The 82 Division Command Headquarters of the Nigerian Army, Enugu said it arrested 106 suspects in the recent concluded Operation Python Dance II also known as Egwueke which was carried out by its personnel in the Southeast and South-South parts of Nigeria.

The command also stated that they recovered dangerous arms (guns) and yet-to-be expended ammunition which it said have been handed over the police together with the suspects for continuation of investigation and possible prosecution.

Recall that the leadership of Nigerian Army had on September 15 flagged off Operation Python Dance II in the Southeastern parts of the country which they said was to tackle kidnapping, cultism, rape, child theft and child trafficking, armed robbery and other vices that could lead insecurity of the region and the country by extension.

In a Press Release that was made available to The Nation by the Deputy Director Public Relations and 82 Division of the Nigerian Army’s spokesman, Col. Musa Sagir the suspects were arrested within the various Areas of Responsibilities (AR) where the Python Dance Exercise covered.

According to Musa most of the hoodlums who couldn’t withstand the heat of the operation in the Southeast flew to neighbouring South-South States where they presumably went to seek refuge while the operation lasted.

Musa in the release disclosed that a total of 15 suspects, 11 assorted arms including 15 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition and 7 cartridges were arrested and recovered in Abia during the one month exercise.

“Due to sustained military line of operation, many criminals such as armed robbers, kidnappers, drug barons, cultists and violent agitators were arrested and handed over to the police across the Southeast Region. Some fizzled out of the zone to neighbouring States of Akwa Ibom, Delta and Rivers.

“So far, a total of One Hundred Six (106) suspects were arrested for different offences, in different areas across the South East and all were handed over to police in the various police commands across the region. “Similarly, in Sector 6, 13 Brigade Area of Responsibility (Cross River State), criminals were denied freedom of action, no arrest was made and only 1x locally made gun and a rocket launcher were recovered.

“While in Sector 3, – 82 Division Garrison Area of Responsibility (Enugu State), farmers-herdsmen clash was averted as reported in the previous update. Also, a suspect was arrested at the Abakpa Cantonment Main Gate on his way to enter the Cantonment with some quantity of substance suspected to be Indian hemp and many sachets of Tramadol drugs.

“In Sector 4, 302 Artillery General Support Regiment, Onitsha Anambra State, criminal elements appeared to have sneaked out of the State throughout the period of the Exercise. This is without prejudice to the unfortunate but isolated killing of the Sun newspaper Staff in Onitsha general area.

“In Sector 5, 24 Engineer Support Regiment’s location in Ebonyi State, the emphasis was majorly on inter-communal and farmers-herdsmen clashes which were well Check mated during the Exercise. In addition, five (5) suspected Indian hemp hawkers and four (4) persons were arrested in connection with communal crisis between Obubra and Abakaliki localities of Ebonyi and Cross River States. The latter were however released by the regiment after interrogation,” the release read in parts.

Meanwhile, the General Officer Commanding 82 Division, Maj. Gen. Adamu Baba Abubakar speaking to journalists at the Sector 1 Tactical Headquarters of (14 Brigade) situated in Umuahia, the Abia State capital said that they would build on the gains of the military operation to strengthen security in the southeast.

Abubakar added that the Army would continue to collaborate with other sister security agencies in Abia and entire southeast to ensure that Abia and the entire region remain conducive for habitation and smooth operation of business and commercial activities.

He warned hoodlums who may wish to cash into the end of the operation to commit crimes to have a rethink and turn a new leaf, stressing that they won’t fold their arms to watch unscrupulous elements truncate the peace the innocent Nigerians are enjoying following the operation.

He thanked the southeast governors for the cooperation they gave to the exercise and its men which was why they were able to record the successes they recorded and assured that the Nigerian Army would continue to partner with the states under its command in fighting crime and criminality in their states.

“Officially, Egwueke II has ended, but then the operatives that were used are still on ground. We are in Ember Months and you know what this ending part of the year usually looks like. If you can remember, Egwueke I cut across the whole of December down to January 2017 when it was concluded. And again, in Anambra you know election is coming up. A lot of issues are on ground. It’s not as if because Egwueke II has finished, we should now go pack our bags and go and sleep. No. Security is a process and not an end to a process,” Abubakar stated.

Kwara Govt denies rumours of soldiers injecting students in Omu Aran

The Kwara Government has denied rumours that soldiers are injecting school pupils in Omu-Aran, Irepodun Local Government Area of the state with killer vaccines.

The Special Adviser ( SA ) on Security to the Governor, Alhaji Amusa Bello, made the denial in a statement on Wednesday in Ilorin.

The  parents and guardians had on hearing the rumour rushed to schools to withdraw their wards.

They besieged both private and public schools in the area as early 9 a.m. on hearing the rumour of the presence of vaccine injection team allegedly accompanied by soldiers in the town.

Some of the parents, mostly traders and commercial motorcyclists, abandoned their businesses to withdraw their wards from schools to prevent them from being injected with the alleged vaccine.

Some schools had to lock their gates to prevent the parents from gaining entrance to remove the students.

The SA, therefore, advised members of the public to ignore the rumour as neither the Nigerian Army nor any other security agency was currently undertaking a vaccination exercise or any other health campaign in any part of the State.

“The State Government calls on parents and guardians not to panic and to refrain from withdrawing their wards from schools based on this unfounded rumour,” he said.

“The unwholesome activities of some men of the Nigerian Army, who have formed the habit of subjecting members of the civil populace to corporal punishments and extortion of money, have reached the government of Abia.

Army launches Exercise Crocodile Smile II in Lagos

Nigerian Army said on Friday the increase in crimes in coastal areas of the country prompted it to step up training and operations in the amphibious environment.

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, stated this at Takwa Bay Island in Lagos State when he launched “Exercise Crocodile Smile II.”

According to him, the “Order of Battle” 2016 provides for amphibious battalion in the island to keep the coastal area of Lagos State safe.

He said: “A detachment of Nigerian Army has since been stationed on the island; more army presence would also be felt soon on the island and other parts of the country in line with the 2016 Order of Battle as fund becomes available.”

The army chief recalled that the first phase of the exercise which took place between August and September 2016 in Abia, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Imo and Rivers states recorded tremendous success.

He said it degraded activities of militants and illegal oil bunkerers, destruction of kidnappers’ den and rescue of kidnapped victims and destruction of cultists’ camps, among others.

Buratai, however, said the success of Exercise Crocodile Smile I in those states pushed some criminal elements to other parts of the country, thus necessitating “readjustment” of area of operation of the second phase in 2017.

He added that it was in that regard that the exercise was being conducted in the South South and South West regions.

    • Also rescues 230 in sambisa forest

The Nigerian Army said it has made significant effort in the push towards routing out the ruminants of Boko Haram insurgents in Sambisa forest and other location in the theater of operation.

Maj. Gen Attahiru also added that total of ten insurgents surrendered within the period under review, stressing that the Theatre had recorded many successes against the insurgents after  the newly-launched  Operation DEEP PUNCH 2 and Operation RUWAN WUTA in Sambisa forest.

According to him, two operations focused on coordinated aerial bombardments by the air and artillery platforms supported by land operations to decimate the insurgents.

He also explained that the Mobile Strike Teams (MSTs) inaugurated in August has drastically gained momentum and had continued to ensure that the Main Supply Routes of the insurgents (MSRs) were firmly secured.

    Gen Attahiru noted that
the operations had enhanced safety of commuters as well as ensured the gradual return of economic activities in some affected rural communities.

His words: “Some of the operations led to the killing of two  key Boko Haram commanders, Abdu Kawuri and Abubakar Benishek, in a successful operation on Sept. 1  at Alafa in Bama Local Government Area.

“Additionally, a prominent Commander, Ba’abba Ibrahim, and two other commanders died after sustaining injuries during their last encounter with our Special Forces in an ambush at Magumeri council.

Attahiru further said that during the period under review, troops foiled several suicide and other forms of Improvised Explosive Device (IED) attacks, “thereby causing the adversary to drown in its own blood”.

“I want to reassure you that Boko Haram will finally be brought to its knees in no distant time as troops had conducted precursor operations and other offensives geared toward their final defeat.

On ambush operations, The Theatre Commander said troops had denied the insurgents any freedom of action through its ambushes along Road Ngurosoye – Bama near Borno State College of Basic Studies (BOCOBS) and Mararaba Kirawa.

  • Army begins exercise crocodile smile II

Army begins exercise crocodile smile II

The Nigerian Army has said that it would begin exercise Crocodile Smile II in the south-south region of the country by Friday, 13th October.

According to a statement by the Director of Army Public Relations, Brig. General Sani Usman, the exercise would complement the on-going exercise Python Dance II in the south-east of the country.

The army appealed to the people to remain calm and law abiding, noting that the exercise would span across 3 Divisions of the Nigerian Army in the South-south.

The statement reads: “The Nigerian Army is set to flag off Exercise CROCODILE SMILE II on Friday, 13th October 2017. The Exercise, set to span across 3 Divisions of the Nigerian Army (2, 6 and 81 Divisions), is in line with the 2017 Training Directives which aims at training troops in the conduct of Internal Security Operations in aid of Civil Authorities across the various formations’ areas of responsibilities, based on Constitutional provisions.

“It will be recalled that last year, between November and December 2016, Exercise CROCODILE SMILE I was conducted within the Niger Delta States to curtail prevailing security challenges then. These challenges include illegal oil bunkering, pipeline vandalism, kidnapping and militancy amongst others.

“Exercise CROCODILE SMILE II is specifically designed to further the gains and consolidate on the successes of Exercise CROCODILE SMILE I. Additionally, with the operationalization of 6 Division Nigerian Army, earlier in the year, the need to exercise troops in an amphibious environment makes it expedient to hold Exercise CROCODILE SMILE II. Moreover, this exercise will complement the on-going Exercise EGWU EKE II in the South-Eastern part of the country.

“Let us not be quick to forget the scenario in which these exercises are carried out. EGWU EKE II became expedient due to the mindless assassinations (even in religious places), attack on security personnel, theft of weapons, armed banditry, kidnapping and cultism, among other security challenges. In a similar vein, security challenges in the South West and Niger Delta geo-political regions such as illegal oil bunkering, pipeline vandalism, cultism, kidnapping, militancy and other challenges are becoming rampant.

“The need for troops to sharpen their skills to cope with these security challenges within the 2, 6 and 81 Divisions’ Area of Responsibilities calls for the conduct of Exercise CROCODILE SMILE II. Also, in actualizing the Chief of Army Staff’s vision, which is to ‘To have a Professionally Responsive Nigerian Army in the Discharge of its Constitutional Roles’, accentuates the call for the conduct of this exercise in conjunction with sister services and other security agencies.

“This exercise will therefore be conducted with the involvement of other security agencies such as the Nigerian Police and Nigeria Security, Department of State Services, Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, Nigeria Customs Service and National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, just to mention a few. 5.

“EXERCISE CROCODILE SMILE II is also conceptualized to leverage on real time intelligence to curtail insecurity, thereby fulfilling both training and operational objectives. Accordingly, Exercise Headquarters would be established in the field to facilitate open communication between members of the public and exercising troops. Emphasis will be placed on raids, cordon and search operations, anti-kidnapping drills, road blocks, check points and other amphibious operations. Community support activities such as medical outreaches will also feature prominently during the Exercise.

“In this regards, members of the public are enjoined not to panic on seeing the movement of military equipment and troops to staging areas as their safety and well-being is guaranteed at all times. The public is also requested to remain vigilant security conscious and report suspected criminals who will likely flee the military exercise areas to find safe haven among communities. Contact phone numbers of all Brigade commanders in the exercise areas would be made public in addition to the Nigerian Army short code information and call centre 193.”
