  • Phew! The life of a military child

Phew! The life of a military child

Life they say isn’t a bed of roses; such is the narrative of a military child.

Being raised by a military personnel is definitely not a bed laced with roses but one that has scattered stints of thorns along the way.

A military person is first a human being; therefore performs all the basic biological expectations of a typical homo sapiens .

However, the difference between a child raised by a “bloody civilian” and that of a “military personnel”, is in the way they stress and enforce some enduring military tenets like discipline and respect.

First, let’s examine a few of the challenges faced by the military child. There is the overwhelming likelihood that military children hardly see or interact with their parents. Very often, he or she (that is, the parents) is sent on assignment, sometimes outside the country. This becomes a recurring decimal in the parent-child relationship.

This creates a gap between the military personnel and his or her family, especially the children. Family moments like regular conversations, outings, picnics etc., that are very important condiments in the making of a healthy family relationship are mostly absent.

A significant number of military children are restricted to mostly the four walls of their homes; they hardly have the opportunity to freely explore and interact with their immediate environment.

To them, the voice of their parents is one that triggers feelings of fear and trepidation. You’d see some children run to hiding immediately they hear the voice of their parents.

At certain stages in the psycho-social development of every child, there is a fierce and urgent need to mingle and form their identities with those of their peers. However, the case seems different for a child of military upbringing; parents are usually strict on their children interesting with their peers.

God help the boy that misses his way in his juvenile need to woo a military girl-child; that day he would literally smell his brain and will NEVER make such a grave error because the kind of slap and beatings he will freely receive will leave an indelible impression in his consciousness for life.

Sometimes, you will almost think that your parents are “monitoring spirits” will the excessive phone calls you get when you gain admission into higher institution.

In all honesty, the kind of trainings – discipline, respect, integrity etc., you get from a military upbringing is totally invaluable.

It sets the pace for life and living and enables you to be able to easily adapt, thrive and survive in whatever endeavour they find themselves.

There’s a usual saying that “nothing last forever”, therefore, the circular, predictable and sometimes banal life of a military child will surely come to an end. As time passes, the parents begin to lose those extreme claws of clinching to their wards because they (the children) begin to come of age and become independent adults.

  • Anambra poll: INEC trains staff on violence mitigation

Anambra poll: INEC trains staff on violence mitigation

The Independent National Electoral Commission ( INEC ) has commenced the training of its officers on the application of Election Mitigation and Advocacy Tool ( EVMAT ).

The training, being conducted in Awka,  capital of Anambra, is in preparation for the Nov. 18 governorship election in the state.

INEC Director of Voter Education and Publicity, Oluwole Osaze-Uzzi, made the disclosure in a statement issued to newsmen on Wednesday in Abuja.

Osaze-Uzzi said the training was organised by The Electoral Institute (TEI), training and research arm of INEC.

He said the training was aimed at developing the capacity of the participants to deploy violence reduction mechanisms to minimise electoral risks during the governorship poll.

The statement quoted the Acting Director-General of TEI, Dr Sa’ad Idris, as saying that proper application of EVMAT was key in reducing risk of violence during election.

Idris said the training was geared toward equipping the participants with the necessary skills to effectively administer EVMAT in their respective local government areas.

“The standardised EVMAT offers unique opportunities for all stakeholders in the electoral process to effectively prevent and mitigate election violence.

“The instrument possesses higher predictive power that can help appreciate main risk factors through early warning that may inform proactive response.

“INEC in recent past has deployed the EVMAT instrument in a bid to test the pulse of various players in order to accurately predict and advise on actions to be taken by those responsible for securing elections.

“The effective application of this instrument will determine the level of accuracy of report and risk factor mapping emanating therefrom,” he said.

According to Idris, the participants were carefully selected to receive the training before being deployed to the various local government areas to administer the instruments which would be analysed and coded by a data analyst.

He added that successful risk mapping could only be achieved using accurate data.

  • ‘$18bn Dangote refinery will boost Nigeria’s foreign investment’

‘$18bn Dangote refinery will boost Nigeria’s foreign investment’

The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria ( IPMAN ), western zone, on Wednesday says that the 18 billion dollars Dangote refinery will boost the country’s foreign investment when it finally comes on stream.

The Zonal Chairman, Alhaji Debo Ahmed, said this in an interview in Lagos against the backdrop of arrears of N800 billion government owed marketers on subsidy.

The Dangote refinery, which has the capacity to refine 650,000 barrels of crude oil per day with petrochemical plant which will produce 780 KTPA Polypropylene, 500 KTPA of Polyethylene, is expected to come on stream by 2019.

Ahmed said the multi-billion dollar project, when completed, would finally address the challenges facing the downstream sector of the oil and gas industry and also aid the nation’s economy.

He said that the refinery would also attract more foreign investments into the country’s economy and boost oil and gas revenue , while urging Federal Government to intensify support for the actualisation of the project.

The IPMAN boss urged government to formulate policies that would liberalise the market to promote downstream sector.

He said that government had a lot of roles to play in setting the right policies for a robust and investment friendly atmosphere.

According to him, the refinery is expected to create over 300,000 jobs and eradicate petroleum products importation in the country by the first quarter of 2019 when it’s finally completed.

“The refinery, when completed, would save the country billions of dollars foreign exchange on petroleum product importation and also create foreign exchange earning to Nigeria from the savings.

“The refinery would also complement the existing refineries in the country to boost refined products and would crash the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) because the product is refined in the country.

“Therefore, it will save some costs incurred in the import market and crash price of petrol in the market,’’ he said.

Ahmed, however, appealed to the National Assembly to expedite action on the passage of the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) that would reshape the oil and gas industry.

He said that the pending bill had affected the economy’s growth of the industry, adding that the passage of the governance aspect of the bill was a right direction but other bills needed to be addressed urgently.
