  • Agbaje’s attack on Bode George unacceptable — PDP

The Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Thursday urged Mr Jimi Agbaje, its governorship candidate in the last election, to show respect for the party leadership or face sanction.

The state chairman of the party, Dr Adegbola Dominic, gave the warning while speaking with newsmen in Lagos.

The News Agency of Nigeria(NAN) reports that he was reacting to a statement made by Agbaje on Wednesday, in which he launched verbal attacks on George.

Agbaje had accused George of being behind the rumour that he had dumped the PDP for the All Progressives Congress(APC), describing the claim as fiction.

Agbaje said that he was still a member of PDP and asked George to leave the party if he lacked any value to add.

”People should please tell Bode George to shut up and leave the PDP if he lacks any value to add to the party.

”He should leave the party instead of being a dog in the manger hampering the progress of the party in Lagos.

”The false narrative (that he has dumped PDP)is a product of his sick mind, or how else do you describe someone who just sits down to concoct fiction and market it as a reality”, he had said.

Dominic said the party was shocked at Agbaje’s statements against Bode George, describing it as ”most unfortunate”

He said the party had expected Agbaje to show respect for the leadership of the party as well as elders.

Dominic said the party would not condone acts of indiscipline from anyone, or verbal attacks on people he said had laboured to build the party in the state.

”We are shocked that Agbaje could make these statements against Chief Bode George; we are really shocked.

”What he has said is not expected of him, the statements are disgusting and unfortunate. We will not condone this act of indiscipline,” he said.

Dominic blamed Agbaje for the electoral misfortunes of the party in the last elections, saying he worked at cross purposes with party members.

He alleged that Agbaje spent all the campaign funds on his own without consulting with the party leadership or elders.

The chairman said decision of Agbaje to ”personalise”the funds ensured party members were denied the necessary resources to prosecute the party’s plan for the elections.

The Chairman said it was George and others who spent their personal resources to achieve the little results the party recorded at the polls.

Dominic described Agbaje as an unfaithful party man who used the party’s ticket to realise his personal ambitions.

He said party members had lost absolute confidence in him, and he would never get any iota of the party’s support in the future.

Earlier, Special Adviser to George on Political Matters, Mr Uthman Shodipe, described Agbaje’s statements against his principal as disgusting and disgraceful.

He said it was unexpected of Agbaje to have used such a ”crude language”on George especially as he is from Yorubaland where respect for elders is the norm.

Shodipe said that George nurtured Agbaje’s political career in PDP, and his statements were not only disrespectful but portrayed him as ”an ingrate”.

”Agbaje’s response was sickening for a Yoruba person, very disgraceful and unacceptable.

”As Omoluabis in Yorubaland, we do not throw stones at elders, what Agbaje has done is basically to throw sledge hammer at his benefactor by referring to him as a sick mind,” he said.

He said Agbaje’s grouse with George was that he expected him (George) to do more than he gave himself as candidate during the last governorship polls .

Shodipe said Agbaje decided to work entirely on his own during the elections and George could not have forced himself on him.

On Agbaje’s claim that George was behind the rumour that he had left PDP, Shodipe dismissed the claim.

He said George said Agbaje was not showing he still belonged to the PDP based on what he called his inconsistency.

Shodipe described Agbaje as a threat to the progress of the party in the state and the South West, saying he once contested against George for PDP National Chairmanship to deny Lagos and the region the seat.

  • Updated: Ganduje queries Emir Sanusi, demands response within 24 hrs

Kano State Governor Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje on Thursday queried Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II over allegations of fund misappropriation.

The Kano State Anti-Corruption and Public Complaint Commission on Monday indicted the Emir and recommended his suspension.

The Chief of Staff to the Emir, Munir Sanusi, who confirmed the receipt of the query, said the state government sought response of Sanusi within 24 hours regarding allegations of misappropriation of funds.

“We received the query today (Thursday). The state government has demanded the response of His Highness within 24 hours. The council is studying the content,” he said.
It was learnt the query was issued to give the Emir benefit of fair hearing and respond to allegations against him by the anti corruption commission bothering on N3.4bn misappropriation.

A preliminary report submitted last Monday by the Kano anti-graft commission recommended Sanusi should be suspended to allow proper investigation of allegation of financial mismanagement.

According to sources, the query emanated from the office of the Secretary to the State Government (SSG).

The alleged amount was said to have been misappropriated between 2014 and 2017.

The anti corruption interim report raised four cardinal issues bordering on indictments, amount involved, obstruction of investigation and recommendations.

The report indicated the Kano Emirate Council had spent over N1.4 billion in various expenditures believed to be fraudulent and unappropriated.

In addition, the Emirate Council was alleged to have spent over N1.9 billion unappropriated on seemingly personal expenditures, making the total sum of the questionable expenditures.

According to the report, the expenditures contravened the provisions of Section 120 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) and Section 8 of the Kano State Emirate Council Special Fund Law 2004.

Similarly, the expenditures had also violated Section 314 of Penal Code as well as provisions of Section 26 of the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission Law 2008 (as amended).

“It is also the opinion of this Commission, based on the available evidence, that Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II continued to undermine the investigation through various means which include giving instruction to all officers invited for clarification to shun the commission’s invitation.

“The act is seriously affecting the process of our statutory responsibility and offends the provisions of Section 25 of the Commission’s enabling Law 2008 (as amended),” the report said.

“The report, therefore, recommended that the principal suspect in the person of Muhammadu Sanusi II and all other suspects connected with the case be suspended, pending the final outcome of the investigations.

“This is a necessary administrative disciplinary action aimed at preventing the suspects from further interfering with the commission’s investigations.

“The commission further recommends that the contract awarded to Tri-C Nigeria Limited for renovation of Babban Daki, Kofar Kudu and Gidan Sarki Dorayi should be revoked as the company belongs to one of the suspects in person of Alhaji Mannir Sanusi, (The Chief of Staff in the Emirate),” it said.

According to the report, the company failed to settle the sub-contractor, Cardinal Architecture Ltd, after being duly paid.

It further recommended that appropriate authority should be put in place to oversee affairs of the Emirate Council in line with established statutes and policies, pending the final outcome of the commission’s investigations.

It also recommended further legal action should be taken against all the suspects as soon as the final outcome of the investigations were concluded and legal advice.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the current Assembly’s tenure would expire next week.

The incoming Assembly has 14 PDP lawmakers while APC has 16.

The Majority Leader called on the House to dissolve into Committee of the Whole for the screening of the nominees.

The Deputy Speaker, Alhaji Abubakar Magaji, who presided at plenary, announced the confirmation of the nominees through unanimous votes.

He further disclosed that the House received another letter from the governor containing a list of 40 persons to be appointed as Special Advisers.

  • Alleged N20m fraud: Court grants former Ikeja NBA chiefs bail

An Ikeja Special Offences Court Thursday granted bail to three former executives of the Ikeja Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), alleged to have defrauded the association of N20.1 million.

Justice Mojisola Dada, while ruling on their bail applications, granted former chairmen, Adesina Ogunlana and Yinka Farounbi and former treasurer Aderinola Kappo bail in the sum of N500, 000 each with two sureties in like sum.

They are first, second and third defendants respectively in the suit filed against them by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for alleged “conspiracy to steal”.

The judge held that there was no reason to deny the defendants bail as the EFCC failed to provide proof that they would jump bail or tamper with evidences and witnesses.

She said: “The allegation that the three defendants jumped administrative bail was not proven; although the first and third defendants said they were not around last Friday that they were supposed to appear before the EFCC.

“They, however, presented themselves for arraignment the following Monday, despite not being served by the EFCC,” she noted.

The judge also held that the EFCC investigated the claims of the third defendant that she was in a hospital in Badagry on that Friday.

“The EFCC also failed to produce the second defendant in court for arraignment, despite being in EFCC custody up until then.

“The defendants are granted bail in the sum of N500, 000 and two sureties in like sum, one of whom must own a landed property within the jurisdiction of the court.

“The defendants shall remain on temporary bail, pending the perfection of their bail within two weeks, failure of which they will be remanded in prison.”

Justice Dada adjourned the case until July 3, 9 and 10 for trial.

Ogunlana is facing a 15-counts of stealing and a count of money laundering while Farounbi and Kappo are jointly charged with 13-counts of stealing.

They, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

  • Nurse gets life sentence for killing 85 patients

Serial killer, Niels Hoegel, was on Thursday sentenced to life imprisonment after a German court found him guilty of the murder of 85 patients while working as a hospital nurse.

Hoegel, 42, had admitted to killing patients with lethal injections and was already serving a life sentence after being found guilty in 2015 of murdering two people.

It seemed to me that I was death’s bookkeeper,’’ presiding Judge, Sebastian Buehrmann, said as he read out the judgment.

Hoegel initially selected his victims carefully in hospitals in the cities of Oldenburg and Delmenhorst in north-western Germany, injecting them with medication that led to heart failure or other complications between 2000 and 2005.

But his killings later became random.

Prosecutors claimed he did this so he could try to resuscitate them, motivated by boredom or a desire to impress his colleagues with his medical skills.

Noting the seriousness of the case, the court virtually ruled out release from prison after 15 years, as is usual practice in Germany.

The charge sheet originally listed 100 murders, of which Hoegel admitted 43.

He was acquitted in 15 cases.

Referring to these cases, Buehrmann said of the relatives: “we leave you with doubts that are surely painful for you, but we have at this point to disappoint you.’’

Frank Brinkers lost his father, but is one of those who remained in uncertainty.

“This is very, very bitter. I’ve been through hell, and it’s difficult to bear.’’

Brinkers had hoped for final clarity, but “apparently it was not to be,’’ he said after the case was concluded.

The verdict marked the climax of a seven-month trial that drew global attention, in what is thought to be the worst serial murder case in post-war Germany.

According to a psychological report submitted to the court in April, Hoegel showed signs of a disturbed personality, including a lack of shame, guilt, regret and empathy.

“His patients’ condition would suddenly deteriorate; alarms would go off and Hoegel was the first at the bedside to initiate life-saving treatment.

“And, he was good at it and seemed that he yearned for the acknowledgement of his colleagues,’’ the report said.

Buehrmann highlighted a case directly after Hoegel’s daughter was born, saying “soon afterwards, the nurse struck again, by manipulating his patient’s medication.’’

“You wanted to hang on to that feeling of happiness, by sending another person to their death,’’ the judge said.

The killing spree ended in 2005 when another nurse caught him in the act of injecting medication that had not been prescribed into a patient.

In his final words to the court on Wednesday, Hoegel asked for forgiveness from the relatives of his victims, saying that the trial on his “terrible crimes’’ had brought him much suffering.

His defence team asked for 55 murders to be considered and 14 attempted murders, calling for acquittal in 31 cases, while prosecutors saw murder proved in 97 cases.

Three other charges failed on grounds of lack of evidence.

  • Speakership: 60 opposition Reps endorse Gbajabiamila/Wase ticket

The Gbajabiamila/Wase Speakership/Deputy Speakership ticket got a boost Thursday as a group of returning and newly elected House of Representatives members called the ‘9th Assembly Progressives’ adopted Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila as Speaker and Hon. Ahmed Idris Wase as Deputy Speaker of the 9th House of Representatives respectively.

According to the group led by , Hon. Oluwole Oke (Obokun/Oriade Federal Constituency, Osun State), who is a ranking member of the House, comprises of non – APC Members and Members – Elect and have large spread among the minority parties, various geopolitical zones and different gender lines.

A statement issued by the group Thursday states that the endorsement of Gbajabiamila and Wase was stimulated by a number of reasons:

“First, in mature democracies with entrenched legislative traditions, the moment there is a leadership vacuum, the leader of a Majority Party in the legislature automatically assumes Headship of that House. Examples abound, including, the recent Speakership of Nancy Pelosi.

“For this reason and in order for us to deepen the progressive values in the National Assembly we, the 9th Assembly Progressives, have adopted the joint ticket of Hon. Femi/Hon. Wase in the Speakership race.

“Second, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, who doubles as the Leader of Hon. Femi’s Party, has nominated him for the Speakership position. Deeming him as a man that will foster peace, unity and prosperity throughout the 9th Assembly.

“Endorsing and voting for him is therefore an endorsement and vote for a smooth and productive working relationship between the Executive and the Legislature in the new Government.

“Third, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila is the most experienced and prepared candidate in the current Speakership race. Hon. Femi has been a Member of the House since 2003 and has played a pivotal role in creating the right legislative culture, values and practice which now characterize the Legislative Arm of Government. His commitment to the defence of democratic values is glaring and he has been consistent in his views, values and votes, which is the hallmark of a true Parliamentarian.

“Fourth, since becoming a Member in 2003, Hon. Femi has sponsored some of the most critical bills that have been debated on the floor of the House of Representatives. Some of his Bills were pivotal and contributed to the amendment of the 1999 Constitution”.

The statement further reads that Gbajabiamila’s innate brilliance “shows in the quality of Bills and Motions he has sponsored in the House and his contribution to debates is passionate, deep, insightful and always logical. He has vast understanding of the Rules of the House and is a Master in Legislative Proceedings.

“Hon. Femi commands the respect of the Members of the House. In 2015, he was overwhelmingly elected as the Leader of the House and he gave support to the current House leadership for the entire term of the 8th Assembly. He has also contributed immensely to making legislative work easy. A notable contribution he made is the printing and distribution of the Rules of the House free of charge to all Members of the 8th Assembly.

“We the 9th Assembly Progressives believe that now is the God ordained time for Hon. Femi and we must join our hands with the voice of the People, which is the voice of God.

“We the undersigned Members-Elect and Returning Members of the 9th Assembly Progressives hereby adopt Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila as Speaker and Hon. Ahmed Idris Wase as Deputy Speaker of the 9th House of Representatives,” the group added in the statement.

The Progressives, who said they currently have sixty lawmakers as members, also urged other colleagues in the 9th House to ensure the election of their preferred candidates for speaker and deputy come June 11.

  • Oil theft: Nigeria loses N995.2 billion annually -NNRC

Nigeria is losing nothing less than N995.2 billion annually to the activities of oil thieves, a Nigerian Natural Resources Charter (NNRC) has revealed.

Disclosing the figure at a one-day seminar on advocacy against crude oil theft, organised by a nongovernmental organisation; the New Nigerian Foundation (NNF), the Head of NNRC, Dr Niyi Awodeyi, also revealed that the haphazard distribution of national wealth was a reason for the prevalence of this vice.

Speaking to stakeholders from various sub-sectors of the oil industry, Awodeyi said the amount lost to crude oil theft could reduce the poverty index of Nigerians.

He said poor governance of oil revenue and corruption, lack of adherence to international best practices by international oil companies, youth unemployment and underemployment were some the causes of crude oil theft in the country.

Awodeyi also noted that the imbalance in the existing federal structure was a factor that has been encouraging corruption which according to him, has also been leading to the disappearance of monies accrued to host communities for developmental purposes.

Quoting a World Bank report which says 80 per cent of total revenue from oil gets to only one per cent of Nigerians, Awondeyi lamented that this has resulted to inequality with its attendant militancy, kidnapping, illegal oil bunkering and other crimes in the region.

Representative of the Delta State government, Mr Godwin Oziboro, Assistant Director, Ministry of Oil & Gas, in his Goodwil Message, had earlier identified poverty, corruption, unemployment, ineffective enforcement of laws and absence of deterrent measures to prosecute culprits as some of the causes of the rise in crude oil theft.

On his part, representative of the Department for Petroleum Resources (DPR), Mr Efe Bright, blamed third party interference on oil facilities, lack of maintenance of the right of way by IOCs and absence of surveillance cameras to monitor oil pipelines as reasons crude oil theft is on the rise in the region.

Chevron Nigeria Limited in a statement made available to newsmen at the seminar said until illegal bunkering and oil theft is reigned in, the Nigerian economy will continue to suffer the loss of revenue from thousands of barrels of oil every day, adding that generation yet unborn will also continue to cope with consequences of their destroyed environment.

  • APC state chairmen pass vote of confidence on Oshiomhole

State Chairmen of the All Progressives Congress (APC) from the 36 states and the FCT on Thursday passed a vote of confidence on National Chairman of the party, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole and the National Working Committee(NWC), asking Nigerians to disregard any information about crisis in the party.

Spokesman of the Forum of State Chairmen and chairman of the party in Enugu state, Dr. Ben Nwoye, told newsmen after a meeting with the NWC members the issues raised by the deputy National Chairman were baseless and meant to embarrass the party, the National Chairman and the President.

Nwoye said the timing of the letter of the Deputy National Chairman was a clear indication of the actual reason for the letter, pointing out the accuser had better avenue to present his grievances, if he had any.

He said they had confidence in the capacity of Oshiomhole to lead the party to greater heights, adding his major role in the last elections was to lead the party campaign to a successful outing.

He said: “We discussed the issue of party unity and the need to move the country forward. Based on information we have and the need for the National Chairman to move this party and this country to the next level, we have all unanimously passed a vote of confidence on the national chairman and the National Working Committee.

“So, any news making the round that our National Chairman is facing crisis should be brought to rest. He is our national chairman, a strong leader and he has all it takes to lead this party to the next level.

“The issue you raised based on your question is high-headedness and that is untrue. We found out based on the meeting we just held with the national chairman and the National Working Committee that those issues are without merit and that they were brought up to malign the National Chairman.

“After listening to the explanations, we the state Chairmen discovered that there was no counter evidence to justify those allegations. It was meant to malign the party, the chairman and indeed the President. You recall that the actual reports came out on a day that was supposed to be the happiest day for the party, the day of inauguration of the President for a second term.

“Anybody with genuine issues should have presented them at the appropriate time and through the right channel and this was not done. So, it was with no other intent than to malign the President and bring us down.

“We are confident of this leadership. Nobody gave President Buhari any chance of winning his second chance even with all that he has done. This Chairman did something that was almost impossible.

“The job of the national chairman was to prosecute the election and he did and we did the unthinkable and the President has been sworn in for a second and we give credit to the National Chairman and the national working Committee.”
