  • Army arrests 1,240 Boko Haram suspects in Sambisa raid

The Nigerian Army said it had arrested about 1,240 suspected Boko Haram terrorists during a mop-up operation by troops inside the Sambisa forest.

The Theatre Commander, Operation Lafiya Dole, Maj. -Gen. Lucky Irabor, disclosed this while giving update to journalists on Operation Rescue Final at the Maimalari Cantonment, Maiduguri.

Irabor said 413 of the suspects were adults, 323 were female adults, 251 male children, while 253 were female children.

He said the suspects were apprehended during a mop-up operation against the sect members in the forest.

“We are interrogating them to know whether they are Boko Haram members, because there is no way somebody that is not their member would live inside Sambisa forest, “the News Agency of Nigeria quoted the army officer as saying to journalists on Wednesday.

“We are still on the trail of the terrorists and I want to assure you that all escape routes have been blocked.

“Within this period, also, about 30 fleeing suspected Boko Haram members have surrendered to the Niger Multinational Troops on the shores of the Lake Chad and we learnt that they were taken to Difa in the Niger Republic.

“The suspects included 24 male and six females.

“We would like to use this opportunity to encourage the terrorists to give up the fight because the window is still open.”

Army ‘recovers’ Shekau’s Qur’an, flag in Sambisa forest

The Nigerian Army on Wednesday said it had recovered Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau’s, Qur’an and flag in Camp Zero, the sect headquarters in Sambisa forest.

The Theatre Commander of Operation Lafiya Dole, Maj.-Gen. Lucky Irabor, said this while giving journalists update on “Operation Rescue Final’’ in Maiduguri.

“We believe that the Holy Book and the flag were abandoned by Abubakar Shekau while he escaped,” the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) quoted Gen. Irabor as saying to journalists on Wednesday.

“The Book will be taken to the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Burutai, for onward presentation to Mr. President.

“We have also made a lot of arrests. Our troops in Damboa arrested about 15 Boko Haram members. We also arrested one Musa from Potiskum on Christmas Day.

“On December 26 our troops also intercepted two Boko Haram suspects in Maiduguri.

“We, therefore, warn residents of the state to be wary of people coming to hide in and around their houses.

“We are also warning residents to report any suspected Boko Haram members hiding in their houses to the relevant security agencies and any failure to do that would tantamount to supporting and sympathising with the sect’s activities.”

  • Army will use Sambisa forest as training ground – Buratai

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, on Monday said Sambisa forest would serve as training ground for personnel of the Nigerian Army as from 2017.

Buratai said this in Damasak, Borno, while celebrating Christmas with troops of 145 Battalion after the road leading to the town was reopened by Governor Kashim Shettima, after three years of closure.

He said troops were already conducting a mop up operation in the forest after its capture from Boko Haram insurgents.

“We are also opening up roads to Sambisa and Alagarno forest. Sambisa forest is going to be one of our training grounds,” the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) quoted the army chief as saying at the forum.

“I have already directed that we should conduct Nigerian Army small arms championship in that forest next year.

“And we are going to use it also to test our fighting vehicles, other key equipment and weapons that require testing whenever we want to induct new weapon and equipment into the Nigerian army inventory.

“It will afford us very good ground for basic tactics and indeed advance tactics, including but not limited to tactics at the platoon, company, battalion, Brigade and even division levels.

“We are going to make it more robust to make sure that these criminals do not come back to that forest again.”

•Hails troops for taking Boko Haram stronghold

Nigerians yesterday received one of the most soul-lifting messages yet from President Mohammadu Buhari: the routing of the terror sect Boko Haram from its stronghold of Sambisa Forest in Borno State.

The entire 1300 square kilometre forest fell into the   hands of the soldiers at about 1.35pm on Thursday, according to Buhari in what he himself called “the long-awaited and most gratifying news.”

He said he was delighted at the news and “most proud of the gallant troops,” which made it all possible.

He particularly acknowledged “the determination, courage and resilience of troops of Operation Lafiya Dole at finally entering and crushing the remnants of the Boko Haram insurgents at ‘Camp Zero’, which is located deep within the heart of Sambisa Forest.”

He was briefed on the development by the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai.

Buhari confirmed that that the terrorists “are on the run, and no longer have a place to hide.”

His message: “I am delighted at, and most proud of the gallant troops of the Nigerian Army, on receipt of the long-awaited and most gratifying news of the final crushing of Boko Haram terrorists in their last enclave in Sambisa Forest.

“I want to use this opportunity to commend the determination, courage and resilience of troops of Operation Lafiya Dole at finally entering and crushing the remnants of the Boko Haram insurgents at “Camp Zero”, which is located deep within the heart of Sambisa Forest.

“I was told by the Chief of Army Staff that the Camp fell at about 1:35pm on Friday, December 22, and that the terrorists are on the run, and no longer have a place to hide.  I urge you to maintain the tempo by pursuing them and bringing them to justice.

“I, therefore, call on all Nigerians to cooperate and support the Nigerian Armed Forces and other security agencies by providing useful information that will expose all the terrorists hiding among the populace.

“Further efforts should be intensified to locate and free our remaining Chibok girls still in captivity. May God be with them.

“I also want to congratulate and commend the able leadership of the Nigerian Army in particular and indeed, that of the Armed Forces in general, for making this possible. This, no doubt, will go a long way in improving the security situation not only in the North East, but the country in general.  But we must not let our guards down.

“Once more, congratulations to our troops and all who, in one way or the other, contributed to this most commendable and momentous effort. May the Almighty continue to be with you.

“I wish you a Merry Christmas and a most rewarding and peaceful Year 2017 ahead.”

Buratai separately lauded the efforts and sacrifices of “gallant officers and men of the Nigerian Army currently engaged in the counter insurgency operations in the North East and other operations across the country and abroad.”

He gave the commendation in a Christmas and New Year message to the personnel.

He congratulated them for their “bravery, doggedness and loyalty in these endeavours,” and urged them to “maintain the momentum and remain steadfast as we continue to professionally and responsively carryout our constitutional roles.”

He pledged to continue to “ensure that troops’ welfare and that of their families, remains my utmost priority.”

He also assured them of “Federal Government’s commitment to providing the Nigerian Army with the requisite support for us to perform our duties.

“The President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, President Muhammadu Buhari, has pledged his total support to the Armed Forces to bring all ongoing operations to an end in favour of our dear country.

“This festive season heralds peace as well as a time for merriment, sober reflection and introspection. I enjoin us all to continue to pray to the Almighty God for the repose of the souls of our fallen comrades and the wellbeing of the families of our brave fallen heroes,” the army said.

While thanking the officers and men for the good job they had done in 2016, he said they should look forward to “making greater progress in 2017.”

He wished them all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

However, the ouster of the insurgents from Sambisa does not necessarily translate into an end to other forms of terrorism by the extremists.

These include suicide bombings, and assaults on villages, gatherings and military locations in the Northeast.

The Sambisa Forest which Gen. Buratai last March said is  about the size of Enugu State had served Boko Haram in various ways including its operational base, training camps, and hideout for its leaders, foot soldiers and their families.

Most of the over 200 Chibok school girls that were abducted in April 2014 are believed to have been kept in the forest for some time.

Some of the girls were released in October after protracted negotiations with the terrorists.

Boko Haram: Army begins road construction inside Sambisa

The Nigerian Army on Wednesday said it had commenced construction of road network from Alagarno to Sambisa to ease troops operations in mopping up Boko Haram insurgents in the forest.

Maj.-Gen. Lucky Irabor,  the Theatre Commander, Operation Lafiya Dole, stated this during a press conference at the Maimalari military cantonment, Maiduguri.

“Construction of the roads will assist fighting troops in their effort to mop up the Boko Haram insurgents from their hideouts,” Irabor said.

He called on individuals and corporate organisations to support the military as government alone could not do everything.

Irabor said construction of roads was essential to reviving the economic development of the North-East.

“I also urge the general public to continue to support the military in the North-East through the provision of useful information and not to follow the ways of some media outfits who are bent on bringing down the military,” the commander said.

  • Army rejects video on soldiers’ maltreatment

The Nigerian Army on Wednesday said the current video clip being circulated, alleging maltreatment of some soldiers was shot about six months ago by some disgruntled elements.

The Army Spokesman, Brig-Gen. Sani Usman, said in a statement that the video was shot when 29 Task Force Brigade captured Alagarno Forest and environs in Borno.

“It is disheartening that some mischievous elements have decided to circulate it now, creating the false impression that it is a recent occurrence,” the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) quoted the army spokesman as saying on the matter.

“We wish to state further that the matter was conclusively investigated at the time, several months ago.

“The Board of Inquiry actually showed that, at the time of the incident, the unit’s water tanker still contained water, but a soldier mischievously concealed it.

“That soldier was charged and punished accordingly.”

He added that in addition to the unit’s water tanker, a borehole was subsequently drilled at the location and is still serving both the military and adjoining communities.

“We wish to restate with utmost concern the continued commitment of the Nigerian Army to the total welfare of all its personnel,” Usman said.

Soldiers tasked on selfless service, patriotism for national cohesion

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), has advised graduates of the 75 Regular Recruits Intake of the Depot Nigerian Army to embrace selfless service, patriotism and high sense of discipline to pave way for national cohesion.

Lt-Gen. Tukur Buratai made this known in Zaria on Saturday when he was speaking as the Reviewing Officer at their Passing Out Parade(POP).

Buratai, who was represented by the General Officer Commanding 82 Mechanised Division (GOC), Enugu, Maj-Gen. Adamu Babayo-Abubakar identified discipline, commitment, dedication and patriotism as the unambiguous path to success in life.

The army boss urged the graduating recruits to make discipline their watchword and work hard to prosper in their future endeavours.

He charged them to strive hard to continue to be symbols of pride to their families, good ambassadors of the Depot, the Nigerian Army and the nation at large.

Buratai said the rigorous training received from the Depot Nigerian Army was meant to mould them to become vibrant soldiers that would actively defend the integrity of their fatherland.

Buratai observed that Depot Nigerian Army had remained pivotal in the production of lower cadre manpower for the Nigerian Army.

“This had been happily executed in the transformation of the able-bodied young men and women from civilians into combatant soldiers recruited to rely on to defend our territorial integrity from external and internal threats.

“This function had even become more important, particularly in this period of doubting but insurmountable security challenges.

“Therefore, the role of this institution in manpower development of Nigerian Army is critical toward ensuring national security and economic development, ” he said.

He lauded the efforts of the Depot Commandant, Brig-Gen. Christopher Musa and his lieutenants for providing adequate professional training to the young soldiers and structural development.

Buratai urged them to keep the flag flying for the good of the nation.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the passing out parade produced about 5,898 recruits out of the initial 6,000 recruits, who earlier reported and registered for the training.

NAN reports that the POP featured presentation of awards to deserving recruits who distinguished themselves to include best female recruit, best overall recruit, Commandant’s award for Leadership and Regimentation, Chief of Administration’s award and COAS award.
