    How Funke Akindele made over N6bn at Nigerian box office in five years

    Renowned actress, filmmaker, and producer Funke Akindele has reinforced her position as one of the most commercially successful figures in Nigeria’s film industry, recording an unparalleled run of box office successes over the past five years.

    According to industry box office figures, Akindele has grossed over N6 billion in the last five years, with a string of hit films that have captivated local audiences.

    Her commercial rise gained momentum in 2020 with the release of “Omo Ghetto: The Saga,” which grossed over N636 million nationwide.

    Akindele’s subsequent releases have consistently broken records, cementing her status as a dependable box office force.

    “Battle on Buka Street” (2022) earned approximately N668 million, while “A Tribe Called Judah” (2023) crossed the N1 billion mark, grossing an estimated N1.4 billion.

    In 2024, Akindele surpassed her previous record with “Everybody Loves Jenifa,” which generated nearly N1.88 billion, making it the highest-grossing Nollywood film of all time.

    Her latest release, “Behind the Scenes” (2025), has earned over N1.7 billion, emerging as the top domestic film of the year.

    With multiple billion-naira titles to her name, Akindele occupies three of the top four positions on the list of Nigeria’s highest-grossing films.

    ‘Superman’ tops Nigerian box office for second consecutive week

    ‘Superman’ a movie starring David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan and Nicolas Hoult, has topped the box office for the second consecutive weekend, grossing N263 million.

    This was shared on Tuesday through an Instagram post by Film One Entertainment, the movie’s distributing company.

    The company said the movie performed well at the box office after making 111.9 million in its first week.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the movie is about Superman, a superhero whose actions spark global controversy thereby giving his villain, Lex Luthor, a chance to eliminate him.

    Nigerian box office records 60% growth, rakes in N11.5bn

    The Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN) says the Nigerian film industry has experienced a significant surge with the box office, recording an impressive 60 per cent increase in 2024.

    Mr Ope Ajayi, CEAN’s National Chairman, revealed this while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

    According to him, N11.5 billion was realised in the year 2024 from ticket sales across cinemas in Nigeria, as against N7.2 billion made in 2023.

    He said in 2024, the cinemas accommodated no fewer than 2.66 million persons and 2.54 million persons in 2023.

    “We have recorded 60 per cent growth in revenue in 2024 and about 4.5 per cent growth in admissions despite harsh economic climate.

    “This is a remarkable achievement and it is a testament to the industry’s resilience, creativity and determination.

    “It is also the first time we are seeing a growth in admissions since 2020 signaling a significant upturn in the cinema subsector,” he said.

    Ajayi listed the top five Nollywood films in 2024 as Everybody Loves Jennifer, Queen Lateefah, Ajosepo, Ajakaju and Alakada Bad &Boujee.

    He said: “Everybody Loves Jennifer” raked in N1.124 billion, “Queen Lateefah” made N365.5 million, “Ajosepo” scooped in N257.3 million, “Ajakaju” made N252.8million while “Alakada Bad &Boujee” raked in N229.1million.

    “Everybody Loves Jennifer and Alakada Bad & Boujee are still in cinemas.”

    Ajayi noted that the top five Hollywood films in 2024 were Deadpool & Wolverine, Bad Boys 4, Gladiator II, Moana 2 and Venom 3.
