    NSSF-backed Wamufat Youth Foundation’s sports clinic begins

    Nigeria School Sport Federation (NSSF) in collaboration with Wamufat Youth Community Development Foundation (WYCDF) yesterday kicked off an ambitious seven-day Youth Sports Clinic in Ogun State.

    The inaugural sports camp will run from August 10 to 16 at the imposing Agroterra Sports Complex in Joga-Orile, near Abeokuta, Ogun State.

    The event is graced by HRH Olowu of Owu, Oba Saka Matemilola, Abepa of Joga, HRH Oba Dapo Jacob, chairman, Agroterra, Abdulrashid Afonja, Ogun state Commissioner of Sports Hon. Wasiu Odiaka, to mention but few.

    Over 600 students and Game Masters from the Southwest states of Ogun, Lagos, Oyo, Ekiti, Osun, and Ondo will be taking part in the camp, which combines sports training, education with mentorship and personal development.

    At the opening ceremony  heralding the boot camp, sponsor’s representative Fatimoh Mohammed, said the sporting event  aims to empower young people through structured sports activities, values-based coaching, and wellness education as the  programme will bring together coaches, games masters, facilitators, and volunteers to instil discipline, teamwork, and healthy living in participants.

    The former athlete who won gold for Ogun state at the 1998 Sports Festival, before relocating to the U.S, said the sports camp if her own way of giving back to her root.

    She said: “The WYCDF Youth Sports Clinic represents a significant investment in Nigeria’s youth development, offering young people in Ogun State and surrounding areas an opportunity to develop both athletic abilities and essential life skills in a supportive, structured environment.”

     She added that the initiative aligns with WYCDF’s broader mission to use sports as a tool for positive change, especially in underserved communities.

    “This is not just about games or physical fitness — it’s about building confidence, character, and community,” she added.

    President of the NSSF, Olabisi Joseph, commended WYCDF for initiating the programme, assuring that the federation is fully on ground to provide full support to ensure its success.

    She emphasized that the camp aligns with the International School Sports Federation (ISF) ideals of nurturing well-rounded individuals.

    “I’m excited to see the these young ones who would be leaders of tomorrow. It is a mix of sport, education and culture. We are excited about this initiative, which promotes grassroots sports development and supports our strategic agenda, IMPACTS. This agenda focuses on clinics and camps that teach foundational techniques in sports such as athletics, basketball, football, golf, table tennis, tennis, and Ayo,” Joseph said.

    Also on ground is former Super Eagles players; Mutiu Adepoju,  Tajudeen Disu, and decorated Nigerian athlete Mary Onyali-Omagbemi, who are among carefully selected mentors of the event. The others are former Super Eagles winger Dr.  Felix Owolabi and Yusuf Ali.

    Disu said he’s impressed with the organisers of the catch them young clinic.

    “This is the way to go in our sports development from the grassroots. I’m happy to be part of it. I will be sharing my experiences with the youths and most importantly teach them valuable lessons on how to be successful athletes.”

    According to the organizers, the goal is to inspire students to pursue excellence not only in sports but also in education.

    Students from the six South West states of Nigeria are set to participate in the inaugural sports camp organized by the Wamufat Youth Community Development Foundation (WYCDF), in collaboration with the Nigeria School Sport Federation (NSSF).

    The seven-day camp will run from August 10 to 16, 2025, at the Agroterra Sports Complex in Joga-Orile, near Abeokuta, Ogun State. Over 600 students and Game Masters from Ogun, Lagos, Oyo, Ekiti, Osun, and Ondo are expected to take part in the camp, which combines sports training, education with mentorship and personal development.

    In a statement released by the foundation, preparations are in top gear for the event, which aims to empower young people through structured sports activities, values-based coaching, and wellness education. The programme will bring together coaches, games masters, facilitators, and volunteers to instil discipline, teamwork, and healthy living in participants.

    The initiative aligns with WYCDF’s broader mission to use sports as a tool for positive change, especially in underserved communities. Throughout the camp, participants will engage in daily athletics training, motivational sessions, sports drills, mentoring, and leadership development workshops.

    “This is not just about games or physical fitness — it’s about building confidence, character, and community,” said a spokesperson for the foundation.

    The camp has received strong backing from local leaders and members of the Nigerian diaspora, who see it as a model for sustainable youth development.

    Former athletes who excelled both in sports and academics have been invited to mentor participants.

    According to the organizers, the goal is to inspire students to pursue excellence not only in sports but also in education.

    “We’ve identified former athletes who were household names during their active years and who have gone on to succeed academically and professionally. Their presence will help reinforce the message that sports and education can go hand in hand,” the spokesperson added.

    In addition to the student participants, over 150 game masters, sports officials, and coaches will be trained during the camp. Sessions will cover modern sports techniques, anti-doping awareness, health education, safeguarding, and other relevant topics.

    NSSF National Swimming Championships begins  in Lagos

    The highly anticipated National Swimming Championships, organized by the Nigeria School Sport Federation (NSSF), will commence  today (June 24),  at the National Stadium in Surulere, Lagos. 

    The two-day event will see hundreds of students from both public and private schools across the country compete for top honours.

    This year’s tournament is a collaborative effort involving Dynaspro Sports Promotion—renowned for its premier private inter-school swimming competitions—and the Nigeria Aquatic Federation. The initiative aims to discover and nurture young swimming talents who could represent Nigeria on the international stage.

    Dr. Oba Funsho Usman, Secretary General of the NSSF, highlighted the growing enthusiasm among students, which led to the inclusion of private schools in the competition. He noted that several standout swimmers from the 22nd National Sports Festival in Ogun State will also be participating.

    “We’ve seen remarkable performances from students at the last National Sports Festival, where they earned medals for their states. To ensure we identify the best talents, we’ve expanded the tournament to include private schools,” Usman said. 

    “With the technical expertise of the Nigeria Aquatic Federation and the dynamic input from Dynaspro, we’re expecting record-breaking performances and the emergence of new swimming stars.”

    All participating teams are scheduled to arrive on Monday, June 23.

    Registration  for  all the participating  holds early this morning as the competition begin in earnest  while the finals are  set for tomorrow,  June 25. Winners will receive medals and prizes, both individually and as part of their teams.

    NSSF, LASUBEB launch  National School Board Games

    In a bid to unearth talents from the grassroots and encourage mass participation in school sports, the Nigeria School Sport Federation (NSSF) and Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (LASUBEB)  will be  organizing the National School Board Games.

    Chess will be the pilot event, taking place from Monday, February 10 to Tuesday, 11 in Lagos.

    The LASUBEB Hall in Maryland, Lagos, will host the two-day tournament, featuring primary and secondary students competing in individual rapid and blitz chess tournaments.

    In a statement issued by the Secretary General of NSSF, Oba Funsho Usman, he said, “This initiative aims to foster intellectual development, critical thinking, strategic skills, and sportsmanship among school children while promoting healthy competition and camaraderie. We encourage your state to select and prepare your best representatives to compete in this pivotal event.”

    The events will feature categories for U-9, U-12, U-15, and U-18, with outstanding students expected to represent Nigeria at international tournaments later in the year.

    NSSF President Olabisi Joseph highlighted that the partnership with LASUBEB is aimed at identifying talents and encouraging mass participation in school sports across the country.

     “We are excited to collaborate with LASUBEB in organizing this year’s National School Board Games. The competition provides an excellent platform for pupils to showcase their talents, develop essential life skills, and represent their states in future sporting events. We hope to unearth talents that will represent the country in international tournaments. Chess is a sport that can help students intellectually, and organizing such games is a continuation of classroom learning while also fostering friendships among students,” she added.

    Executive Chairman of LASUBEB, Dr. Hakeem Shittu, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, emphasizing that sports play a crucial role in the holistic development of pupils. He added that the Board has been committed to promoting sports alongside academics in public primary schools.

     “We recognize that fostering a balance between intellectual and physical growth is essential for shaping well-rounded individuals. This collaboration with the Nigeria School Sport Federation will further strengthen our efforts in providing opportunities for our pupils to excel not just academically but also in sports,” Dr. Shittu said.
