  • Army urges citizens to embrace soldiers as family, strengthen unity

Army urges citizens to embrace soldiers as family, strengthen unity

The Nigerian Army has appealed to citizens to view the Army as their own institution and to regard soldiers as their brothers, sisters, and children, fostering a stronger sense of unity and shared responsibility.

Emphasising its unwavering commitment to serving the people, the Army said it should be seen as an institution that truly belongs to all Nigerians.

The Chief of Civil-Military Affairs (CCMA), Maj.-Gen. Gold Chibuisi, made the appeal on Saturday night during a roundtable with Defence Correspondents in Abuja.

He said: “There is no army that doesn’t want itself to be seen as working for the people. We are the Nigerian Army. The Nigerian people own us. It is your army.”

The CCMA stressed the importance of public perception in strengthening national unity, noting that soldiers should be seen as brothers, sons, and neighbors, not as distant or violent enforcers.

Gen. Chibuisi shared a personal story to illustrate the lingering trust issues the military faces, recounting how an officer had to spend nine months convincing a lady to marry him due to negative perceptions of soldiers as violent.

He said: “I do not want another officer to go through that. It is a work in progress, but as we fine-tune the conduct of our personnel and deepen public engagement, things will keep improving.”

Addressing the controversial use of military uniforms by civilians, Chibuisi warned that impersonating military personnel is illegal and could endanger national security.

“Currently, there are a lot of criminals using military uniforms to perpetrate crimes. If people keep dressing like that, how do you differentiate between a criminal and a genuine soldier?”

He called on the media to assist in sensitization efforts, stressing that offenders should be arrested and prosecuted, rather than subjected to extrajudicial treatment.

Earlier, the President of the Defence Correspondents’ Association of Nigeria, Ismail Musa, pledged journalists’ commitment to responsible, accurate, and balanced reportage of security matters.

“Today’s roundtable is not just for speeches; it’s a call to action. Through our work, we aim to foster a safer, more secure Nigeria,” Musa said.

“I, therefore wish to reiterate that training, discipline and commitment to duty are all part of essential components in achieving success in operations.”

Noting the multidimensional and complex nature of security threats confronting the country, Yahya said the Army’s response has also been robust,    holistic and dynamic with adequate support, improved inter-agencies cooperation and mission specific training across all cadres.

“However, the dynamic nature of threats which continues to evolve amplifies the need for training that is constantly adaptive and as such it is envisaged that this operations planning cadre would deliver the requisite training,” he said.

Nigerian Army Resource Centre DG calls for stronger military-media collaboration

The Director General of the Nigerian Army Resource Centre (NARC), Maj.-Gen. Garba Wahab (Rtd), has called on the military to strengthen its relationship with the media through a three-tiered engagement strategy.

Speaking during a roundtable with members of the Defence Correspondents Association of Nigeria (DECAN) in Abuja on Friday, Wahab emphasized the need for targeted engagement with three key groups: media owners, editors, and defense correspondents.

He noted that such collaboration would enhance trust and improve cooperation between the military and the media.

He said the event, with the theme “National Interest versus National Security: A Quest for Responsible Journalism”, was organised with a view to taking steps to bridge the gaps that had been observed in the military-media relations, adding that there was the need to begin to build trust.

He said: “Both parties, both sides need to find a way of moving ahead, and that is why the center is getting the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) and the services informed as to what the gaps that have been identified by the media practitioners, particularly the defence correspondents.

“There is need for them to block the gap from their side, and from the media side to also be mindful of the reportage, putting national security into consideration.

Wahab said that the military must engage with the three layers involved, saying that the defence correspondents, the guild of editors and media owners were the critical layers to deal with.

He said that all the layers must work in agreement with the military to be able to project national interest and also ensure national security.

“We need to keep on talking to Defence correspondents, but the Guild of Editors need to be brought in at one point, and the owners of all the organisations need to come in.

“So different levels and different sets of people. We will have to identify those that we believe should be the one dealing with each of these strata and then finding a common ground for the three to regularly talk and discuss among themselves.

“Otherwise, if, for instance, the owners discuss, for instance, with the minister or CDS, if the message is not passed down to the Guild of Editors, the efforts have been wasted,” he added.
