  • Maritime varsity bill tears presidency, lawmakers apart

Maritime varsity bill tears presidency, lawmakers apart

The federal government’s plan to upgrade the Maritime Academy of Nigeria, MAN, Oron, into a university may have hit a brick wall with the rejection of the Federal University of Maritime Studies, ( FUMS ) bill by the National Assembly.

Findings by The Nation revealed that the proposal to upgrade MAN into a university has pitted several government agencies and lawmakers against each other with many of them working at cross-purposes such that admission into existing programmes for this year’s enrolment may be jeopardised.

Investigation by our correspondent further revealed that the rejection of the bill by the lawmakers informed the setting up of an ad hoc technical committee with members drawn from the House of Representative Committee on Maritime Safety, Education and Administration, the Nigerian University Commission, NUC and the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA.

Informed sources confided in our correspondent that at the public hearing in Abuja, NIMASA reportedly kicked over the upgrade of MAN into a university, arguing matter-of-factly that MAN should maintain its current status as there was already a newly accredited Maritime University at Okerenkoko in Warri South, Delta state.

NIMASA’s objection, informed sources further said, may have been fueled by the paucity of funds, a argument it has canvassed to show lack of interest by the Presidency to commit funds to two maritime universities under the present administration, which considers the ongoing ‘strong reforms agenda’ at the Academy as the first step to repositioning the institution towards achieving a reconnect with its lost mandate.

Speaking in a telephone interview with our correspondent, Preye Kinsley, an alumnus of the Academy seems to share the same sentiments with NIMASA, noting that the Academy should focus on its core mandate of providing seafarers for the maritime sub-sector.

NIMASA’s reluctance notwithstanding, members of the House Committee and some stakeholders including the government of Akwa Ibom state and various Oro nation socio-cultural and political unions have expressed support for the upgrade.

Expectedly, this year’s admission was put on hold by the restructuring Committee in addition to delay in the resumption of National Diploma and Higher National Diploma students, as directed by the six-man Committee on the Restructuring and Repositioning of the Academy.

The Nation was reliably informed that there is a committee working on the restructuring and repositioning of MAN, with a mandate to identify a number of concerns, one of which is the poor and unacceptable hostel accommodation for cadets amongst others.

Our source, who is very well informed on developments at the Academy also told us that of the over 700 personnel in the staff roll, junior staff is only 100 and the rest senior cadre, “how do you explain that?” he asked.

Our source revealed that personnel of the Academy, particularly the senior management level are on the same page with the reforms agenda and are cooperating with the Committee. He assured that the committee is composed of professionals who are beyond witch hunt or petty, personal agenda.

Findings further revealed that ship owners have for a while become reluctant in recruiting MAN Oron graduates of nautical science, based on curriculum reservations and perceived poor teaching quality and lack of basic training facilities/equipment at the Academy.

However, one time rector of MAN, Chief Nseyen Ebong agreed that quality has become a major challenge in the certification of cadets of the Academy, he debunked claims that products of the institution were unmarketable and uncompetitive. The former rector noted that cadets of the Academy are on top in academics and practical endeavors in many maritime institutions across the world.

“I have said it many times before that some of our cadets excel and are leading in both academic and practical training exercises in most maritime academies in Europe, Asia and America. But when those in power begin to play politics with funding of the Academy, there has arisen a gradual fall in standards and quality, you cannot take that away as a natural consequence. So what we have at MAN today is the crime of political recklessness and arrogance,” he said.

  • Tell Nigerians Maina’s whereabouts, Labour Party tells FG

Tell Nigerians Maina’s whereabouts, Labour Party tells FG

The Labour Party (LP ) has said that the federal government should accept its complicity in the questionable recall of former Chairman of the Presidential Task Force on Pension Reforms, Abdulrasheed Maina, saying the government should tell Nigerians his whereabouts.

The party said since the government recalled and reinstated in, they must know where he is at the moment and should therefore arrest and prosecute him on allegations of corruption leveled against him.

Speaking at a news conference in Abuja, National Chairman of the Party, Dr Mike Omotoso, said “You will recall that Maina was sacked by the last administration and placed on Wanted List. We are calling on the federal government to arrest and prosecute Maina if they know where he is. Since they were the ones that brought him back and reinstated him, they should also bring him out now, arrest and prosecute him”.

He said the recall of Maina was an embarrassment to the country and made mockery of the anti corruption crusade of the Buhari administration.

Also speaking, National Publicity Secretary of the party, Everett Ifendu accused the former national chairman, Abdulkadir Abdulsalam of continued impersonation, saying he had since been suspended following serious allegations levelled against him by the party’s governorship candidate in Anambra.

“We want to correct some misconceptions about our party. There is no leadership tussle in our party. Our National Chairman is Dr Mike Omotoso”, said Ifendu.

According to her, the party had filed a formal complaint with the police who are currently investigating the disappearance of party property including a vehicle.

The party lamented the inability of many governments to pay salaries of workers despite the bail out from their  federal government and the Paris Club refund, describing the trend as anti-people and a modern form of slavery.

It however urged the federal government to launch an investigation into how the states governments utilized the budget support fund as well as the Paris Club Refund given them by the federal government, aside their federal allocation and internally generated revenue.

  • NCC moves to checkmate SIM Swap fraud

NCC moves to checkmate SIM Swap fraud

Ms Helen Obi, Head of Zonal Operations, Nigerian Communications Commission ( NCC ) on Friday said that the commission has put in place a regulation to checkmate SIM Swap fraud.

Obi said this in an interview in Jos.

A SIM is a smart card inside a mobile phone, carrying identification number unique to the owner.

While SIM Swap is the process of replacing your existing SIM with a new SIM and moving your existing number, data etc. to a new SIM.

She said that the new regulation put in place to stop SIM Swap fraud was in the interest of customers.

According to her, SIM SWAP fraud has a lot of issues attached to it because often times, you find a lot of people who are not the owners of these numbers going to do SIM SWAP at various centres.

“We have cases of fraudulent activities done on people’s bank account as a result of SIM SWAP and they complain to the commission expecting that the commission would compensate them.

“We have now put a regulation in place advising these operators to demand for certain requirements and criteria before allowing SIM swapped.

She said that anybody coming for SIM Swap must prove that the number that was been requested to be swapped belonged to him/her.

Obi said that once that is done, there would be no complain and the operators would not be left in doubt.

“ So it is all in the interest of consumers that we are doing this because of the complaints, especially the one that has to do with fraudulent activities on the consumer’s bank account.

“What we as a regulatory authority keep advising and encouraging our consumers to do is that they should also help the commission to serve them better by following laid down rules.

Some subscribers, said that Network providers were putting them through stress to have a SIM replaced.

They said that they were being asked to bring court affidavit, national identification card, SIM pack amongst other requirements.

Mrs Ola Adedeji, an ICT expert, applauded the idea of asking subscribers to identify themselves properly before replacing lost SIM.

Adedeji said that her problem with the network providers was that subscribers were not adequately informed about the new development.

“It is okay to ask a subscriber, who lost a SIM card and want a replacement, to properly identify himself or herself before a re-issue.

“But my problem with the network providers is that they should educate customers properly so as to enable us prepare ourselves before coming for replacement.

Mr Collins Okeke, a trader at Lugbe, said that he was not happy with the development of going through the stress of retrieving a misplaced SIM as network providers are asking them to bring so many things.

Okeke said that last time he went to do a welcome back at GLO office, he was asked to swear affidavit because he did not get his SIM pack.

“I am not happy with the development because I did not know of all these protocols as I was not previously informed.

“NCC and network providers should embark on serious sensitisation campaigns to properly educate subscribers on the need to provide the items for proper identification.’’

  • Governing councils want colleges granted university status

Governing councils want colleges granted university status

The Chairmen of the governing councils of four colleges of education which the Goodluck Jonathan administration upgraded to universities have asked the Federal Government to effect the change.

The institutions are Adeyemi College of Education in Ondo State, Federal College of Education, Zaria, Kaduna State, Federal College of Education, Kano, and Alvan Ikoku College of Education, Owerri.

The past administration had pronounced the colleges universities of education in its last days in order to train teachers for Nigerian schools.

However, the Muhammadu Buhari administration reversed the decision on assumption of office because of the lack of resources.

In a statement in Osogbo on Friday, Mr John Fasogbon on behalf of the council chairmen,  appealed to the Federal Government to upgrade the institutions to universities.

Fasogbon, who is the Chairman of the Governing Council of Alvan Ikoku College of Education, said granting the institutions university status would enable them to produce  teachers for schools.

He said the step would help in realising the Federal Government’s effort to develop the education sector.

“We want to appeal to the Honourable Minister to use his good offices to urgently re-pronounce the affected universities in order to make them functional for the benefit of Nigerians,’’ he said.

Fasogbon also appealed to the government to allow the tenure of the governing councils to lapse before appointing new ones.

  • Taraba speaker lauds state govt for recruiting 3,000 teachers

Taraba speaker lauds state govt for recruiting 3,000 teachers

Mr Abel Diah, the Speaker of Taraba House of Assembly, on Friday lauded the state government for recruiting 3,000 secondary school teachers to boost education in the state.

He said the massive recruitment of teachers would turnaround the education narratives in the state.

He said this in Jalingo while distributing appointment letters to 200 of the successful teachers from Sardauna Local Government area of the state.

The Speaker said that the injection of the 3,000 teachers into secondary schools would go a long way in improving academic standards in the state.

Diah urged teachers from his community to key into the governor’s rescue mission by contributing their quota to reposition the state’s secondary school education.

“I congratulate you, the 200 successful candidates from Sardauna Local Government Area on your success at the recent teacher’s recruitment examinations by the government.

“The recruitment of 3,000 secondary school teachers across the 16 Local Government areas is a practical step to improve on the standard of education in the state,” he said.

Mr Gibeon Kataps, a former Secretary to Taraba Government and community leader, commended the efforts of the governor in repositioning education in the state.

Kataps implored the teachers to work hard to justify the confidence reposed in them by the people of the state.

  • Bitcoin after the second hard fork goes for the new all time highs

Bitcoin after the second hard fork goes for the new all time highs

Another hard fork on the Bitcoin is already behind us. This time it allowed to create Bitcoin Gold (First hard fork created Bitcoin Cash).

It happened in 24th of October and did not cause any bigger changes in the volatility or the price. For the past few days the price was moving very technically just like nothing significant ever happened here.

Since Monday, after reaching the all time highs over the weekend, the price was undergoing a bearish correction and apparently it already ended on Wednesday. During the downswing, the price created a wedge formation (purple lines). Wedge is a trend continuation pattern and it suggested us an eventual comeback to the up trend. That optimistic view was also supported by the fact that the price reached and bounced from the long-term up trendline (red) connecting the higher lows since the middle of September (lows after the latest heavy drop on the BTC).

The actual buy signal was triggered yesterday when the price broke the resistance on the 5770 USD (green area).  Breaking that level opens us a way to the new all time highs. Currently the green area is the closest support. Positive scenario for Bitcoin will be denied in the mid-term, once the price will break the red line but chances for that are now limited.

  • Akeredolu flags off distribution of 2.9million insecticide nets in Ondo

Akeredolu flags off distribution of 2.9million insecticide nets in Ondo

Gov. Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State on Friday in Akure flagged off the distribution of 2.9 million long lasting  insecticide treated mosquito nets to residents of the state.

Akeredolu, who was represented by Dr Jibayo Oyewole, the Special Adviser on Health Matters to the governor, noted that malaria still remained a major public health problem in Nigeria despite  preventable measures.

He said that malaria constituted a major economic burden in the country because about N148 billion  was lost annually in the form of treatment cost and prevention.

According to him, statistics have shown that more than 60 per cent of hospital attendance was due to malaria and three out of every 10 admission beds were due to malaria.

The governor said that the critical elements needed to achieve positive change in fight against malaria was the change in behavioural and social norms with regards to sleeping inside treated mosquito nets.

“The ownership and use of the nets has remained the most cost effective and easily deployed methods for malaria prevention.

“Significant reduction in malaria related deaths and disability over the years have been attributed to the massive promotion of the ownership and use of the nets,” he said.

The governor said the distribution of the nets was to ensure universal coverage of the populace in the state.

Similarly, the governor’s wife, Mrs Betty Ayanwu-Akeredolu, said malaria infection still posed a great threat to health and socio-economic wellbeing of many Nigerians.

Ayanwu-Akeredolu stressed the need for concerted efforts to fight malaria.

The governor’s wife, who was honoured as net ambassador in the state by the Catholic Relief Service ( CRS ), encouraged the people to use the nets correctly so that there would be effectiveness of the campaign.

She said nobody should sell the nets because some organisations and government paid for them.

“These nets do not come free, but a lot of funds have gone into it; therefore let us use the nets for what they are meant for and not for fishing but sleeping inside them after hanging for 24 hours.

“I have committed myself for Ondo State that is free of malaria and if we all make concerted efforts, we will create the Ondo State we deserve and history will not forget us,” she said.

Mrs Rebecca Bassey, the representative of Catholic Relief Services, said that over 16.5 million nets were being distributed in six states in Nigeria,  Ondo State being one of them.

Bassey noted that the state had demonstrated itself to be a dependable and reliable partner, considering its show of love for giving safe and conducive environment for the campaign.

She added that the exercise would no doubt contribute immensely to collective efforts towards eliminating malaria from the state and Nigeria in general.

“National Malaria Elimination Programme (NMEP) of the Federal Ministry of Health and CRS with funding from Global Fund are distributing over 16.5million nets in six states in Nigeria including Ondo State,” she said.

According to her, CRS has been implementing programme in Nigeria for over 17 years.

  • My husband stabs me with broken bottles, wife tells court

My husband stabs me with broken bottles, wife tells court

A housewife, Sadiat Abas, on Friday, told an Idi-Ogungun Customary Court at Agodi, Ibadan, that her husband Abiola Abas, always stabbed her with broken bottles, each time they quarreled.

Abiola had urged the court to dissolve his 22 year-old marriage to Sadiat, citing constant fighting and defiant attitude.

Sadiat, in her defence, said her husband never treated her as a loving wife but always broke bottles to stab her whenever they had a quarrel.

She further said that the petitioner had succeeded in turning their four children against her.

The respondent urged the court to uphold the request of her husband so as to have peace of mind.

Earlier, the petitioner had told the bar that the estranged wife was a trouble maker and never listened to instructions nor recognised him as the head of the family.

He said that his wife used to destroy his property such as car and house equipment whenever they had a misunderstanding.

He prayed the court to dissolve the marriage to avoid further trouble.

The President of the court, Chief Mukaila Balogun, dissolved the marriage and awarded custody of the first child to the petitioner.

Balogun directed that the remaining three children should be with Sadiat and ordered the petitioner to pay N9,000 monthly as feeding allowance for the children.

He warned both parties to stay away from each other and desist from fomenting trouble.
