NigComSat connects over 200 communities with internet

No fewer than 200 rural communities across the country have been connected with internet facilities to deepen financial inclusion and digital services for the development of the country, the Managing Director of Nigeria Satellite Communications (Ltd), Mrs Jane Egerton-Idehen has said.

The projects were executed within the past two years by the present administration.

According to her, the rural connectivity project is aimed at connecting Nigerian rural dwellers with Internet facilities to enhance productivity and improve the country’s Gross Domestic Product, GDP.

Speaking at a one-day training programme for Information Technology Reporters in Abuja at the conference hall of NigComSat, she said there is an going programme driven by the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani to connect all the 774 local councils in the country with Internet facilities and access.

She said the training programme became imperative for reporters to help establish “the link between what we build in control rooms and what every day Nigerians understand about technology”.

Represented by the Executive Director, Technical Service, Abiodun Attah at NigComSat, the Managing Director said satellite technology is key in modern world to promote Communications, military operations, prediction of weather, mapping and other specialised areas.

“We live in a digital age where satellites and ICT are no longer abstract or futuristic; they are part of our daily life. Satellites power internet in rural villages, help us predict the weather, support disaster response, and even strengthen national security. ICT, on the other hand, is the nervous system of our society, it drives communication, education, healthcare, commerce and governance.

“But here is the challenge: as critical as these technologies are, they are often underreported or misunderstood. Not because the media does not care, but because access to clear, foundational knowledge has not always been there. And that is why today matters.

“This session is about equipping you, the storytellers, with the right context and tools to simplify, demystify and humanise satellite and ICT stories for the Nigerian public.

“Think about it: when you write about spectrum allocation or broadband penetration, you’re not just covering technical jargon. You are shaping how people see opportunities in technology. You are influencing how policymakers respond. You are even inspiring young Nigerians to dream of careers in tech and space.”

“Nigeria is not just a consumer of technology; we are creators and contributors. Our satellites, our ICT infrastructure, and our vibrant startup ecosystem are proof of this.

“The ICT sector is one of the fastest growing in Africa, and with it comes huge potential. But for us to unlock that potential responsibly, we need strong, informed media voices,” the NigComSat boss said.

In her remarks, the Head of Media and Corporate Communications, Hajiya Aisha Bantam said the theme of the training: “Equipping the Media, Reporting it Right,” could not have been more timely.

“In an era where technology continues to evolve rapidly, the responsibility of the media goes beyond reporting—it is about accuracy, context and balance. For us at NigComSat, we recognize that the media is a strategic partner in our mission to connect Nigeria and Africa through satellite technology, and by

NigComSat targets revenue boost beyond N3bn through tech solutions — MD

The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited (NigComSat), Mrs. Jane Egerton-Idehen, has revealed the agency’s plans to exceed its current annual revenue profile of ₦3 billion.

Speaking at the 18th edition of Devs in Government, held at the Digital Economy Complex in Mbora, Abuja, Egerton-Idehen said NigComSat is in advanced stages of developing and deploying technology-driven solutions to significantly boost its earnings.

The programme, initiated by the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, aims to unite government Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) on common digital platforms in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu. This year’s theme was “A Community of Technologists and Tech Enthusiasts in the Nigerian Civil Service.”

Egerton-Idehen also disclosed that NigComSat plans to leverage geo-sensing and geo-location applications to support security agencies in tackling issues such as terrorism, kidnapping, and banditry, thereby contributing to national peace and safety.

She said the 18th edition which produced innovative solutions from ideas generated by participants from the MDAs was an eye opener for diverse opportunities upon which NigComSat can deploy its satellite assets to improve its revenue, and create jobs opportunities for Nigerians.

She said, “I think one of the things we’ve learned from this session is about some of the gaps in the system. We are referring to awareness in terms of our products and services and how technology innovations can deliver them effectively and efficiently.

“If it is well established that the people are aware of us and what we do. Then it’s easier for them to use our services or our solutions.

“Right now we will begin to tap into other revenue streams we haven’t talked about. Like expanding our broadcasting solution. And if we do that, we can probably double or triple our existing broadcasting revenue.

“The ideas/ solutions here also showed us that there are new revenue streams we can do. We can take up our apps, building apps, using them for geo-sensing, geo-location to address certain challenges. These are new ideas. It showed us how we can also stop losing money, and ensure revenue increases, by having automation in the way we deliver solutions all the time.

“So if you do all these things together, you don’t just grow up. You actually stay. So at the moment, currently we are projecting to average in a year about 3 billion naira in revenue. But if you can think about all these ideas and attitude, it means we can do much more.”
