CHAN 2018: Eagles to face Libya, Rwanda, Equatorial Guinea

Nigeria’s Super Eagles will face 2014 champions Libya, as well as Rwanda and Equatorial Guinea, in the group stage of the 5th African Nations Championship (CHAN) in Morocco.

Rwanda were the last team to qualify for the 2018 finals, edging Ethiopia 3-2 on aggregate in a play-off after Egypt decided to forfeit its slot at the championship.

Equatorial Guinea qualified for the finals following Gabon’s withdrawal of Gabon.

Hosts Morocco, Guinea, Sudan and Mauritania have been drawn in Group A.

The Atlas Lions will be facing Mauritania in the competition’s opening match at the Mohamed V Stadium in Casablanca on Jan. 13.

  • Ensure smooth repatriation of stolen funds, FG tells countries involved

Ensure smooth repatriation of stolen funds, FG tells countries involved

The Federal Government ( FG ) through Vice President Prof. Yemi Osinbajo has called on member countries of the Financial Action Task Force on Money Laundering ( FATF )  to “ensure the smooth repatriation of proceeds of corruption to the economies from where they were stolen”.

Osinbajo made the call at the opening of the 18th Ministerial Committee Meeting of the Intergovernmental Action Group Against Money Laundering in West Africa in Abuja.

FATF is an inter-governmental body established in 1989 by the Ministers of its member jurisdictions and is a policy-making body.

The objectives of the FATF are to set standards and promote effective implementation of legal, regulatory and operational measures for combating money laundering, terrorist financing and other related threats to the integrity of the international financial system.

Osinbajo, therefore, said that it was pertinent for member countries of the FATF to regard the objectives of the task force and make easy the process of the repatriation of stolen funds.

“Despite numerous mutual legal assistance treaties and conventions, it is obvious that we are not making the sort of progress that we expect to see.

“It is unconscionable, in our view, to have stolen funds in a bank within the jurisdiction of an FATF country and to have to go through a rigorous obstacle force to retrieve the funds and even when such funds are to be returned, after several years, humiliating conditions are attached.

“It is the view of Nigeria that FATF countries must, as a matter of respect for the spirit of our collaboration and with the same efficiency and zero tolerance for quibbling, ensure the smooth repatriation of proceeds of corruption to the economies from where they were stolen.”

He, however, commended the efforts of several countries in facilitating the fight against corruption in the country and the sub-region, adding that such cooperation contributed to the fight against illicit financial crimes.

“We must commend the United Kingdom, Norway, Netherlands and Denmark for leading the way in establishing public registers of the real human owners of companies in their countries.

“We cannot have anonymous ownership of companies’ trust and other arrangements designed to cover the ownership of assets and at the same time expect optimal results from anti-money laundering measures.”

The vice president also called on G8 and G20 countries to initiate actions to “end corporate secrecy in some of their dependencies”.

  • Treat money laundering, with zero tolerance, Osinbajo advises W/Africa

Treat money laundering, with zero tolerance, Osinbajo advises W/Africa

The Federal Government on Saturday through Vice President Yemi Osinbajo called on countries in the West African sub-region to treat money laundering and other illicit financial crimes with zero tolerance.

Osinbajo made the call at the opening of the 18th Ministerial Committee Meeting of the Intergovernmental Action Group Against Money Laundering in West Africa in Abuja.

Osinbajo said that governments in the sub-region had “for long affirmed our commitment to fighting money laundering and terrorist financing”.

The vice president reiterated that criminal syndicates had utilised technologies to bypass “conventional financial systems checkpoints and safeguards”, making them “ahead of government and the law”.

He said that it was mandatory governments to take “lethal action” against illicit financial crimes to curb corruption and terrorism and also enhance development.

“What this means is that we are dealing with an existential threat; it is either we wipe it out or it wipes us out.

“This should spur us to treat money laundering and other financial crimes with zero tolerance; we must now back this intent with forceful action and visible results.

“While we acknowledge the steps we have taken individually and collectively in recent years, we cannot afford complacency at this time.

“It is actually the moment for us to redouble our efforts to show up the political will required to apply and implement the laws and framework that we have worked so hard to develop.

He further urge countries to enhance collaboration in the areas of information sharing and develop mutual trust for one another.

“This means that on the one hand we should rise above the temptations of secretiveness and mutual suspicion and on the other hand we must do everything in our power to sustain trust and confidence.

He said this could be done by safeguarding every piece of information being shared across national databases.

“We must also strive to work beyond barriers imposed by the differences in our various legal systems, bearing in mind that criminals that we are tackling have never allowed themselves to be held back by these obstacles.”

He also called for enhanced international collaboration to tackle the menace of illicit financial crimes in the sub-region.

  • Police distribute 2,500 leaflets on security tips, distress call numbers in Enugu

Police distribute 2,500 leaflets on security tips, distress call numbers in Enugu

The Enugu State Police Command, on Saturday, distributed over 2,500 leaflets with security tips, distress call numbers and social media addresses in Enugu.

    The command’s four distress call numbers are: 08032003702, 08075390883, 08086671202 and 08098880172.

Its social media platforms include: nigeriapoliceenugustatecommand for Face-book; @PoliceNG_enugu for Twitter handle and enugustatepolice@gmail.com, enugustatepolice@gmail.com for Email.

Speaking to our correspondent after the command’s monthly jogging and walking in Enugu, the Command’s Sports Officer, SP Ebere Amaraizu, said that the leaflets would enable residents to have an easy contact with the police.

He also said that this would allow residents to join law enforcement agents to participate actively in crime prevention.

Amaraizu said that the distribution of the leaflets was another measure that the command had designed to enhance pro-activeness by opening up avenues to get information and feedback from the people.

He, however, lauded other security personnel and staff of corporate bodies for the co-operation and synergy in carrying out the exercise.

Amaraizu, who is also the command’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), thanked a telecommunication company – MTN Nigeria – for sponsoring most activities in the three-hour exercise.

‘‘This month’s Jog-and-Walk exercise with the theme: “Jog/walk for Agility and Life,’’ has enable police to reach their numerous publics and residents of the state through security tip leaflets.

‘‘It has built comradeship between police and other sister security agencies as well as corporate organisations, which chief among them is MTN Nigeria that had sponsored activities carried out in the exercise,’’ he said.

Earlier, a Senior Security Manager with MTN Nigeria, Mr Chuks Ogbuehi, said ‘‘yes, we are seeing the benefits of partnering with the police and residents to create a peaceful environment for business and other human activities to strive in the state’’.

One of the participants, Mr Osita Egbo, said that the exercise had made him more agile and allowed him to burn some calories.

NAN reports that the participants, who walked and jogged over 12 kilometres, passed through Ridge Way, Okpara Avenue, Prisons Way, Camp Road, Zik Avenue and terminated at Agbani Road, all within Enugu.

The Command’s monthly Walk/Jog show commenced in January, 2013.

  • Plateau: Thugs disrupt PDP primaries in Kanke, beat up electoral officers

Plateau: Thugs disrupt PDP primaries in Kanke, beat up electoral officers

Thugs on Friday disrupted the PDP primary elections organised to decide its chairmanship candidate for Kanke, in the Feb. 18 local government elections in Plateau.

The thugs, who invaded the Kwall Stadium venue of the election, beat up members of the PDP electoral committee and officials of the party, and destroyed several cars.

Worst hit in the attack was one Anthony Joro, a member of the electoral committee, whose eared was mutilated.

Also hit was Mr Dauda Waptu, the PDP Chairman in Kanke Local Government, who sustained various injuries on his face.

The election, which began peacefully with delegates voting after accreditation, turned violent when it was Waptu’s turn to vote.

Trouble started when some of the delegates said he should not be allowed to vote because they did not recognise him as the party chairman, a position others vehemently rejected, insisting that he was the leader and must vote.

The argument later turned violent and the thugs, usually fenced off the voting centre, invaded the arena and attacked their targets.

Mr Tyopev Terna, Public Relations Officer of the Plateau Police Command, who confirmed the incident, said that the Police were already trailing the political thugs that disrupted the exercise.

“We have not arrested anyone, but we are investigating the matter; the thugs beat up many people and destroyed several cars. We shall not rest until they are fished out and dealt with,” he told NAN.

He advised politicians to adhere to the rule of the game, warning that anyone found culpable in the Kanke incident would not be spared.

Speaking on the incident, Waptu expressed surprise at the attack that disrupted the exercise.

“The list of delegates for the election was okayed by all members. I still do not see any reason why anyone will want to disrupt the exercise,” he said.

He accused an unnamed member of the House of Representatives of sponsoring the thugs, and described such attitude as “crude and primitive”.

Mr Benedict Shignuhul, PDP Vice Chairman in Plateau Central Senatorial District, expressed shock over the incident which he described as “very unfortunate uncalled for.’’

He blamed the incident on alleged mischief by a member of the House of Representatives “who appears bent on destroying the party that made him”.

“This same member abandoned the party immediately he won his election in 2015. His eyes are already focused on securing another tenure in 2019, but we have told him to first strengthen the party by uniting its members.

“He wants to control everything, but is not ready to contribute anything, except violence. We have always told him that politics is a game of give and take. We must protect mutual interests if we want to progress,” he said.

Contacted, Mr Tim Golu, who represents Kanke/Pankshin/Kanam in the House of Representatives, blamed the incident on alleged mischief by the party officials.

“The authentic list of delegates, whose election was witnessed and certified, was doctored by Mr Amos Gombi, PDP State Deputy Chairman, who is from Kanke, in a desperate effort to impose his crony,” he alleged.

Golu said that the party officials were warned of the impending danger, but insisted on conducting the primary election “even when they were told that the environment was not conducive”.

“Those who insisted that the primary election must hold should be arrested and held responsible for the unfortunate crisis.

“They changed the list of delegates three times and the people at the wards protested; even after the security operatives and some of us, who sensed danger, warned them, they insisted.

“This incident wouldn’t have happened if they had listened to us; now look at the level of damage and animosity it has created,” he fumed.

  • Anambra guber poll records impressive turnout

Anambra guber poll records impressive turnout

The Anambra governorship election has witnessed impressive turnout of voters at most of the polling units.

Correspondents who monitored the exercise on Saturday in the three senatorial zones of the state, report that voters were seen in most of the polling units visited as early as 7.30 a.m. waiting to be attended to by the electoral officials.

Security officials were present in all the polling units visited.

At Aguleri in Anambra East Local Government Area, the country home of Gov. Willie Obiano, the governor said he was happy with the massive turnout of voters.

Obiano urged the people yet to come out to do so, noting that effective participation by the people was the only way they could support the advancement of democracy.

The APC governorship candidate, Dr Tony Nwoye, also told newsmen that the turnout was high and impressive.

In Oyi, Orumba North and South, Awka South local government areas as well as Onitsha, our correspondents report that the turnout was high in the polling units visited.

However, the turnout in parts of Orumba north and south was poor because of late arrival of materials and officials of INEC.

At Aroma Junction, Agu Oka Polling Unit 004 in Awka South Local Government Area, Mr David Anyamele, a Local Election Observer, described the exercise as peaceful and smooth.

Anyamele, a member of Centre for Citizens with Disabilities, told NAN that he was impressed by the turnout of voters in most of the polling units he visited.

But at Fagge Area of Onitsha, the turnout was not very impressive.

Igwe Nneamaka Achebe, the Obi of Onitsha, said that the unimpressive turnout in Onitsha was because majority of people working and doing business in Onitsha were not residents of the area.

“Most of them live in Nkpor, Obosi, and Idemili areas, but only come to Onitsha to work and do business.

“The Obi in Council had earlier met and directed the town criers to go round the various communities and announce to the people to participate in the election,’’ Achebe said.

He described the conduct of the Nov.18 governorship election as smooth, peaceful and fair.

Meanwhile, a member of the Nigerian Bar Association ( NBA ) Election Working Group, in Onitsha said that the poll began on a good note.

The Coordinator of the group, Mr Adewale Ademola, said that the materials arrived and all the materials, including ballot boxes, card readers and results sheets were intact.

Ademola said the card readers were all in good working condition and that the election was smooth.

The Adamawa Government has paid N20 million counterpart fund for the implementation of the FADAMA III Second Additional Financing (AFII) programme to fast-track efforts to restore people’s livelihoods in the state.

Mr Mohammed Bello, the State Project Coordinator of FADAMA, made this known on Friday in Yola, while presenting a report to the FADAMA mission team led by Dr Ben Herbert.

Bello said that the FADAMA III (AFII) project, also known as North East Security and Livelihood Emergency Support Project, was initiated to respond to the food and livelihood needs of families who were hitherto displaced by the Boko Haram insurgency.

He noted that the feats recorded in the project encouraged the state government to pay the counterpart fund.

“The scope and scale up of Fadama III (AFII) project activities in the six northeastern states of Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Taraba, Bauchi and Gombe is aimed at enhancing the effectiveness of the project.

“Adamawa is one of the participating states and it is expected that over 4,000 households in the state would have been supported by the end of the project.

“FADAMA III (AFII) project covers all the 21 Local Government Areas of the state.

“From the 4,000 supported households, 2,240 persons were returnees and 1,760 persons were from the host communities, while the project also engaged 20 facilitators across the state,’’ he said.

He said that the FADAMA III (AFII) project had built the capacity of the beneficiaries and provided advisory services for them.

“With regard to crop production, 2,331 households were supported under the project, which also supported fisheries.

“The inputs distribution pattern showed that 12,950 kilogrammes of rice varieties like Faro 44 variety were distributed, while 207 hectares of rice farmlands were cultivated.

“Other crops that were distributed include maize, sorghum, groundnut and onion, while fertilisers, herbicides and insecticides, among other inputs, were also dispensed.
