    Fire guts Kachikwu’s residence

The private residence of Ibe Kachikwu, minster of state for petroleum resources,  located in Asokoro, Abuja caught fire on Sunday evening.

According to online sources, the fire is said to have  started in his bedroom as a result of a suspected electrical fault to the air conditioners.

“Kachikwu was not at home when it happened, but thankfully the fire service reacted quickly and put out the fire before things could go out of hand,”  our reporter gathered.

Details are scanty on the extent of damage to the house but we understand that nobody was hurt in the incident.

The minister has been in the news recently over his letter to President Muhammadu Buhari in which he complained about insubordination and humiliation by Maikanti Baru, the group managing director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation ( NNPC ).

  • Pope implicitly criticises U.S. for leaving Paris climate accord

Pope implicitly criticises U.S. for leaving Paris climate accord

Pope Francis on Monday implicitly criticised the United States for pulling out of the Paris agreement on climate change, praising it as a means to control the devastating effects of global warming.

The U.S. is the only country out of 195 signatories to have withdrawn from the accord, which aims to cut emissions blamed for the rise in temperatures.

President Donald Trump announced the decision in June shortly after visiting the pope, a strong supporter of the deal.

At the time a Vatican official said the move was a “slap in the face” for the pope and the Vatican.

“We see consequences of climate change every day,” the pope said in an address to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation ( FAO ) at its headquarters in Rome.

“Thanks to scientific knowledge, we know how we have to confront the problem and the international community has also worked out the legal methods, such as the Paris Accord, which sadly, some have abandoned,” he said.

Under the deal, United States had committed to reducing its own emissions by 26 to 28 percent, compared with 2005 levels, by 2025.

Many world leaders have criticised Trump for deciding to pull out.

In his Spanish-language address to the UN agency, Francis denounced “negligence toward the delicate equilibrium of the ecosystems, the presumption of manipulating and controlling the limited resources of the planet, and the greed for profit.”

Agriculture ministers and diplomats from the Group of Seven (G7) world power nations attended the gathering, which marked FAO’s World Food Day.

“We can’t be satisfied by saying ‘someone else will do it,’” the Pontiff said.

Ending local conflicts and curbing the effects of climate change were two of the “prerequisites” for dealing with world food security, Francis also said.

“The yoke of poverty caused by the often tragic movement of migrants can be removed by prevention, consisting of development projects that create jobs and offer the capacity to respond to climactic and environmental changes,” he said.

  • The other side of social media

The other side of social media

Social media is one of the best things to have happened to this generation since sliced bread. Come to think of it, it has made communication and interaction easier and more convenient.

By definition, social media is a computer mediated technology that facilitates the creation and sharing of information, ideas, career, interest and other forms of expression.

It is growing rapidly and becoming a vital part of our everyday life.

Our culture, norms and values are integral parts of who we are (our identity), what we feel connected to and how we behave.

Social media plays a big role in our social interactions. We no longer need to be with our important others physically before we know what they are doing; all we need to do is connect to them on twitter or Facebook.

Social media has become a prominent feature of life, especially among young people today.

There is an undue pressure on young people financially, socially, psychologically and otherwise when they consistently compare themselves to others on social media platforms.

This creates a feeling of inferiority complex among them. It is a major distraction to achieving their sets goals because it most times competes for their time and resources.

Social media sometimes exposes us to avoidable threats and vices like addiction (drugs), violence, abuse, kidnap, assassination etc.

Have you consciously sat down to analyse and estimate the total time you spend on social media?

Social media affects our habits and decisions; to a reasonable extent, it operates on our subconscious because our minds have been filled with images of other people and we begin to feel pressure to outdo or be like them.

Also, it has almost eroded our educational culture of spelling right and correctly because abbreviations have taken centre stage. Students can hardly make simple phrases like “…You’re welcome”, “…talk to you later”, “…happy birthday”, instead they would rather use these: “Ywc or U wlc”, “ttyl”, and “hbd” respectively.

Young people have literally embraced bestial and decadent tendencies when they post photo of themselves or others under the influence of alcohol, wearing something revealing  body or even naked in other to get more ‘likes’ and flirty ‘comment’ calling themselves different names like *BITCH*

A lot of relationships have hit the brick wall as a result of being seen in a compromising situation on social media.

If you are not very disciplined, social media will distract you from the very important things in life – family, religion, school etc.

In conclusion, people can only be affected by a thing if they allow it to affect them. Social media can influence our lives either for better or worse. It all comes down to the type of person you are.

If you are a person who is easily swayed by all tom, dick and harry, then keep off.  We need to pay attention to our own life, we need not to be competitive and just enjoy the moment instead of showing off. We shouldn’t turn ourselves to social media ADDICT.

Sharapova eyes strong finish to season after Tianjin title

Maria Sharapova is looking for a strong finish to a season that began with a doping ban and hit a high in China on Sunday when she won her first title in two years.

The former world no. one, who returned from the 15-month ban in April, defeated Belarusian teenager, Aryna Sabalenka 7-5 7-6(8) in the final of the Tianjin Open on Sunday.

Sharapova said she was looking forward to building on the success next week in Moscow at the Kremlin Cup, a tournament she has not appeared at since 2007.

“Obviously coming there with the title already means a lot, but I do really want to finish strong,” said the Russian, who accepted a wild card for the event.

“I don’t remember the last time that I played three events in a row. But I will give it everything I have got and I know I have so many amazing fans there.”

The five-time grand slam champion said the Tianjin title, the 36th of her career, was special.

“It has been a couple of years since I have held the winner’s trophy. It is a great feeling,” she said.

“When you start all the way from the beginning of the tournament and then you end up playing the final in a full stadium, with so much enthusiasm and energy.

“And you are the one that wins the last point, just everything falls into place.

“You have to appreciate those moments, never take them for granted.”

Sharapova takes on Slovakia’s Magdalena Rybarikova in the opening round in Moscow.

EU foreign ministers signal steadfast support for Iran nuclear deal

Several Foreign Ministers of the European Union ( EU ) on Monday signalled their resolve to keep the Iran nuclear deal intact after U.S. President Donald Trump cast doubt on U.S. support for the deal.

“The EU does not see any alternatives to the existing deal,’’ foreign ministers said at the sidelines of a meeting in Luxembourg, after Trump refused to certify the deal on Friday, throwing continued U.S. support for it into question.

However, EU foreign policy Chief Federica Mogherini has said she is not considering alternatives.

“I’m not considering alternatives, we do not expect the deal to be finished, we expect the deal to be preserved, continued to be implemented by all sides.

“This is a strong European Union( EU ) commitment,’’ Mogherini said.

While Trump’s announcement does not mean that the U.S. has withdrawn from the agreement, it is now up to the U.S. Congress to decide if sanctions on Iran will be reintroduced, which would put the deal at risk.

“We believe that it is wrong to destroy the agreement,’’ German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel noted.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian warned that “an act of rupture would be extremely damaging.”

He noted, however, that there were issues that remained to be discussed with Iran such as its ballistic programme and the way the country behaves in regional issues.

Open defecation: Yobe constructs over 200 public toilets

The Yobe Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency ( RUWASSA ) says it has constructed more than  200 toilets at Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camps and other public places to curtail open defecation.

The General Manager of  the agency,  Alhaji Mohammed Bukar, disclosed this in an interview on Monday in Damaturu.

Bukar said the agency had also launched a campaign on hand washing, water safety and waste disposal to create awareness on public health and combat open defecation.

He said the toilets were constructed at Pompomari, Kukareta, Kasaisa and Muhammadu Gombe farm IDPs camps, schools and motor parks, among others.

According to the general  manager, water facilities were also provided for effective waste management and to support hand washing and personal hygiene.

He said the agency also  ensured regular evacuation of the toilets in the public institutions to ensure that the facilities were always “functional and  serviceable”.

“We have a time-table for periodic dislodgment of the toilets and maintenance of the water facilities to maintain efficiency and safety.

“Our target is to create awareness on effective use of the facilities provided in IDPs camps, schools, markets and motor parks to check outbreak of diseases.

“The State Government and international donors have also constructed 20 new water facilities and rehabilitated 200 others in communities where the people have returned home,” he said.

Bukar said with more funding and support from donor agencies, the facilities would be extended to other communities to effectively curb open defecation, improve sanitation and waste management.

He said this would “put the state of public health on a higher scale in Yobe”.
