  • Woman dies 15 months after attack by housemaid in Lagos

Lagos- A 59-year-old woman, Mistura Ogundipe, has lost her life after battling with injuries she sustained 15 months ago when she was attacked by her 18-year-old housemaid, Susan Samson, in Lagos.

A family source told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Lagos that Ogundipe passed on Thursday night at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja.

The source also said that the deceased was buried on Friday at Atan Cemetery in Yaba, Lagos in accordance with Islamic rites.

The domestic servant, simply identified as Susan, had on March 3, 2018, allegedly attempted to kill her boss, at her Ejigbo residence in Lagos by pouring blended pepper on her and hitting her head with a champagne bottle after her boss discovered that she had been stealing from her.

Ogundipe was rescued by neighbours who jumped into the compound after they heard her scream and saw blood flowing through the gate of her house.

She was said to be in coma for three days at LASUTH before she was finally revived after a three-hour surgery.

NAN reported that the deceased had been a frequent visitor to the hospital for check-up and treatment, following the injury she sustained.

“She was later admitted after much complication and remained hospitalised in the past six months during which she eventually gave up the ghost,’’ the source told NAN.

The deceased had, on the day of the incident ,got in touch with the agent who brought the maid that she no longer required her services.

The maid who did not want to leave the house, allegedly panicked and attacked Ogundipe.

The maid quickly went into hiding but was located and arrested by some members of Oodua People’s Congress (OPC).

She allegedly confessed to the crime and was subsequently handed over to Ejigbo Police Division.

The housemaid is currently facing attempted murder charge before a court in Lagos.

  • Do you spend more on your car or wife?

RECENTLY, a close neighbour of ours could not wait to show us his new car. “Come Madam,” he said, “I want to show you something”. As I followed him, he took me straight to the car park, pointing towards the car. I must admit the car was quite a very clean one, but it was not the car that got the better part of my attention; it was the excitement on his face. He just could not hide it. He was beaming from ear to ear. Just by looking at his face, you could tell that the car was just his dream come true.  Just as we were still admiring the car, a thought suddenly crossed my mind. In all my years on planet earth, never have I seen a man this happy or excited showing off his wife and I am like, what is it with men and cars. Are wives not supposed to be prized far above rubies (the virtous ones, I mean)? I do not think it is fair to us woman, if a mere car should get more attention from the man then us.

A cousin of mine claims that her man spends a fortune to maintain his cars, but when she dares to ask for an increment in her allowances, he questions her and then complains that the economy is bad. Call this a protest if you like, but some wives simply can’t recall the last time their man showed them off to either friends or co-workers. In order, not to be seen as one-sided, I decided to speak with some respondents on why the wife and the car have to be in competition in the first place. Their responses are as varied as their names and faces are.

Sola: “I don’t know, I have never really thought about it. I think I spend more money on my wife. In my opinion, I feel a woman is more expensive than a car, although in a way, a wife is comparable to a car because she is something you acquired and then you are under obligation to take care of her. Your wife is a part of your life and often times you are more conscious of your wife than your car”.

Yemi: “My wife is far more useful to me than my car. You see, I can afford to park my car, if it will make my wife happy because before the car came, my wife had been there, and after the car, my wife will still be there. So in the light of this, I would rather pay more attention or spend more on my wife than my car.

Muyiwa: “My wife comes before the car. The reason is that if I don’t maintain my wife, she would not last in my house. I can afford to buy a car today and discard it tomorrow, but I cannot do same with my wife.

In the first instance, my wife is a human being, and, as such, he is far more valuable than my car; although on the other hand, one needs to maintain the car to keep the family mobile”.

Ben: “My wife will kill me, if she reads this, but faithfully speaking, I spend more money on my car than I do on my wife. The car is also meant to ease her outings and the kids. Instead of her hopping from one bus to the other, the car will be a better deal for the whole family.

Leke: “In fact, one’s car is considered to be person’s first wife. For instance, if one is always seen with a car and he is suddenly seen trekking, the first thing he will be asked is about his car and perhaps later his wife. When a car breaks down, one cannot afford to leave or dump it, even if there is no money, one must borrow to get the car back on the road.

  • Alleged rape: we had consensual sex, ex-UNILAG lecturer tells court

Dr Afeez Baruwa, an ex-lecturer in the University of Lagos accused of raping a 17-year-old admission seeker (name withheld) has said that he had consensual sexual intercourse with the teenager.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Baruwa made the claim on Friday while testifying for five hours before an Ikeja High Court.

Led in evidence by his counsel, Mr Olanrewaju Ajanaku, Baruwa described himself as a community leader at Abesan, Lagos, and an academic who worked as a project supervisor at the Distant Learning Institution (DLI) of the university from 2010 to 2015.

He said that the father of the complainant, also a community leader at Abesan Low Cost Housing Estate, where they both lived, was known to him and had approached him to aid his daughter to gain admission into the institution.

Baruwa said that in the early hours of July 23, 2015, the man dropped off the teenager at his home and they both left for university for him to resume work and also to help her with admission.

He said: “We arrived Unilag at 6.05a.m., and we went down to my friend’s office where I use as my study room as well as supervision contact.

”As we were going upstairs, we saw about seven Muslims observing their normal early morning prayer.

“In the office, we were talking generally; then I offered her tea or coffee, she settled for coffee and she made it for herself. All this while, the door of the office was open and there was no way I could put on the air conditioner.

“She told me that as a result of the coffee, she was feeling hot and that I would need to shut the door. I responded that it was too early in the morning (before 7a.m.) for us to be alone.

“She told me to lock the door that after all, she was mature enough, and I did. After that, she picked up a textbook to read. She sat on a single chair while I sat on a three-seat chair.”

The former lecturer said he fell asleep but was woken up after about 20 minutes by the complainant who, he claimed, was fondling him.

“Her hands were all over me and I woke up and I looked at her. By then, she had already removed the buttons of her blouse and I did suck her breasts.

“She said she needed to pull her white shirt so that it will not be stained and she had her jeans trousers on. We were romancing each other in that position, my lord.

“She told me that she wanted me to have sex with her and I replied that there was no way I could practise unsafe sex with her; this was some minutes past 7a.m. .

“She sucked my penis and I thereafter released, and around that time, one of my students came in, but we had dressed up,” Baruwa said.

He said after the sexual contact, he, the complainant and the student went to the Commercial Center in the institution to make enquiries about her eligibility to study mass communication with her UTME score of 211.

According to him, they got information that the score did not qualify her to write post UTME, and he advised her to apply to study English with the score.

He said after they left the Commercial Center, the teenager went to see some friends and came to his office later to say farewell to him and thank him for his efforts in helping her to seek admission.

Baruwa said: “She offered to give me a hug as a sign of appreciation and I obliged her, my lord. When we hugged, she moved her hands toward my penis. This was a few minutes after 10a.m.

“There were a lot of students outside the office, they sat around the stairs waiting to go in for the next batch of lectures. I told her to be conscious of the students that were outside.

“She threatened to shout and create a scene if I refuse to have sex with her and I told her like I did early in the morning that there was no way that I could have unsafe sex with her and she told me to look for a condom.

“My lord, I was scared because I noticed the desperation in her. I left her in the office and went downstairs to look for a condom. When I returned, I locked the door and turned the other way to wear the condom.

“When I turned back to meet her, she had already removed her jean trousers; that was how we had sex. About 10 to 15 minutes later, she told me that she was okay.

“I teased her that she was self-centred because I was yet to release. I put back my clothes and went to the toilet to clean myself. We stayed in the office for another 20 minutes before I saw her off to the bus stop.”

Baruwa denied raping the complainant and said he had known her before she was introduced to him by her father.

According to him, he took her on three or four occasions to the university and he thought she was aged 23 years or 24 years, because she was plump, until she allegedly told him she was approaching her 19th birthday.

Baruwa told the court that a week after the sexual encounters, he received a text message from the complainant’s father threatening to deal with him for what he did to his daughter.

He said that on Aug. 3, 2015, he was arrested by the police who were accompanied by the complainant and her father.

  • Breaking: NECO scraps use of scratch cards

The National Examination Council has scrapped the use of scratch cards for the conduct of its Senior Secondary Certificate Examination.

Instead, the board said it had procured 8,000 biometric machines for registration of candidates during the conduct of its examinations.

NECO’s Board Chairman, Dr Abubakar Saddiq, stated this during the commissioning of the equipment and unveiling of 20 Toyota Hilux Vans purchased by the agency, in Minna on Friday.

He said the biometric machines would help to tackle the challenges of impersonation experienced in the conduct of its examinations.

Saddiq said: “In the last people have to buy scratch cards in order to register for NECO examination. That is out. No more scratch cards. People (will) register online and they (will) be given a code and they will go ahead to register.

“As they register, their biometrics are captured. Every school is on a particular biometric data capturing machine. Every data is captured on that small machine.

“It is impossible for anybody to impersonate a candidate during our exams because the captured data is on our platform.”

NECO’s Acting Registrar, Mr Abubakar Gana, said that the equipment were procured to enhance operations in the areas of logistics and overall security of its examination.

According to him, NECO had been making use of scratch cards to register over 51,000 candidates for each of its examinations in the past which had not enabled the agency to curb malpractices.

According to him, the 8,000 biometrics machine cost the council N500 million while the 20 Toyota Hilux gulped N327, 800,000.

“Each of the vehicles cost N16, 390,000 while a unit of the biometric capture machine was bought at N62, 500,” he said.

Gana also noted that about N2 billion was generated through the sale of scratch cards to candidates and as such, returned same to the Treasury Single Account of the Federal Government.

“The last time the council bought vehicles was in 2013; we have also bought 8,000 units of biometric capture machines, which can verify the identity of candidates, as well as record attendance.

“In the last year, we were able to save money.

“The essence of the biometric is to deal with impersonation to help sanitise the system thereby having quality standards.

“We have been able to utilise our scarce resources and save more to be able to procure the necessary equipment for our operations,” he said.

This is the first time NECO would be deploying biometrics for the conduct of its Senior Secondary Certificate Examination.

  • Six benefits of family planning

The recent population outburst has raised an alarm and called for the need of population control. One of the ways to do that is to indulge in family planning.

However, many families shy away from family planning basing their decision solely on fear.  Nevertheless, family planning goes a long way in helping both the family and society at large.

    ·       It gives women variety of choices

When a woman chooses if and when to get pregnant, it has a direct impact on her health and well-being. Family planning permits pregnancies to be spaced. It can also prevent health risks and problems of death from early childbearing.

It prevents unintended pregnancies, including those of older women who are done with child bearing. Family planning enables women who wish to limit the size of their families to do so as studies show that women who have more than 4 children are at an increased risk of maternal mortality.

    Reduces infant mortality

Family planning helps avoid closely spaced and ill-timed pregnancies and births. This helps reduce high infant mortality rate which is usually caused by poor spacing and bad timing.

    Helps to prevent HIV/AIDS

By extension, family planning reduces the risk of unintended pregnancies among women living with HIV. This will lead to fewer infected babies and orphans. In addition, male and female condoms provide protection against Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) and unintended pregnancies.

    Empowers people and enhances education

It also empowers people to make informed choices about their sexual and reproductive health. Women can in addition, pursue education, gain employment and be more active in the society.

    Allows for investment in children

Having smaller families with appropriate spacing allows parents to invest more in each child. It will enable financial capabilities to take care of the children.

    Slows population growth

Family planning is key to slowing the population outburst Nigeria is currently facing. As a result, it will reduce the negative impacts of overpopulation on the economy, environment, and national and regional development efforts.

  • Navy gets standard jetty 15 years after

The Nigerian Navy (NN) on Friday inaugurated a standard jetty at the NNS BEECROFT in Apapa, the cradle of the service over 15-years after the establishment jetty suffered dilapidation.

The service also inaugurated its third locally built boat, a 25-man House Boat, 26 vehicles including 10 liberty buses and 16 Hilux trucks, as well as the remodelled Naval Dockyard Limited Apprentice School Victoria Island.

The inaugurations carried out by the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Defence Mrs. Naratu Batagarawa, were part of activities to celebrate the NN’s 63rd anniversary.

Mrs. Batagarawa used the opportunity to commend the NN for the strides recorded in the past four years in the areas of manpower development, availability of platforms for sustained operations and improved welfare for its personnel.

She charged the navy to take adequate steps at providing needed capacity to help build the nation.

“The Nigerian Navy is expected to maintain the required presence that would ensure adequate protection of our sea lines of commerce and communication which are vital to our national survival.

“Specifically, the prevention or at least reduction to the barest minimum of all forms of illegal economic activities particularly crude oil theft as well as the protection of the environment from pollution also presents formidable challenges.

“These for me will continue to be areas of emphasis as we move to a brighter future of economic prosperity, political stability and technological development,” she said.

Vice Admiral Ibas said the completion of the jetty and other projects were part of the navy’s broader goal encapsulated in its transformation plan 2011-2020 detailed to cover operations, fleet renewal logistics, human resource management and administration.

He said the Houseboat would be one of a series, designed to complement existing houseboats, as part of the NN choke point strategy in compliance with presidential directives.

“As part of effort to enhance transportation and welfare of personnel, about 130 assorted vehicles, including trucks, buses, ambulances were procured within the past year.

“I am glad to note that the NN had made giant strides in the last four years with commensurate improvement in the availability of platforms for sustained operations, manpower development and welfare, as well as notable presence in the nation’s security architecture within the Gulf of Guinea (GoG).

“Our desire is to bequeath to the future generations, a navy that is operationally capable and administratively responsive in the task of securing our maritime domain and fulfilling other assigned tasks.

“The reconstructed NNS BEECROFT jetty is a key enabler in the attainment of these strategic objectives, as it would provide the needed berthing facility for various platforms acquired under the NN Fleet recapitalisation effort to improve NN capabilities and operational efficiency.

“The jetty is thus urgently required for the projection of maritime power, particularly across the nation’s western maritime frontiers. With the commissioning of the reconstructed jetty and a 250 ton capacity slipway soon to be completed, NNS BEECROFT, the cradle of NN, will shortly wear a new look.

“The 25-Man Houseboat is another innovative project and a clear testimony to Mr President’s increased support for indigenous technology and local research.

“Following the successful construction of the houseboat, the NN will continue to challenge the dockyard and shipyard with other construction and reconstruction projects, which will directly enhance capacity building and job creation.

“I am pleased to mention that the construction of the houseboat is going to be one of a series, designed to complement existing houseboats, as part of the NN Choke point strategy, in compliance with presidential directives.”

For the apprentice school, the CNS said its restoration after 24 years was the needed catalyst for the development of critical specialised manpower needed to transform NN’s and the nation’s industrial shipbuilding and yard services within the next decade.

“It is projected that the school would commence full operations shortly, as a centre for the training and certification of artificers, crane and forklift operators, fitters, wielders and riggers,” he said.
