  • NIPR seeks post-election national cohesion

The Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) Monday sought an olive branch and unity among the different political actors that participated in the 2019 general elections.

The institute said that there is a need to draw the attention of political actors to the dangers of politics of bitterness and hatred that keep undermining the unity, integrity and corporate existence of the country.

It’s President and chairman of Council, Mallam Mukhtar Sirajo made the call at the press conference on its 2019 Annual General Meeting on “National Cohesion” in Abuja.

He recalled that “Nigeria is a unique and blessed country, remains one of the most endowed nations on earth, in terms of human and natural resources. Unfortunately, this same entity that once lived in unity and harmony, fought battles to keep other nations together in peace, is now fast becoming a colony of hostility, aggression and den of terror.

“The envy of other nations is now confronted with a strange future of hatred, intolerance and disaffection, tending towards the brink of collapse. This would cause patriotic minds to ask, what went wrong? What has happened to our once cherished culture of unity?”

Sirajo urged the citizenry to begin to take issues of national unity very seriously given the key positions it occupies in meeting the expectations of citizens and promoting national development.

According to him, no entity grows or develops in disunity. Insisting on the efficacy of peace in national coexistence, he said “Let’s go back to our unique culture of love for one another, strong bond of brotherhood that know no tribe or religion, habit of hospitality that does not emphasize state of origin, and let’s embrace tolerance as an option for co-existence.”

On the AGM, he disclosed that nation building is one of the core mandate of the institute which was why it decided to lead the discourse on National Cohesion.

He said that being a star event, the institute has selected a competent mind, with deep knowledge of the topic and understanding of workings of the Nigerian system, Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah as keynote speaker, while the Vice President of Nigeria, Prof. Yemi Osibanjo is expected to be the Special Guest of Honour.

Sirajo said that the NIPR has resolved to offer real time value to efficient society and has, therefore, decides to engage both the government and the governed on critical areas of nation-building.

He posited that the institute will remain alive to its basic responsibility of reputation management, which engages effective relationship building and promotion of goodwill as a potent strategy to accomplish goals.

He dropped the hint that that the institute will continue to scan the Nigerian environment, analyze the trends, predicting consequences and carrying out programmes of action for the benefit of both parties involved- the public and the government.

Continuing, he said “We urge the government as a matter of urgent importance to employ the services of professionals in handling reputation issues as the current spate of encouraging quackery on the system is totally unacceptable.”
