At least 35 people have lost their lives and many others injured while scooping petrol from a tanker that had an accident along the Agaie-Bida Road in Katcha Local Government Area of Niger state.

The accident occurred around 11am yesterday in Essan community along Bida to Agaie road.

Spokesperson of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Assistant Corps Marshal Olusegun Ogungbemide, stated that the victims were caught in a fire explosion while attempting to scoop fuel from a crashed tanker.

According to Ogungbemide, the crash occurred at about 12:15 pm when a tanker laden with fuel lost control due to the bad stretch of the road and overturned.

He said: “Moments after the crash, residents of the area reportedly trooped to the scene to scoop fuel from the fallen tanker. Tragedy struck when the volatile substance ignited, resulting in an inferno that consumed 35 victims and destroyed properties.”

The Niger State Chairman of Tanker Drivers and Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) National Ex-Officio, Comrade Farouk Mohammed Kawo, said the tanker was coming from Lagos.

He lamented that over 30 tanker trailers had involved in accident within this month in that particular area due to the poor state of the road.

He said youths in the community have continued to scoop fuel and oil from trailers that have accidents on the road, adding that last Sunday, a tanker trailer carrying groundnut oil had an accident and its product was scooped.

He appealed to the state government to urgently come to their aid by grading the particular area to ease movement of motorists and prevent loss of lives and properties.

Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago in a statement described the tanker explosion as worrisome, unfortunate, and pathetic.

“This is yet another painful, difficult, and tragic one for the people and the state government,” he said.

He said it is disheartening how people have continued to approach a fallen tanker to scoop its contents despite several sensitisation on the danger of such action.

Bago urged people to place more value on their lives.

The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) yesterday expressed sadness over the incident.

NGF Chairman AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq condoled with the people and Niger State Government, especially the families of the victims.

“Our sympathies are with every family that is affected in this unfortunate incident. We commend all the emergency responders for their humanitarian assistance to the victims. This disaster again calls attention to safety issues in every aspect of our life. This is particularly important in how combustible items are stored and transported at every stage,” he said

    • ‘Abdulsalami, Babangida have helped to stabilise Nigeria’
    • Senator Tinubu is Nigeria’s number one Ambassador, says ex-Head of State

The First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, yesterday donated N100 million to the families of 70 victims of the oil tanker explosion that occurred at Dikko Junction near Suleja in Niger State on January 18.

Speaking at the Niger State Government House in Minna during her private visit to the state, Mrs. Tinubu said she donated the money to alleviate the sufferings of the victims’ families so that they would not feel the impact of the disaster.

“We usually write a condolence letter to the governor each time we are aware of any challenges in the state. But this recent one, I know I had to do something. We are donating N100 million to rehabilitate the families. We are looking at 70 families. Each family will have N1 million to help them settle while the balance will be shared among them for other extra expenses, like food items and others.

“This is to help them so that they won’t feel the disaster and its impact. We pray such a disaster will not happen again. We pray that this will be an end to it, so that progress can come in,” she said.

The First Lady said she was not in the state for an official visit but on a private visit to two former Heads of State, Generals Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida and Abdulsalami Abubakar.

She hailed Governor Umaru Mohammed Bago for his administration’s agricultural programme.

“You have been doing a lot in agriculture. You should be proud of yourself. May God help you,” Mrs. Tinubu said.

Governor Bago expressed appreciation to the First Lady for her visit and her donation to the victims of the oil tanker explosion.

The governor assured her that his wife, who is the State Coordinator of Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), would share the donation as the First Lady had directed.

He said: “This is a consolidation of our relationship as a state and country. We are grateful that you have come to share with us in pains and commiserate with Niger residents over the losses we had in recent times, the tanker explosion in Dikko, the dynamite explosion in Magama Local Government Area and Mashegu and the collapsed mines in Shiroro Local Government.

“Though this is not a state visit, it is a personal visit. But we really appreciate you, Ma. Thank you so much for your widow’s mite…”

Also, Mrs. Tinubu yesterday embarked on private visits to two former Heads of State – Generals Ibrahim Babangida and Abdulsalami Abubakar – in Minna, the Niger State capital.

The First Lady applauded the contributions of former military leaders in stabilising the country, especially during the subsidy removal when tension was high.

Addressing reporters when she visited General Abubakar, Mrs. Tinubu said General Abdulsalami had always sent words of encouragement to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

She referred to both former leaders as fathers of the nation, adding that it is only proper to show them respect by paying them visits.

“I haven’t seen Daddy (Abdulsalami) and Mummy for a long time. We did not make it here when we were campaigning and we feel it is not proper for us to be talking to them only on the phone. Where I come from, it is not considered respectful. It is only right for a Nigerian who has a proper upbringing to come and greet them.

“General Abdulsalami is doing a lot for us, trying to juggle and stabilise the government to an extent. This is because with subsidy removal, people were getting a lot agitated. But we thank them for the patience because, if they do not believe that we can do it, it is not what we should be talking about now.

“Daddy (Abdulsalami) has always encouraged Mr. President. So, it is only right for us to come and visit him. When I went to Abeokuta (Ogun State), I went to see Baba (ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo) even though he wasn’t there. But he said he would come and see me in Lagos.

“It is right for me to come here and greet them because they are the fathers of our nation, the patriarchs of this great nation. It is good for us to pay our respect. It is nothing political; it is just respect for me and Hajiya Nana Shettima (the Vice President’s wife). That is why we do not have any entourage, like the governors’ wives accompanying us. It is a private visit,” she said.

General Abubakar expressed appreciation for the First Lady’s visit, saying: “It is a pressure for the First Lady to come and visit us. She has been planning to come and pay her respects to us. I want to thank the First Lady for what she is doing and will continue to do, especially for the young children, the motherless and the orphans.

“She has done very well during her first and second years in office. She has done the Nigerian fabric, and she has done a lot of things to bring out Nigeria and place a positive image of Nigeria to Nigerians and the rest of the world. She is Nigeria’s number one Ambassador.

“I want to thank her for what she has been doing. She has been carrying the governors’ wives along, and in all the things you are doing, you are in consultation with the former First Ladies.

“I want to thank you for this visit. Through you, I want to say thank you to Mr. President for allowing you to come and visit us.”

    • ‘How I lost my two brothers to inferno’

The bustling Dikko Junction in Gurara Local Government Area of Niger State, known for its lively markets and commerce, has been devastated by the tanker explosion that occurred in the area last weekend. The tragic incident claimed no fewer than 98 lives and left 69 other people injured. Properties worth millions of naira were also destroyed.

For the affected business owners and residents, the scars run deep, and the losses are incalculable. Many of the residents also lost their relatives. One of them is Musa Aliyu who lost his two brothers while one other was seriously injured. At the time of writing, the injured one was still in critical condition in the hospital while the family members are in doubt of his ability to survive the first degree burns.

Mr. Michael Ondie, a provision shop owner at Dikko Junction, said it was his quick thinking and action that saved his family from being consumed in the fire. His shop was, however, not spared from the tragic incident.

Recalling the events of that fateful morning with a heavy heart, Ondie said: “It was around 8 or 9 a.m. when we saw the tanker leave the road and was about climbing the bridge. It then fell and fuel began to pour out.

“When I saw that fuel was rushing down towards my shop, I told my children who were arranging our goods for the day to get out of the shop and go to the other side of the road.

“When they refused, I had to chase them out. By this time, people had started to gather. I do not know where they came from.

“So many of them gathered and they began to scoop fuel with different containers. I was shouting that the thing could explode but no one listened.

“Women, children and all from other places were struggling to scoop fuel, and rather than run for safety, more and more people were coming with containers to scoop fuel.

“My repeated warning that they should leave because the tanker could explode was not heeded.”

Ondie said the situation soon got out of control in spite of intervention from security agents. He said: “Security agents, including policemen and vigilantes, began to drag and chase people away, but they were overpowered.

“There was little else they could do, because as the people were dragging with them and more were still coming with some even threatening to engage them in physical combat, the security men were left with no option but to leave them.

“The tanker owners tried to discharge the fuel into another truck, using two pumping machines. But even while that was going on, the people were still struggling to scoop their shares of the fuel.

“The tanker fell at about 9 am but it was not until around 11 am that the explosion occurred.

“For those two hours the security agents on ground were trying to chase them away to no avail.

“There were even some touts who insisted that boys from outside the area would not benefit from the fuel which was pouring.

“They swore that there would be trouble of those other boys dared come close to the place.

“Some people who heard the threat started running away, knowing that it would not be a pleasant experience if the touts should start their trouble.

“But it was not the touts that started the fire. It just started unexpectedly from under the tanker.

“The fire was not caused by generator spark as everyone is saying; it came from the back of the truck. The fire just appear from the under the tanker, then it started burning.

“As people were running, the fire was following them. Even some passersby were affected. Someone caught by fire would run into another person and the person too would catch fire.

“My house is across the road, but one of my daughters who had plugged her phone inside the shop ran there to pick it, but before she could even reach that mango tree, the fire had affected her and her two legs burnt up to her back.

“As I am speaking to you, she is lying at the hospital in Dutse, which is where I am coming from.”

Recounting his losses, Ondie said: “My shop is what our family depends on for our needs.

The deep freezers, crates of drinks, bags of charcoal, bags of rice and other goods worth more than N2.5 million were all reduced to ashes.

“Now I don’t know how the government can assist us in this. Even my daughter that is hospitalised is another of my major concern. I am fighting for her to get well.

“Whatever the government can do for us, we will appreciate.”

The daughter of Ondie who was affected by fire, 16 years old Favour, wondered how her family would now cope with their main source of livelihood gone. “The shop has been our only means of survival for the past 17 years,” she said.

“My father used it to feed and train us. He does not have any job apart from the shop.

“In the last 17 years that is where my dad has been feeding and training us.

“Now that the shop is burnt, we don’t have anywhere to go again. We have nowhere to turn to.

“I just want to plead with the government to help us rebuild,” she pleaded, nursing the injuries she sustained while trying to escape from the fire.

For Mr. Yahuza Danladi, a maize grinder who had invested heavily in his machines and produce, the incident has left him and his family on the brink.

Danladi said: “This place has a machine for grinding maize. There is also a cold room with two machines.

“I had 100 bags of maize, 17 bags of cassava, 80 bags of dusa and 15 bags of luku, but everything is gone.

“My family and workers depend on this business to survive. Now we have nothing,” he lamented, estimating his losses at nearly N20 million.

Aliyu Mohamed, a scrap dealer, also shared his despair, saying “I lost properties worth ₦1.5 million. This business was my livelihood; the source from which I fed my family.

“Now I don’t know where to start from. I need help.”

Musa Aliyu’s residence is close to the place of the incident. While the fire did not get to his house, his household suffered a bigger calamity with two of his brothers burnt in the inferno and one other lying in critical condition in the hospital.

He said: “One of my brothers burnt in the fire was not involved in scooping fuel. He had only gone there to tell the younger ones to return home when he heard that they had gone there to scoop fuel.

“It was while he was there that the fire began and he was caught in it.”

Musa said one of his deceased brothers had six children and one wife while the second one had three children, wondering what would become of the children now that their breadwinners are gone.

“My third brother is still lying critically in the hospital and no one knows if he will survive or not. In fact, everyone in the hospital is praying because those who are in the hospital are in critical situation and we hope they will survive.”

The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), in its last press release on the extent of the disaster, stated that 20 shops were destroyed and countless livelihoods impacted.

“This is a devastating incident for the community,” the Director General, Abdullahi Baba Arah, said.

NSEMA also disclosed that 98 people died in the tanker explosion, saying that the death count as at 12 pm on Monday stood at 98 while the injured were 69 in number.

Some sources in Dikko said that the deceased were not all among those who had gone to scoop fuel from the fallen tanker, adding that some innocent bystanders and shop owners were also affected by the explosion.

Residents and business owners are now calling on the government for urgent assistance. They also want stricter regulations for tanker drivers and immediate support to rebuild their lives.

“This is the third tanker explosion in this area within a year,” Ondie noted. “The recklessness of drivers needs to stop. We can’t keep living in fear.”

As the community mourns its dead and struggles to rise from the ashes, the plea for help is loud and clear.

For the people of Dikko, rebuilding isn’t just about recovering properties, it is about reclaiming their lives and hope for the future.

Niger tanker explosion: Sultan urges review of fuel transportation safety protocols

    …seeks survey of explosion-prone highways

The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of Jama’atu Nasir Islam (JNI), Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, has reacted to the fuel tanker explosion at Dikko Junction, Niger State on Saturday, calling on the federal government to review the safety protocols guiding fuel transportation in Nigeria.

In a statement signed and made available to journalists in Kaduna on Sunday by the Secretary-General of JNI, Prof. Khalid Abubakar Aliyu, the Sultan also called for maximum surveillance of explosion-prone highways.

While recalling several similar tanker explosion incidents, the Sultan lamented that tankers conveying petroleum products have been sources of disastrous road accidents, with agonising loss of lives and property in Nigeria.

According to the statement, “At the instance of its President-General, His Eminence, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji(Dr.) Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, CFR, mni, JNI received with utmost concern the unfortunate truck explosion arising from a tanker conveying petroleum products.

“The gory incident is just but an addition to the series of many others of such explosions in recent times. It is so unfortunate that tankers conveying petroleum products are now sources of disastrous road accidents, with agonizing loss of lives and property, in Nigeria.

“The Dikko junction incidence is too many a tragedy to be waved, taking into account that the junction is on a major highway connecting northern Nigeria, particularly the Northwest to southern Nigeria. More so, the same episodes have occurred in the most recent past in Jigawa State twice.

“With nostalgia the unfortunate 15th October 2024 fuel tanker explosion in Majiya, Jigawa state is said to have claimed over 200 persons, injuring many, while on Tuesday, 12th November 2024 another tanker exploded at Gamoji, along Kano-Maiduguri highway claiming many lives.

“A similar incident occurred on Wednesday, 14th January 2025 at the Epe-Ijebu Odeyemi expressway. Sometime in 2023 at Iganmu Bridge, Lagos State many vehicles were destroyed and lives lost, arising from a petroleum tanker explosion.

“Be as it may, JNI is genuinely worried over the serial explosions from petroleum tankers, without any seeming efforts by relevant stakeholders to address the misnomer.

    “Nevertheless, JNI implores: Governments to immediately control all dangerous bends and/or sharp curves/corners and parking lots that have become prone to such accidents, by mounting FRSC emergency detachments – response offices, as well as Federal Fire Service offices with state-of-art equipment;

    “Nigerians should always avoid explosion-prone areas to reduce casualty, no matter the temptation for assumed loot, no life is worth losing carelessly;

    “Relevant transport and/or road unions should begin sensitising and educating their members on dangers associated with reckless driving – especially one-way driving, which has now become too common on the Nigerian highways and they should always cooperate with security agencies on highways;

    “Governments at all levels, in collaboration with different security agencies should be up and doing against the recklessness of all drivers plying major highways, most especially the tanker drivers, as desperate situations need desperate measures;

    “Governments should act beyond mere verbal condemnations on related matters. Nigerians are desirous of more concrete actions against all forms of unfortunate incidences, criminals and criminalities;

“There is the urgent need for the FGN to review the safety protocols guiding fuel transportation in Nigeria, as the repeated explosion calls for serious review, while surveillance should, maximally be accorded to explosion-prone highways, and lastly:

“The FGN should in the name of Allah, the Most High, expedite action in completing the 40 kilometer Suleja-Minna road, dual carriageway connecting Abuja and Niger State, which has been ongoing for over 20 years to ease movement of goods and services, as well as save lives.

“Meanwhile, the Sultan of Sokoto beseeches Allah’s infinite mercy upon the departed souls, praying for their repose in Jannatul-Firdaws, and also seeks Allah, the Most Compassionate, to grant patience and solace to the bereaved families during this incredibly difficult time. May Allah, the Most Merciful, bestow healing and swift recovery upon all the injured. Amin,” the statement read.
