  • Its good bye to hanky-panky declares Balotelli

Mario Balotelli of the ‘Why Always Me’ fame has told whoever cares to listen that old things have passed away and that he has become a new improved and matured fellow that can be relied upon. He made the submission after he was left out of the Azzuris friendly with the Three Lions of England that ended 1-1 at the Wimbley on Tuesday.

Balotelli has admitted he was surprised he did not get a call-up to the Italy squad and assured whoever will be taking over the job permanently that he’s ‘matured’.

The Nice striker was overlooked for Italy’s recent friendlies against Argentina and England over the international break with caretaker boss Luigi Di Biagio preferring the options of Ciro Immobile, Andrea Belotti and Patrick Cutrone.

Balotelli was left feeling slightly disgruntled after being left out of the squad, having felt he had done enough to earn a recall following an impressive season that has seen him hit the target 22 times in 31 matches.

‘If I’m honest: I expected to be back in Azzurro (Italian national team),’ he told Gazzetta dello Sport.

‘I’ve matured, I’m 27 and I have two children. The time for [messing around with] girls has long gone.’Italy, France or England? I’m someone who lives on edge.’

The 27-year-old’s omission from the latest Italy squad caused quite a stir with his agent Mino Raiola said to be livid about the decision.

He has not represented his country since the 2014 World Cup despite also enjoying a goal-glut season last term.

The Nice forward insisted he has ‘matured’ and is ready to return after the latest snub

Di Biagio has been made favourite to take the Italy job on a permanent basis and insisted the door is still open for Balotelli.

He recently said: ‘Numbers and goals are important for forwards but they have to be linked to a certain type of performance.

‘I have looked, judged and decided. I will continue to follow him and we will see what he does in the next few months.’

The former Manchester City and Liverpool attacker has scored 13 goals in 33 caps for his country.

  • A nice terrorist

    A nice terrorist

Believe it or not, there are terrorists who are not terrible. Among such unbelievable terrorists is Abu Musab Al-Barnawi, who leads a faction of the Islamist terrorist group Boko Haram, according to someone who claims to know.

It is interesting that human rights activist Aisha Wakil paid tribute to Al-Barnawi when she spoke about the astonishing abduction of over 100 schoolgirls by Boko Haram from the Government Girls’ Science and Technical College (GGSTC), Dapchi, Yobe State, on February 19. Wakil, popularly known as Mama Boko Haram, is believed to have a rapport with the leadership of the group. She has been credited with helping the presidency to negotiate the release of persons kidnapped by Boko Haram in the past. She was a member of the Presidential Committee on Dialogue and Peaceful Resolution of Security Challenges in the North formed by former President Goodluck Jonathan.

After she made a public plea for the release of the Dapchi schoolgirls, Wakil said the Al-Barnawi-led group contacted her: “They are even the ones that called me and said Mama, we heard what you have said and told me that they are with the girls and they are going to release them. I begged of them and said please let this not be another 1,000-plus days of Chibok girls, and they laughed and said no. I asked them where I can come and stay with them (girls) for two days, but they did not say anything.”

She added: “I can assure Nigerians that so far they are with my son, Habib, and his friends; Habib is a nice guy, he is a very nice boy. He will not harm them, he will not touch them, and he will not kill them. He is going to listen to us, and so far, he indicated interest that he loves peace. And I love them for that and believe what they said on this. They will definitely give us the girls. All I am begging Nigerians is to calm down, be prayerful, everything will be over.”  Habib might be “a nice guy…a very nice boy.” But he is also a terrorist, which means that he is mean.

Clearly, the latest evil by Boko Haram terrorists shows that Islamist terrorism is alive and well despite contrary claims by the country’s military authorities. The Dapchi attack happened after Chief of Army Staff Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai restated his order to troops to capture Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau dead or alive.  It is noteworthy that in 2017 the army chief gave his men a 40-day ultimatum to capture Shekau, and the army recently offered a N3 million reward for information on the elusive Shekau.

Buratai was quoted as saying when he visited troops at Camp Zairo in the Sambisa Forest, which had served as headquarters of the terrorists before the military seized the camp in December 2016: “Let me say congratulations. But we must move across to wherever this criminal, Shekau, is and catch him…I want you to get him…You all know these criminals are still on the run; these guys are on the run, you must make sure that you get them wherever they are around this area…You must not allow them to escape. Every day, you must go on patrol, lay ambush for them and you go on raids.”

A little less talk and a lot more action are needed as the Dapchi abduction compounded the still unresolved Chibok schoolgirls’ kidnapping in Borno State in April 2014.  Many of the Chibok captives are still in captivity.

It is disturbing that the terrorists were able to carry out the Dapchi attack and kidnap over 100 schoolgirls. It calls into question the effectiveness of anti-terrorism troops in the region.  The northeastern states of Borno and Yobe have been vulnerable to Boko Haram attacks since the insurgency started in 2009, meaning that there was always a possibility the terrorists would strike again like they did in Chibok as long as they had not been defeated. Indeed, the Dapchi incident has exposed the overconfidence of the authorities that the worst is over.

With the Al-Barnawi faction claiming responsibility for the Dapchi abduction, it remains to be seen whether the story would be different from the Chibok kidnapping attributed to Shekau’s leadership. The factionalisation of Boko Haram will make it harder to fight the group because it means that the anti-terror war will have to be fought against factions. Buratai wants Shekau captured. He should want Al-Barnawi captured too.

Abubakar Shekau was among the “The World’s Most Influential People” listed by TIME in 2015. The identified influencers in the 2015 TIME 100 were diverse enough to include the anti-hero. The TIME portrait said:  “The citizens of Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country, know Abubakar Shekau all too well: he is the most violent killer their country has ever seen.”  Shekau’s terrifying profile was worsened by his group’s outrageous seizure of more than 200 Chibok schoolgirls.

Shekau has been reported dead, or more specifically, reported killed, on at least two occasions; and there is speculation that Shekau may have become “a brand name” for whoever is the leader of Boko Haram.

Before the TIME ranking, an international think tank, the Project for the Study of the 21st Century, said the Boko Haram insurgency was the fourth deadliest conflict in the world in 2014 and was responsible for 11, 529 deaths.  The think tank added that the figure of fatalities could be underestimated.

Al-Barnawi, reportedly in his twenties, is the first son of the late founder of Boko Haram, Mohammed Yusuf, who died in police custody in 2009 following a military operation against the group in Borno State, which further radicalised it. In August 2016, the extremist militant group, ISIS,   appointed Al-Barnawi as the head of Boko Haram, a recognition which was rejected by Shekau.

A revealing profile of the actor at the centre of the Dapchi abduction says: “Little is known about Abu Mus’ab al-Barnawi, who appeared in a Boko Haram video in January 2015 as the group’s spokesman…He wore a turban and his face was blurred out and it was filmed as a sit-down studio interview… Barnawi pulled no punches, warning that towns which resisted Boko Haram in its mission to create an Islamic state would be flattened… He also spoke of being against democracy and foreign education.”

This is not a portrait of the terrorist as a nice man.

Balotelli worth €100m, set for England return

Mario Balotelli is worth €100million and is set to return to Italy or England, according to his agent Mino Raiola.

The 27-year-old forward is out of contract at Nice at the end of the season, having scored 21 goals in 29 games in all competitions this campaign.

Balotelli has enjoyed two strong seasons at the Ligue 1 club, but appears set to return to the Serie A or the Premier League.

Raiola confirmed he had spoken to several clubs about Balotelli, however, he ruled out a return to AC Milan for the 33-time Italy international.

“Mario is ready to come back to Italy. He is one of the 10 best strikers in the world, and the number one in Italy,” he told RAI.

“He is worth €100m but he is a free agent so he is a bargain.

“I’m already negotiating with many teams in England and Italy. I talked with Juventus, Roma, Napoli, Inter.

“AC Milan? No, because there is [sporting director Massimiliano] Mirabelli and I can’t talk with him, I’m not at his level.”

Balotelli played for Inter and Milan in the Serie A and Manchester City and Liverpool in the Premier League prior to his move to Nice. He has scored 13 goals in 19 Ligue 1 outings this season, after finding the back of the net 15 times in 23 games last term.

It is the first time he has gone into double figures in consecutive seasons since netting 12 and 14 for Milan in the 2012-13 and 2013-14 campaigns.

In 2012, Balotelli featured in GQ magazine, where he was named the second-best dressed man in the world behind British musician Tinie Tempah.

Balotelli also appeared on the cover of the November 2012 edition of Time Magazine.

Balotelli is a fan of mixed martial arts, as he has stated in the past that he would love to compete in the sport professionally if he were not a footballer.

    Sneijder joins Qatari club Al-Gharafa

Netherlands international Wesley Sneijder has confirmed he is leaving Nice after a short spell with the Ligue 1 club.

Sneijder, who joined Nice in August after being released from his Galatasaray contract, has started only four league games this season.

And the Qatar Stars League will be the next stop for the 33-year-old after he accepted an 18-month deal to move to Al-Gharafa.

“It’s a nice adventure and a fun challenge,” Sneijder told RTL Boulevard.

“I am really happy to go for it together with my family.”

Sneijder is the most-capped player in Netherlands history but he was left out by Dick Advocaat for October’s World Cup qualifying double-header against Belarus and Sweden.

Former Chile international Luis Jimenez and Slovakia’s Vladimir Weiss will be among Sneijder’s new team-mates at Al-Gharafa.

Meanwhile in the Bundesliga Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng believes he is close to regaining full fitness following a year of injury problems.

The Germany international endured a stop-start 2017, but has returned to training in the new year at a camp in Doha in buoyant mood.

Jupp Heynckes’ side resume their Bundesliga campaign with next Friday’s trip to Bayer Leverkusen and the coach had some words of encouragement for Boateng.

“He told me he has no complaints about me at the moment,” the 29-year-old said in quotes reported by the club’s official website.

“At the moment I feel really good. I’d say that I ended 2017 at 80 per cent. If I can get through this week, I’ll be back at 100 per cent.”

A combination of issues, including chest, thigh and muscular problems, restricted Boateng to featuring in only 24 of Bayern’s 52 games last year and he found that hard to take.

“It wasn’t an easy time. It can take almost a year to get back to how you felt before,” he added, referencing the chest operation he underwent in December 2016.

“The strength in my chest was gone, which changed my running style and my whole dynamic. That’s affected other things again.”

But with his return to the training field complete, Boateng was glad to be testing his body once again.

He said of his current workload: “It’s not too much, but it’s certainly enough. You feel like you’ve done something. I think that’s good. That’s how it is in mid-season training. “I hope now that I can stay consistent and fit.”

Balotelli in special pose with second son Lion

Mario Balotelli has welcomed the birth of his second son, Lion, with a photograph posted in the build-up to Nice’s Europa League clash with Lazio this week.

Reports in Italy last month claimed the former Liverpool and Manchester City striker’s girlfriend Clelia had given birth to a baby boy named Lion, in Zurich.

And now Balotelli, 27, has posed with his second child for the first time to confirm the news. Lion, at almost three weeks old, is a brother to the forward’s four-year-old daughter Pia.

Balotelli had previously kept quiet about the pregnancy, although he did take to Instagram in September to share a snapshot of a pregnant woman’s belly, alongside the simple caption: ‘Loading’.

On this occasion, his post read: ‘Good night #Father&Son’.

The eccentric striker, whose nomadic career has taken him through Italy, England and France, recently claimed to have matured after the controversies that plagued his early career.

He said: ‘I haven’t changed. I’ve matured, I’m growing. I’m not 17 anymore, with experience you grow.

‘I’m not one of the best in the world and I’m not one of the worst in the world. I’m only myself, like always.’

Super Mario has been loved up with girlfriend Clelia and reports in Italy claimed she gave birth to his son named Lion in Zurich last month.
The 27-year-old has now released the first image of himself and Lion, who is now three weeks old.
Balotelli also has a four-year-old daughter named Pia with former girlfriend Raffaella Fico.
The Italian has been in great form for Les Aiglons, who have helped to revitalise his career.
After hitting 15 league goals last term, Balotelli has five in five to start this campaign, despite the team struggling in the bottom half of the table.
It’s a different story in the Europa League though as Nice sit joint-top with Lazio after two games on six points in Group K.
Victory at the Allianz Riviera will all but confirm their place in the knock-out stages of the competition.
While Balotelli will hope to continue his prolific form to convince Giampiero Ventura to consider him for an Azzurri recall ahead of the World Cup.

Nice host Lazio on Thursday night in the Europa League with both sides on six points after winning their opening games against Vitesse Arnhem and Zulte Waregem.
In 2012, Balotelli featured in GQ, where he was named the second-best dressed man in the world behind British musician Tinie Tempah. Balotelli also appeared on the cover of the November 2012 edition of Time Magazine.
Balotelli is a fan of mixed martial arts, as he has stated in the past that he would love to compete in the sport professionally if he were not a footballer
In January 2013, Balotelli’s net worth was estimated to be US$40 million,up from US$25 million in January 2012.

Balotelli scores his 10th goal of the season

Mario Balotelli struck his 10th league goal of the season to lead the fightback as French title contenders Nice drew at home with Caen 2-2 on Friday.

With Nice trailing 2-0 with 20 minutes left, Balotelli ended a four-game goal drought with a close-range finish from defender Dante’s headed pass.

Seven minutes later, substitute Anastasios Donis – on loan this season from Italian champions Juventus – netted the equalizer when his shot hit the right post and the left before rolling over the line

Nice have been the surprise of the season and moved up to second place, one point above defending champion Paris Saint-Germain and two behind leaders Monaco heading into this weekend’s games.

Coach Lucien Favre was delighted with the response from his players, but warned them to be more focused.

‘We never give up, because we keep playing and we believe,’ Favre said. ‘We sometimes forget how to play. You should attack but also defend.’

Balotelli hit the target early into the game with a stinging half-volley from 25 meters out but was then quiet until his goal. By the end, he was strolling around and this prompted Favre to yell at him from the sidelines

Caen hit the home side on the break when striker Ivan Santini jumped above Dante to firmly head in Vincent Bessat’s looping cross from the left for his 12th league goal.

Shortly after halftime, forward Yann Karamoh netted his sixth to make it 2-0.

Le Bihan galvanized Nice when he came off the bench in the 56th to replace midfielder Wylan Cyprien, who went off injured.

Cyprien has been one of Nice’s best players this season and his absence will be a blow.

‘I’m not a doctor, but it’s the knee and that’s never very good news,’ Favre said. ‘We need to see the (medical) results.’

Elsewhere on Friday night, Marseille beat Angers 3-0.

  • Rivere: No regret having Balotelli

    Rivere: No regret having Balotelli

Nice president Jean-Pierre Rivere has given his backing to charismatic and controversial striker Mario Balotelli despite his recent slump in form.

Balotelli, who signed for Nice after leaving Liverpool on a free transfer last summer, started off very brightly in France, reaching double figures before Christmas.

However, he  has endured a big dip in form since then, scoring just one goal in his last six appearances.

In those matches, the former Liverpool and Manchester City striker has had more red cards than goals – he has been sent off three times in 2016-17.

However, the Nice president is adamant that they made the right decision to sign Balotelli.

Rivere said: ‘There are periods like this in the life of any player.

‘He made a very good start to the season. At the moment things are not as good but I hope he will soon be back to the Mario that we saw at the beginning of the season.

‘Overall we are very happy. He is in a good frame of mind and we do not regret having Mario with us.’

Balotelli’s goals early on in the campaign helped lift Nice to the top of Ligue 1 but despite his poor return recently, his side remains in contention for the title.

Nice currently sit third in Ligue 1, level on points with second-placed Paris Saint-Germain and three behind leaders Monaco with just 11 games remaining.

Lucien Favre’s side face Dijon away next in the league on Saturday and will be hoping to maintain the pressure on Monaco as they approach the business end of the season.

Obama condemns horrific terrorist attack in Nice

U.S. President Barack Obama on Friday, condemned what in strongest terms appears to be a horrific terrorist attack” in Nice, France.

Obama who made this known in a statement that was issued from the white house said that he has offered French officials possible assistance to investigate the attack.

“Any assistance that they may need to investigate this attack and bring those responsible to justice.

“We stand in solidarity and partnership with France, our oldest ally, as they respond to and recover from this attack.

“On this Bastille Day, we are reminded of the extraordinary resilience and democratic values that have made France an inspiration to the entire world.

“We know that the character of the French Republic will endure long after this devastating and tragic loss of life” Obama said.

In another development, the U.S. President will be meeting with the Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto at the White House by July 22.

The talk is a follow up to a summit of North American leaders hosted by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau last month.

After that meeting the leaders vowed to press forward with cooperation on trade and addressing climate change.

World leaders condemn attack in France

The Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) in the Mongolian capital began with a moment of silence on Friday following the attacks in Nice, the report said.

“It’s a sad day for France, Europe and all of us here in Mongolia, we are united with the French people and government in their fight against violence and terror,” EU President Donald Tusk said.

In his opening remarks the host, Mongolian President Tsakhia Elbegdorj, spoke of “very sad news from France.

He called on the 34 heads of government and state present from 51 countries in Europe and Asia to observe a minute’s silence for the victims.

Robert Fico, prime minister of Slovakia, which currently holds the rotating presidency of the Council of the EU, told the meeting that their discussions should include reflection on what happened in Nice.

“The fight against terrorism is among the highest priorities of our governments. We condemn terrorist attacks in every form, wherever and whenever they occur,” Fico said.

The summit has already been overshadowed by the dispute over China’s territorial claims in the South China Sea.

The Permanent Court of Arbitration in the Hague on Tuesday upheld a complaint brought by the Philippines about contested islets in the South China Sea, which holds key shipping lanes and is believed to be rich in mineral and marine resources.

China refused to take part in the arbitration and said the verdict was null and void.

ASEM was established in 1996 to deepen relations between Asia and Europe.

  • 84 killed in truck attack in France

At least 84 people have been reported killed and about 100 more injured when an armed man drove a truck at full speed into a crowd in Nice, France on Thursday night.
The crowd had gathered to watch the Bastille Day fireworks display over the seafront in Nice
Agency reports said French counter-terrorism police are investigating the incident after the driver careered into the dense crowd and continued to drive into them for a distance of 2km.
The French interior ministry confirmed that the driver had been shot dead by police, who are investigating whether he acted alone or had accomplices.
