  • 980,425 PVCs collected in Kwara

    262, 823 not yet collected

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Thursday said that between 2015 and 2018, 980,425 permanent voter cards (PVCs) have been collected in Kwara state.

INEC added that many Nigerians are not aware of the enormous powers embedded in the voting facility.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state, Mallam Garba Attahiru Madami said this in Ilorin, the state capital while playing host to the state Council of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) led by its Chairman, Comrade Umar Abdulwahab.

Madami said that a total of 264,823 PVCs were yet to be claimed by their owners in the state, adding that only 50,571 voters collected the card between 2017/2018.

He decried voter registration apathy in the state and pointed out that Kwara was at the bottom in the just concluded exercise when compared to other states.

In spite of the challenges, the REC expressed confidence the 2019 general elections would be the best in the country, saying the commission was duty bound to conduct free, fair and credible polls.

Madami said INEC had put in place measures to address the challenges, declaring that “I want the state to be rated best”.

He, however, urged the media to be wary of fake news, crosscheck facts and figures and refer to the commission when need arises so as not to mislead the public.

“Our duty is to conduct free, fair and credible election. That we will do. 2019 election will be the best in the country I want to assure you.

INEC has put in place many things to address the challenges, we have mapped out strategies. I’m confident it would be the best.

“Our doors are opened for any information. But let me quickly add that voter registration in Kwara is very poor. Kwara is at the bottom in the voter registration when compared to other states. Less than one million people obtained PVC in Kwara, only 50,000 added to this between 2017 and 2018.

“Another thing is that many voters don’t know the power of PVC. We will start with that.

I want to therefore urge the media to check fake news. We are going to give you maximum cooperation to make your job easier. We are in Kwara to conduct free and fair election in Kwara. I want the state to be rated best”, Madami said.

In his remarks, the state NUJ Chairman, Comrade Umar Abdulwahab, said the union had enjoyed cordial relationship with the electoral umpire and added that it should be sustained especially now that the elections are around the corner.

He, however, stressed the need to make available right information at the appropriate time if the era of fake news must be ended.

The NUJ chairman urged the commission to allow the union handle accreditation of journalists that would be assigned to cover the forthcoming general elections in the state as exemplified in the Ekiti governorship poll held few weeks ago.

  • Group recommends death sentence for rapists

No fewer than 3,000 youths have staged a walk campaigning against rape, gender based violence and other social vices in Ilorin, the Kwara state capital.

The walk against rape and gender based violence took off from the Kwara State Stadium complex through major streets of Ilorin metropolis and terminated at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) secretariat along Offa road on Saturday last week.

The campaign was put together by a non-governmental organization (NGO), SAAB Foundation. Founder of the NGO, Miss Saadat Bibire, said the campaign was motivated by the need to create awareness in the public to kick against the menace of rape and gender based intimidation.

Miss Bibire described rape as a criminal offence that should be meted with commensurate punishment which is death.

In the alternative, she recommended the castration of anybody found to culpable of raping.

Said she: “We need to make somebody a scapegoat. I always make reference to Saudi Arabia. In that country if you rape somebody it is a death sentence. That is why they don’t indulge in rape over there, but in Nigeria rape is a bailable offence. Rape equals murder. A murderer knows he will be killed, so rapists should be killed. If there is a scapegoat, there will be a reduction in the level of rape cases in the country. In the alternative to death sentence for rapist, the rapist can be castrated to serve as deterrent to others.

“Violence should also be taken more seriously. Kudos to Lagos and Kwara state governments for trying to make sure rape cases are not so rampant in their domains. In as much as that some bad eggs still exists to dwarf their efforts. There should be a strict law that actually scares people away from committing rape in the society.

“Sadly, the society makes it difficult for victims to speak up because if you speak up, they stigmatise you. It is the stigmatization that is making the victims to speak up. Which is very bad, it is not their fault. This is why we have very low reportage in rape cases. They ask you questions like what were you wearing? Or where were you going to?

I am a citizen of Nigeria I can go anywhere I like. I have my freedom of movement etc.

“Therefore, I calling of the Federal Government to review and strengthen the rape cases law. Personally, they reviewed the violence against women law recently, but they still have done the needful.

There is a line that says that to prove rape, there must be an eyewitness. That is totally wrong. That line should be expunged.

“The 3rd annual rally and seminar is to campaign against gender based violence, such as rape, domestic violence, child abuse and mutilation.

We are also standing to fight for the right of women in the society.”

She added that her foundation plans to provide healing and support for victims of rape and further engage teens and youths in preventive and anti-rape programs and ensuring that adequate punishment is meted out against perpetrators.

  • Jones Abiri returns to Bayelsa, relieves ordeal

‘I was blindfolded, held in underground DSS cell’ says Abiri

Jones Abiri, a journalist and publisher of a local tabloid in Bayelsa State, the Weekly Source, on Tuesday returned to Yenagoa, the state capital, and relieved his ordeal in the hands of the Department for State Security (DSS).

Abiri, who was received at the Secretariat of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) by journalists and leadership of the Civil Liberty Organisation (CLO) said he was arrested in his office, detained for seven days in DSS cell in Yenagoa and later blindfolded and flown to Abuja.

He said he was kept incommunicado in an underground DSS cell in Abuja and denied access to medical treatment for about two years.

Abiri, who was also received by his wife and family members, said the hope that God would grant him freedom one day kept him alive throughout the period of his incarceration.

He said: “Precisely l was arrested on July 21st, 2016 in my office at about 3:23pm. About 12 armed men came to my office and they came with a document, a search warrant that my office was under investigations.

“When l perused the search warrant, l saw it was signed by one Magistrate Lucky. I allowed them and they searched my office. At the end of the search they found nothing. They handcuffed me, took my phones, laptops and other things. Things unconnected to my arrest were also taken. All my pay slips, banking information were taken.

“They whisked me away to the state command. I gave my statement and after spending seven days in Yenagoa, they took me to Abuja. Initially, l didn’t know where l was going. My eyes were blindfolded. Since that time, l have not been giving the grace and the opportunity to see my wife, my children, sisters, brothers and friends.

“My lawyers were denied access to me. I was in an underground cell, where when the light went off, you would not see the next person. I was also denied medicals. I thank God that the CLO and other rights organization took up the matter and today l am out of detention.

“If not because of the voice of the media and the CLO, DSS wouldn’t have taken me to court. I was given one count charge that l sent threat messages to Agip Nigeria Limited and Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) demanding money.

“But l said l knew nothing about that because l had no connection with oil companies. But they insisted l was the one. But l kept on holding onto my creator. Now the matter is court”.

Abiri assured the DSS and person who signed his bail bond that he would not jump bail expressing optimism that he would win the case.

“They were thinking that l would jump bail. But l am ready and very resilient to face my trial. I am emphatic and believing God that l am going to win the case. I am not scared of them. Dr. Ambassador Godknows Igali and Fredrick Andy came to my rescue to sign the bail bonds without fear. They stuck their neck. So, l will not jump bail”, he said.

He added that following his experience in detention, he had concluded plans to write a book to be entitled, My Prison Journey.

He thanked the Press Unlimited, an organisation in Netherlands for donating €2000 amounting to about N450,000 which facilitated his freedom.

He said though he knew nothing about the organisation, it came to his rescue through an environmental activist, Alagoa Morris and Peter Ikanga.

Abiri disclosed that he had filed a suit to enforce his fundamental human rights at the Federal High Court, Abuja adding that the matter would come up for hearing on August 27th.

“If l am a militant, Niger Delta will know that l am a militant. But l am not a militant. If I were a militant, l wouldn’t have owned an office to be doing my newspaper work. I should have been in the creek. I have already filed a suit at the Federal High Court, Abuja to enforce my fundamental human rights”, he said.

James lamented that over 50 persons from the region were being held in detention without trial and called on the DSS to follow the process of law and grant them freedom.

Also speaking, the Bayelsa Chairman, NUJ, Mr. John Angese, said Abiri is a bonafide journalist in the state saying his experience in DSS detention would make him stronger in his profession.

Chairmen of the Bayelsa Federated Newspapers Publishers Association (BAFENPA) and Bayelsa Independent Publishers Association (BIPA) in their various remarks asked the DSS to respect the rule of law in its operations.
