  • Yeast infection and your fertility

Yeast infection (otherwise called candidiasis) is as common as anyone can imagine. Yeast is a fungus in similar category as our common mushroom, though the mushroom is much bigger and visible to our naked eyes. The yeast is smaller and less obvious to the untrained observer.

Yet, this infection of candidiasis may first appear as innocent but on a closer look, it does a lot of damage or has potential to do a lot of damage as we shall see below. Yeast could affect anyone: men, women, children, young and adult, depending on the circumstances of the individual. Nonetheless, women in their reproductive age constitute the largest group of people that yeast affects mostly. You as a reader may be surprised why this is so. The reason for the relationship between yeast and women is a matter of hormone and the anatomy of women. The hormones create moist environment in women’s anatomical areas and in particular the vagina and the entrance to vagina, which is otherwise called vulva. It’s these moist anatomical areas that yeast frequently affects. For this reason, yeast infection is very common in pregnant women. From vagina, yeast could also affect other organs of reproduction such as fallopian tubes and uterus.

Still on women, yeast could affect any parts of human skin, especially the armpit and underneath the breasts where the folds of armpit and breasts create another moist and enclosure for the infection to prosper. In children and very ill adults, regardless of age or gender, yeast could affect the mouth, the throat and the gut or the food tract as far as it could go.

As I mentioned above, when a person suffers from low self-defensive capability, yeast could sense an opportunity in low immunity persons. This could occur in individuals who are malnourished as in children that are poorly fed, persons suffering from chronic debilitating illness such as diabetes, AIDS, tuberculosis, and cancers. For this reason, yeast infection has been medically labeled as an opportunistic infection. Why? The reason is that ordinarily and under normal circumstances, candidiasis may not have been found in such sufferers were it not for the bigger illness that exists in the person. In men of reproductive age, yeast could affect the groins and the terminal part of the penis.

How does yeast infection manifest? In women, creamy whitish vagina discharge is well established and recognisable symptom of candidiasis. Another frequent symptom is itching. I have had a patient coming to wake me up at 3a.m. because of severe itching caused by candidiasis. The woman could not sleep because the itching was intolerable. The itching may also lead to soreness or ulceration of the affected areas. Under the breast, the area could be white or discoloured to darkish-white in our brownish-dark skin.  The same goes for infection in armpit.

In children, infection in the mouth is very obvious by thick coating of the tongue extending to the throat. Yeast affecting the mouth could affect any age or any person who suffers severely. In men, itching could be the only symptom affecting the penis and the groin with sometimes patchy white coating of the affected areas.

Complications: The most likely and severest complications in women are pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), which may occur. This could potentially lead to infertility issues. In pregnant women, if left untreated, candidiasis may lead to miscarriage. The logic is simple: pregnancy and infection cannot exist together at the same time and in the same place. One must give way to the other. Disseminated yeast infection in anyone, be it a child or adult, could kill the person. Thus, simple as yeast may look, it’s an infection that requires our utmost attention and treatment without delay.

Treatment: Treatment of uncomplicated yeast infection is simple. The use of common antifungal medications that can be bought over the counter, for a specified duration of time will take care of the infection. In serious conditions, the skills and attention of a qualified physician is required. You should not delay in this regard. Sexual partners of adults should be treated as well.

Prevention: Keeping to good personal hygiene may help. Treatment of sexual partners is also important. Ensuring children and adult consume balanced diets consisting of adequate protein, vitamins, fat, carbohydrates and fruits may keep yeast at bay. Treat any existing underlying diseases such as diabetes and chronic infections.

  • We won’t cause more hardship for Nigerians – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday in Abuja assured Nigerians that the Federal Government will not inflict additional hardship on citizens.

He said it will rather keep seeking ways to ameliorate their sufferings and create a more enabling environment for everyone to thrive.

The President spoke while receiving the new executive of Trade Union Congress (TUC) led by its President, Comrade Quadri Olaleye, at the State House, Abuja.

The President, in a statement by the Senior Special Assistant on Media and publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, said “On fuel prices, I agree with you on the need to eliminate corruption and inefficiencies in the sector. I want to assure you that, as an Administration, we have no intention of inflicting any additional hardship on Nigerians,’’

The Federal Government, he said, remained committed to the implementation of the national minimum wage.

According to him, the inaugural Federal Executive Council meeting on Wednesday focused on the Medium-Term Expenditure Framework, which included discussions around the new minimum wage.

“During our first term, we secured the nation’s territorial integrity and continue to protect the lives and properties of our citizens. We introduced various economic stimulus packages that support businesses and traders at all levels, promoted backward integration programmes especially in the agricultural sector to enhance our food security while creating jobs.

“We embarked on the most ambitious infrastructure development and rehabilitation projects this country has seen in decades. We also introduced the largest Social Investment Program in Sub-Saharan Africa.

“Although these programs and many more successfully lifted Nigeria out of recession, the full impact is yet to be felt. In the next four years, we shall sustain this momentum and by the grace of God, lift millions of Nigerians out of poverty,’’ he said.

President Buhari, who noted that his administration will work hard to improve the livelihood of citizens, said most of the inherited challenges were avoidable, if some previous governments had been keener on investing on infrastructure and human capacity.

“The points you raised are all interconnected. The lack of power and infrastructure due to decades of under-investment led to the closure or inefficient operations of a number of factories across the country. This meant the private sector was unable to create jobs fast enough to cope with our increasing population.

“You will agree with me that, all these challenges and many more were long ago left unattended to, thereby leaving the country in the mired state we inherited. You all will also testify to having seen and experienced what we have put in place as an administration to address these challenges,’’ the President added.

In his remarks, the President of TUC advised the Federal Government to pay more attention to the welfare of Nigerians by avoiding increase of fuel price and ensuring implementation of the National Minimum Wage, which had been delayed by negotiations on the consequential adjustments.

“We are, however, disturbed that the enthusiasm is turning into a nightmare,’’ he said, urging the President to focus on poverty reduction and improving security.

Olaleye assured the President that TUC will support the government as it tackles challenges facing the country.

He commended the President for increase in Internally Generated Revenue, steps taken on the xenophobic attacks on Nigerians and signing of the African Continental Free Trade Agreement.

  • Apologise to Nigerians, FG tells Atiku, PDP

With the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal pronouncement on Wednesday, the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has asked the PDP and its presidential candidate in the last elections to
    apologize to Nigerians.

Mohammed said rather than appealing the ruling of the Tribunal Atiku and PDP should apologise for willfully distracting the Buhari Administration with a frivolous election petition.

In a statement issued in St Petersburg, Russian Federation, on Thursday, the Minister said while the PDP and
its candidate reserve the right to pursue their petition to the highest level, they will be better served by dropping their toga of desperation and realizing that there is a limit to tomfoolery.

”Nigerians are tired of this orchestrated distraction, and will rather wish that the opposition, having lost at the polls and in court, will now join hands with the government to move Nigeria to the
    next level.

”This is more so that the judgement validating the re-election of President Muhammadu Buhari was unanimous that the petition lacked merit, that the petitioners failed to prove any of the grounds upon which their case was anchored and that President Buhari is eminently qualified to contest the poll,” he said.

Alhaji Mohammed said instead of casting aspersion on the judiciary with their poorly-framed reaction to the ruling of the Tribunal, the PDP and its candidate should be thanking their stars that they are not being prosecuted for coming to court with fraudulently-obtained evidence.

”It is intriguing that a party that trumpets the rule of law at every turn will present, in open court, evidence it claimed to have obtained by hacking into a supposed INEC server. Don’t they realize this is a criminal act for which they are liable? Instead of threatening to head to the Supreme Court, driven more by ego than commonsense, they should be sorry for allowing desperation to overwhelm their sense of reasoning. Enough is enough,” he said.

The Minister commended the Tribunal for not only doing justice to the case but for explaining, in painstaking details that lasted hours, how it arrived at its judgement.

”We also thank Nigerians, who voted massively to re-elect President Buhari, for their continued support,” he said

  • Redeemer’s Varsity graduates 379 students

The Redeemer’s University, Ede in Osun State on Thursday graduated 379 students at its 11th convocation ceremony.

Speaking at the event held at the university campus in Ede, the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, advised the youths to face the future with hope and should not to allow the nation’s challenges overwhelm them.

Represented by the Acting Chairman, Board of Trustees of the Redeemers University, Pastor Idowu Iluyomade, the vice president charged the graduands to be focused and face life challenges headlong.

He admonished the graduating students not to join bandwagon of pessimists, “who complain daily about the nations challenges rather than face the challenges and succeed in life.”

The vice president said the world itself is full of distractions “capable of luring those who are not focused away from attaining their goals,” adding that the serious minded ones will take advantage of a lot of opportunities that abound in the nation.

Meanwhile, the best 2018/1019 graduating student of the institution, Mary Opeyemi Dosumu, who is the only child of her parents, secured two automatic employments at the event.

She was offered job appointment as Accountant Trainee by Chairman of the AMNI International Petroleum Development Company, Dr. Tunde Afolabi, a honourary doctoral degree awardee of the university, and the Vice Chancellor of the Redeemer’s University, Prof. Anthony Enisan Akinlo, for the position of Graduate Assistantship.

In his address, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Anthony Enisan Akinlo, who listed many achievements of the institution, urged the 379 graduating students to turn the nation’s challenges to opportunities.

He charged them to maintain self-discipline by conquering self and above all consecrate themselves through a special covenant with God.

He said: “The world is not looking for mediocre but game changers that can transform the rules of engagement. Let all that you have imbibe during the course of your studentship at RUN be your guiding principles that will distinguish you wherever you go now and throughout your lifetime.”

The General Overseer of The Redeem Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, who is also the institution’s Visitor, said the vision of the school is to produce God-fearing entrepreneurs, who are not afraid of starting from the very little level like the church.

According to him; “The Vision and Mission of the University has been put plainly to produce God-fearing, academically, outstanding, and diligent young men and women who are not afraid to start small like the RCCG. The University’s desire and effort to produce Godly professionals in the work place of life informed the emphasis of producing them as entrepreneurs or employers of labour rather than employees, more so in this fast paced socio-economic climate.”

Also on Wednesday in the 11th Convocation lecture of the Redeemer’s University, Ede, Osun State titled “Unleashing Youth Potential : Pathway To Nigeria’s Future,” the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer , Unity Bank Plc, Mrs. Oluwatomi Somefun, advised the youths to stop over-reliance on the governments if they want to be successful in the career paths they may want to choose.

Somefun further advised the youths to be focused and should have vision for themselves.

The chartered banker, who also advised the youth not to pay attention to naysayers but instead focus more on putting their ideas to work, said: “Never wait for the government to do something for you. Its job is to create an enabling environment. Youth don’t have to give up, you have to keep going. When you see your business is outdated, innovate.

“Discovery of your purpose gives you a vision for your life; a vision is a picture of what you want to achieve. It is important to have a clear picture of your dreams and aspirations in life, and articulate them without ambiguity. God himself told us in Habakkuk 2:2 that ” write the vision and make it plain on tablets, that he may run who reads ”

Visioning is one of the most powerful tools God gave to human beings. Your vision gives you passion and provides direction.

Urging the graduands to be more creative, Somefun counseled the youths to cultivate their personal and unique brand for themselves, saying “your personal brand speaks of your uniqueness as an individual. And you are a distinct personality, God’s original, specially created by Him with specific abilities and traits.”

She said the young people should be the driving force and take charge to build the future that Nigeria want, charging them to work collectively and promote entrepreneurship, job creation for the better future of Nigeria.

She continued: “You will want to start a business and you will find people who will tell you that it will not succeed because there is so much competition, more money, more infrastructures, and more resources. Let that not derail you.

She pointed out that there were many young Nigerians recognised and respected abroad because of their success and achievements in their chosen careers, therefore asking the youths to seize the opportunities to innovate and turn their challenges into profitable ventures.

Advising the youths to be determined, flexible and adaptable, she charged the graduating students not to be deceived, saying: “life outside the confines of the school environment is tough and sometimes harsh, hardly a walk in the park. Your values and morals will be tested but I encourage you to be firm, steadfast and be flexible in your thinking, and let your ultimate goals and objectives drive yours action. Difficult roads often lead beautiful destinations.”

  • Four important things to do if you want to retire early

Even with the nature of our society, retiring early is possible and achievable (especially if this has always been your lifelong goal), you only need to be willing to make some sacrifices. Here are four things to do if you want early retirement.

    Avoid spending mindlessly

The most important step in controlling your finances enough to make early retirement possible, is to track your spending. You have to know what you’re spending on and if it’s necessary for you to spend that much on it, or even spend on it at all. Know how you spend, determine necessary expenses and focus your efforts on reducing or eliminating negligible or unnecessary expenses.

    Stop lifestyle inflation

Try to avoid living at the maximum standard your income allows. Find a middle point and contently build your life around that, while you save and wisely invest the rest to further increase your earnings. If your income increases, try not to over boost your spending and put a reasonable portion of the extra money into savings. You can also apply this strategy to other surplus money like bonuses, and other small windfalls. This will benefit you far more than buying the latest gadgets and travelling to the most exotic locations all the time.

    Go home-made

Opt for home-made food, as opposed to eating out all the time. If you’re skeptical about just how financially beneficial this strategy is, give it a shot for a month and see the results. You can even save some more money if you know how to negotiate well for groceries and food stuffs at the market. In addition to the financial benefits of going home-made, there’s also the health benefit of eating fresher and healthier meals.

Stop trying to please your friends

This is one of the biggest money wasters and the greatest enemy to early financial independence. Keeping up with the Joneses and trying to live up to your friend’s standard can end up not only robbing you of a chance at early financial independence, but it can also mess you up financially. Avoid going out all the time, spending in places you never intended to spend in, and spending lavishly on things that you could care less about because of so-called friends. Stick with friends with the same financial mindset as yours, who will contribute positively to your goal of achieving early financial freedom. You’ll be better off for it.
