  • I once hawked in traffic, says Nigerian Idol 5 winner, K-Peace

I once hawked in traffic, says Nigerian Idol 5 winner, K-Peace

Winner of Nigerian Idol Season 5, Olakunle Ogunrombi, aka K-Peace has made some revelations about his humble beginning, saying his life was once like that of a person living in the ‘wilderness’..

The Ogun State-born singer revealed that he once hawked edibles like Gala, pure water and soft drinks in the traffic after the death of his father.

He could not thank the organizers of Nigerian Idol enough, for the music contest that changed the story of his life as winner of the coveted prize of N7.5 million, an all-expense paid trip to Dubai, a Hyundai Sports Utility Vehicle and a N7.5 million recording deal with South Africa-based Universal Music label among other largesse.

“I come from a family of five children and we were well-catered for. My father was an engineer with Leventis Motors at one time, but he lost his job and later tried his hands at trading in motor parts. We eventually lost him to cardiac arrest. That marked the beginning of many difficult years for every one of us, including our mother whose duty it was to provide for us,” said the 32-year-old who took the competition by storm with a unique genre of music; the FujiRnB which he calls a fusion of contemporary and Fuji music.

“At that time, I covered Mile 2 to Maza-Maza and Alakija, selling Chin-chin. I later sold Gala, Pure water and soft drinks around the “Chopping Centre” neighbourhood of Festac Town,” he said.

K-Peace had started out sealing and supplying Chin-Chin to some roadside traders, but opted to go into direct selling when he realised he would make more money doing so.

Prior to this, he had worked as a casual worker in a factory at Maza-Maza where he worked daily from 7 am to 5 pm for a paltry sum of N120.00 with an option of overtime at N30.00 per day. He was on that job for a year before switching to roadside trading.

All that had changed on coming to the show, but his glorious triumph and the attendant rewards, monetary and non-monetary will obviously boost his finances and music career.

During the show, K-Peace repeatedly shone like the star that he is today. He was a leading light among the final top 12 contestants and he left no one in doubt about his music qualities and, more so, his rating as a top contender for the top prize throughout the seven weeks that the spotlight was cast on them.

  • Rap act, ikechukwu shines on Nigerian Idol

Rap act, ikechukwu shines on Nigerian Idol

AFTER a brief hiatus from the music scene, Nigerian rap sensation, Ikechukwu rebounded on the Nigerian Idol studio, playing a double role on the show.

Apart from being invited as a guest judge, to complement the work of celebrity judges, Dede Mabiaku, Yinka Davies and Darey ‘Art’ Alade to oversee proceedings during the top 4 show.

Ikechukwu got a thunderous applause, as he was introduced by show anchor, Illryhmz. The dark-skinned rapper got even a louder applause as he entertained the audience with a performance of his latest work Ololo, featuring Olamide.

Ikechukwu showed his understanding of music genre as he was seen time and again critiquing performances by each of the four contestants.

Meanwhile, the remaining four contestants on the show continue to put their best foot forward, as the race for the N7.5 million cash prize inches to an end.

Still in the race are K-Peace, Preye, Dolu and Nex2 who all scaled through the last eviction hurdle which claimed Classic Tunez, who had a rather disenchanting and forgettable performance the previous week.

In what appeared like a repeat of last week’s template, the contestants were scheduled on a run of two solo performances from each, and also two duets centered around the themes Social change and Love. And on a night that expectedly had promised much, only Dolu showed up with such an overwhelmingly convincing performance to the delight of the audience and judges.

The 25-year-old from Ondo was a refreshing reminder of Whitney Houston in her prime as she performed the late diva’s hit song, I Will Always Love You. She had raised the bar for herself in the first round of performances and subsequently salvaged a night filled with inconsistent performances from the other contestants when she rendered Sam Cooke’s A change is gonna Come.

Ikechukwu could not hide his admiration for her performances as he singled her out as the leading light on the night.

“Before you started the song, I had whispered to the judges here that I would like to see if you would do enough with the song to bring out tears from my eyes. And girl, you did that. I can take off my glasses for anyone to see that it is true.

“The performances tonight were great, but someone stood out more than the others. Dolu was just above the others tonight. She is the complete Nigerian Idol we are looking for, this is how I feel. I hope she carries it across with votes,” said Ikechukwu.

Ikechukwu also advised all the contestants to scale-up on their performances.

NIGERIAN IDOL: Sther makes surprising return after eviction

Hope returned for evicted Wild Card contestant in the ongoing Nigerian Idol reality show, Esther Aritheshoma Monday, aka Sther, as she was brought back to the N7.5m race, courtesy of the judges’ lifeline.

The three celebrity judges; Darey ‘Art’ Alade, Yinka Davies and Dede Mabiaku, at the weekend, saved Sther, who was among the six previously evicted contestants. They’d used up their last window of opportunity to bring back any contestant on the show.

Show anchor, Illrymz announced the judges’ decision at the weekend amidst cheers and applause from the audience who had gathered inside the OMG Dream Studios for the third Gala Show in the Top 12 series.

Manager, Sponsorships, Etisalat Nigeria, Orah Egwu said she was surprised that the Judges saved the same contestant twice. Egwu said, “I am still stunned that the Judges saved Sther twice because they have never used their lifeline twice on a contestant. I am sure they see something promising in her.”

Responding to Egwu’s astonishment and the audience’s as well, Dede Mabiaku described the appearance of Sther as their joker in the competition. Dede said, “Bringing Sther back with our lifeline is the joker of Season 5 and we were thrilled with everybody’s reaction. Sther has been the most improved of all the contestants and we hope she will make this investment worthwhile.”

Alongside P.Scholes and Uloma, Sther had polled the least number of votes and was accordingly expected to exit the show, but for the lifeline from the judges which now guarantees her a chance to compete for the multi-million naira top prize.

Meanwhile, all the seven contestants are up for the next round of eviction through the public voting process to determine the eventual winner of the N7.5 million top spot cash prize as well as other multi-million naira juicy offers, chief among which include a recording deal with South Africa-based Universal Music label and a new Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV).

She continues the race with Ogunmoyero Modolowamu (Dolu), Oyinkepreye Deborah Toun (Preye), Godson Goodluck (Classic Tunez), Ogunrombi Kunle (K-Peace), Adigwe Brenda Ada (Brenda), and Ese-Amadasun Imuetiyan (Nex2).

The seven took to the stage at the weekend on the theme Broadway week to showcase their craft in music and attempt to curry the favour of the voting public whose votes determine who gets evicted or not.

With the theme ‘Broadway Week’, the contestants’ performances featured solo renditions as well as duets accompanied with some theatrics.

EME First Lady, Niyola, who performed her break out single “Toh Bad” on the show, joining Darey, Yinka and Dede as a guest judge.

The battle for Top 5 spots commenced with Preye leading the Broadway appearances with ‘Summertime’ by Porgy and Bess to the admiration of the Judges. Thereafter, the  Fuji master, K Peace took his performance some notches higher with a superlative rendition of the Lion King soundtrack, ‘Can You Feel the Love Tonight’ and received a standing ovation from the studio audience after his performance. Dolu held the Judges and studio audience spellbound with her performance of Annie’s ‘Opportunity’ and guest judge, Niyola confessed that she was blown away with gusto performance.

It was however not a good night for Nex2, whose performance of ‘This is your City’ by Annie failed to cut it for the Judges who submitted that he made a wrong choice of song. However, Brenda lifted the mood by delivering a classic performance of Barelis’ ‘She Used to Be Mine’, which drew applauses from the studio audience and Judges, especially Yinka who said that Brenda pulled a nerve in her.

Classiq Tunez took off from where Brenda stopped and delivered a jaw-dropping Falsetto of ‘Tommorow’ after which, amidst tears, Sther wrapped up the night’s solo performances with an emotional delivery of Peter Pan’s ‘Do you remember’.

  • Three evicted from Nigerian Idol Top 12 stage

Three evicted from Nigerian Idol Top 12 stage

Last weekend, Ayoka, Modele and Prime were evicted from the Nigerian Idol Season 5, after making it to the Top 12 stage.

Expectedly, their eviction recorded a major upset, as fans see them as some of the few outstanding talents on the show.

The trio mark the first set of evictees to leave the house from the group of top 12 finalists unveiled recently by franchise owners, Optima Media Group (OMG) in partnership with sponsors Etisalat Nigeria, Payporte, Cadbury Nigeria, Dabur Toothpaste, So-Klin, ORS, Zaron, Ellis Suites, Tantalizers and Cool fm

For Ayoka, the news of her eviction could not have been anything less than shock, as she broke down, only to be consoled by show presenter, Illrhymz.

“I am disappointed obviously,” says Ayoka while reacting to her eviction. “Nobody will be happy, having to put in a lot of work into what I came here for, but it is fine. I have reassured myself that this cannot be the last for me; it is not possible. I eventually have to stop now, work on certain details to get better and I will be back. I will have to work with what I have been able to achieve here which is the platform. I don’t have any regret.”

Also speaking, another evictee, Prime described his experience as ‘wonderful’ while expressing his readiness to maximize the gains provided by the platform.

He said: “I think it has been wonderful. Seriously, I have really learnt a lot from my co-contestants, the music director, the choreographer and others around. I think I am fit enough to go back to the industry, I think I am fit enough to start my own stuff, and since I have a platform like this, I feel great. Though I was not really expecting this to happen, but it is fine.”

Like Ayoka, the third evictee, Modele, could not hide her disappointment when she said, “I am disappointed, but I believe God has His own plans for me. My expectation was to win. We all came here to give the competition a try, hoping to win it. We know just one person will eventually win it. I had cold on the night of our performance, I was not expecting that. I was losing breath while singing. When I opened my mouth, I felt like coughing and cutting it. I was not expecting that. It started some days before, but God understands why it happened.”

To this end, celebrity judges; Darey ‘Art’ Alade, Yinka Davies and Dede Mabiaku, urged the voting public to eschew sentiments and help to sustain the values which the show tries to promote.

Meanwhile, the remaining nine contestants have been put up for another round of eviction. They include Ogunmoyero Modolowamu (Dolu), Oyinkepreye Deborah Toun (Preye), Godson Goodluck (Classic Tunez), Ogunrombi Kunle (K-Peace), Esther Aritheshoma Monday (Sther), Adigwe Brenda Ada (Brenda), Paul Manuwa (P.Scholes), Okemiri Uloma Margaret (Uloma) and Ese-Amadasun Imuetiyan (Nex2).

The show promises a grand prize of N7.5 million, a recording deal with South Africa-based Universal Music label and a brand new SUV car to the overall winner.
