Nigeria Maritime University: FG dissatisfied with delayed construction at permanent site

The ongoing delays in the construction of the permanent site for the Nigeria Maritime University (NMU) in Okerenkoko, Delta state, have drawn significant attention from the federal government.

NMU plays a crucial role in providing Nigeria’s youth with essential skills for the maritime industry, a key sector for the country’s economic diversification and growth.

During a recent visit, pro-chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Mr. Abdullahi Nedanda Bardi, expressed his frustration with the slow pace of development at the permanent site.

While acknowledging that the temporary facilities in Kurutie community are sufficient, Bardi emphasized that the completion of the permanent campus is vital for the university to fully realize its mission.

He further highlighted that the university’s focus on the blue economy offers a unique opportunity for Nigerian youth to receive professional training and secure meaningful employment in the maritime sector.

He emphasised that the development of the permanent site is integral to realizing the university’s strategic goals, which include fostering a skilled workforce equipped to meet the demands of the maritime industry.

To expedite the construction process, Bardi called for a collaborative approach involving various stakeholders, including government bodies, local communities, university management, faculty, and council members.

He asserted that a collective effort is necessary to overcome the current delays attributed to development partners such as the Nigerian Maritime and Safety Agency (NIMASA).

Bardi said they were committed to investigating the underlying issues affecting progress at the permanent site.

He indicated a readiness to take decisive action if required, which may include escalating the matter to relevant authorities to ensure that construction activities resume and continue without further hindrance.

He said the successful realisation of the NMU’s permanent site could not only enhance educational opportunities for Nigerian youth but also contribute significantly to the growth of the maritime sector, positioning Nigeria as a leading player in maritime training and services in the region.

The pro-chancellor emphasised the rigorous training provided at the university, equipping students with the skills to survive and thrive in the challenging maritime environment.

He stated: “This comprehensive training covers various disciplines, including engineering, maritime administration, and fisheries and aquatic engineering.”

The vice-chancellor, Prof. Emmanuel Adigio, echoed the sentiment, stating that the university’s management is eagerly awaiting the completion of the permanent site to enable them to relocate faculties and introduce new programmes.
