  • Updated: Sanwo-Olu signs 2019 budget of N873.532b

    Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Monday signed the state 2019 Appropriation Bill and three other bills into law.

    The new Capital Expenditure stands at N479.691 billion while Recurrent Expenditure is N393.841 billion, which ratio 55-45 per cent.

    The signing of the Appropriation bill into law ends many months of controversies between the executive and legislative arms. The budget size is N873.532 billion.

    The immediate past governor, Akinwunmi Ambode submitted N852.317 billion to the House of Assembly on February 5, while the legislative house on April 29 passed the bill after increasing it by N21.215 billion.

    The approval came more than 80 days after Ambode had presented the bill following months of face-off between the executive and the legislative.

    The other three bills the governor signed into law are The Domestic Staff Service Provider Registration Law 2019; Lagos State House of Assembly Service Commission (Amended) Law 2019 the Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps Agency Law.

    Speaking at the signing ceremony which took place at the State House, Ikeja, Sanwo-Olu said it was an exciting day for Lagosians as the law would be implemented to the fullest for their benefits.

    He said he was aware that the year was far gone, saying that his administration would deploy the state’s full machinery for effective performance of the budget.

    According to him, “the eight Assembly has been effective in their duties. I am aware that the year is far gone but we will ensure that we quickly deploy all machinery of government in other to achieve full utilization and performance of the budget.

    “We will ensure that all the lines that you have laid will be fully adhered to, in other to ensure that citizens enjoy the benefit of government. As observed, the budget is a 55 to 45 percent, if we are lucky and push on our revenue side, it is not unlikely that before the end of the year, we will not sit to look at the budget again.”

    In his words: “The appropriation bill touches the lives of all residents of the state. We will quickly get to work. There were expenses that were incurred by the immediate past administration because the former governor has the right to spend certain percentage of the budget before it was signed into law.

    “The signing today will help us to disaggregate to the respective ministries, Agencies and departments. So we will need to push on both the revenue and expenditure parts of the budget. This is to ensure that residents of the state feel the impact of the budget that is just signed into law.

    “We will push on the capital revenue side, especially on our revenue and see what are the creative means of financing, that we can bring on board within the law, to ensure that citizens feel the benefit of democratic government.”

    Speaking on the other laws Sanwo-Olu said, “This law on domestic staff will help residents of the state on whoever they are employing to work as domestic staff in their house.

    “The law on the House of Assembly commission is centered on enhancing the House, to work efficiently. It will give the Lagos House free space to operate in the state. It will assist them to implement the full autonomy stipulated by law”, the governor said.

     

  • Court hears suit seeking disqualification of Gbajabiamila June 7

    A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has adjourned until Friday, hearing in a suit challenging the nomination of Mr Femi Gbajabiamila, a member of the House of Representative vying for the position of Speaker of the House of Representatives in the incoming 9th National Assembly.

    Justice Inyang Ekwo adjourned the suit, following the prayer of Chief Philip Undie’s counsel, Mr Olasupo Azeez, that the defendant was yet to be served with the originating process.

    Azeez earlier prayed the court for a short adjournment to enable the plaintiff to regularise the processes before the court and to serve all the defendants by way of substituted means and it was granted.

    Undie in the suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/539/2019 is challenging the eligibility of Gbajabiamila on the grounds that he has a criminal allegation in the state of Georgia, U.S.

    Other defendants in the suit are: the House of Representative, Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and the All Progressives Congress (APC).

    The plaintiff in the suit said that Gbajabiamila ought not to be allowed to contest for the position of the Speaker of the House of Representatives based on information that he had been criminally convicted by the Supreme Court of the State of Georgia.

  • Breaking: Ihedioha gives Okorocha 24 hours to handover

    The Imo state governor, Emeka Ihedioha, has given the immediate past Governor of Imo, Rochas Okorocha up to midnight of Tuesday, June 4, 2019, to do a proper handover to his government.

    Ihedioha spoke at the Government House in Owerri, during the swearing into office of the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Uche Onyeaguocha and Chief of Staff, Chris Okewulonu.

    The governor afterwards ordered the Permanent Secretary, and Head of Service, under Okorocha, to quickly prepare all the necessary documents and hand them over to the SSG, and Chief of Staff, before tomorrow’s midnight.

    The governor also wanted Imo people who desired to have a feel of the dilapidation in the government house at the moment, to feel free to do so.

    Ihedioha’s warning is coming days after it was reported in Vanguard that he claimed that it has been very difficult for him as governor to operate from the current Imo state government House and in addition, he did not have documents to work on as a governor.

    As it is now, Ihedioha is yet to make public where he will be operating from to administer his official duties as the governor of the state, for the meantime.

    Ihedioha briefly said: “I direct Head of Service and Permanent Secretary, to ensure a complete handover of all government properties, the last administration utilised on behalf of Imo people to SSG and Chief of Staff of Imo state government. I want the process to be completed by midnight tomorrow.

    “I spoke to Imo people that we will start work, we will resume work. We will give no excuses of not performing. We will give dividend of democracy irrespective of the status of the state of facilities I inherited.

    “The government that ended was not prepared to handover or ready to receive us. I thank Imo people for receiving us and we shall serve the state with the fear of God.”

  • BBNaija season 4 premieres June 30

    The highly anticipated fourth season of the Big Brother Naija reality show will premiere on June 30.

    News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the announcement was made by DStv on Monday through their Twitter handle @DStvng.

    They wrote, “Okay! We can’t wait no more! #BBNaija2019 storms your screens on June 30th!”

    Although the theme for the upcoming season has not been revealed, Multichoice has been teasing the show with posters that read, “spicy hot”.

    In January, Mr John Ugbe, the Chief Executive Officer of MultiChoice Nigeria revealed that the show will take place in Nigeria for the first time since its return.

    NAN reports that in February, auditions were held in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Calabar, Warri, Ibadan, Benin and Enugu.

    The first season of the show first aired in 2006. This was followed by ‘See Gobe’ in 2017 which was won by Efe Ejeba. In 2018, Miracle Ikechukwu won ‘Double Wahala’.

    NAN reports that ex-housemate and perennial host, Ebuka Obi-Uchendu will return to host the show.

  • Investors’ tour Edo Innovation Hub, Production, creative centres

    Edo State Skills Development Agency (EdoJobs) in collaboration with Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH under its Skills Development for Youth Employment in Nigeria (SKYE) programme, has concluded plans to host over 20 private sector companies, investors, donor organisations and financial institutions to a working visit of various skills development and job creation initiatives in Edo State.

    The Senior Special Assistant to Governor Obaseki on Skills Development and Jobs Creation, and Head of EdoJobs, Mrs Ukinebo Dare, said the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led government is expanding centres for investors to key into the Federal Government’s development agenda.

    “We are really excited about our growing collaboration with GIZ through its Skills Development for Youth Employment (SKYE) programme. They are currently supporting our job creation initiatives in the state,” Mrs Ukinebo said.

    The 2-day event will give visiting companies and stakeholders the opportunity to tour the Edo Innovation Hub, Edo Production Centre on Sapele Road, Edo Food and Agriculture Cluster and the Edo Creative Hub. These Centres show how far the state government has gone in building local capacities in innovation and technology for manufacturers, the creative industry, and small-scale businesses.

    The highpoint of the event will be the launch of the Edo Production Centre. The Centre is a multipurpose facility created with a conducive environment to boost productivity for manufacturers and small-scale businesses.

    Mrs Dare said the Edo Production Centre and other centres in the state hold a lot of investment opportunities for companies interested in investing in the state. The state government recently signed the bill setting up EdoJobs into law to ensure the sustainability of these initiatives, geared towards creating wealth and boosting the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the state.

    The relationship between EdoJobs and GIZ’s SKYE programme is in their thematic areas which cut across youth skills development, job creation, industrial manufacturing, and agriculture, all of which are tied to the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 8 – promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all.

  • Breaking: Imo chairmen, councillors barricade Assembly

    Elected Council Chairmen and Councillors in Imo State on Monday, stormed the Imo State House of Assembly, barricading the entrance to protest reported plan by the Lawmakers to terminate their tenure.

    The aggrieved Chairmen and their supporters arrived the Assembly complex in a large crowd of supporters as early as 9am but were prevented from gaining entrance into the premises by a detachment of Policemen deployed to the House of Assembly to forestall possible breakdown of law and Order.

    Speaking to newsmen, the leader of Okigwe legislative council, Godwin Nwankwo, said that they had inkling that the lawmakers wanted to carry out the action at a plenary scheduled for Monday.

    Nwankwo who is also the chairman of Association of elected councillors in Imo state, said that their intention was to be part of the plenary and observe the proceedings.

    He said, “We heard rumours that the lawmakers want to repudiate the laws they made. They want to approbate and reprobate. This is a law that they made that local governments are to serve for three years. We are lawmakers and not lawbreakers. The way they are elected is the way we are elected. All elections are the same under the constitution. They have no power to dissolve us.

    The Speaker of the assembly, Chinedu Offor, who neither confirmed nor denied it, asked how the Chairmen got to know about the intention of the House when they were not spirits.

    He asked our correspondent to wait for further clarification.

    Offor said, “How did they know what we want to do? Are they spirits?

    Asked if the lawmakers have the intention of sacking the chairmen and councillors, Offor said, “Wait until we finish.”

    As at the time of writing, the lawmakers are said to be having an executive session in preparation to going into plenary.

  • Breaking: Ex-NIMASA DG sentenced to seven-year imprisonment

    The Federal High Court in Lagos on Monday sentenced convicted former Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) acting Director-General Calistus Obi to seven years imprisonment.

    The court, however, gave him an option of N42million fine.

    Justice Mojisola Olatoregun had on May 23 found him guilty of money laundering and converting the agency’s funds to personal use.

    The court refused to order the forfeiture of his seized assets.
