    Police arrest three suspects for allegedly raping minor in Jos

    The Police Command in Plateau has arrested three men for allegedly raping a 14-year-old girl.

    Presenting the suspects to newsmen in Jos, the Commissioner of Police, Mr Undie Adie, said all the suspects hailed from Angwan Rogo of Jos North Local Government Area of the state.

    According to Adie, the incident took place on Jan. 23 and the case was reported to the Angwan Rogo Division of the command by the mother of the victim on Jan 26.

    He said that the suspects conspired with one, Yahaya, and dragged the girl into his room where they all raped her.

    “They dragged her and when she became unconscious, they raped her mercilessly.

    “On receipt of the report, our detectives swung into action and arrested the suspects, except Yahaya, who is still at large.

    “The suspects have confessed to have committed the crime and would be charged to court as soon as practicable, ” he said.

    The commissioner said the command would intensify action to arrest the fourth suspect still at a large.

    Police confirm seven killed in Nasarawa attack

    The Nasarawa State Police Command on Tuesday confirmed the killing of seven persons in a night on Kadarko, a village in Keana Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.
    According to Mr Kennedy Idirisu, its Public Relations Officer, the victims were killed by gunmen that invaded the village on Monday.
    He described the incident as “saddening”, saying that a special team, led by a senior officer, had been deployed to the area to forestall a recurrence.

    The Reporter reports that Kadarko village had come under severe attacks lately, with cattle rustlers killing 73 cows on Sunday.
    Two herdsmen were reported missing after the rustlers’ invasion.
    The news also reports that Alhaji Ahmed Bello, the Commissioner of Police in Nasarawa, visited the village on Sunday and assured the herders that investigation had commenced toward apprehending the rustlers.

    Two senior UN officials in Somalia to help tackle food insecurity

    Two senior UN officials arrived in Mogadishu on Tuesday to underline the immense challenge of persistent food insecurity and the new approach to addressing it.

    Under Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Mark Lowcock and UN Development Programme (UNDP) Administrator Achim Steiner will also meet with senior government officials, humanitarian and development partners.

    “The UN principals will highlight the need to continue life-saving humanitarian assistance as an urgent priority,

    while simultaneously addressing the root causes of Somalia’s recurring humanitarian crises and encouraging investment in the untapped potential of the country,” the UNDP said in a statement on Tuesday.

    The Horn of Africa nation averted a famine in 2017 when the government and partners heeded early warning reports and ramped up the response.

    “The drought and ongoing conflict, coupled with the resultant displacement of a million people last year, has left six million people in need of humanitarian assistance,” said the UNDP.

    The UN agency said recurrent drought and subsequent famine risk have become a devastating and unsustainable cycle in Somalia, noting that 4.5 billion dollars have been spent on emergency responses to save lives in the years since the 2011 famine.

    Al-Makura tasks students on discipline, hard work

    Gov. Tanko Almakura of Nasarawa State, has urged students in the state to be disciplined and hardworking in order to justify the huge investment their parents make on their education.

    Almakura, gave the advice on Friday while addressing the students of Government Secondary School, Nyanya Gbagi, Karu Local Government Area of the state.

    He charged them to face their studies and excel in their academic pursuit and shun laziness and other vices, adding that only hard work paid.

    He advised them to read hard and be obedient to their parents and teachers in order to excel in their academic pursuits for the betterment of the society.

    The governor restated his administration’s commitment to uplifting the standard and quality of education in the state.

    Almakura said that his administration had invested so much in the education sector in order to provide quality education to children in the state.

    According to him, education is the best legacy any government could leave for its citizens.

    “The essence of all our efforts is to provide education to all children irrespective of their status in the society as my administration has given topmost priority to the education sector.

    Almakura told the students that they were entitled to enjoy all the support and patronage of government for them to be able to become the best they could in life.

    The governor called on the residents to continue to live in peace and tolerate one another, irrespective of their ethnic, religious and political affiliations.

    “Peace is paramount and a necessary requirement for the development of any society,” he said.

    Man jailed three years for stealing neigbhour’s property

    A Mararaba Upper Area Court, Nasarawa State, on Friday sentenced a 25-year-old man, Maharbi Lafia, to three years imprisonment for stealing neigbhour’s property worth N716,000.

    Lafia, a resident of City College, Mararaba, had pleaded guilty to a two-count charge of criminal breach of trust and theft and begged for mercy.

    The judge, Ibrahim Shekarau, sentenced Lafia to 18 months imprisonment on each of the two counts or an option of N10, 000 fine each.

    He ordered the convict to produce the entire items he stole.

    The prosecutor, Sgt. Godwin Ejeh, had told the court that one Alilara Hassan, reported the matter at the Divisional Police Station, Mararaba, on January 11.

    “The complainant alleged that the convict stole his property worth N716,000, which he entrusted to him sometime in November, 2017.

    “The property include, two generators, valued at N500,000, a refrigerator, valued at N120,000, a gas cylinder, valued at N30,000, and 22 empty bottle crates valued at N66,000,” Ejeh said.

    He said that the offences contravened Sections 312 and 287 of the Penal Code.

    Police advise Kwankwaso to shelve Kano visit

    The Kano State Police Command,  has advised Sen. Rabi’u Kwankwaso to suspend his proposed visit to Kano State on Jan. 30.

    The State Commissioner of Police, Mr Rabiu Yusuf, gave the advice while briefing newsmen in Kano, on Friday.

    He said, the advice was necessary in view of the tension generated by the planned visit, among the people of the state.

    According toYusuf, “There is no doubt, the Senator as a citizen of this country has the constitutional right of association, assembly, and above all, movement.

    “However, credible Information at the disposal of the command reveals that the proposed visit has generated palpable fears in the minds of the people of Kano State’’, he said.

    He said, there was apprehension among the general populace, including the tendency to hijack the visit by some disgruntled elements and miscreants.

    He hinted on the urgent need by the police command to ensure that peace prevailed in the state.]

    “Therefore, any action or inaction by any person or group of persons that may jeopardize the relative peace the state is currently enjoying must be averted.

    He assured that, the command would provide a level playing ground for all politicians, to carry out their political activities, without fear of molestation or intimidation.

    Almakura warns against encroachment on govt’s land

    The Nasarawa State Government on Friday warned individuals and groups against encroaching on lands that belong to the state government in the interest of peace and the socio-economic development of the state.

    Gov. Tanko Almakura, gave the warning when he visited Nyanya Gbagi Primary and Secondary Schools, Karu in Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.

    The Reporter  reports that the school land is gradually being taken over by welders, panel beaters and car dealers among others.

    He said that he would not fold his hands and watch individuals encroach on the government land for their selfish interests and urged them to desist from doing so in the interest of peace and development.

    Almakura said his administration was committed to the development of the education sector and provision of basic infrastructure such as roads, culverts, health facilities, water and electricity among others.

    He vowed that the state government would sanction any individual or group, who encroached on its land so as to serve as deterrent to others.

    “It is clear sabotage for people to encroach on government land for their self-interest knowing well that the land is for the purpose of locating development projects that will benefit the people.

    “It is in view of this that, I want to advise those encroaching on government land to desist from doing so in their own interest, in the interest of peace and socio-economic development of the state,” he said.

    Almakura also called on the people of the area and Nigerians to jealously guard government’s projects and property sited in their domain in order to ensure speedy development of the country.

    Kaduna allocates N3.8bn for new master plan

    Kaduna State Government has allocated N3.8 billion to the state’s Geographic Information Service ( KADGIS ) for capital projects in 2018.

    The Reporter reports that the figure is contained in the state’s 2018 budget obtained from the state Planning and Budget Commission.

    According to the document, a total of N3.9 billion was allocated to the agency out of which N3.8 billion would be spent on capital project and N111.8 million for recurrent.

    A breakdown of the budget shows that N1.2 billion would be spent on design, installation, management and transfer of KADGIS and N397.8 million on survey and demarcation of news layouts.

    N800 million was also allocated for recovery of public Lands and compensation, while preparation of development of the Batch’ B’ Millennium City in the Eastern Sector of Kaduna got N451.2 million.

    The document added that N417.6 million would be spent on assessment for compensation for land and economic trees for four layouts of 500 hectare each in the eastern sector.

    It also said that preparation of 12 new layouts across the state would gulp N263 million, while N325 million would go to systematic property registration programme.

    “N255.5 would be spent on review of Zaria, Sabon-Gari and preparation of 18 other master plans and mappings,’’ it added.

    Trump says ready to apologise for retweeting UK right-wing group’s videos

    U.S. President Donald Trump said in an interview with the UK ITV broadcaster, partially released on Friday, that he was prepared to apologise for his retweets of UK right-wing group’s anti-Muslim videos.

    In November, Trump retweeted several unverified videos, originally posted on Twitter by Jayda Fransen, the deputy leader of the far-right Britain First movement, which claimed to show violent acts committed by what the group considered Islamists.

    “If you’re telling me they’re horrible racist people, I would certainly apologise if you would like me to do that. I knew nothing about that,” Trump said, referring to Britain First.

    Trump emphasised that he was a great supporter of the UK, adding that he did not want to cause any difficulty for the country.

    The U.S. president explained that he had retweeted the videos because he is a “big believer in fighting radical Islamic terror,” which was depicted on those videos.

    Trump’s retweets of Britain First’s videos provoked criticism by many UK and U.S. politicians and public figures.

    Particularly, UK Prime Minister Theresa May called Trump’s move to retweet the videos the wrong thing to do.

    Be conscious of your voting rights, NGO tells Christians

    A non-governmental organisation known as Church Must Vote has appealed to Christians across the country to be conscious of their voting rights in elections.

    Mr Ikechukwu Nmor, the Communication Manager of the group, made the appeal on Thursday in Abuja at a news conference.

    He called on Christians to come out en masse and participate in the 2019 general elections and beyond.

    He said that research had shown that Christians had not been participating in previous elections as they ought to have been doing.

    “Therefore, as the 2019 general elections approach, it is important that the elections and the outcome reflect a representation and inclusive decision of all demographics, age, gender and beliefs.

    “Most Christians in Nigeria hide behind the mask of praying for the nation and abstain from the arena of politics, yet the church remains the most vocal critic of the government.

    “It is not enough to pray behind closed doors and wait in sheer optimism for change or progress to be achieved.

    “So, we say to our brothers and sisters in the Christian faith to vote and pray,’’ he said.

    Nmor, therefore, urged Christians to get their Permanent Voter Cards and turnout en masse to vote in elections.
