    Customs intercept live turtles, military hardware at airport

    The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Murtala Muhammed Airport Command said, yesterday, that its operatives intercepted 250 live turtles, Canadian Cannabis Sativa, and military accoutrements worth over N3.32 billiin in the last three months.

    Its Area Controller, Micheal Awe, said the command generated N144.2billion between January and October this year, as against N74.28billion recorded in the same period in 2023.

    The contrabands, he said, were imported into the country from Canada, and Turkiye, among others, between July and October this year.

    The items seized by the command included 23 pieces of Walkie Talkies; 175 pieces of military helmets and 50 pieces of drones.

    Others include seven packages of 200mg and 225mg of Tramadol Hydrochloride; 1.5kg of Pangolin Scales and 0.2kg of Porcupine Pins.

    The efforts to combat illicit trade, Awe said, “yielded impressive results, with total Duty Paid Value (DPV) of seized items amounting to N3.32billion between July and October 2024. The seized items contravene some of the provisions of the extant laws as enshrined in the Nigeria Customs Service Act (NCS Act) 2023.”

    Speaking on the revenue generated by the command, he announced 94 per cent increase in import duties of the command which generated N144.2billion.

    Awe attributed the amount generated to enhanced trade facilitation, improved stakeholder compliance, effective law enforcement, strategic resource deployment, interagency collaboration, efficient cargo clearance and intelligent risk management strategies.

    “The NCS under my leadership during the period under review January to October 2024, generated revenue worth N144.2billion from Customs duties and other charges. In comparison to the revenue collected in the same period in 2023 which stood at N74.28billion this clearly shows a progressive difference of N69.9billion, depicting 94 per cent increase,” he said.

    Moving forward, Awe added that the command will enhance trade facilitation measures, strengthen anti-smuggling efforts, improve stakeholder engagement and leverage on technology for efficient operations.

    “I express appreciation to the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi and his management team for their unwavering support in carrying out official tasks effectively. Similarly, I hail officers and men of the command for their hard work and dedication towards achieving this great feat,” he said.

    He also recognised contributions of stakeholders, mostly, the importers, exporters and clearing agents for their cooperation and compliance to extant laws.

    The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has launched B’Odogwu, a new Unified Customs Management System, starting with a pilot phase in Lagos at Port & Terminal Multi-Services Limited (PTML).

    The Comptroller General of Customs (CGC), Adewale Adeniyi, stated that the innovative platform represents a significant milestone in Nigeria Customs’ modernisation journey, aligning with global best practices.

    He explained that “B’Odogwu is the new customs management system that embodies her vision for a paperless customs administration that facilitates seamless trade while maintaining robust security measures.

    “It is important to note that B’Odogwu will eventually replace the current Nigeria Integrated Customs Information System (NICIS II) as the NCS Legacy System. The system has been developed with foresight, acknowledging that the National Single Window will be coming on board soon and B’Odogwu will be integrated with it when implemented by the Federal Government,” he stated.

    He acknowledged that the initiative is fully supported by the legal framework provided in the Nigeria Customs Service Act 2023. “Specifically, Sections 28 and 29 of the Act empowers the Service to develop, maintain and employ electronic systems while ensuring transparency and stakeholder consultation.”

    Speaking further, the CGC urged stakeholders to embrace the change with optimism and provide constructive feedback that will help improve the system.

    “As we commence this pilot, I urge all stakeholders to embrace this change with optimism and provide constructive feedback that will help us refine and improve the system, as your input is crucial to the success of this initiative.”

    “B’Odogwu will enhance our ability to streamline end-to-end business processes, provide stakeholders with customised integration capabilities, support more efficient and intelligent business decisions, and facilitate ease of doing business.”

    The Comptroller General expressed gratitude to terminal operators, customs officers, licensed customs agents and the Trade Modernisation Project team for their support and commitment to the project’s success.

    The system’s development is a collaborative effort between the Nigeria Customs Service and the Trade Modernisation Project team.

    The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) received the Golden World Award for Crisis Management from the International Public Relations Association (IPRA) during a gala at the Metropol Palace Hotel in Belgrade, Serbia, on October 15, 2024.

    The award recognises the visionary leadership of the NCS Comptroller General, CGC Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, whose use of public relations tools in the first 100 days of his tenure enhanced awareness and citizen compliance to customs reforms.

    In collaboration with Image Merchants Promotion Limited (IMPR), the NCS launched a comprehensive strategy that garnered widespread praise and strengthened partnerships with stakeholders, boosting border security and revenue generation.

    As a testament to its vital role in the campaign, Image Merchants, known for publishing influential platforms such as PRNigeria and Economic Confidential, was recognized as the PR Agency of the Year (Crisis Management).

    The plaques, which were presented by IPRA President Nataša Pavlović Bujas, marked another significant achievement for Nigerian professionals on an international stage.

    IPRA Secretary General Philip Sheppard commended Adeniyi’s transformative management and highlighted its crucial impact on the success of the campaign.

    “In just 100 days, Adeniyi’s campaign not only fortified stakeholder collaboration and improved border security but also catalyzed a substantial increase in revenue, instilling renewed hope and optimism for the future,” Sheppard remarked.

    Prior to his appointment as the Customs CG, Adeniyi served as NCS’s longest-tenured spokesperson and held the positions of Vice President and Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR).

    Customs seizes 94,550 litres of petrol

    Nigeria Customs Service (NCS)’s Operational Whirlwind has seized a total 94,550 litres of petrol from across the country.

    The petrol, parked mostly in Jerry cans and drums, were intercepted from people suspected to be diverting the product from where they were intended for domestic petrol stations to mostly neighbouring countries.

    Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC), Bashir Adeniyi, who announced the seizures in Yola yesterday, said the seizures resulted from further anti-smuggling efforts after he first addressed reporters on their activities on June 10, this year.

    The CGC had announced that the Operational Whirlwind had seized 150,950 litres of PMS worth N105,965,391.

    At a press conference yesterday, the CGC, who was represented by a Customs Deputy Comptroller-General, Olaniyi Olajugun, said the Operation Whirlwind has continued to make strides in curbing the illegal export of petroleum products.

    He added that the operations had recorded substantial seizures in various locations which include the Northwest borders in the Sokoto-Kebbi axis, the Southwest borders around Seme-Badagry and Idiroko axis, as well as the Southern borders in Cross River and Always Ibom states.

    Earlier, at the Adamawa/Taraba Customs Area Command headquarters in Yola, the National Coordinator of Operation Whirlwind, Controller Hussein Keinde, said the seizures marked another milestone in the fight against economic saboteurs.

    Customs collects N1.6tr in Apapa Port

    The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Apapa Port Command yesterday said it generated N1, 6trillion as revenue at the end of the third quarter (Q3) of this year.

    The cash is higher than N1,1trillion  that was collected as total revenue of the Command, last year.

    The total amount generated in the third quarter of this year alone, is N1,610,906,781,421.82k, while the total amount generated by the command for the whole of last year was N1,172,414,793,960.32k

    Addressing reporters, its Area Controller, Babatunde Olomu, described the feat as a fallout of diligence and integrity, saying the command will continue to engage the stakeholders to improve on the revenue collection achievements and reduce smuggling recorded to the lowest minimum in the command.

    He stated that the N201.8 billion collected in July 2024 and N193.9billion in September 2024 were spectacular figures capable of being replicated again in the last quarter of the year beginning from this month October.

    Olomu added that the various trade facilitation programmes put in place by the Comptroller General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi like advance ruling, time release study and Authorised Economic Operator (AEO) “are being dutifully implemented for the overall benefit of the nation’s economy.”

    While commending officers of the command for the achievement in revenue collection relying on diligent examination and uncompromising interventions through issuance of demand notices, of, when and where when necessary, Olomu reiterated the CGC’s zero tolerance for smuggling and corrupt practices.

    He said the command, “will continually engage with all stakeholders to sustain the rising level of compliance, which has resulted in reduced smuggling in the area.

    Olomu added that “ the strict monitoring of cargoes, constant profiling of port users, sensitization of stakeholders and in-house training, and retraining of customs officers have jointly contributed to the almost zero level of smuggling in recent times.

    He urged all port users in Apapa to avail themselves of the services of the dispute resolution team to resolve all areas of uncertainty while reassuring licensed customs agents, freight forwarders, importers, exporters and haulage operators of the command’s readiness to assist at all times.

    He thanked sister government agencies for their support and stated that the command will always leverage on its relationship with them to share intelligence against criminal elements, do joint examinations in line with extant standard operating procedures (SOPs) and promote compliance at all times.

    “Our revenue collection is good, and I know we can do better with more impressive results in the last quarter of 2024.

    “I want to thank our compliant stakeholders for their cooperation in supporting us to achieve this level of collection. Reduced smuggling activities is a testament to affirm the compliance we are celebrating, and I can say the best is yet to come. We are not losing guard. Our tempo of vigilance is airtight, which attests to our capacity to detect smuggling and make seizures.

    “As we do trade facilitation, our anti-smuggling activities are done side by side leveraging on our non-intrusive technology for cargo scanning and physical examination when necessary. Let me also state that these standards and procedures are strictly adhered to in all bonded terminals under our control, “Olomu said.

    Customs generates N126b from LFTZ, Kwara

    The Lagos Free Trade Zone of the Nigeria Customs Service says it generated N115 billion in revenue over the past six months. Its Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Olanrewaju Olumoh, disclosed this at a stakeholder engagement in the Free Trade Zone in Lagos, yesterday. He expressed optimism that the command would meet and surpass its annual target by the end of the year.

    “The initial revenue target given to the Free Trade Zone was N108.84 billion before it was reviewed to N136.05 billion for 2024. From January 2024 till date, the command has generated N41.3 billion from the Free Trade Zone, compared to N24.7 billion collected during the same period in 2023. This shows an increase of N16.6 billion, representing a 67per centt rise over 2023. For Lekki Port, an initial revenue target of N6.61 billion was reviewed to N8.26 billion. From January to date, N74.67 billion was generated as revenue from the port,” Olumoh said.

    Also,  the Kwara Command of the NCS also said it has generated N10, 027, 580,694.63 into the coffers of the federal government between January and May, 2024.

    The command added that in the period under review, that it made 21 seizures of different prohibited items with the  total duty paid value of N35, 416,140,00.

    The contraband and prohibited items seized by the Customs officers included 507 bags of foreign rice, one unit of used vehicles, 1,055 pieces of used tyres, 164 Jerry cans of petrol of 25 liters each, totalling 4,100 liters.

    The Customs Area Controller, Kwara Area Command, Comptroller Faith  Ojeifo made these disclosures yesterday in Ilorin while briefing newsmen on the activities of the command in the last six months.

    Olumoh explained the fundamental benefits of establishing Free Trade Zones to include attracting foreign investments, promoting technology transfer, and creating job opportunities.

    Stressing the importance of stakeholder collaboration in achieving these goals, he noted: “It is important to keep sensitising agents and zone operators on the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for Free Zones to enhance their compliance level and improve their capacity towards better service delivery.”

    The General Manager, Operations, Lekki Free Trade Zone, Mrs Oladunni Kareem, emphasised the need for operators to be aware of customs procedures to reduce the time of doing business.

    “We want trade facilitation and the Nigeria Customs Service is doing all it can towards that. Revenue collection for the government cannot be overemphasised; we have to operate side by side,” Kareem said.

    Kareem noted that trade facilitation would encourage investors and help introduce the free trade zone to other investors, thereby creating more jobs for the youth while assuring of continued collaboration with NCS to improve Nigeria’s trade environment.

    Ojeifo said:” I want inform you that from January-May, 2024 we collected and remitted a total sum of N10, 027, 580,694.63.

    A comparative review of the preceding year 2023 indicates that the command surpassed what was collected same period last year with N2,885,779,644.03 which represents 40.41%  increment.

    “Within the period under review, I rejig my operation teams which had led to 21 seizures of different prohibited items. These include 164 jerry cans of PMS of 25 liters each (4,100 liters). The total duty paid value is – N35, 416,140,00”

    Customs intercepts 61 PMS kegs, 177 sacks

    Amid the scarcity of petroleum products in the country, officers of the Nigeria Customs Service, Western Marine Command (WMC) have seized 177 sacks and 61 kegs of 25 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) along the Isalu Creek, Badagry Waterway enroute Benin Republic.

    The Area Controller, Comptroller Paul Bamisaiye, broke the news to reporters at the weekend at the Command’s headquarters, Ibafon, Apapa, Lagos. He said the feat was achieved based on reliable intelligence by a joint patrol team.

    He said: “About 2330 hours on Wednesday, May 8, 2024, while on joint patrol based on credible intelligence, we received the movement of two boats laden with what was suspected to be petroleum products concealed in sacks.

    “Upon receipt of the information, the team moved into Isalu Creek,2nd lead Badagry Waterway. A careful examination of the seizure at the Command Headquarters  177 sacks contained 12,500 litres with a total Duty Paid Value standing at N8,750,000.

     The smugglers’ actions, Bamisaiye added, violated sections 245 and 254 of the Nigeria Customs Service Act of 2023.

    “There’s a strong warning to the economic importance of this kind of seizure at a time of fuel scarcity cannot be over-emphasised.People are suffering due to artificial scarcity, but they are busy smuggling these products outside the country to make money. It’s either they stop this act, or we continue to arrest them. We have zero tolerance for this act,” he added.

    The Customs chief praised the officers for doing a good job.

    The Nigeria Customs Service men basketball team made it a podium finish at the just concluded second edition of the Armed Forces Police and Paramilitary Basketball Championship held at the Indoor Hall of the MKO Abiola international stadium, Abuja.

    The Border Men defeated the Federal Fire Service by 92-61 points with Lucky Aliyu joining the bronze medal side on the last day of the championship.

    Customs dominated the Firemen from jump-ball to the buzzer.

    Customs play-caller Mohammed Abba praised the players who mostly veterans for showing up in the Service debut in the championship.

    Coach Abba who was a former player applauded the Comptroller General Bashir Adewale Adeniyi for his mission to revive Sport in the Service.

    “I am pleased with the positive attitude of the players for the championship and other behalf I want to thank our CG for his immense support for sports in the Nigeria Customs,” he said.

    “I am very sure the CG will do needful when there is opportunity to recruit into the service because Customs is a well-structured organization and our CG being a sport man himself,  will not leave the sector out  during recruitment of personnel.”

    Customs urges importers to regularise import duty within 90 days

    The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has urged importers and vehicle owners to take advantage of the 90-day window by the Federal Government to regularise their import duty on specific categories of vehicles.

    This is coming on the heels of the cancellation of the 25% penalty on improperly imported vehicles. 

    NCS National Public Relations Officer, Chief Superintendent, Abdullahi Maiwada made this known in a statement at the weekend.

    He said: “Stakeholders, including vehicle owners, importers, and agents, are encouraged to seize this opportunity to regularise import duty payments within the designated 90-day timeframe.

    “The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), under the directives of the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, has initiated a 90-day window, effective from 4th March 2024 to 5th July 2024, for the regularisation of import duties on specific categories of vehicles.

    “To ease economic hardship and encourage compliance, the  Minister and Coordinating Minister of the Economy have approved the suspension of the 25% penalty previously imposed in addition to import duty on improperly imported vehicles.”

    Customs seizes imported N1bn fake drugs in Oyo

    The Oyo/Osun Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) said it has intercepted and seized smuggled fake drugs worth over N1billion along Bakatari area of Omi-Adio, Ibadan.

    The seized fake drugs, according to Customs, had a total Duty Paid Value (DPV ) of N1,739,000,000,000 only for the 2024 fiscal year.

    Speaking while addressing newsmen at the Command headquarters in Ibadan, the Area Controller of the Command, Ben Oramalugo said the Command has been an enforcement oriented Command that prioritised fight against smuggling in all its operations.

    According to him, NCS, through the area command, aimed to alleviate hardship been experienced as a result of some economic saboteurs in the country, adding that they had also successfully intercepted and seized contraband goods, including items that posed threats to economic stability and lives of the citizens in the country.

    He said: “For the period of 19th January to February, 2024, the command has intercepted and seized the following contraband goods, foreign parboiled rice 345 (50kg) bags, worth N24,218,000.00, Premium Motor Spirit, PMS, 344 (25 litres) kegs, worth N5,728,500.00, Indian Hemp, 4 wraps (4 Kilograms), worth N126, 000.00, Used tyres, 1309 pieces, worth N70, 140,000,00, used clothes and shoes, 45 sacks/, 8 sacks/9 sacks, bales, worth N32,400,000.00/N10, 320, 000,00.”

    “Fake Pharmaceuticals, Augumentin Tablet, (625mg), 7 sacks, worth N819,000,000,00, Ampiclox, 22 sacks, worth N440,000,000,00, Amoxylin Capsules, 24 sacks, worth N480,000,000,00, foreign wine, 34 cartons, 5 bottles, worth, N6,231,206,00, foreign vegetable oil, 40 bottles (5 litres), worth, N1,760,000,00, 21 bottles (1 litre), worth N99,225,00, totalling N1,890,022,931.00.”

    He reiterated commitment of the command towards fight against ongoing economic difficulties by supporting the Federal Government to enhance food security in the country.
