The accused is standing trial on a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.

    Ikeja.

Emuerhi said the accused, who worked as a driver for the complainant, Mrs Ngozi Braide, allegedly stole gold jewellery and cash
    valued at N5.4 milion.

He alleged that the accused was given the keys to the complainant’s house to grant access to the people who were coming to clean

In her ruling, Magistrate Olufunke Sule-Amzat granted the accused bail of N250, 000 with two responsible sureties in like sum.

Sule-Amzat said one of the sureties should be a blood relation of the accused and must be gainfully employed with an evidence of two

  • Suspected highway robber held

    Suspected highway robber held

Eight days ago, as a free man, he led his gang on a mission. His dreaded five-man armed robbery gang attacked passengers in a Lagos-bound luxury bus belonging to GC Okoli Transport Company on its way from Sagamu in Ogun State.

Today, he is in the net of the Lagos State Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), which caught him while others fled.

The suspect, Mmaduabuchi Ibe (37), a sculptor, was paraded yesterday by the Lagos State Police Command’s spokesperson, Ngozi Braide, a Deputy Superintendent Police (DSP), who said he was arrested in one of the vehicles snatched by his gang at Sagamu.

Braide said the suspect was wearing a fake bullet proof vest when he was caught. She said the operatives were still on the trail of the fleeing suspects, noting that Ibe would be charged to court after investigations.

Ibe said poverty and frustration led him into robbery, explaining: “I met members of my gang, Monday, IK, Sunday and Miracle, at Oyingbo where we slept under the bridge in a nearby smoking joint. After narrating to them my problems and frustrations and how I left Ghana for Senegal to look for job, how things became worse and how I returned to Nigeria. They told me they had a job and asked me to drive them. It was Sunday and IK that wore the bullet-proof vest made of polythene.”

Ibe revealed that the gang attacked two commercial buses at Sagamu on the New Year Eve, but said they did not get anything from the first bus because the whole passengers ran into the bush. In the second bus, he said they “captured” seven passengers and dispossessed them of money and phone sets. However, he said not get a kobo because the loot was yet to be shared when he was arrested.

He urged Commissioner of Police Umar Manko to forgive him because they only operated with wooden guns that were mere toys. He said he would help the police to arrest his accomplices and other criminals in Oyingbo if released and allowed to join the police.

Officer-in-Charge of SARS, Abba Kyari, a Superintendent of Police (SP), said the suspect was correct that their bullet-proof vests and guns were made in Nigeria, but said it is incredible that they could intimidate passengers with polythene-made bullet-proof vests and toy guns.

  • Protest as water tanker kills pupil in Lagos

A water tanker yesterday crushed a pupil to death, sparking a protest in Ajah on the outskirts of Lagos.

The pupil and five of his mates were on their way to school when the tanker ran into them as they attempted to cross the road.

Three were injured and rushed to the hospital.

Angry residents barricaded the highway after the accident chanting war songs.

They demanded that pedestrian bridge be built for commuter safety.

It was gathered that a protesters was shot by a policeman.

Police spokesperson, Ngozi Braide, a Deputy Superintendent (DSP), said:

“Today, November 18, at about 0800hrs, Ajah Police Division received a distress call that there was a fatal motor accident. The Divisional Police Officer in company of the Divisional Traffic Officer raced to the scene.

“On getting there, they discovered that it was an accident involving one Blue Mercedes Benz Water Tanker(truck) with registration number. XZ87JJJ and a black Toyota Prado Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) with registration number CB690AKD. Preliminary enquiry showed that while the Prado SUV gave way to the pupils to cross the road, the water tanker ran into the kids, killing one of them, while two others were injured and are currently receiving treatment at the hospital. “Based on the foregoing, residents, youths and indigenes got infuriated and barricaded the Lekki/Ajah expressway. They attributed their grievance to incessant accidents and lack of pedestrian bridge, which they had been asking for. The situation was later brought under control as the Area Commander intervened and appealed to them not to take the law into their hands which they obliged to and left the road at about 1330hrs. Meanwhile the area is calm and quiet now”.

The Lagos State Government yesterday assured parents that its public schools are safe.

The assurance came on the heels of concerns by parents over the fate of some pupils who fainted after inhaling noxious substances three weeks ago.

The General Manager, Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), Mr. Babatunde Shabi, said though all the 22 affected pupils had been discharged from hospital, investigation is still ongoing to unravel the source of the gaseous substance.

He said though nothing incriminating had been established against the photographic laboratory involved the incident, it will remain shut until investigation is completed.

Shabi said he would be meeting with the photo laboratory operators to establish the types of chemicals used to process photographs and to see if the alleged photo laboratory is hiding anything from investigators.

Chukwu said the idea to relate with the police and the armed forces is a great idea. “We want to donate our books to the police library because I know there are also writers among the police, who in one way or the other can’t express themselves. He noted that such a relationship with the police would be like the flesh and blood.

He observed that some police are also good writers, but are not encouraged. “Relating with the police and the armed forces will go beyond exchanging books. It would be a mutual relationship where there would be agreement between us and them,” he said.

Chukwu commended the efforts of Lagos Chapter of ANA, saying: “ANA Lagos has been of great support to the interest of writers in Lagos, especially Femi Onileagbon and Folu Agoi who see to the establishment of the relationship.”

The Vice Chairman of ANA, Lagos chapter, Femi Onileagbon, urged writers among security personnel to express themselves assuring that the association would organise activities that would encourage and inspire them to achieve their dreams in writing.

According to Femi, “There are certain inner pains among the forces that cannot be explored or talked about in an ordinary paper, but rather in a book that would express their minds. Piracy has being a major challenge bothering most book writers, but relationship with the police and the military, would help us eradicate such challenges through our relationship with the forces. The police will protect the interest of writers by raiding pirated books sellers.”
