  • Breaking: Police uncover plans to disrupt Abiodun’s May 29 inauguration

The Ogun State Police Command on Tuesday said it has uncovered plans by unscrupulous individuals to instigate crisis across the state, ostensibly to disrupt the inauguration of the Governor-elect, Prince Dapo Abiodun and his Deputy; Engr. Noimot Salako – Oyedele on May 29, 2019.

The Command added that the unscrupulous elements intended to carry out the disruptive scheming on the planned inauguration through orchestrated rallies, processions and assemblies in public places across Ogun State.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, who made this known in a release, stated that the Police got wind of the plot via “security intelligence.”

Oyeyemi, a Deputy Superintendent of Police(DSP), explained that the enemies of peace and criminally minded fellows schemed to embark on such disruptive path with a seeming appearance of using it to settle land related disputes in the state whereas their target is Abiodun’s inauguration.

The Police Spokesman, therefore, advised such people to approach the court for justice and not attempt to heat up the polity in Ogun state.

He stated: “The Security Intelligence at the disposal of Ogun State Police reveals that some unscrupulous elements are scheming to foment trouble across the State with a view to disrupting the inauguration of the new administration scheduled for 29th May, 2019.

“Rallies, processions and assemblies in public places are being orchestrated by these enemies of peace seemingly to resolve chieftaincy and land-related matters rather than approaching the Court to seek justice. All of these are aimed at heating up the State before the inauguration.

“In view of this, the Command has put in place a robust security arrangement aimed at checkmating such trouble makers and other criminally-minded persons, including miscreants and disgruntled elements.

“The special units of the Command namely SARS, PMF, STS, Anti kidnapping as well as DPOS and Area Commanders have been placed on red alert with specific instruction to closely monitor these misguided elements and respond swiftly to any distress calls and disturbance of public peace.

“Consequently, members of public are hereby advised, for the purpose of peace, law and order, to put on hold, for now, any form of public procession, rally or carnival related to chieftaincy and land matters and rather seek alternative dispute resolution methods, or approach the law court for redress.

“In furtherance to this, persons or group intending to hold public assemblies and rallies other than as stated above are advised to contact the office of the Commissioner of Police, Ogun State, for necessary approval and security.

“The Command will not hesitate to deal decisively with anybody or group who attempts to disrupt the peace of the State no matter how highly placed such person(s) may be, as the law is no respecter of anybody. The Police in Ogun State is committed to the defense of the rule of law, safety and security for all law abiding citizens in Ogun State.”

  • Game of Thrones petition: over 700, 000 fans demand season 8 remake

Over 700, 000 fans of the popular television show, ‘Game of Thrones’ have called for a remake of what they termed “a disappointing last season”.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the fans are signing a change.org petition titled ‘Remake Game of Thrones Season 8 with competent writers’.

The petition had garnered 736, 080 signatures at the time of this report on Friday, and was gaining more supporters by the second.

The petition read, “David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have proven themselves to be woefully incompetent writers when they have no, source material to fall back on. This series deserves a final season that makes sense.”

HBO’s ‘Game of Thrones’, which was adapted from George R.R. Martin’s ‘A song of fire and ice’, started outpacing the series of novels in season six.

After the show was on hiatus for all of 2018, the premiere of season eight in April was the most-watched one-day event in HBO’s more than four-decade history.

A lot of fans have described the season as underwhelming and a poor finale to a great show. Among the numerous issues, fans complained about the poorly lit ‘Battle of Winterfell’ in episode three.

They also complained about the inconsistent storylines, poor character arcs and were outraged when the otherwise carefully shot series accidentally left a paper coffee cup in episode four.

HBO acknowledged that the presence of the disposable cup in the scene was a mistake, and later edited it out of the episode.

In the penultimate episode of the series, which aired May 12, Daenerys executed Lord Varys before wiping out King’s Landing and most of its population, even after the bells of surrender sounded.

NAN reports that many thought the massacre was completely out-of-character for Daenerys — or at the very least needed more of a build-up.

‘Game of Thrones’ has had an average of 43 million viewers per episode which is expected to rise as the final episode airs on Sunday.

  • Abdulrazaq didn’t forge WAEC certificate, says INEC

Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and counsel to Kwara state Governor-elect Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, Salman Jawondo Thursday defended the genuineness of the West African Examinations Certificate (WAEC) presented to INEC for the 2019 governorship elections in the state by the about-to-be-sworn-in governor.

People’s Democratic Party (PDP), its governorship candidate and Action Alliance are challenging the authenticity of the WAEC certification presented to INEC by the APC governor-elect for the March 9th governorship elections

At the resumed pre-hearing trial of the election petition tribunal in Ilorin, Jawondo tendered photocopy of WAEC certificate of another person to the tribunal to show that names or initials of candidates can be abbreviated.

However, counsel to the PDP governorship candidate and the PDP in the state, Kingsley Odeh, argued that West African Examination Council (WAEC) does not abbreviate surname, even if it were to abbreviate first names.

Odeh, who identified “conflict” in the documents tendered by Jawondo, said that the governor-elect submitted a WAEC certificate with Razaq A.P in 2019 and a document which reads Razaq A.R. in 2014.

“That’s the conflict”, he said, adding that the “photocopy of WAEC certificate tendered by Jawondo was General certificate in Education of WAEC and not that of the Senior Secondary School Examination certificate of WAEC.”

Speaking with reporters after the sitting, counsel to the INEC, Rowland Otaru (SAN) said that petitioner got it wrong to put initials of the governor-elect as A.P.

“What the petitioners were saying in their pleadings is that Abdulrazaq A.P., but initials of the governor-elect is not even A.P. It is A.R. So, even from the body of their petition, they are even wrong. We now want to show that the certificate of the governor elect is genuine, valid and issued by WAEC. With due respect, they are just playing to the gallery.

“The photocopy brought was to show the court that it’s not wrong for names of candidates to have initials. The court then asked for the original of the certificate to be brought in order to compare it with the photocopy tendered. And so be it.”

Otaru said that he did not give consent to declaration of results and documents presented by the petitioner yesterday, noting that the onus was on them to prove.

“In the fullness of time, we are going to canvass very strong argument in respect of documents which they seemed to tender,” he said.

Counsel to the PDP governorship candidate and the PDP in the state, Kingsley Odeh, said that it was actually the governor-elect’s counsel that tendered bundle of evidences containing second respondent’s certificate that was submitted alongside other documents.

“The photocopy of certificate actually submitted for 2019 elections reads Razaq AP. Now, in their response, they have annexed another document, a certificate he actually submitted in 2014 general elections. That document reads Razaq A.R. So, they’ve actually aided our case. They’ve made everything simple. It shows clearly that in 2019 they submitted a document with Razaq A.P. and in 2014 they submitted a document which reads Razaq A.R. That’s the conflict.

“For the purpose of clarity, WAEC does not abbreviate surname, even if it were to abbreviate first names. Razaq A.P. and Razaq A.R. can mean that any other person can claim the abbreviation. In his age declaration that was attached to the documents like INEC voters card, testimonial from secondary school in Kaduna, all those documents bear his full names, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq. There was nowhere his name was abbreviated.

“On pleadings by INEC, which is a custodian of the documents that were pleaded, the counsel does not even have them in court. The INEC counsel was also objecting to his documents tendered by the petitioner, which is a declaration of result.

“He refused to give his consent to the documents. What they are hiding would be revealed during trial, to show that the petitioner had made out case for themselves. You cannot tender two contradictory documents. That’s why in our second ground of petition we are saying that the second respondent gave false information containing his affidavit submitted to INEC in aid of his educational qualification”, he said.

The tribunal adjourned proceedings to May 22, 2019 for continuation of pre-hearing.

This will also enable INEC produce documents in its custody.

  • Six things to do before house hunting

    By Praise Olowe

In order to end up with a great house in a great neighbourhood, there are a couple of things to consider before you begin house hunting. This will help to smoothen out the house hunting process for you.

Before browsing the market for a cosy new home, condo, or apartment, the first question to ask yourself is how long you intend to live there.

Here, six things to keep in mind as you’re house hunting.

    Know the Market a Little

Try to spend some time getting to know the market a little. You should not be completely ignorant about what the house hunting process entails to avoid being cheated. Browse real estate listings, familiarize yourself with the different neighbourhoods you are considering, ask around for recommendations on good real estate agents or consultancies, talk to friends, family and even co-workers to get to know about some of their house hunting knowledge and experiences etc. Try to get as much information as you can about the house hunting process beforehand.

    Find a Good Agent

A good real estate agent or realtor is hard to find, but you are going to have to work to search them out. A good agent is someone who knows the market well, is knowledgeable about the area you are interested in and can point out problems with potential homes. Once you can get a good agent that knows their stuff and is able to get you a great house, it makes the house hunting process much easier. One of the best ways to get a good agent is through recommendations from family and friends. You can also go to trusted real estate consultancies for some help.

    Stick to Your Budget

It’s not enough to just have a budget; you need to be able to stick to it. Consider your monthly cash flow and figure out the amount of money that you can conveniently devote to housing payments (the key word here is conveniently). A general rule to guide you is that the money you set aside monthly for house payments should not be higher than 25 – 30% of your monthly income.

    Choose a Location

Well, this is obvious, however, it’s not just about choosing a location but the factors you consider when choosing this location. Unfortunately, a lot of people are ignorant of the vital factors to consider when searching for a house and end up choosing a great looking house in a terrible location. You should consider if you feel safe in the area (not just if the agent tells you the area is safe). Do your own research about the area, ask around. Consider the traffic situation around the area, especially during rush hour. Also, consider if there is likely going to be noise disturbances from any source that is beyond what you can handle. In addition, take note of how clean and well-kept the neighbourhood is. Are you likely to be dealing with typhoid issues when living there because of the dirty water etc.?

     Insist on a home inspection
Typically, home inspections are conducted after an offer is accepted on the property. While homeowners are expected to mention issues with the house in the disclosure document, new issues may come to light during the inspection. In this case, oftentimes buyers renegotiate their offer, but it is also possible to retract an offer entirely if serious, deal-breaking problems are revealed.

    Have a Sizeable Leftover

You would think many would know this, but there is an alarming number of people that spend almost the entirety of their income on buying or renting a new house. No matter what, this should never be done. Houses need constant maintenance, and even after buying the house there are still one or two unforeseen expenses you might need to make, you, therefore, should avoid putting everything down on a house. Ensure you have a sizeable leftover, that can act as a sort of emergency fund and that can be enough for your general upkeep.
