The Police in Cross River have arrested a staff of Cross River Ministry of Education for allegedly conspiring with others to steal a trailer load of text books worth millions of naira.
Mr Hafiz Inuwa, the State Commissioner of Police, told newsmen in Calabar that the text books belong to the Ministry of Education.
Inuwa said the suspect was arrested on the Ikom-Ogoja highway while heading to Lagos with the items for disposal.
He also said the suspect was arrested along side the truck driver and a Lagos-based businessman.
“The items included cartons of French, Christian Religious Knowledge, Physical Education, Welding and Technical drawing text books belonging to the state government,’’ Inuwa said.
He said that upon investigation, the police discovered a shady deal between some staff of the Ministry of Education and their accomplices to dispose off the materials without the approval of the state government.
A Minna Magistrates’ Court on Friday ordered the remand of a labourer, Samaila Bala, over alleged kidnap of a six-year-old boy.
Bala is standing trial on a three-count charge of conspiracy, theft and kidnapping.
The prosecutor, Insp. Abdullahi Maiyaki, had told the court that one Mr Shehu Abu reported the matter at the Sarkin Police Station on December 24, 2017.
Maiyaki said that the accused and two others, now at large, invaded Abu’s house, kidnapped his six- year-old son and absconded with him to an unknown destination.
He said that the suspected labourer and the others released the boy after 10 days in captivity.
The prosecutor said that the accused had previously stormed the complainant’s house and carted away two cows and four sheep.
President Donald Trump has questioned why the U.S. would want to have immigrants from Haiti and African nations, referring to some as “shithole countries,” according to two sources familiar with the comments.
Trump’s remarks, made in the White House, came as Democratic Senator Dick Durbin and Republican Senator Lindsey Graham briefed the president on a newly drafted immigration bill being touted by a bipartisan group of senators, according to the sources, who asked not to be identified.
Sources said government officials were present during the conversation.
The lawmakers were describing how certain immigration programs operate, including one to give safe haven in the United States to people from countries suffering from natural disasters or civil strife.
One of the sources who was briefed on the conversation said that Trump said, “Why do we want all these people from Africa here?
“They’re shithole countries … We should have more people from Norway.”
The second source familiar with the conversation, said Trump, who has vowed to clamp down on illegal immigration, also questioned the need for Haitians in the United States.
Many Democrats and some Republican lawmakers slammed the president for his remarks.
Republican U.S. Representative Mia Love, a daughter of Haitian immigrants, said the comments were “unkind, divisive, elitist, and fly in the face of our nation’s values”.
Love called on Trump to apologise to the American people and to the countries he denigrated.
Another Republican Representative, Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, who was born in Cuba and whose south Florida district includes many Haitian immigrants, said: “Language like that shouldn’t be heard in locker rooms and it shouldn’t be heard in the White House.”
Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal, a frequent Trump critic, said the president’s comment “smacks of blatant racism, the most odious and insidious racism masquerading poorly as immigration policy.”
In an apparent response to his critics, Trump took to Twitter late on Thursday night.
Trump tweeted: “The Democrats seem intent on having people and drugs pour into our country from the Southern Border, risking thousands of lives in the process.
“It is my duty to protect the lives and safety of all Americans. We must build a Great Wall, think Merit and end Lottery & Chain. USA!”
The programme that was being discussed at the White House is called Temporary Protected Status.
In November, the Trump administration decided to end the status for immigrants from Haiti and Nicaragua.
It gave the approximately 59,000 Haitian immigrants who had been granted the status until July 2019 to return home or legalise their presence in the U.S.
Nicaraguans were given until January 2019.
On Monday, Trump moved to end the status for immigrants from El Salvador, which could result in 200,000 Salvadorans legally in the United States being deported, beginning in September of 2019.
Uber and Careem, a Dubai-based ride-hailing app, is planning to hire no fewer than 10, 000 female drivers in Saudi Arabia by June 2018.
CNN reported that the companies have already launched training sessions targeting Saudi women who have already obtained driver’s licenses from abroad.
Female customers currently represent the majority of Uber’s rider base and its local counterpart, Careem, the report said.

U.S. President Donald Trump canceled a visit to London scheduled for early this year, saying he was disappointed with the “Obama administration having sold” the U.S. embassy in the British capital.
“(The) reason I canceled my trip to London is that I am not a big fan of the Obama Administration having sold perhaps the best located and finest embassy in London for “peanuts,” only to build a new one in an off location for 1.2 billion dollars,” Trump said in a tweet late on Thursday.
However, the embassy website showed that the decision to move the location was taken months before Barack Obama took office in January 2009.
The U.S. Embassy & Consulates in the UK said in October 2008 the embassy would be relocated for security reasons.

Mailafia in a lecture titled; “The Crisis of Leadership and World Order” tasked the leadership of the country on the need to ensure peace and harmony to accelerate nation’s development.
The former special adviser to the president on Economic and Policy Matters, said that killings in Middle Belt were taking on a genocidal proportion and might undermine national food security.
The economist and international development specialist, however, commended the present administration for the efforts made so far in addressing security challenge in the country
He noted that: “without peace and harmony, nothing good will come. But without justice, there can be no peace to speak of.
`We are encouraged by the enormous efforts our military, through the leadership of the current administration to break the back of the Boko Haram insurgency.
“However, there are still many more rivers to cross. We need to finish the job and build a framework for a just and lasting peace in the northeast and the rest of the country.”
According to him, there is the problem of the so-called marauding herdsmen who are waging a de facto war in the Middle Belt, which is the bread basket of our country.
“These killings are taking on a genocidal proportion, and if care is not taken, may not only undermine national food security but also, ultimately, the future of our federation.
“The task fall on our generation to re-imagine Nigeria as a land of peace, a land of justice, a land of progress…a land based on the precepts of democracy, the rule of law, enlightenment and civilized value.
“We need a coalition of Nigerians who believe in our manifest as the leader of our glorious continent,” he said.
Mailafia said Nigeria had a world historic destiny and manifest destiny of the leader of Africa and the black race as a whole.
According to him, country’s vocation is to build a first class technological industrial democracy and to safeguard the integrity and honour of the continent.

The former Nigeria Permanent Representative at the UN, urged Nigerians to be involved in politics as they are involved in all other sphere of their daily lives.

The Federal Government has explained the reason for its planned establishment of cattle colonies, saying it is a measure to quickly curb the incessant bloody clashes between farmers and herdsmen.
Chief Audu Ogbeh, the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, said this when Gov. Simon Lalong of Plateau visited him in Abuja.
Mr Tolu Makinde, the Director, Information, said this on Thursday in a statement by Mrs Oluwakemi Ogunmakinwa.
The minister noted that the policy would not transfer communal land ownership to herdsmen wherever it was established.
Ogbeh was reacting to fears by some citizens that the policy was an attempt by the Federal Government to forcibly collect land from citizens and hand them over to herdsmen.
He noted that there was no truth in speculations that the government was conspiring to grant supremacy over communal land to herdsmen.
The minister commended the Plateau Government for its interests in developing agriculture.
“Cattle colony is not using herdsmen to colonise any state. It is going to be done in partnership with state governments that will like to volunteer land for it.
“The Federal Government will fund the project and those wishing to benefit from it will pay some fees.
“While ranching is more of an individual venture for the herdsmen and those wishing to invest in the livestock sector, cattle colonies is a larger project where up to 40 ranchers can share same facility that will be provided by the government at a reduced rate.
“Already, 16 states have volunteered land,’’ he said.
The minister said the Federal Government would soon hold a stakeholders’ forum with the herdsmen and other stakeholders on the implementation of the new policy.
Earlier, Lalong said that he was at the ministry to understand the new policy.
He said that the state would key into the policy to maintain peace in the state.
“I happen to be one of the persons that keyed into the ranching policy when it was introduced.
‘‘We saw some lands in Plateau and we provided them for the implementation of the policy.
“The introduction of this policy is of interest to us, that is why we are always here.
“We also heard about the introduction of another one, that is the cattle colony and I said let me still come back again. We will also key into this policy,’’ he said.
Recall that Ogbeh had on January 8, disclosed the Federal Government’s plan to establish cattle colonies in the country.
Trading on the Nigerian Stock Exchange ( NSE ) on Thursday maintained a bullish run with the All-Share Index hitting all-time high of 43,041.54, while market capitalisation crossed over to N15.317 trillion.
The index rose by 1,225.43 points or 2.93 per cent to close higher at 43,041.54 against 41,816.11 recorded on Wednesday.
Similarly, the market capitalisation which opened at N14.880 trillion inched N437 billion or 2.94 per cent to close at N15.317 trillion following price growth in anticipation of 2017 audited results.
Mr Ambrose Omordion, the Chief Operating Officer, InvestData Ltd., attributed the market rally to investors’ anticipation of improved 2017 audited results that would start hitting the market very soon.
Omordion said investors were positioning in stocks with good fundamentals ahead of earnings release.
Seplat led the gainers’ table with a gain of N15.01 to close at N675.01 per share.
Nigerian Breweries came second with N6.68 to close at N152.68, while Guinness appreciated by N5.01 to close at N105.21 per share.
Dangote Cement also gained N5 to close at N252, while Okomu Oil Palm added N4.46 to close at N72.15 per share.
Conversely, Flour Mills recorded the highest price loss, declining by 40k to close at N33 per share.
Dangote Sugar Refinery trailed with a loss of 30k to close at N21.50, while Berger Paint dipped 25k to close at N9.10 per share.
Cadbury lost 20k to close at N16.80, while UPl declined by 13k to close at N2.63 per share.
Also, the volume of shares traded appreciated by 43.63 per cent with an exchange of 1.62 billion shares worth N17.38 billion transacted in 8,968 deals.
This was in contrast with 1.09 billion shares valued at N13.29 billion traded in 8,025 deals on Wednesday.
Transcorp was investors delight, accounting for 208.78 million shares worth N439.19 million.
Diamond Bank trailed an account of 149.70 million shares valued at N368. 33 million, while Zenith International Bank traded 129.43 million shares worth N4.40 billion.
FBN Holding traded 93.16 million shares valued at N1.06 billion, while Access Bank sold 89.46 million shares worth N1.08 billion.
