FG denies export racketeering allegations against Amina Mohammed

The Nigerian Government has denied the allegations of wood export racketeering to China levelled against UN Deputy Secretary-General Ms Amina Mohammed.

The Minister of State for Environment, Mr Ibrahim Jibril, in a statement denied the allegations being widely circulated in the media against the ex-Minister of Environment.

The statement read: “The report which contained spurious and unsubstantiated allegations against the former Minister, is a pure misrepresentation of facts, baseless and intended to smear not just Mrs Mohammed, but the Nigerian Government.

“The Ministry of Environment wishes to state unequivocally that the ex-Minister is not under any probe whatsoever over any purported wrongdoing whether locally or internationally.

“The ex-minister acted within the ambit of the law of both the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the protocols of International Environmental conventions while in office between November 2015 to February 2017”.

The Nigerian Government noted for clarity the processes involved in issuing approvals for Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species in wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).

It said “potential exporters are required to apply to the Ministry” and for “inspection of factories and premises for compliance by wood experts”.

The statement said qualified exporters were issued ‘Letters of Supports’, with ‘Invitation of the Ministry by the exporter for the stuffing of the containers”.

The Ministry stated that all the CITES permits signed by the ex-minister were done in line with stringent guidance and procedures.

“Specifically, Rosewood (Kosso) is under CITES Appendix II, which allows Sustainable Trade to improve the livelihood of people in line with International best practices.

“For the records, the CITES permits signed by the ex-minister were in batches from August 2016 to January 2017.

“In line with established Public Service norms, the ex-minister continued to perform her duties diligently up to the last minute of her last day in office in Feb. 24, 2017.”

The ministry further stated that Mohammed, during her tenure as Minister of Environment, carried out far-reaching reforms in the environmental sector.

It cited that of bringing Rosewood from unguided trade of CITES Appendix III to Appendix II, which sanitised the wood industry in Nigeria.

It added that Mohammed “led the Review of Endangered Species Act, Convention on International Trade in Wild Fauna and Flora and duly signed by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, on Dec. 30, 2016.”

The Environmental Investigation Agency ( EIA ) had earlier claimed that the former Nigerian Minister might have benefited personally from signing thousands of allegedly backdated permits in January 2017 which were allegedly used to clear illegal rosewood exports to China.

EIA further claimed this happened at the time Mohammed was preparing to leave as Nigeria’s minister of environment following her UN appointment.

EIA’s report said over 1.4 million illegal rosewood logs from Nigeria worth $300 million were detained at the ports in China in 2016 but were released after the presentation of CITES certificates signed by the ex-minister.

FMARD to engage 2m youths, 997,500 women through LIFE programme – Report

The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development ( FMARD ) says it will engage 1.9 youths and 997,500 women through its Livelihood Improvement Family Enterprises ( LIFE ) programme.

This was disclosed in excerpts of a Book entitled: ‘‘Making steady, sustainable progress for Nigeria’s peace and prosperity: a mid-term scorecard on the President Muhammadu Buhari administration’’authored by the Presidential Media Team.

The book will be presented to the public on November 16 in Abuja.

LIFE is a programme aimed at bringing life back to rural communities through the empowerment of youths, women and other vulnerable groups across the country.

It stated that the programme design commenced in the past one year.

It is geared to promote community-based on-farm and off-farm business activities as a model for job and wealth creation among unemployed youths and women in rural and suburban households.

“Programmes under LIFE are expected to establish 150,000 cooperatives nationwide under commodity value chain groups, establish and operate up to 1,000 cottage industries in the country.

“It is also expected to ultimately engage 1,995,500 youths and 997,500 women for enhanced productivity and, through these interventions, add about 5,965,000 metric tonnes of foods to the national food store,’’ it said.

The report said the key challenge leading to the late take-off of the programme was related to the cumbersome procurement procedures.

It stated that the Anchor Borrowers Programme, driven by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in collaboration with FMARD, had provided substantial money for dry season farming in 2015, wet season rice and wheat farming in 2016.

According to the report, the programme is currently supporting 2016 dry season farming in many states.

“Anchor Borrowers Programme is an intervention aimed at fast-tracking access of rural farmers to finance for productivity.

“This entails provision of agricultural credit for financing the production of rice, wheat, ginger, maize and soybeans in nine states.’’

The states are Kebbi, Niger, Kaduna, Kano, Enugu, Benue, Zamfara, Anambra and Kwara.

“Through the programme for the out-growers in the past one year, massive harvest is expected to meet the national requirements of paddy and milled rice within the shortest possible time,’’ it stated.

The publication was edited by Femi Adesina, Special Adviser to the President, Media and Publicity; Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant to the President, Media and Publicity, and Laolu Akande, Senior Special Assistant to the President, Media and Publicity, ( Vice President’s Office).

The book is a documentation of the notable achievements of the Muhammadu Buhari-led All Progressives Party (APC) administration since it was inaugurated on May 29, 2015.

President Buhari wrote the foreword of the 348-page book, containing milestones of all the federal ministries and some select departments and agencies in the last two years.

The Buhari Media Support Group also contributed to the compendium rich with text and visuals.

The book will be reviewed by Prince Tony Momoh while APC National leader  Bola Tinubu is the keynote speaker/book Presenter.

  • The pretty, sexy king: The Story of Bobrisky

The pretty, sexy king: The Story of Bobrisky

Famed as Africa’s male Barbie, Idris Okuneye aka Bobrisky, never shies away from controversies. In spite of the criticisms against his personality, the 25-year- old beautician is resolute on living his life the way he wants, writes OLAITAN GANIU.

    Controversy over arrest by Police

Following the news of the ‘arrest’ of Nigerian internet personality and beautician, Idris Okuneye aka Bobrisky, for allegedly proclaiming himself as gay, the police have cleared him.

“I don’t know about the arrest, and the command did not arrest him,” the Lagos State Acting Commissioner of Police, Edgal Imohimi, said on Wednesday.

“He does not have any problem with the command. Ask him who arrested him.”

More so, the Police Public Relations Officer for Zone 2 Command, Onikan, Lagos, SP Dolapo Badmos, also denied the arrest of the cross-dresser.

She said, “I am not aware of the arrest. Maybe he was arrested somewhere else.”

On Tuesday, the internet was awash with stories of the arrest of the Nigerian Snapchat Queen by police officers attached to a Lekki police station for coming out as gay in an Instagram post.

“All these house boys and girls coming to drop comment on page are you all stupid?” Bobrisky wrote.

“Do you think your hate comments can change me? Why are you trying so hard to get my attention?… If all your insult bothered me, I should have stopped posting here. Yes am gay, I will go to hell fire. Thanks. Please what else? I’m tired of those same words. I wanna hear something new.”

Though he later deleted the post, the attention had begun because in previous interviews, Bobrisky, despite his effeminate ways of cross-dressing, wearing make-up, had always denied being gay. While the allegation of being gay had always hung over Bobrisky, some people thought it was strange that such could warrant the police to arrest him, given his controversial posture as a cross-dresser and skin bleaching cream agent. In fact, another report speculated that behind Bobrisky’s arrest is connected to a running battle with socialite Toyin Lawani, an allegation which Lawani’s crew have refuted. But Bobrisky does not believe it.

On Wednesday, Bobrisky accused Toyin Lawani of being behind his ordeal.

“Toyin Lawani asked her lawyer to write petitions against me claiming that I worked for her and I’m selling cream to all her customers,” he revealed to Linda Ikeji Blog. Lawani had allegedly called him a riff-raff during a social media rift.

“Which was a fat lie? I never worked for Toyin. She was my friend. I can’t remember ever working for Toyin or learning how to make cream from her.

“Then she also said I threatened her. So we are going to Abuja because that was where the case was reported. Before she wrote petitions against me, she had already threatened me that she is giving me 7 days to go to the internet and apologize to her which I said no way because she offended me. I think because I refused to apologize, she got the police involved.”

Bobrisky also said the police took his phones and was told he would need to wait until the next morning to go to Abuja. In 2016, police arrested Bobrisky for allegedly beating up a lady who allegedly took photos of him.

    His early days

While almost every human society throughout history followed norms and designated conventions of cultural behaviours including clothing for each genders or age, there exist some exceptions.  But who is exactly is this fair-complexioned Bobrisky, perhaps, Nigeria’s most famous cross-dresser who falls into such category.

Bobrisky who lost his mother in 2008 was born in 1992 in Ebutte Meta, Lagos into a Muslim family. And in interview conducted in 2016, Bobrisky said he coined his brand name by adding ‘risky’ to Bobo, the name his family called him as a child.

“I was born in a polygamous family,” said Bobrisky who attended Kings College, Lagos before attending University of Lagos, where he graduated from the department of accounting. He lost his mother

“My dad has three wives. My mom is the last wife and I, the last born of the family. My family use to call me Bobo while growing up. I was like, ‘let me add risky because I love to take risk.’ That’s why I came up with Bobrisky.”

    The skin-whitening business

AND in 2014, Bobrisky got trapped in his biggest risk, cross-dressing, due to peer pressure, he said. It would also take another risk – him being mocked for being dark in complexion – for Bobrisky to discover his now lucrative bleaching cream business.

“I went to Dubai with my friends (and) while gisting, a naughty friend just said, I’m too black that I need to bleach maybe to chocolate or tone up a little,” he said.

“I was like lemme try to tone up, but the cream made (me) to have scratches, dark spots and dark knuckles. I was like lemme kuku make everything blend since I have no choice.”

After Bobrisky turned from black to white, he abandoned his unisex shop at Ikeja, where he sold ladies’ wears and started selling the cream to his admirers.

“As a cream seller and make-up artiste, I put everything on, to advertise my product – bobrisky is not doing it lure men. People starting adding me on Snap and Instagram because of my makeup and bleaching cream. I sold my cream to other countries like Gambia, Zimbabwe, Canada, Austria and UK, the blog there are promoting my business on their blog.”

Since then, his brand of cream has attracted wealthy clientele and the Ijebu Igbo, Ogun State indigene, with his social media presence, has gradually become one of Nigeria’s most controversial internet personality. He also sells expensive skin-whitening reams which go for as much as 100, 000 naira as he writes about his ostentatious life on social media. He has also reportedly got invites to elite gigs and even made a debut as an actor in a movie, Ojuloge, with Tayo Sobola and Toyin Afolayan. And for a week last year, Bobrisky came out tops on Google search. Google’s Communications and Public Affairs Manager, Anglophone West Africa, Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade, in a statement disclosed that Bobrisky was most searched on the global search engine between October 26 and November 2, 2016.

“Top trending searches on Google this week went from a fashionable man with a different dress sense to a search for a chemistry, which is neither a subject nor love bond,” said Kola-Ogunlade.

“Bobrisky, ‘Africa’s Male Barbie’ became a search interest this week after a presidential aide pulled off from a new media conference, because he could not share the stage with the social media sensation.

“Bobrisky had earlier dominated Google search some months back, for cross-dressing, use of makeup and stories of highlife with a secret ‘bae’.”

The gay allegation and sexual harassment

APART from his sexy voice and mannerisms, dressings like a woman, Bobrisky recorded more followers, mostly males, on his Snapchat account when he claimed he has boyfriend, known as BAE. Though, he refused to reveal his mysterious friend’s gender, he would use ‘him’ when talking about his BAE. And in October 2016, Bobrisky posted a photo where he posed with N7 million which he received from his ‘BAE.’

“Many times, men have mistaken me for a woman because of my feminine looks,” Bobrisky said, denying being gay, despite ‘twerking and whining’ on social media.

“And they have tried to lure him to bed with money and have failed.”

Though Bobrisky said he is currently single after his girlfriend left him because he wore make-up, he plans to settle down and have a family.

“One day, we went out for a dinner and a white man was staring at me,” she said of how he and his girlfriend separated.

“She got notice and she broke up with me. Since then, I’ve been dating other women but I’m not ready to settle down.”

    Life in a homophobic society

IN Nigeria, involvement in same-sex relationships is punishable with 14 years’ imprisonment as prescribed by the Same Sex Marriage Prohibition Act (SSMPA) which became a law in 2013. However, arrests are infrequent as homosexuals live in hiding. Hence, it is ironic that the social media account of Bobrisky which tends toward homosexuality is very active. The two major religions practiced in the country – Christianity and Islam also frown against homosexual acts. While the bible in Deuteronomy 22:5 which reads ‘”A woman must not wear men’s clothing, nor a man wear women’s clothing, for the Lord your God detests anyone who does this,’ frowns against cross-dressing, Sharia law prescribes death for people found guilty of engaging in same-sex acts.

    Expert’s view on cross-dressing

A psychologist warns that cross-dressers may begin wearing clothing associated with the opposite sex in childhood, using the clothes of a sibling, parent, or friend. Some parents have said they allowed their children to cross-dress and, in many cases, the child stopped when they became older.

At 25, perhaps, it is not yet time for Bobrisky to change.

I will return party to people, if elected- Gbenga Daniel

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Chairmanship aspirant, Chief Gbenga Daniel, on Friday promised to bring back the party to the people, if elected at the Dec 9 convention.

Daniel spoke with newsmen in Jalingo while on a campaign tour.

He said that alienation of the people by taking away their power to make decisions was responsible for all the party’s woes.

“Our coming here physically to speak with our people one on one is something unique and part of what we are going to do to return this great party back to the people.

“The motto of the PDP is Power to the People, but over the years, it does appear that power has been taken off the grassroot, and that is the cause of our disaster in the last general election.

“ We are going round, restoring hope, talking to our people, sensitising and giving them the real situation that, now, power has come back to them,” the aspirant said.

Daniel expressed optimism that he would win the chairmanship election, having previously contested and won two governorship elections in Ogun State.

“ Most of my friends and colleagues competing were appointed officers; they did not contest and win elections, and I am sure that will be looked at when the time comes.

“But more than anything else, we have a good party with popularity nationwide, and we are ready to correct the mistakes of the past,” the aspirant said.

Daniel had earlier met with the State Deputy Governor, Alhaji Haruna Manu, and other government officials on his arrival.

Ondo Govt. tasks NPA on modern facilities

The Ondo State Government, has tasked the Nigeria Ports Authority ( NPA ) to provide modern facilities for its operations so that the 48-hour clearance target at the ports could come to a reality.

Mr Timehin Adelegbe, the Commissioner for Commerce, Industry and Cooperative Services, made this appeal on Friday in Akure at a one-day seminar, organised by the Nigerian Shippers Council.

The theme of the seminar was: “Economic Regulation: Facilitation of a New Port Order in Export and Import Trade.’’

Adelegbe said that the reduction of trade barriers must be accompanied by other policies and institutional reforms that would enhance investments in the local environment as well as growth in productivity.

The commissioner said that such a sustainable programme required a mutually-reinforcing policies geared towards the promotion of sustainable growth.

He enjoined the Federal Government to support the yearning of the State Government and its citizenry on the establishment of a seaport in the coastal area of the state.

According to him, the state is an agrarian society that supplies a reliable percentage of the Nigeria’s agricultural produce.

Adelegbe assured potential investors that the present Gov. Rotimi Akeredolu administration would continue to create the necessary enabling economic environment for investment.

He, therefore, urged the participants to examine all issues discussed with objectivity and come up with relevant recommendations that would assist the government and others interested in maritime trade.

“Ondo State will always play its roles effectively in rendering adequate support for all programmes that would assist in improving international trade to the state.

“For instance, in view of the importance of export and import trade to the development of our nation, Ondo State has put in place some structures to facilitate the ease of doing business,” he said.

He listed the measures to include: the ease of obtaining Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) for land acquisition and the establishment of the Ondo State Development and Investment Agency.

According to him, these measures are expected to guide investors and accelerate the pace of industrial development in the state.

  • $1.8bn oil debt: Court to hear FG’s suit against Omokore, Aluko Nov. 23

$1.8bn oil debt: Court to hear FG’s suit against Omokore, Aluko Nov. 23

A Federal High Court in Lagos will resume hearing of Federal Government’s suit seeking recovery of 1.8 billion dollars from two oil firms in Nigeria on Nov. 23.

The companies are Atlantic Energy Drilling Concepts Nig. Ltd, ( AEDC ) and Atlantic Energy Brass Development Ltd  ( AEBD ).

Joined as co-defendants in the suit are; Jide Omokore and Kolawole Aluko, Chairman and Director of the two companies, respectively.

The case, earlier slated for Friday was further adjourned till Nov. 23.

Although, the trial judge, Justice Oluremi Oguntoyinbo, had sat in the morning to deliver rulings, and entertain some matters, the court, however, rose, as she had to be away on official assignment.

In the suit, Omokore, Aluko and the two companies, are said to owe the Federal Government, approximately 1.8 billion dollars for crude oil lifted under a Strategic Alliance Agreements (SAT) between them.

The government had sometimes in 2016, alongside the Nigerian Petroleum Development Company Ltd (NPDC) and Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation ( NNPC ), dragged the defendants to court.

Government had urged the court to restrain the defendants and their agents from demanding or receiving payments from 19 commercial banks in Nigeria, eight offshore banks, and eight other companies listed before the court.

The applicants in an affidavit sworn to by one Mr Kehinde Oginni, averred that Omokore, Aluko and the two companies are indebted to government.

He averred that the defendants by virtue of the SAT agreement were granted licence to lift crude oil and other associated products in Nigeria for sale and for parties to share the profits in agreed terms.

He averred that the defendants lifted and sold the crude oil and have been paid, but deliberately, refused to pay the government, and unlawfully diverted the profits share of 1.8 billion dollars due to the government to their private use.

The deponent listed the diversions as follows:

“Several vehicles with combined value of over N800 million were purchased by the defendants and donated to the Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP ) through its National Chairman, Prince Secondus.

“Additional vehicles valued at over N130 million were purchased by the defendants and distributed to former Minister of Petroleum, Mrs Dieziani Alison-Maduekwe, and some other managerial staff of NPDC.”

He also stated that 18 million dollars and N1.1 million were paid to FBN Mortgages Ltd by Aluko as part payment for Block A, consisting of 26 Flats at 46 Gerrard Road Ikoyi Lagos purchased at a total cost of N5 billion

The deponent also stated that payment of 25 million dollars and N95 million were made to Real Bank for the purpose of part financing the acquisition of AEDC and AEBD companies’ property as well as renovation of some properties.

The deponent had consequently urged the court, to issue a Mareva Order, restraining the defendants from dissipating all known assets directly or indirectly, including but not limited to assets listed on the face of the motion paper before the court.

After hearing the submission of applicant’s counsel, Justice Oguntoyinbo had issued an order restraining the defendants and their agents from transacting with the assets of the defendants in banks, houses, land and shares in Nigeria and others located outside Nigeria.

The banks were ordered to sequestrate all monies and negotiable instruments standing to the credit of the defendants in the sum of 1.8 billion dollars, and keep same in an interest yielding account, pending the determination of the motion on notice.

The court had also ordered that the ruling should be served on the affected parties through advertisement in Newspapers circulating within and outside the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Meanwhile, the defendants had appealed the ruling and filed a motion seeking a stay of proceedings in the suit.

Apart from the pending application for stay, there is also a pending application filed by a Limited Liability Company, Virtual Properties and Investment Ltd as an intervener.

The intervener is urging the court to discharge or vary its order, as it relates to Marion Apartments, on the grounds that the property known as Marion Apartments consists of 56 apartments owned and developed by the intervener.

It added that by virtue of two separate deeds of sublease, the intervener conveyed its interest in 43 out of the 56 apartments to Realblanc Energy Engineering Ltd, an affiliate company of the defendants.

The intervener says it still retains ownership of 13 out of the 56 apartments in Marion Apartments.

It avers, therefore, that the order of the court is prejudicial to its interest, and interferes with its right of ownership over these flats.

Anambra election: Igbo leader urges full participation by residents

The Anambra State Indigenes Welfare Association, Kaduna Branch, has advised people of Anambra to go out en masse and vote the candidate of their choice in the Nov. 18 governorship election.

The President General, Chief Humphrey Okolie, gave the advice in an interview  in Kaduna on Friday.

“Let them not allow themselves to be deceived; on that day, let everybody go out and vote.

“Go and vote for the right candidate; don’t sell your vote; don’t vote by sentiment; don’t vote along party lines – whether party A or party B, but vote the person you believe can perform and deliver Anambra state.’’

The president general added that Anambra residents should vote during the election in order to avoid a vacuum of leadership.

“How can they say election will not hold? Election must hold.

“If they boycott election and the tenure of the incumbent governor elapses what happens?

“Does the state stay like that without a governor in a democracy?

“No state will function effectively without a substantive governor or administrator to see to the affairs of the state.’’

Similarly, the Biafra Nations Youth League leader, Princewill Obuka said the group had no plans to interfere in the exercise, “as we recognize the people’s right to vote or boycott”.
