  • Does Showbiz Mean Show Off?

Players and followers of the entertainment industry in the country in recent time have expressed divergent views over the extravagant lifestyles of new generation actors especially the females folks who flaunt their wealth, status, properties on the internet. For many followers of the industry, the practice is childish and condemnable but to some others, the display of wealth and opulence by the artistes is the hallmark of the industry.

Veteran Yoruba actress, Mrs. Idowu Phillips, fondly known as Iya Rainbow, has this to say concerning this attitude among the young ladies.

“It is those who are not wise that are showing their wealth on the internet,” the octogenarian said.

“How can you be showing off  that you have N15million when you don’t have N5 million? Those who are still exposing their bodies, we are still talking to them at locations because I dislike it. I don’t want them to go astray. God said that we should cover our body. Why do you have to expose yourself?

She continued: “Lack of role models and masters is another issue. In the past, we had masters who trained upcoming actors and actresses. But now, someone with money will just come, without enough training. That is one of those things killing the industry.”

Popular actor, Dele Odule, in an interview offered that the industry needs to be sanitized.

Odule shot into limelight after starring in an award-winning Yoruba movie titled, Ti Oluwa Ni Ile argued that if there was a standard, many of those people who are always flaunting material things on social media wouldn’t be in the industry.

“You would see many actresses dancing around on social media. Even when they get pregnant, they flaunt it. Buying a car shouldn’t be a big deal but they make it seem as if it is. What is the essence of going on social media to flaunt cars and other items?” He asked rhetorically, adding: “A well trained actor will never run after material wealth. I am not saying that acting cannot open doors, it actually does. But those following this trend are passing a wrong message to the young ones out there and that will have a warped impression of the industry.”

Versatile Nollywood actress, Ronke Ojo popularly known as Ronke Oshodi-Oke opined that celebrities can seek attention of the public for various reasons but frowned at pretension.

The well-endowed actress urged her colleagues to act maturely rather than bragging with their cars and wealth.

“You bought a car, you put it on social media. Even those that are not up to 40 years are now lying on social media that they are 40. You bought a house you put it on social media. Why?” she posted on her Instagram.

“Before you show off, first look at the condition of your home. Have you ever seen a banker flaunting his or her car on social media? Why are we doing all that? Actor Odunlade Adekola bought a Range Rover and nobody knew anything since he has brain and is wise. This one bought a car, it’s on social media, that one bought something, it’s on social media. Is social media our life?”

For popular comedian, AY Makun, it is important for celebs to exhibit their wealth.

AY, took to his Instagram handle to educate those who criticize entertainers, he pointed out that it is important for celebrities to always be trending subjects, in order to remain relevant.

“Why would some people come out of Big Brother Nigeria and suddenly become relevant? It’s all because in show business you must have something to show before the business would come,” the comedian turned filmmaker claimed.

“If we are going to be honest with ourselves, we should admit that some of us go into show business wanting people to talk about us, wanting everyone to know who we are and the things we can do. But that also does not take away the fact that there are a whole bunch of people who will still not like us, no matter how we try.”

Reacting to a fan’s comment on why rich men don’t show off their wealth on the internet, the award-winning comedian said: “The likes of Dangote won’t flaunt their wealth because they are not into the business of showbiz which is essential to make people relax and laugh.”

During a conversation with the host of ‘Your View’ on TVC recently, beautiful Nollywood actress, Sotayo Sobola popularly known as Sotayo, who owns a multi-million naira production studio, exotic cars including Mercedes Benz G-wagon and a Range Rover E-vogue, clarified that she didn’t get her chattels to oppress anyone.

“I just live my life. I don’t do things because I want to impress anybody,” the 33-year-old light-skinned actress said.

“Let me be honest with you, it is not acting but my businesses that pay my bills. I think people should not be deceived that being an actor is lucrative. Like I always advise upcoming actors, ‘don’t say you want to become an actor just because you want to buy cars or houses’. Though, acting will pave ways for you to get to some places and meet prominent people and if you’re there, just try to use the opportunity to market your business and some other things that you are into and make money.”

Sobola then disclosed the secret of her wealth is her mother.

“My mum is one person that gives me millions,” the tattooed actress said.

“She doesn’t even ask me what I want to use money the for. She will just give me money. I am not saying that she gave me everything that I have but she is one of my backbones. I’m sure you have somebody, somewhere that helps you.

“Everybody has one or two people that help them. If you are pumping money into something that is not bringing money and it is not making sense, it  is like you keep pouring water into a basket. As for me, I get little money from acting and producing but not as profitable as it looks. Some people look at me and say, ‘where did she see money, is it from the movie she was acting?’ and that is the truth, it’s not from the movie except I want to deceive myself.”

  • CaddyTunes fears losing voice, inspiration

Singer Babatunde Raji, aka CaddyTunes, has listed ‘losing his voice’ among his greatest fears as an artiste.

“Losing my voice, losing the love of my fans, running out of inspiration to do great music, and being tone deaf are my greatest fears,” he said.

Revealing how he made his latest single, ‘Cancel Poverty’, the singer said: “My inspiration comes from every angle, at anytime and any season. On a particular day, I was having a meeting with my record label boss when I heard the beat. Immediately, I started humming a chorus to go along with it. I then got the beat from the producer, wrote the verses and the rest, as they say, is history.”

And speaking on the time lag between his last work, CaddyTunes said: “I always say that it’s not just about ‘dropping’ songs every now and then. I have well over 2,000 songs already written. For me, it’s more about structure and timing. I like getting quality results; so yes, this is the time to bring the heat.”

He further disclosed that being signed to his current record label, High Prince Records, is one of the best things that has happened to his career.

“I am currently signed to an international label called, High Prince Records, owned by my amiable boss, Prince Abayomi Balogun, aka Daddy Vic,” he said.

“The record label has been my home ever since I came on board. It has been more than a blessing working side by side with my boss who I regard as a brother, friend, and mentor.”

  • Wike seeks creation of state police

Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike has called for the establishment of state police to fight insecurity in the country.

Wike spoke on Wednesday when the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Human Rights, Ms. Agnes Callamard, visited him at the Government House in Port Harcourt.

According to him, the creation of state police would help to resolve the current insecurity bedevilling the country. He stressed that the present security structure makes it difficult for the Federal Police to respond quickly to security challenges.

He said: “We believe that there should be state police for us to effectively fight crime in the country. Our system is fashioned towards the United States, which has Federal, State and Local Police. Each of them has their responsibilities. In the present situation, if a crime is committed, the Commissioner of Police will first report to the Inspector General of Police, before taking any action.”

Wike told the delegation that the government established the Neighbourhood Safety Corps Agency to support security agencies with information, but the agency was frustrated for political reasons.

“We established the Neighbourhood Safety Corps Agency which would have helped the security agencies with information, but it was politicised by the Federal Government when they sent the Army to ensure that it did not come to fruition.

“If the Neighbourhood Safety Corps Agency was allowed, probably we would have solved part of the security problems,” he added.

Governor Wike reiterated that if the amended Electoral Act had been assented to by the President, electoral violence would have been reduced to the barest minimum, as there wouldn’t have been any incentive to snatch materials and manipulate the electoral process.

He berated the Army for perpetuating violence during the 2019 elections, saying the negative action of the Army was such that several embassies were shocked.

Ms. Callamard said she is interested in documenting the nature and extent of killings by state and non-state actors. “I am interested on how the Federal and state governments respond to the challenges of violence by state and non-state actors. I would be grateful if you will share with us, information on killings by the state and non-state actors,” she said.

  • We shut Benin border over rice smuggling, says Buhari

Massive smuggling of rice across the western border is responsible for its partial closure, President Muhammadu Buhari said on Wednesday.

The President added that he would meet with presidents of neighbouring Benin and Niger on how to stop smuggling.

The closure is also to allow Nigeria’s security forces develop a strategy on how to halt the dangerous trend with its negative impact on the government’s economic programme.

This was the first time the reason for the closure of the Seme border near Badagry in Lagos State, was given since the commencement of exercise, ‘Ex-Swift Response, jointly conducted by the Customs, Immigration, police and military personnel and coordinated by the Office of the National Security Adviser. It is meant to last 28 days.

The partial closure is simultaneously ongoing in Nigeria’s border in three other geo-political zones.

President Buhari gave the reasons during an audience with Beninois leader Patrice Talon on the margins of the Seventh Tokyo International Conference for African Development (TICAD7), in Yokohama, Japan.

President’s spokesman Femi Adesina, in a statement said President Buhari expressed great concern over rice smuggling.

The president said the activities of the smugglers threatened the self-sufficiency already attained due to his administration’s agricultural policies.

“Now that our people in the rural areas are going back to their farms, and the country has saved huge sums of money which would otherwise have been expended on importing rice using our scarce foreign reserves.

“We cannot allow smuggling of the product at such alarming proportions to continue,” he said.

Responding to the concerns raised by President Talon on the magnitude of suffering caused by the closure, President Buhari said he had taken note and would reconsider reopening it in the not too distant future.

He explained that a meeting with his counterparts from Benin and Niger Republics would soon be called to determine strict and comprehensive measures to curtail the level of smuggling across their borders.

The volume of rice import from Thailand in 2015 by Nigeria was 1.8 metric tons.

It came down to zero metric tons in 2017 when the Federal Government banned the importation of the staple food item to boost local production.

The action triggered a phenomenal rise in the importation of the product in neighbouring Benin Republic and Cameroon.

As a result of the smuggling and acts of sabotage by some unpatriotic elements within the security agencies, the tons of rice imported by the neighbouring countries found their way into local markets in Nigeria.

The development is threatening the gains achieved by the Buhari administration in local rice production.

To promote the consumption of locally-produced food items, the President recently ordered the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to block importers of food items from accessing any of the government windows for foreign exchange (forex).

President Talon said he called on the Nigerian President as a result of the severe impact the closure of the Nigerian border was having on his people.
