    NSCDC dispels rumours of recruitment

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps ( NSCDC ) has dispelled rumours that the Corps was “recruiting underground” and carrying out replacement exercise.

The Corps Public Relations Officer, Mr Emmanuel Okeh, said this in a statement in Abuja.

Okeh said the Commandant-General (CG) of the Corps, Mr Abdullahi Muhammadu, had urged  job seekers and the general public to disregard the rumour.

Muhammadu said the false information was a gimmick being peddled by fraudsters to defraud unsuspecting applicants of their hard earned money.

He noted that a number of unemployed Nigerian youths had shown interest in enlisting in the Corps.

“And this has attracted some dubious individuals who have resorted to spreading false news and sending text messages to them on non-existing recruitment and replacement exercises,” he said.

The NSCDC CG stated categorically that the Corps would advertise its existing vacancies before the end of the year for interested candidates to apply.

This, he said, would be done as soon as fund was made available to the corps.

He said that the documentation and data capturing exercise for personnel presently going on at the State Commands of the Corps nationwide was being misconstrued by criminally minded individuals to mean recruitment or replacement exercise.

He said further that the fraudsters were all out to take the advantage of the ongoing exercise to drive home their aim of defrauding unsuspecting Nigerians.

“That due to the forthcoming promotion exercise, the Corps is only issuing old letters of appointment and promotion to personnel who merited it.

“But for administrative reasons they were unable to receive their letters in the last exercise conducted and it is expedient for them to document at this point in time due to the forthcoming promotion exercise,” he said.

The CG, therefore, advised applicants to exercise patience and wait for the appropriate time the Corps would advertise its existing vacancies in major National Newspapers.

Man arrested for attempting to commit suicide over N50,000

Security operatives in Ogun have arrested a man who allegedly attempted to commit suicide over his inability to refund a N50,000 ‘loan.

The man  was arrested by  the Anti-Vandal Team of  Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Ogun Command, while he was trying to  hang himself  in a bush on Ayetoro Road, Abeokuta.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) learnt that the man had tied a rope to a tree and was about hanging himself when a member of the NSCDC team saw him.

The man, a 34-year old father of five, later told newsmen that  he worked with Traffic Compliance and  Enforcement Agency (TRACE) in Ogun but was sacked.

He explained that his inability to perform his responsibility as the head of the family led  him to attempt suicide .

He added that his failure to pay the ‘loan from LAPO,  a private micro-credit lending organisation, forced him to take the  decision to take his life.

“I am a 200 level drop-out of Federal College of Education, Osiele, I dropped  out because I could not get financial assistance to continue.

“Due to the health problem of my child in 2008, I had  to drop out  so that I could  have some money to take care of my sick child.

“But, we later lost the child in 2009 because we were unable to pay some hospital bills after people had  helped us in raising money for the surgery.

“I was duped  by some people and they even threatened  me which made me to leave Abeokuta for Akwa-Ibom state.

‘’It was when I came back after a year that I discovered I had been sacked from TRACE.

“I am frustrated because am owing a lot of people ranging from house bill to  electricity bill and some other bills.

“I am ashamed of myself because am not a responsible man, I cannot cater for my family as a head.

“The LAPO officials  have used OPC (Odua Peoples Congress) to arrest my wife because of the money, if not for the help of my pastor.

” Am just frustrated because I have to pay N3,000 every Friday and I am presently jobless. And I still have like N24,000 to balance  .

“What added to my conclusion to commit suicide was due to my inability to refund the ‘LAPO’ loan I collected when I wanted to start my tricycle business.

” The officials  of the LAPO have  been giving my family  tough times  for sometimes now because, I cannot afford to be repaying N3,000 every Friday, “he said.

He, however, said he regretted his action and wanted a second chance in life./

“I wish to go back to school; I want the government to help me with a job that can cater for my family and other things that are important, ” the man said.

Meanwhile, the Public Relations Officer of NSCDC, Ogbonnaya Dyke   described it as a crime against the state for someone to try to take his life.

Dyke  added that the suspect would be handed over to the police, after the NSCDC Intelligence Unit had concluded its work.

“Since the matter is under our Crisis Management Team, we have to swing into action to address the situation.

“Necessary actions will be taken by the Corps in addressing the situation. He is going to be handed over to the police after our intelligence Unit has done its work, ” he said.

    …Arrests suspects

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Bayelsa State Command, has intercepted stolen petroleum products conveyed in a vehicle belonging to the Ministry of Mines and Steel Development.

It was gathered that the vehicle, a Toyota Hilux van, which was used by the suspects to beat security checkpoints, was rounded up on Thursday in Yenagoa, by the anti-vandal team of NSCDC.

One of the suspects identified as Philip Tuma confessed that he worked in the ministry and was allowed by the ministry’s authority to keep the vehicle with registration number 28A-36FG in his care.

He, however, said his boss in the ministry knew nothing about his illegal mission of using the vehicle to transport stolen oil.

Tuma said he embarked on the dirty deal in connivance with his younger brothers, who were idle at home following the ongoing strike of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

“I work in the ministry and was given the bus to keep as a worker. My boss has no knowledge of what I have done. This is my first time.

“My younger ones, who are at home because of the ASUU strike convinced me to follow them because they needed money for their fees”, he said.

Also, a female suspect, Mercy Ekereme, paraded for her alleged involvement in illegal bunkering, said she was arrested by NSCDC while trying to convey the products from Ogbia to Yenagoa.

Ekereme, who hailed from Delta State, said she was once a hawker of sachet water but was introduced into the oil theft business by an unnamed woman.

“The woman who introduced me into this oil business saw me selling pure water and said my pure water business was embarrassing. She helped me to get a loan and linked me with a dealer who gives me products to sell.

“I got the product and decided to take them to Yenagoa. I met a man who came to buy fuel into a Hilux vehicle for his boss. We agreed on a fare and he decided to carry the products to Yenagoa. But we were arrested at Okaki”, she said.

Speaking shortly after destroying some of the impounded products, the Deputy Commandant, NSCDC, Mr. Chikere Isidore, said the suspects would be prosecuted.

“We are always in their trail and each time we intercept them, we arrest and prosecute them. You can see the suspects carried some of their products in a van of a known ministry to escape arrest. But they failed. Out men are always on the lookout”, he said.

He said some of the impounded products were burnt because they were abandoned by suspects, who ran away on sighting operatives of NSCDC.

He, however, said that other products at the command were arrested with their owners and were used as exhibits in court.

The commandant added that the suspect collected N1.3 million from three other job seekers.

Bashir-Kano further said  the pastor, who came under pressure from the victims,  later  died of  heart-related ailment in March  after realising that he had been defrauded by the suspect

He said the suspect confessed to the crime, adding that he would be charged to court as soon as investigation to ascertain other accomplices on the matter was concluded.

The commandant advised members of the public, especially job seekers, to be wary of scammers and follow due process in their quest to secure employment.

The suspect, on his part,  told newsmen that he was dismissed from the army in 2014 for professional misconduct.

Buhari welcome rally shuts down Ado-Ekiti

…APC, Civil Society groups slam Fayose for “Death Wish”

Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, was at a standstill for about two hours on Monday as residents under the aegis the Coalition of Civil Society groups staged a solidarity rally to weclome President Muhammadu Buhari back from his medical vacation.

The coalition which includes the All Progressives Congress (APC), Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP), labour leaders, youths, artisans, students, market women, commercial drivers and other interest groups slammed Governor Ayo Fayose for “wishing the President dead and making comments that could set the country on fire.”

The rally which started at about 9.00 am at Okeyinmi Roundabout proceeded to Ijigbo before terminating at Mobil area in the city. Many of those who participated in the rally carried placards with various inscriptions.

Some of the placards read: “Welcome Back Buhari, Shame On Fayose,” “On Buhari We Stand, Corruption Must Go,” “The Lion Is Finally Back Home,” “Fayose, You Are A Disappoinment To Ekiti People,” “Fayose Must Commit Suicide Now As Promised,” “Welcome Back, Baba, African Champion of War Against Corruption,” among others.

The rally which was supervised by officers and men of the Nigeria Police, Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) caused a traffic snarl on the major highway in the city.

Protest leaders who took turns to address the people expressed satisfaction with the Saturday’s return of Buhari to the country saying his return will add bite to the anti-corruption crusade and economic recovery.

Ekiti APC Chairman, Chief Olajide Awe, who was represented by his deputy, Mrs. Kemisola Olaleye, said Buhari’s return has exposed what he called “the unending lies of Fayose” who he said never wished the President to come back home alive.

Awe who accused Fayose of playing God on the health of President advised the governor to emulate his Rivers State counterpart Nyesom Wike whom he said displayed maturity by joining other governors to welcome Buhari despite belonging to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

He said: “God has put Fayose to shame on Buhari, God has silenced him for his lies on the President’s health. We appreciate the people of Ekiti State for their good wishes and prayers for our President throughout the time he was away.

“Anybody wishing Buhari dead will go before him, we rejoice with our President that he arrived safely and this has put an end to all the lies of Fayose.

“We urge Fayose to honour his promise, let him be man enough to commit suicide if Buhari returns alive as he had earlier promised.

“Ekiti people are tired of is one-day-one-trouble government and one-day-one-propaganda government and we want to assure our people that Fayose’s day of reckoning is very near.”

Coordinator of Progressive Youth League (PYL), Adeoye Aribasoye, berated Fayose for “raising false alarm” on the health of President by threatening to release eleven damaging pictures of Buhari on life support.

Aribasoye: “God is greater than men, Fayose said he has eleven damaging pictures of Buhari. We want the whole world to know that whatever he says does not represent the view of Ekiti people.”

Labour leader, Kolawole Olaiya, urged Buhari to probe how the proceeds of Paris Club refunds to Ekiti was spent by Fayose regretting that workers are suffering.

“Olaiya said: “We want President Buhari to revisit the issue of the Paris Club refunds to Ekiti State. Local government workers in Ekiti have not received salaries for about nine months.”

CNPP Chairman Tunji Ogunlola said: “Nigeria’s collective destiny cannot be aborted by a tiny group of crooks whose survival depend on the looting of our commonwealth.

“It is on this strength that we believe the President’s return presents a fresh hope for the accomplishment of our collective dream for a great nation as he settles down to work.”
