

    Segun Caulcrick , one of the organisers of the  event, noted at a press conference in Lagos on Tuesday  that the sole purpose of the event is to promote understanding and  change public perception towards people with disabilities.

    He said:  “Unified Sports will have people with and without disabilities on the same team collaborating to compete. This should promote understanding, friendship, and a positive shift in public perception toward persons with disabilities.

     “The event will be a fun, friendly interaction among students and all participants will be celebrated. Team spirit, not individual win/accomplishment is emphasized.

    “Sports activities will include walking and running races, basketball, hoops game, football, egg race, filling the bucket, tug of war, and dancing competition will be the crowning activity for parents, teachers and students.”

    Meanwhile, Dr. Dada Shonibare urged parents and guardians to be more supportive and attentive to the children, noting that their care and support is essential to the development of the children.

    He further emphasized that parents should come alongside their children on the event day to support their wards and give them the love they deserve.

    The Ellen Olusola Caulcrick Foundation established in 2013, has been in the business of empowering and enhancing the quality of life for individuals with disabilities by promoting independence and self-sufficiency through education, training, and advocacy.

    The foundation is calling on like-minded organizations and other institutions to partner and support the initiative to improve the quality of life of people with disabilities.

    IDG 2024: Advocacy NGO hosts Africa’s girl dialogue on media opportunities

    Good Governance Africa, a research and advocacy non-profit organisation focused on improving governance across Africa, on October 11, hosted a conference to commemorate the 2024 International Day of the Girl Child across its centres in the continent.

    The event, brought together in collaboration with Boston Media House and Mail&Guardian, had media experts and young girls from South Africa, Nigeria, Ghana, and Ethiopia in attendance as they discussed the challenges and opportunities facing girls and young women.

    The objective of the conference tagged “Exploring career opportunities in the media sector” was to raise awareness about the career opportunities in the media industry.

    It also featured a diverse range of speakers, including a keynote address by Precious Maputle, a 2023 M&G Power of Women award winner, who inspired the audience to dare to dream.

    Maputle, a talented marketing coordinator, radio and television presenter, and events coordinator, also shared her journey into the media sector and encouraged young women to pursue their aspirations.

    A panel of experts, including Dr Allegro Dinkwanyane from Orgella Group, CNBC’s Sally Sithole, and Dineo Sithole from Urban Brew Studio, provided an overview of the journalism, radio, and television industries. They shared their experiences in the field and offered valuable insights to aspiring professionals.

    GGA Nigeria had over 70 participants gathered at Lekki Centre for the conference and panel section on Gender-Based Violence. The panel discussion which focused in “Girl’s Vision for the Future” was done in collaboration with HeartMinders Initiative, a transformative NGO that has been at the forefront of fighting against GBV, rape and child sexual abuse in Nigeria.

    The panelists include Adeola Kingsley-James, Osayuwamen Saleh, and Zuriel Oloke. It was moderated by Tosin Adisa. Speaking during the panel discussion, Kingsley-James, a therapist said “courage is not the absence of fear but fulfilling dreams regardless of intimidation. Distractions are quick to come but everybody’s journey is unique and valid. As children, we’re faced with ups and downs. But the praise you give yourself is the purest of all praises. There has to be novelty with women.”

    On her part, Saleh, a media entrepreneur advised the participants to create an idea of what they want for themselves and not what the society wants for them. “One of the biggest things to help you is strong emotional stability. The things that control you are embedded in you. You must be intentional as a girl and not settle for less. You can not take your life with levity. Women are visioners and should dream big.”

    Olowe, a lawyer and emotional healing educator added that vision is an engine that helps to people drive their lives. “You can’t continue to stay in a place that is bad for you. We need you alive,” she told the young girls. Meanwhile, the panellists agreed that empowering girls and young women requires a collaborative effort from civil societies, and the private sector.

    Participants praised the conference for its informative and engaging contents. Many expressed appreciation for the opportunity to connect with experts and peers across Africa.

    Speaking with the press, Kalu Esther, one of the participants of the conference and a student of Reagan Memorial Baptist Girls Secondary School said the event was insightful. “I am very proud to be part of the programme. I learnt that I should not limit myself regardless of the situation and never stop trying new things.”

    Another student of Baptist Girls Academy who simply identified herself as Testimony said “I learnt that we should not let fears stand in our ways.”

    Mbah Chiamaka, a 200-level student of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) said: “I learnt there’s a lot of potential in me and should be open to making mistakes. The panel discussion really spoke to me and I understand that there’s a lot of potential in me.”

    In his closing remark, the Executive Director of GGA Nigeria, Dr. Oladiran Bello said it was an awesome event with young people and they participated actively. “I hope by doing this, we’ve supported them in someway in assuming that role of nation builders and achieve their dreams. We will be doing this kind of engagement as marathon and we will continue to engage the young girls as they navigate life and seek to achieve their aspirations.”

    NGO distributes sanitary pads others to pupils in Nasarawa to promote WASH

    A non-governmental organisation, the Salerno Uncles have donated sanitary pads, detergents, and toilet soaps to students of Akwanga North Secondary School, Nasarawa State.

    The organisation said the donation was part of its initiative to promote Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH).

    Chairman of the delegation, Ikechukwu Obinna expressed the appreciation of the organisation to all who contributed to the “resounding success of their recent retreat held from September 13th to 15th.”

    The NGO also extended a special appreciation to its father, Prince Emmanuel Obaigbona, for his “outstanding contributions throughout the entire event,” stating that his dedication and active participation have left a lasting impact.

    “To every Participant, your love and support have not gone unnoticed. Your efforts reflect the spirit of unity that drives Salerno forward, and we are proud to have each of you as part of this journey,” the organisation said through a statement.

    NGO targets 77,000 jobs for women

    A non-governmental organisation (NGO), AbleGod Women Development Forum (AWDF), is set to provide job opportunities for about 77,000 women across the nation, through farm training and  empowerment schemes nationwide.

    About 2,000 women are expected to be trained in each state of the federation,while 5,000 will take part in Lagos.

    This is in line with the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, urging women to take the lead in the food security campaign and job creation .

    Senator Tinubu, who recently unveiled her vegetable garden at the State House Residence, urged first-time women farmers to participate in the Every Home A Garden Competition.

    Addressing reporters in Lagos, the President, AWDF, Amb Okedeyi Olufunmilayo Gafaru, said the objective is to provide them with practical skills and knowledge in agriculture, job creation  and enabling them to participate in this vital sector and contribute its quota in the nation’s quest for poverty alleviation and promote better life for women and men.

    She said this would be addressed at the yearly AbleGod women conference and launch of agricultural training for women on September 28, this year at Onika Stadium, Lagos State.

    She said: “We are ready to give a positive impact in our country Nigeria by following the renewed hope agenda and bring hope for Nigerians through training

    “Training women in agriculture will significantly contribute to their economic empowerment by enabling them to generate income through farming activities and job creation. This will help alleviate poverty and improve livelihoods.

    “Women play a crucial role in food production and security. By enhancing their skills in agriculture, we will increase food production, ensure food security, and promote nutrition within communities and the country.

    “Providing equal access to agricultural training opportunities for women, to promote gender equality and empowers them to take on leadership roles in farming communities”.

    Gafaru stressed that the AbleGod team was complimenting the government’s efforts in educational development and inclusiveness in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).

    “Permit me to reiterate that the AWDF is committed to collaborations and networking with the government with unique and focused programs to stimulate economic growth, job creation, and, most importantly, poverty reduction.

    “Our doors are open to more collaborations of this nature hence the government alone cannot achieve nation-building, so all hands must be on deck to support the government of Bola Ahmed Tinubu to achieve his Eight-Point Agenda.

    “We also want to use the opportunity to invite the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu and other leaders to be part of the event. Your presence at the conference would not only inspire the attendees but also demonstrate your commitment to women empowerment and agricultural development in Nigeria,” she said.

    Also, the Lagos State AWDF Coordinator, Hon Princess Olumowo Folashade said AWDF was created with the aim of giving the marginalised women in-depth financial management training as well as empowering and equipping them with essential skills. She added that the training was all about transforming women who were in the trade and agricultural sectors.

    Senator Tinubu recently urged women to join the #Every Home A Garden Competition with a N25million prize.

    A statement by her Senior Special Assistant on Media, Busola Kukoyi, said the contest, open to women across Nigeria, aims to promote smart gardening and enhance communal living.
