    Man kills self after losing wife in Niger

    A 30-year-old man has committed suicide after the death of his wife in Ikumi Shako Ward, Gurara Local Government Area, Niger State.

    It was learnt that the man identified as Mr. Stephen had lost his second wife in March 2025 and had been depressed after her death.

    Sources close to him said that the deceased repeatedly told close friends and family members that he could not continue living without her in his life.

    On Thursday morning, neighbours disclosed that they saw Stephen with a gun but did not know what he wanted to use it for.

    Some hours later, his body was found in a secluded place with the gun in his hand and a gunshot on his head.

    Neighbours disclosed that Stephen’s first wife is still alive, adding that he had two children.

    The Gurara Coordinator of the Nigeria Youth Council of Nigeria, Comrade Adamu Haruna, who confirmed the incident, called for mental health awareness and support, especially during the times of grief.

    Soldier cuts off shoe seller’s fingers in Minna over payment dispute

    A soldier identified as Sudik on Sallah day cut off the fingers of a shoe seller, Abdulrahman Salisu, at his shop near Jolly Bread in Minna, the Niger State capital.

    According to Abdulrahman, Sudik had approached his shop to buy a pair of shoes, and after attending to him, the soldier claimed to have made payment via a bank transfer. But Abdulrahman told him that he had not yet received the alert.

    The situation took a violent turn when Sudik suddenly pulled out a cutlass and swung it at Abdulrahman’s head when he insisted that his money must be paid. In an attempt to defend himself, Abdulrahman raised his left hand, resulting in three of his fingers being severed.

    As he cried out for help, Sudik and two others who had accompanied him fled. Abdulrahman later reported the attack at the nearest police station.

    It was learnt that Sudik has been arrested by the security authorities, while Abdulrahman is receiving medical treatment at the IBB Specialist Hospital in Minna.

    Meanwhile, traders and shop owners from Mobil roundabout, Jolly Bread and Obasanjo Shopping Complex have raised concerns over increasing cases of attacks and armed robbery in the area.

    They have called on the state government to improve security measures, saying they live in fear.

    Wife kills husband with pestle in Niger

    A 27-year-old woman, Fatima Dzuma, has been arrested by the police for killing her 25-year-old husband, Baba Aliyu, in Lafiyagi Dzwafu village in Katcha Local Government Area of Niger State.

    Dzuma was said to have married Baba three years ago as his second wife after she had divorced her first husband but had not given birth to Baba, while Baba’s first wife had just given birth and preparations were underway for the naming ceremony.

    Sources told The Nation that the deceased and the suspect usually have misunderstandings, and even the night before Dzuma killed Baba, they had a fight where Baba beat up Dzuma.

    Confessing to the crime, Dzuma narrated that there was an altercation between them that night, and she was beaten by her husband, who left the house after beating her.

    “When he came back, he went to bed. I used a rope to tie his neck, and he could not struggle. I hit him with a pestle three times, twice on his head and once on his hand. I took advantage of his sleeping because his sleep is always deep.

    “After I killed him, I put him inside a mat, threw him over the fence and dragged him to the bush in the backyard before coming back to wash the blood and excreta that came out of his body when I killed him,” she said.

    When asked why she killed him, she said they had a misunderstanding where she told him that she did not love him anymore, and he beat her up.

    When the family of Baba was looking for him, she claimed she had not seen him but confessed to the crime three days after she killed him.

    According to her, only she carried out the act without the help of anybody.

    The Niger State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Wasiu, said the body of Aliyu was found in a bush close to the house, adding that the suspect is in police custody.

    “She confessed that she used a pestle to hit her husband when he was asleep and she later tied the deceased with clothes and rope and rolled the corpse to a nearby bush with a mat.

    “The body was taken to the General Hospital, Bida for post-mortem while the suspect was taken to custody. She will soon be transferred to SCID Minna for further investigation and prosecution,” Abiodun said.

    Father of seven arrested for s3xually abusing eight girls, one boy

    A 53-year-old father of seven children, Abdullahi Imman, has been arrested for s3xually abusing eight girls and one boy aged between six and 11 years at Tayi area of Minna, Niger State capital.

    Imman, popularly called Abba by residents in the community, said he preyed on the children by luring them into his provisions shop with biscuits and sweets.

    He admitted dipping his fingers into their private parts until he was satisfied and promised them more sweets and biscuits if they came back again.

    Imman said he could not stop himself from involving in the act despite being married and having seven children.

    He said: “I have been into this act since March, 2024. I cannot stop myself even though I am married with seven children. It is an act I cannot stop even though I have tried.”

    The suspect was arrested after some reports were made to the police at the GRA Police Division. The suspect was then transferred to the state Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) Minna for further investigation while the children were taken to hospital for medical examination.

    Niger earmarks 250,000 hectares of land for cultivation

    The Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umar Bago, has affirmed the readiness of his state to compliment the federal government’s agricultural drive by presenting itself for the pilot of 500,000 hectares 2024 dry season farming.

    Governor Bago stated this yesterday while speaking to journalists at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, after a meeting with President Bola Tinubu.

    According to the governor, already, the state had concluded plans with some agricultural firms on the cultivation of a total of 250,000 hectares of land for dry season farming.

    Bago, who said he was at the Presidential Villa to greet President Tinubu, added that Niger State is now the leading state in terms of the food security initiative of the Tinubu administration.

    “Niger State is now the leading state in terms of the Food Security Initiative of Mr. President and there are some initiatives we have started, we’re about to do a 250,000 hectares dry season farming, which we’ve already signed an agreement with some companies for off-take and just to keep him up to speed about what we’re doing in agriculture.

    “If you listened carefully to Mr. President’s New Year’s speech, you would have seen the emphasis on agriculture and also the 500,000 hectares that the government is planning to farm this 2024 and Niger State has already presented itself as a pilot state for that project and that we are also ambitious to also match with the federal government 500 for 500”, he said.

    The governor said that President Tinubu is positive about the agric-project in Niger State while also encouraging the State to sustain the initiatives.

    “He is positive about it, he is very delighted and happy with what we’re doing and he has given us his blessing and encouragement,” he said.

    On adequate security, Governor Bago said that farmers were already back to the farm in Niger State
