  • World leaders set to speak at UN, with Trump in focus

World leaders will begin the annual days of speeches at the UN General Assembly in New York on Tuesday, with U.S. President Donald Trump’s address expected to draw much of the focus.

Trump is speaking amid worsening tensions between the U.S. and Iran.

While the U.S. president has not ruled out meeting with Iranian President Hassan Rowhani, who will address the assembly on Wednesday, the chance of that happening seems unlikely.

Tensions have been rising between the two nations ever since Trump pulled Washington out of a 2015 deal between Tehran and world powers, in spite of no sign then of violations by Iran.

The agreement aimed at preventing Tehran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.

Trump has since been imposing tough sanctions on Iran, seeking to cripple the country’s economy and force the country to change its foreign policy.

There have been concerns in recent months that the countries could go to war, most recently after an attack on a Saudi Arabian oil field, which is largely being blamed on Tehran.

Iran rejects responsibility. Trump says he is showing restraint, for now, and is not launching strikes.

Also addressing the UN on Tuesday will be Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, French President Emmanuel Macron, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sissi and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, among others.

The General Debate section comes a day after the UN held a major summit on climate change.

Trump will hold a series of bilateral meetings during the day, including with U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres and Iraqi President Barham Salih.

The first round of the challenge involved the Housemates walking continuously across the Arena from the starting line to the finish line and back again until they heard the buzzer to stop.

NAN reports that the Housemate with the number closest to the total was awarded the title Head of House.

Seyi said the total of the Chin-Chin in the bucket was 4,750 while the actual number was 3090 making him the one with the closest correct estimate

Apart from immunity, Seyi was given 250 Bet9ja coins, bonus coins for his Team and the Head of House Bedroom privileges which he refused to share with anyone.

Two doctors with Federal Medical Centre, Asaba, have appeared before the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria Tribunal, to answer charges of gross professional negligence.

The doctors, Iyiola Adewale and Adigba Onodjohwoyovwe, are accused of gross professional negligence which led to the death of a patient in their care.

The prosecuting counsel, Mr Nasiru Aliyu, told the tribunal on Monday in Asaba that the defendants while on duty on March 7, 2017, negligently handled one of their patients, a pregnant woman, Mrs Rita Uchebuego, now late.

  • $9.6b verdict: P&ID offers to negotiate with Fed Govt

    • Nigeria to pursue case ‘to logical conclusion’
    • Delegation to allay investors’ fears

Owners of Irish firm, Process and Industrial Developments Ltd (P&ID), which got a $9.6billion judgment against Nigeria, have made offers for settlement.

The offers came after a Federal High Court in Abuja wound up the firm and its Nigerian affiliate following their guilty plea to fraud and money laundering.

The Federal Government received five negotiation offers from individuals close to the firm, it was learnt on Monday.

One of those interested in negotiation is Adam Quinn, son of P&ID’s owner, the late Michael Quinn.

Already, the government has initiated moves to get him repatriated to Nigeria to face trial.

The government has, however, put the offers on hold pending the outcome of the case before a United Kingdom court on Thursday.

Attorney-General of the Federation Abubakar Malami (SAN), Inspector-General of Police Mohammed Adamu; and Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Acting Chairman Ibrahim Magu yesterday spent hours briefing foreign lawyers on forensic investigation of the controversial gas project.

It was learnt that the team met with major UK media organisation to explain Nigeria’s position on the matter.

The delegation is expected to hold a crucial session with investors tomorrow to allay fears of likely collapse of the nation’s economy as a result of the judgment.

A source, who spoke in confidence with our correspondent, said: “Ahead of the legal battle on Thursday against P&ID, the Federal Government has received five offers from some individuals acting on behalf of the Irish firm for negotiation.

“One of those seeking peaceful resolution of the row is Adam Quinn, who is a son to the late owner of P&ID. For security reasons, we want to keep other names under wraps.

“The government has, however, decided to put these offers in abeyance, pending the outcome of Thursday’s sitting. We are not opposed to talks or negotiation, but, given a similar circumstance in the past, the government is a bit circumspect about any offer from the representatives/ associates of P&ID and other arbiters.

“We want to pursue this case to its logical conclusion before we give any other option a thought.”

Investigation confirmed that Malami, Adamu and Magu have spent quality time with the foreign lawyers engaged by the Federal Government.

Another source added: “These three leaders on the delegation, who were saddled with the investigation of the gas contract awarded to P&ID, had considerable discussion with the offshore lawyers on their findings.

“The report of the EFCC was presented to the foreign lawyers to underscore the fact that the gas contract was a scam. All the procedures, suspects’ statements, relevant documents and court judgments were made available to the offshore lawyers to strengthen Nigeria’s case.

“We are building our case on the fraudulent contract, non-execution of any job and how the arbitration panel was misled into the award of the $9.6billion damages against the Federal Government.

“We want the UK court to grant Nigeria’s request for a stay of execution of the judgment.”

An official said: “Members of the delegation had audience with Reuters, AP, Financial Times, and other agencies. On Tuesday (today), the team will meet with BBC team to set the records straight that P&ID was just being smart in securing the $9.6billion award.

“The impression out there in the international community was as if the nation defaulted or reneged on a contract when the entire process was invalid.

“Part of the mandate of the delegation is to change the narrative that Nigeria violated contract terms with P&ID.”

It was learnt that the delegation will hold a business session with investors in the UK on Wednesday.

Malami confirmed some of the findings of The Nation on the activities of the delegation in London.

He said: “It is simply that we met with our local and international legal teams in the High Commission office in London.

“We took briefings from the teams in Nigeria and UK for the purpose of developing strategies targeted at setting aside the award.”

  • ‘Lawmaker raped me, promised to give me N20m if my husband divorced me’

A businesswoman, Nkeiruka Cynthia Kamalu, has told a Federal High Court in Lagos that she was raped by a federal lawmaker, Uju Kingsley Chima, on August 9, 2015.

Mrs Kamalu told Justice Nicholas Oweibo that following an incestuous relationship with Chima, the lawmaker offered to pay her N20 million if she was divorced by her husband, Mr Gabriel Igbibi.

Chima is the Member, Federal House of Representatives for Ohaji/Egbema, Oguta and Oru West Federal Constituency of Imo State.

She is seeking protection from Chima, who she alleged caused her to be arrested on 27th day of May, 2019 tortured, humiliated, detained for seven days by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) and arraigned on a fictitious N40million theft charge.

Kamalu made the allegations in a fundamental rights suit marked FHC/L/CS/1458/19 which came up on September 11, 2019.

Her counsel, Chijioke Jiakponna, told the judge that Chima had been evading service. He alleged that when the bailiff called Chima on phone to inform him that he wanted to serve him, the lawmaker cut the call.

Justice Oweibo adjourned till yesterday to rule on whether to allow substituted service.

Monday, the court did not sit.

When The Nation phoned Chima on Saturday evening for his reaction to the rape and N20m allegations, he said “I’m inside a court now, can we talk later? I’m inside a court.”

Later that night and Monday, his number rang out.

In her August 22, 2019 Affidavit of Urgency, Kamalu said she filed the suit due to the “intimidation, mounting surveillance and or illegal oral invitation threat of life and annihilation of property.”

She said she had been living “in perpetual fear” of being further detained “indefinitely.”

Kamalu is seeking several reliefs including a declaration that her arrest and detention “by the respondent at the State CID Police Headquarters, Owerri, Imo State (SARS) for seven days was unconstitutional.”

Others include a declaration that her invitation by the police for another investigation while the case has been adjourned sine die at the Chief Magistrate Court, Owerri, violates her rights.

She also wants an order restraining the Respondents, from further arresting, pursuing and intimidating her.

“An order directing the 1st 2nd, 4th to 6th Respondents to release forthwith her Infinix Note 7 and lnfinix Note 8 illegally seized by the Respondents during the arrest and torture in Lagos.

“An order awarding damage in the sum of N50 Million to the Applicant for the unlawful arrest, torture, unlawful detention, insult, disgrace, intimidation and the embarrassing treatment meted out on the Applicant.”

In her August 22, 2019 Affidavit in support of her application, Kamalu averred that she and Chima began dating in 1993 while she was in secondary school.

“We dated for 10 years, after which he proposed marriage and we both agreed to settle down as husband and wife. Unfortunately, our parents kicked against our relationship on the ground that we are biologically related and that we were committing incest and could not get married, so I married another man called Gabriel Igbibi,” she said.

The applicant said she reconnected with the lawmaker when she needed assistance to execute a contract she secured and that after she refused his advances, “he raped me.”

“I lodged the case first at New Owerri Police Station wherein he influenced it and I wrote a Petition to the Inspector-General of Police, Force State Quarters, Abuja. The petition was assigned to Zone 9 Police Command, Umuahia, Abia State.

“The 1st Respondent settled the police and they brokered peace between the 1st Respondent and me, wherein he promised to take proper care of me because he cannot withdraw himself from me.

She said following their reconciliation, they resumed their incestuous relationship “fully again”.

Kamalu added: “My husband got wind of the relationship between the 1st respondent and myself,” following which he filed for divorce.

When she informed Chima he allegedly gave her money to hire a lawyer for the case.

“The 1st Respondent promised that if the divorce succeeds, he will be giving me N20 million every six months and also buy me a property in any designated place in Lagos.

“The marriage was dissolved at the Ikeja High Court, Lagos. After the divorce, the 1st Respondent told me that before he will take the relationship serious, I will have to bear a child for him.”

According to her, she took in for him, but had a miscarriage. He then asked her to adopt a baby which would be his and claim that the baby was born in Canada, but that the baby also died.

She further claimed that he made her swear to an oath of loyalty, but she eventually caught him with another woman.

“I became infuriated and he became furious and warned me never to visit him again, that he is no longer interested in the relationship. I reminded him of the oath he forced me to take that no man must have any relationship with me again and the promise to be giving N20m every six months, buy me a property in a choice area, buy a brand new car every six months, which he had never fulfilled.

“I told him that I would tell the whole world how he has ruined my life and deceived me out of my marriage where I had four children.”

She told the court that this was why the lawmaker used the police to arrest her on May 27, 2019 and detained for seven days.

  • Insurgency: Super camps borne out of operational needs, says CDS

The military high command on Monday defended the convert of super camps in the fight against insurgency in the Northeast

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Abayomi Olonisakin said the concept was borne out of operational necessity.

The CDS spoke before going into a closed-door session with the leadership of the House of Representatives.

The House, last Thursday, stepped down a motion by Ifeanyi Momah, titled: “Review of the military strategy of ‘Super Camps’ in the fight against Boko Haram in the North East Zone.”

The mover of the motion had argued that the concept was not well thought out and that it left thousands of citizens exposed to danger.

But Olonisakin said the constantly changing vistas of the war against insurgency made the military to adopt the strategy.

He said: “The super camp concept was borne out of our need to re-strategise to meet changing operational conditions in the Northeast.

“In respect to the security situation in the Northeast, especially Borno State, we’re all aware that the Armed Forces, in collaboration with other security and intelligence agencies, have been contending with insurgency and terrorism for many years now.

“Indeed, the counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency operation in the Northeast predates the administration of His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari.

“Despite the challenges we’re facing, we have made appreciable progress. The Armed Forces continue to restrategise to address changing operational situation and practise of the insurgent terrorists

“We have achieved better intergration of air and land as well as air power as well as greater coordination with other security and intelligence agencies, through regular strategic inputs at the  highest level of command and down to the chain of command.”

He further said: I want to assure the leadership of the House, that we will continue to do all we can to ensure peace and security in our country in line with our constitutional mandate despite the challenges.

“As the representatives of the Nigerian people, we recognise the concernn of the House and indeed the National Assembly on this issue.”

The military top brass however apologised to the House leadership for the inability of the Service chiefs to make last week’s meeting

“I need to add that as the Chief of Defence Staff,  my inability to be here in person last Friday, was due to an equally urgent interaction at the presidency where the chief of army….

According to him, their absence was by no means a deliberate act mearnt to disrespect  the institution of the National Assembly..

He said though they were not able to come, their various chief of operation were present and were capable of answering the questions that would have been put to then.

Earlier, the Speaker of the House, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila , who was at the meeting with relevant committees said the meeting was to find out the state of the war against terrorism and insurgency.

He also said with the budget due in a week or two, there was the need to find out the needs of the armed forces in the prosecution of the anti-insurgency war

An attempt to convene the security meering last week was unsuccessful as tje servide chied were absent and sent representatives.

This made the Speaker very angry and it was subsequently rescheduled for yesterday.

At the session were the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal  Sadique Abubakar; Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas; Lieutenant General Lamidi Adeosun (Chief of Policy and Plans, Army), represented the Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai

  • Any Hope for Young Nigerian Tech Graduates after Massive Andela Sack?

We read in disbelief that Andela, an Africa-focused company that build talented software engineers has disengaged 400 junior engineers in Uganda, Kenya, and Nigeria.

Still more shocking is the fact that the company stated that the reason for the disengagement was to align its talent pool with global market demand.

So, does it mean that companies no longer want junior software Engineers? I mean, so starting a career in IT right now is totally useless? Since no company wants to risk employing a young tech graduate with no experience.

Or, is it that gradually, the tech sector is becoming like others, where experience plays a greater role, instead of technical abilities?

A friend said he was happy that he didn’t waste his time acquiring any ICT skill – because it is clear that the ICT field isn’t lucrative again.

    Is this true?

Now we have to understand what really happened at Andela.

Were those junior software engineers really fired from the company due to the fact nobody wants them again?

    The answer is NO!

    “What then happened?”

You have to understand that Andela runs a unique business model. They train a regular guy with some tech skills and mold him into a professional software engineer.

In a bid to help improve the African tech sector, they increased the number intakes which exceeded the regular number. Unfortunately, TOP COMPANIES who could afford them were not coming for the excess junior engineers at Andela’s disposal.

Instead of wasting talents and getting them underpaid, they were asked to seek for opportunities outside Andela.

    According to Andela’s Nigeria Country Director, Omowale David-Ashiru, he said;

“We have reached an inflection point that has required a change in strategy, which is why we are announcing these changes to our talent strategy.”

    What next for Tech Graduates?

The tech field is still one of the highest paying sector in Nigeria, with Junior Developers/Engineers earning a good income in regular companies. So don’t think the sky is falling after 400 graduates were relieved of their job with Andela.

    Here are some points you should take away;

Andela isn’t only the Tech Company in Nigeria

Yes of truth, working with Andela is a dream come true for most tech developers – because of the high salary structure. But with the recent disengagement, many other companies have opened up their doors to poach available Andela talents they could lay their hands on.

Andela had hardly finish typing the tweet before various firm started showing interest in picking up these junior developers. Majority of them that showed up at Flutterwave Developer Job Fair got placement at other tech startups.

    What does this show?

Tech Talent is Scarce in Nigeria

With lots of tech guys working for Andela, it is causing a lot of shortage for other establishments. Most Developers/Engineers prefer working for Andela, due to their high salary structure.

Companies are looking for Tech talents to come work for them, but the supply is very low. It means that if you have a good knowledge of tech, you are already a hot product in the job market.

Most Tech Guys don’t work for Companies

Isn’t it surprising that ONLY 400 interns were disengaged from a total of FIVE countries?

The last time a company disengaged its staff in Nigeria alone, we counted THOUSANDS of people.

This shows that most of these TECH guys prefer having their own business than working for another person – because it is more lucrative.

Any hope for Beginners in Tech?

Looking at all these, any hope for beginners who are just getting started in the tech field or interested in starting a career in tech?

    The simple answer is YES!

No sector beats the tech sector, and it is one of the highest booming sectors in Nigeria. If you think you have a flair for technology, here are some reason to get started immediately.

    A booming industry

Every company in Nigeria needs tech graduates, which means that there are more than enough jobs for everyone with a tech skill. Well, it now becomes a question of “how much salary”.

    Low competition

Most tech guys prefer to work for themselves or collaborate with each other to launch a big idea. So if you decide to work for a company, you won’t have competitors looking to take your job away from you.

    A good side hustle

Even when you work for a company, your massive idea can be your side hustle. Once it starts paying, you can then leave and set up yourself fully.

Are you now interested in making waves and earning high in the tech industry?

Amaechi spoke on Monday, when he and the Minister of State for Transportation, Gbemi Saraki, led other stakeholders on tour of the project.

He said the Federal Government would also begin a free trial train service between Lagos and Ibadan for commuters.

”Our ambition is that by November we should begin trial of train services between Lagos and Ibadan for free,” the minister said.

He, however, admitted that the pace of the project had been slow, adding that there was the need for the contractor to increase the pace of the project.

Amaechi said: ”They (contractor) need to increase their speed. They reduce their speed within the period that the government dissolved the last cabinet.

“Now that we are back, my colleague, the minister of state, and I resolved to push back the pressure to ensure they stick to the completion timelines.”

The minister disclosed that the double lane speed tracks had been laid up to kilometre 155, adding that where the project was recording challenge now was the completion of the stations, which according to him was impeded because the cabinet was not in place.

“The tracks are no longer the problem, the problem now, is how to get them to finish the stations on time,” he said.

Amaechi disclosed that the contractor, CCECC, had promised to complete all the minor stations in three months, but six months after, they had yet to do so.

The minister added that he would continue to put pressure on the contractor to ensure that all the minor stations were completed in due course.

“We know that by January next year, they are going to finish both the minor and major stations so that we can move on,” Amaechi said.

Speaking on the Railway University and the manufacturing factory projects, Amaechi said while the Ministry of Transportation had secured a date for the factory’s ground breaking ceremony from the Vice President, it was waiting for the President to return to the country to give a date for the ground breaking ceremony for the university project.

He also said the government was waiting on the Chinese government and the China EximBank for the loan for the Ibadan-Kano standard gauge line.

The minister said the Federal Government was ready with its own counterpart funding, but would require the ChinaExim Bank to grant the facility for the project to begin.

Saraki expressed happiness that the Ministry of Transportation was delivering on the vision of President Muhammadu Buhari to make the train the backbone of the nation’s economy.

She said once the speed train fully come on stream, it would be able to unlock the huge potential of the sector to create jobs for teeming Nigerian youths.

Saraki, who supervises the maritime sector of the transportation ministry, said she was determined to work with other stakeholders to unlock the potential and opportunities of the maritime sector.
