  • Eight injured in another Ibadan building collapse

    A two-storey building under construction on Tuesday collapsed in Ibadan, injuring eight persons.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the building located on Eleyele road in Jericho area of Ibadan collapsed at about 4.pm.

    Speaking with NAN, one of the bricklayers at the site, Mr Kazeem Adebayo, said concrete casting on a portion of the building had started when it gave way.

    Adebayo said that a portion of the building began to give way at about 3.30 pm and the attention of the site engineer was drawn to the development.

    He alleged that the engineer ordered them to continue work only for the building to collapse shortly afterwards, injuring those working close to the collapsed portion.

    An official of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Dada Abinmbola, told NAN that nobody died in the incident while the injured had been taken to Jericho Specialist Hospital for treatment.

    Mr Olatunji Bolu, a representative of the Architect Registration Council of Nigeria, said the body was still investigating the cause of the incident while the outcome would be made public.

    NAN reports that the task force of the Oyo State Bureau of Physical Planning and Development Control had already sealed the building while security agents were sighted keeping vigil at the site.

    It would be recalled that a two-storey building had collapsed in the Sogoye area Ibadan on March 15.

  • 2,585 security officers deployed for Easter in Niger

    To ensure a hitch free Easter celebration, the Nigerian Police and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Niger state has disclosed that they had deployed 2,585 officers and men across the state.

    Speaking to newsmen in Minna, the Niger state Police Public Relations Officers (PPRO), Mohammad Abubakar, said that the Command had deployed 1,335 of its officers.

    He said that strategies have been mapped out to ensure there is no breakdown of law and order in the state.

    “We have mapped out strategies to ensure adequate security in the state, particularly at churches and recreational centres. During this period, there is always increase in human and vehicular traffic and we are not leaving any stone unturned in ensuring safety of citizen.

    “Our men will also comb and raid criminal hide out during the period to ensure that miscreants don’t take the advantage of the festive period to harass citizens.”

    The Niger state Public Relations Officer of the NSCDC, Ibrahim Yahaya said that 1,250 NSCDC personnel have been deployed across the state.

    “Normally, any festive period like this, we do deploy personnel to sure peaceful celebration. The Commandant had already directed the deployment of personnel in worship centres and worship places for the safety of the citizens.”

    He said that the officers were drawn from Armed Squad Unit, Operations, Counter Terrorism Unit adding that Department of Intelligence and Investigation will be deployed to all black spots across the states.

     

  • Guard kills colleague, shoots Korean staff

    An officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) guarding the Lagos Deep Offshore Logistics (LADOL) Free Zone, Mr. Innocent Oshemi, has shot and killed another NSCDC personnel.

    He also wounded a Korean staff working at the fabrication and integration yard of the Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) located in the free zone.

    The armed security guard went on a rampage around the SHI-MCI yard on Monday, killing his colleague during an argument and shooting a Korean SHI-MCI employee operating a crane within the yard at the time

    According to eyewitness report, the severally wounded Korean was not involved in the original argument between the gunman and his colleague.

    After killing his colleague at about 1.53 pm, the NSCDC officer made his way towards the exit of the SHI-MCI yard but was confronted by guards and other Korean SHI-MCI employees, who prevented from leaving the yard.

    Their bravery prevented the gunman from inflicting further harm on other employees within the free-zone.

    The gunman was taken into custody by Apapa police.

    The gunman, who was supplied to LADOL Free Zone by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, was tasked with the responsibility of defending the Samsung yard from any external attack.

    The Korean employee, who was taken to hospital, underwent several hours of surgery, having suffered serious and life-changing injuries.

    Some workers at the free zone, who witnessed the incident, blamed it on poor management of LADOL as the Free Zone operator.

    “LADOL armed guards are supposed to be properly trained to protect Nigerian and foreign workers.

    ‘’SHI-MCI had previously argued against having armed guards at the yard as it posed unnecessary risk to employees due to insufficient training of guards,” said a female employee who asked not to be named.

    “It is vital that those responsible for such a serious failing that has resulted in death and serious injury are held to account.

    “This was a violent act in a free zone, which is supposed to be a safe zone for foreign nationals, investors and Nigerian workers conducting their daily business.

    “Zone operators like LADOL should have measures in place to ensure the safety and security of all their subleases at the zone and if those measures fail there should be contingencies,” another eyewitness said.

    In a statement on Tuesday, Samsung Heavy Industries Nigeria confirmed one of its Korean employees has been critically injured after being shot by a guard, adding that it has arranged expert medical care for this employee.

    “We give thanks to the quick-thinking and bravery of its employees who apprehended the security operative.

    “Samsung will conduct a full investigation and demands answers from LADOL as to how this employee was screened, and what protection they can offer to workers within the LADOL Free Zone who are now extremely concerned for their safety and welfare.

    “Samsung is working with the International SOS service and the Korean embassy in Nigeria to ensure that proper medical care is provided to its employee and that his family has all the support they need.

    ‘’We have already started our own investigation into what happened. We will be encouraging the Nigerian authorities and the Korean embassy to commence a full and thorough investigation into this terrible incident,” the statement added.

    Meanwhile, SHI-MCI excused all its employees for work from yesterday and until further notice.

    “SHI-MCI plans to issue a claim of damages and will request compensation on behalf of the victim as well as commercial loss,” the company added.

    Reacting in a statement, the Head of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Abdullahi Gana, explained a Civil Defence officer opened fire ‘in error’ at the logistics base, ”leaving multiple casualties”.

    He later clarified that the officer, who was not immediately identified, shot and killed one of his colleagues at the base.

    “Also a Korean man who was present sustained gunshot wounds and is currently hospitalised.”

    Gana who sympathised with the victims, promised the incident would be investigated and legally handled.

  • Mark seeks justice for murdered NSCDC officer

    Former Senate President, Senator David Mark, Thursday urged the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Abubakar Adamu Mohammed to investigate and prosecute police officers who allegedly murdered a Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) officer in Abuja on Wednesday.

    A two-star NSCDC officer, Superintendent Oga Jumbo Ochigbo was allegedly beaten to death by policemen at a checkpoint along Nyanja-Abuja road for alleged traffic offence in front of his wife and two kids.

    He was said to be taking his kids to school on Wednesday morning when the incident occurred.

    Mark in a statement on the incident in Abuja by his media assistant, Paul Mumeh, urged the IGP to do all that is needed to unravel the remote and immediate cause of Jumbo Ochigbo’s death in the hands of policemen at the checkpoint in order to bring justice.

    He described as cruel and barbaric the murder of Jumbo Ochigbo and wondered why policemen who ordinarily should protect lives and property are now the harbingers of death.

    The former Senate boss stated: “No matter what the issue or disagreement was, Jumbo Ochigbo’s death would have been avoided if the police officers on duty applied wisdom and caution in the discharge of their duties”.

    He reiterated that nothing should be compromised in the investigation saying “life is sacrosanct and no one has the right to take another man’s life needlessly”.

    Senator Mark lamented over the harrowing and humiliating experience of Jumbo Ochigbo’s wife and the kids who witnessed the murder of their father.

    The authority of NSCD is said to have petitioned the police high command over the murder why the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police commissioner has ordered the arrest of the suspected police officers.

  • Police detain two officers for allegedly killing NSCDC personnel

    The Police Command in the Federal Capital Territory ( FCT) says it has taken into custody two of its officers who allegedly killed an officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Nyanya, Abuja.

    Late Ogar Jombo, an Assistant Superintendent of the NSCDC, was allegedly killed on Wednesday in the presence of his wife and children, when he was stopped by the policemen for alleged violation of traffic rules.

    The Commissioner of Police in the FCT, Mr Bala Ciroma, who confirmed the arrest and detention of the officers to the News agency of Nigeria (NAN) said that investigation was ongoing to unravel the cause of the incident.

    “There was a fracas between the senior officer and the policemen, we have commenced investigation and we will not know what really happened until after the investigation,’’ Ciroma said.

    NAN gathered from a relation of the deceased, who pleaded anonymity that the late Jombo was taking his children to school in the morning when the unfortunate incident occurred. (NAN)

  • Sales agents docked for selling pre-registered SIM cards

    Three sales agents, Joe Obudu, Abodunrin Ibrahim and Ojo Taiye, were on Wednesday arraigned before an Ilorin Magistrates’ Court for allegedly selling pre-registered SIM cards.

    The Prosecutor, Ajide Kehinde of Legal Department of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) told the court that the accused were arrested on Nov. 30.

    Kehinde said the arrest followed the information received from a member of staff of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

    According to an official of the NCC, Mr Fiefamotey Esinkuma, while on routine duty, it was discovered that the accused were dealing in pre-registered SIM cards which is against the NCC Act 2003.

    Esinkuma said the accused persons were selling illegal SIM cards to innocent people within Ilorin metropolis.

    The prosecutor said the accused were facing trial on a two-count charge of criminal conspiracy and dealing in illegal sales and use of pre-registered SIM cards.

    According to him, this contravened Sections 96 of Penal Code Law and 131(2) A of the Nigerian Communication Act, 2003.

    The accused persons, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    Kehinde prayed the court to adjourn the case to enable him prove the case against the accused.

    The Defence Counsel, Muhammed Balogun, prayed the court to exercise its bail discretion in favour of the accused, as the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria still presumed them innocent of the allegation until contrary is proved.

    The Magistrate, Mrs Mercy Adebola, admitted the accused to bail each at the sum of N50,000 and a surety in the same amount.

    She adjourned the case till January 24, 2019 for further mention.

  • Edo: Obaseki unveils security architecture, trust fund

    The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, is set to launch the state’s new security architecture which defines roles for and relationships among the various security agencies in his administration’s resolve to tackle insecurity head-on and rid the state of violent and other crimes.

    The event will also feature the launch of a Security Trust Fund, for which N2 billion has been set aside in the state’s 2019 proposed budget, the unveiling of newly trained personnel and equipment, procured by the government  to raise the bar in the   fight against all forms of crimes in the state.

    According to the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Communication Strategy, Mr Crusoe Osagie, “the unveiling which is scheduled for December 13, will set the stage for a new era in the state in which residents will work closely with security agencies, which are being retooled to better perform their functions, which includes ensuring the safety of life and property, to bolster investor confidence across the state.

    Osagie added that “Already procured for unveiling by the state government are three Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs); ninety (90) patrol vehicles; fifty (50) patrol cars and forty (40) pick-up patrol vans; thirty (30) motorcycles and three ambulances.

    “They are all fitted with digital communication equipment for real time information sharing among the various security agencies.”

    He said manpower will be drawn from the Nigeria Police Force; the Military; Department of State Services; Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and the state’s Public Works Volunteers (PUWOV) scheme.

    The governor’s aide explained that 1000 members of PUWOV will support men and women of the various security agencies in executing the goals set in the security blueprint.

    “The first batch of two hundred (200) PUWOV personnel are being trained at the Police Training School (PTS), Ogida, and another 800 volunteers are to be trained before the launch date.

    “They will be kitted in the approved uniform and will form bulk of the first batch that will be unveiled at the launch date of December 13,” Osagie said.

    To kick-start the Security Trust Fund, he said the governor has set aside N2billion in the 2019 proposed budget, which will be supported by private companies in the state and other organisations.

    “The Edo State Security Trust Fund is a pool of fund set up by the Obaseki-led administration, which companies, charitable groups and individuals could contribute to, as part of our support for security agencies, in our collective fight against crimes,” he added.

  • Court remands fake army Colonel

    An Ilorin Senior Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday ordered that Afolabi Stephen, 42, be remanded in Mandalla prison yard for allegedly impersonating an army Lieutenant Colonel.

    Senior Magistrate Ibrahim Dasuki, gave the order after Stephen was arraigned on one count of impersonation.

    Dasuki adjourned until Dec. 6, for further mention.

    Earlier, the prosecutor, Mr Olorungbon Ayodeji told the court that the case was reported to the Intelligence and Investigations Department through station office of the Kwara state Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Command Headquarters, Ilorin.

    Ayodeji said that according to the complainant, ASC Aremu Mayaki, of Offa Division, NSCDC, alleged that the accused  impersonated an army Lieutenant Colonel.

    He said that following an investigation, the police found out that the accused was in the army

    The prosecutor said that a military jungle hat was found in the accused person’s car at the point of arrest, which he claimed belonged to his brother, one Olayemi Afolabi, but it is yet to be identified by the military as a uniform personnel.

    He said that further investigation revealed that the accused extorted some members of the public.

    The prosecutor said that the offence contravened the provisions of Section 132, 133 of the penal code law.

    The accused person pleaded not guilty to the offence.

  • NSCDC apprehend three kidnappers in Niger

    The Niger State Command of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has arrested three suspected kidnappers alledged to have been that terrorizing Pandogari in Rafi Local Government Area of the state.

    The suspected Kidnappers, Yahaya Mohammed, Muritala Isa and Abdullahi Adamu were arrested following a tip off to the paramilitary body.

    The state commandant, Philip Ayuba said that immediately the NSCDC got the information, suspects were placed under surveillance and arrested after adequate intelligence have been gathered about them.

    He disclosed that the suspects had placed calls on one Adamu Hassan, demanding the sum of N10 million ransom or risk being kidnapped.

    “The victim after several negotiation with the suspects was asked to pay the sum of N4 million which he will drop at agreed collection point in Rafi Sanyi area. He then reported the incident to our men who took up the matter.”

    One of the suspects,Yahaya confessed that the victim was his boss and he was the one who provided the telephone number to other members of his gang.

    “I gave my  other members the phone number of my master (Adamu Hassan)  to call him and demand N10 million ransom from him or he will be kidnapped.I regret joining the gang to plan against my masters down fall. My Master provided me with 168 cows and 188 sheep which was carted away  by cattle rustlers and upon that, he went as far as providing another 13 cows for me to survive, I regret planning his down fall. “

    The  state commandant said that four sims cards of various network and one handset was recovered from suspects during arrest.

  • Civil Defence rescues victims

    Edo Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) rescued 12 human trafficking and child labour victims in the last five months, Commandant  Makinde Ayinla said at the weekend.

    He spoke to News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) during a one-day workshop on the menace of human trafficking and illegal migration in Benin City.

    NAN reports that the workshop, with the theme: “Sensitisation of Students on the Menace of Human Trafficking and Illegal Migration”, was organised by the command.

    Ayinla said the corps needed to sensitise students on the ills of human trafficking because of the danger victims were exposed to.
