  • Inside the ‘risky’ life of Bobrisky

Inside the ‘risky’ life of Bobrisky

Bobrisky’s story is not easy to tell. The first problem is deciding what pronoun to use. By the circumstances of his birth, ‘he’ is the right pronoun, but by what Bobrisky has chosen, ‘she’ is  correct.

“Tani bro e? (Who is your bro?). I’m a fine babe,” Bobrisky once replied a commentator who referred to him as a man.

There is also no agreement on whether or not he is a transvestite or just a crossdresser.

    Who is Bobrisky?

A primary school mate said he had always behaved like a woman trapped in a  man’s body.

In a video, which was uploaded on YouTube on January 19, 2018, a dark man sporting a white bathrobe on a white t-shirt, is sitting on a brown sofa.

There is a gold chain around his neck and in his right hand is a wad of N1,000 notes and a glass of wine.

He pulls out note after note with his left hand and places it on the waist of a light-skinned dancer in a black tight-fitting trouser and crop top, shaking a slim bottom in his face.

The man kisses the tips of his left palm and touches the dancer’s waist excitedly before the video stops playing.

The video is titled ‘Bobrisky twerking for her sugar daddy’.

The dancer in the 11-second video is popular transvestite, Idris Olanrewaju Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, his name on social media platform, Snap Chat.

Idris, from Ijebu Igbo in Ogun State, was born male on August 31, 1992 at Ebute Meta, Lagos Mainland.

He attended secondary school at the prestigious King’s College, Lagos, before bagging a BSc from the University of Lagos (UNILAG).

He was a very good dancer, choreographer and make-up artist at the university. In May 2019, Bobrisky stated on his instagram profile that his pronouns are “she” and “her”.

    Going viral

It is not clear when Idris became the cross-dressing Bobrisky, but he went viral in October 2016, when President Muhammadu Buhari’s social media aide, Bashir Ahmad, pulled out of appearing with him on a social media panel in Abuja.

“The organisers invited me to speak on the fact that people are talking about Bobrisky,” the then 25-year-old told AFP.

He added: “Withdrawing wasn’t nice. In Nigeria, the majority of people here judge you so fast.”

According to AFP, he often recounted online how his lifestyle was funded by a rich, mystery man he referred to only as “bae.

A few years earlier, a video surfaced of Bobrisky being stripped by the police of the female clothing he was wearing. Two sachets of water – pseudo breasts – were pulled out of the low neck gown.

    Controversies

Bobrisky, who turned 28 on Saturday, fled his Lekki, Lagos neighbourhood to evade arrest following the deployment of policemen to scuttle his planned birthday celebrations.

He had planned a birthday bash at the Pearls Gardens in Lekki Phase 1 on Saturday and another at the Paradise Boat Club, Victoria Island on Sunday.

But Police Commissioner Zubairu Muazu ordered the deployment of water-tight security to ensure the party did not hold and also arrest Bobrisky and other crossdressers or homosexuals who planned to attend.

The Nation gathered that five suspected members of Bobrisky’s club were arrested for breach of the public peace and indecency.

According to the police, the government would not allow continuous breach of existing laws, noting that allowing the public display of actions that could corrupt young people was inimical to national consciousness.

Earlier in the week, the Director-General of the National Council for Arts and Culture, Otunba Olusegun Runsewe, threatened to go after Bobrisky and others like him, describing the cross-dresser as “a disgrace to the nation.” Bobrisky replied by saying Runsewe was a small fry.

The police had earlier in the year warned all homosexuals to flee the country or be dealt with in accordance with the Anti-Same Sex Marriage Law which prescribes a 14-year jail term for all persons involved in a homosexual relationship.

Former Public Relations Officer of the Zone 2 Police Command, Mrs Dolapo Badmos, had said: “If you are homosexually inclined, Nigeria is not a place for you. There is a law here that criminalises homosexual clubs, associations, and organisations with penalties of up to 14 years in jail.

“So, if you are a homosexual in nature, leave the country or face prosecution. But before you say, ‘does this matter?’ Kindly note that anything against the law of the land is criminal and all crimes will be punished accordingly no matter how small you think it is.”

    What the law says

The law Badmos is referring to is the Same-Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act of 2013. It says a person who registers, operates or participates in gay clubs, societies or organisations, directly or indirectly makes a public show of same-sex amorous relationship in Nigeria commits an offence and is liable on conviction to a term of 10 years. Anyone convicted of entering into a same-sex marriage contract or civil union faces up to 14 years imprisonment.

    Pronouns controversy

Following the police’s raid, Nigerians on social media were divided over the use of the pronoun he to refer to Bobrisky.

Bisi Alimi, a gay man and advocate for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights cautioned that the right pronoun for Bobrisky is ‘she’ and ‘her’.

“Dear #Nigeria allies, the correct pronoun for #Bobrisky is “She/Her”. Using this will help reduce stigma and show that you really care. You can’t use a wrong pronoun and say you are an ally,” he tweeted.

“Just In: Bobrisky on the run as Police Storms. Shutdown venue if his 27th birthday celebration in Lekki, chase away everyone,” Iselaiye tweeted to which Ogunmuyiwa replied, “HER!!! Her pronouns are she/her!!! And this us transmisogynistic violence.”

Another user, @whoislateef, mockingly asked, “So which cell will they put Bobrisky Female cell: Naaaah Male cell: Honeymoon.”

What does the future hold for the like of Bobrisky?

A 2017 survey by NOI Polls compared attitudes towards LGBT people in Nigeria against a 2015 poll.

It found a seven per cent increase in acceptance of LGBT people, and a nine per cent rise to 39 per cent of those surveyed who think that LGBT people should be allowed equal access to public services, such as healthcare, education and housing.

However, the poll showed a four per cent increase to 90 per cent of Nigerians who support the criminalisation of same-sex relationships, and no change in the proportion of Nigerians who believe that the country would be a better place with no LGBT people, also 90 per cent.

Will Nigerian society ever accept cross-dressing and other LGBT lifestyles, such as Bobrisky’s? Only time will tell.

  • Tiv/Jukun crisis: Slain Taraba Priest buried amidst tears

The Catholic Community in Taraba state was on Tuesday laid to rest the remains of Rev. Fr. David Tanko, a Catholic priest who was killed in Takum last Wednesday.

Tanko was gruesomely gunned down and set ablaze with his white Toyota Corolla car. He burnt beyond recognition. He was 42 years.

He was reportedly in charge of St. Peter’s Catholic Parish in Amadu, a Tiv settlement in Takum local government area of Taraba state.

He had gone to Takum to see his fellow clergymen and was killed on his way back to Amadu, between Kasuwan Haske and Tor Tser.

His death came as a result of the raging crisis between Jukun and Tiv in southern Taraba.

The crisis is an offshoot of a lingering feud based on a claim by the Jukun that the Tiv are “settlers,” in Taraba State and have no ownership right to the land they occupy and should leave.

Tanko was buried at the Our Lady Queen of Peace Cathedral, Jalingo.

    His co-parishioners were all tears.

The Bishop of Catholic Diocese, Jalingo, Most Rev. Charles Hammawa, who presided over the mass for Tanko’s interment, described the deceased as a lover of peace who paid the supreme price with his life in the most inhuman way.

Hammawa said: “We are only strengthened and comforted by our Christian faith of surrendering all things to God and faith in the resurrection of the dead and life everlasting.

“Fr Tanko was part of the peace efforts initiated by me to help in bringing an end to the crisis between the Tiv and Jukun.

“He was a good man, a good priest, diligent, hard-working, amiable and peaceful.

‘’He had never set out to offend anyone. He was also a prayerful person.

“He is the kind of person Nigeria needs, to be able to come out of the quagmire and mess we are in today.

‘’A person who will serve selflessly without bias, he was.

“I am convinced that Tanko is with God in heaven and interceding for us and for the end of hostilities and unwanted killings in the country.

“May his death end all the ugly and despicable human acts.”

Hammawa charged government at all levels to protect lives and properties in the country.

“Government has the resources, constitutional powers, the institutions and the machinery to stop crises.

“There should be an end to lip service and deceit especially when it concerns security of lives and property,” the bishop said.

Taraba state Chairman of Christian Association of Nigeria, Isaiah Jirapye said the death of the young priest was a great loss to the church.

It was gathered that Tanko’s death sparked a blame-game between Jukun and Tiv on who really killed the peace broker.

His assassination also caused anxiety in the state and sapped hopes for reconciliation between Tiv and Jukun and raised more fears about the deteriorating security in Taraba state.

His death is also a puzzle to the Taraba State Police commissioner, Alkassam Sanusi, who has been given marching orders by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu, to fish out his killers.

Adamu has directed the DIG in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) to provide “additional forensic and other investigative assets” to the Taraba State Police Command to aid investigations into the incident.

President Muhammadu Buhari called on the government and people of Benue and Taraba States to “exercise restraint and stop escalation of the feud.”

The President directed Governor Darius Ishaku of Taraba State and Samuel Ortom of Benue, the Tor Tiv and the Aku Uka, religious and community leaders in the two closely tied states and top security operatives, put together by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), to meet today, examine and bring to end all issues underlying persistent violent clashes between Jukun and Tiv ethnic groups.”

The meeting of the opinion stakeholders holds at the Yar’Adua Centre, Abuja.

Governor Darius Ishaku, host of the meeting, said the meeting will find a lasting solution to the Tiv/Jukun crisis.

Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State is among the key stakeholders at the meeting, Ishaku said in a statement.

“Federal and state legislators, speakers of the state houses of assembly (Benue and Taraba) security chiefs, other prominent sons and daughters and representatives of youth groups of Tiv and Jukun in Taraba State will be in attendant,” Ishaku said.

A police van was set ablaze by an angry mob that had stormed the mall.

A video posted on Twitter and confirmed by some residents showed a body on the floor as gunshots rent the air.

Another video showed a police van burning.

A third clip filmed by a motorist showed a man masked with a handkerchief wielding a cutlass.

An actress, Belindah Effah, who was caught in the fracas, claimed that hoodlums had hijacked the protest.

She added that the men had been attacking motorists and called for government’s help.

“Jakande area is very unsafe right now; Area boys everywhere. Everyone ran and left their cars just now.

“As I was about to run out, the boys carrying machetes and stones told me it’s not me they are after, they are looking for South Africans to kill.

“These same boys vandalised some cars. I saw one of them stone a car and broke the windshield.

“After a while, they came to our car and asked for some money. They have blocked the Jakande Road and passengers are so afraid. Government please come to our aid,” she wrote on Twitter.

  • Xenophobic Attacks: Bafana Bafana vs Chipolopolo friendly in limbo

The lyrics by late reggae legend Bob Marley that “when the rain falls, it doesn’t fall on one man’s house top” best described current development as the xenophobic attack in South Africa is on verge of truncating a friendly match between South Africa and Zambia.

The match fixed for Saturday which should have served as the first in charge for new Bafana Bafana coach Molefi Ntseki is on the verge of being cancelled as there are pressures on Zambia to jettison the arrangement since the attacks also extended to Gauteng which has high concentration of other Africans including Zambians.

Although many reports indicate that Nigerians are mostly targeted but some other reports insist that it is not just Nigerians but also other African countries.

South Africa based News24 reported that protesters and looters have targeted foreigners in different parts of Gauteng over the past few days.

Zambia football Association is reportedly under intense pressure to call off the match billed for Nkoloma Stadium in Lusaka

Bafana Bafana Coach Molefi Ntseki and his squad are currently camping in Johannesburg and were scheduled to depart for Zambia on Thursday even as local media are said to be monitoring reaction from both SAFA and ZAFA ahead of scheduled Thursday’s departure of Bafana Bafana for Lusaka.

Chipolopolo  : Will their friendly against Bafana Bafana hold on Saturday?

Some other reports indicate that a number of African countries are not happy with the reported attacks in the Rainbow Nation and may not be eager to play should the match against Zambia fail prompting the need for a replacement team to face Bafana Bafana who made it to the quarterfinals of the last Nations cup before bowing out after losing 2-1 to Super Eagles of Nigeria at the Cairo Stadium.

Samuel Chukwueze had shot Eagles into the lead in the 27th minute of the encounter but Zungu equalised for Bafana Bafana in the 71st minute but it was Troost Ekong’s 89th minute goal that finally put the match out of the reach of the South Africans who interestingly sent hosts packing in the round of 16 thanks to a lone goal by Thembinkosi Lorch in the 86th minute.

  • Duke to pay N537m debt in 12 hours

A former Cross River State Governor Donald Duke on Monday told a Federal High Court in Lagos that he will pay his N537,334,360.77 debt to Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) in less than 12 hours.

Duke, through his counsel, Mr Edoigiawerie Omoruyi, told Justice Nicholas Oweibo that he had approached AMCON with a promise to liquidate the debt before the end of yesterday (September 2).

He prayed for an adjournment to enable him settle the case out of court. AMCON, on August 8, through its lawyer Juliet Reeds, obtained the court’s order to take interim possession of Duke’s Ikoyi home.

The court also authorised corporation and United Bank for Africa (UBA) to, in the interim, take possession of funds in the accounts of the ex-governor and others in any bank.

The judge gave the order pursuant to AMCON’s and UBA’s August 8 ex parte application.

The applicants listed Stonehedge Investment Limited, Duke and his wife, Owanari Bob-Manuel Duke, as first to third defendants in the suit.

When proceedings resumed yesterday around 2 p.m, Omoruyi said Duke was willing to liquidate the debt before yesterday’s midnight deadline for repayment of the loan.

AMCON’s lawyer Austin Erhabor of Benson Reeds Legal Practitioners, confirmed that Duke approached the corporation with a pledge to pay the debt before midnight.

Erhabor added: “In the spirit of trust and fairness, we will concede to an adjournment to enable us finalise the possible settlement.”

Justice Oweibo upheld Duke’s prayer and adjourned till September 11 for a report of the settlement.

AMCON and UBA, on August 8, prayed the court for “an order of interim attachment, possession and custody of the property being 3, Temple Road, Ikoyi, Lagos”.

They averred that the property was mortgaged by Duke “as collateral in securing the first respondent’s indebtedness to the applicants”.

  • Nigeria has shown me friendship, says IBA President

The President of the International Bar Association (IBA) Horacio Neto has praised Nigeria for the warmth it showed him during his visit to the country.

Neto, who was in Lagos for the 59th Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Annual General Conference (AGC) at the Eko Hotel and Suites, said he renewed old relationships and made new friends during the visit.

He spoke at a dinner reception in his honour by a firm of international commercial lawyers and arbitrators, TRLPLAW.

TRLPLAW’s founders Prince Ajibola Oluyede and his wife Princess Funmi hosted the dinner.

Neto, from Sao Paolo in Brazil, said it was his first time in the country and it was an opportunity to connect with Mrs Oluyede, with whom he had worked at the IBA.

He said: “I find it interesting indeed that I met your wife long before I met you. We have been friends for many years, we have worked together on different projects, which are very relevant for the association. So, Funmi, thank you very much for everything you have done for Africa in the IBA and for the IBA in Africa

“Actually the IBA is the tie of friendship, on top of working together, the IBA is about friendship, about commitment, being happy to go somewhere and seeing your friends, it’s about the pleasure of being with your colleagues, it’s about planning, about diversity, it’s about going everywhere and knowing that you have friends in every place; this is the feeling that I have about Nigeria. I have many friends here.”

Explaining the inspiration for the dinner, Mr Jibola thanked his wife.

He noted the IBA President’s courage for deciding on the Nigeria trip despite untrue negative information about the country.

Ajibola said: “The idea of having a dinner came from my wife, she is the brain in our partnership.

“When they told me the IBA President was coming to Nigeria, I thought it was a momentous event, you know, to have someone like him coming to visit us, notwithstanding the various advisories you get about Nigeria, so we should really thank him because it (his visit) throws a different light about our country.

“You’re very welcome to Nigeria, we’re so happy to have you in Nigeria and we’re sure that this will leave you with a great impression of the country and it’s people… I assure you Nigerians are a fantastic people, not just lawyers.”

He praised the President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Mr Paul Usoro SAN and his wife for honouring the dinner

“We’re really privileged to have you here, privileged to have our President and his beautiful wife Mfon, who we admire so much,” he said.

Returning the compliments, the NBA president commended Ajibola for his forthrightness and ability to speak truth to power

Usoro said: “If you have a difficult case and you need that lawyer who needs to stand very firm and tell the judge what you’re doing is wrong, then you need a Jibola.

“I have been with him in the trenches a number of times. One of the most recent ones was the Bukola Saraki case. Then we needed somebody who could tell the judge, tell the man that see there is a distinction between My Lord and the Chairman of the CCT (Code of Conduct Tribunal) and Jibola was there, and not because he was grandstanding, but because he truly believed in the cause.

“He has a way of not only advocating, he lives his advocacy, he believes in advocacy with a passion and that’s Jibola.”

He praised the couple’s marriage as admirable and exemplary, adding, “somehow they are yet to tell me how they met, but it is very strange that two people with identical character and traits got married and their house is not in flames.

“But I congratulate them, I thank them so much for the honour that they have done to our guest Horacio.”

He further described the IBA President as “somebody who values relationships and who believes that relationships are important. That says something about him. And I believe its on the basis of that relationship that he’s with us today.”

One of the highlights of the night was when Ajibola presented a talking drum to Neto.

Members of the Owo Branch of the NBA also presented a gift to Prince and Princess Oluyede for their support to that branch.

Guests at the dinner, including senior members of the Bar, such as O. C. J. Okocha SAN, Gbenga Oyebode, George and Efe Etomi, Wale Babalakin SAN, J. B. Gadzama SAN, Emeka Ngige SAN, Dorothy Ufot SAN, NBA Vice President  Dr Foluke Dada, Mrs. Sena Anthony, Tunde Ajibade SAN, HRM Oba Odidiomo of Igbokoda, Group Captain Jika of the NAF, Ayo Akintunde SAN, SAN-designate Ebun-Olu Adegborowa, FIDA CVP Rhoda Tyoden, African Women Lawyers’ Association (AWLA) President Mandy Asagba, among others, were entertained by Nigerian dance troupes.

  • Car snatchers’ paradise

Residents of Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have raised the alarm over the menace of car theft and commercial vehicle robbery or one-chance in the nation’s capital. GBENGA OMOKHUNU reports

The seat of federal power is fast losing ground to car thieves and robbers operating in commercial vehicles otherwise known as one-chance. This is a serious worry to residents. Many have fallen victim.

The term ‘One Chance,’ a pidgin English expression used by bus conductors or touts to entice passengers in a hurry to take the last available space in a taxi or bus, has now been adapted to mean being in a fix or a difficult situation.

These robbery gangs often operate in commercial taxis. They have members of the gang in the vehicle, usually painted green. Members pretend to be genuine passengers and drive around looking for victims.

Threatening the security of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and its environs is the rate of ‘one-chance’ activities being perpetrated by unscrupulous people who trap, rape and in some cases drug and kidnap unsuspecting passengers in taxis.

In time past, various forms of vices like robbery, snatching of bags, pick-pockets and “one chance” were only rampant in places like Lagos, Aba, Port Harcourt and  Kano states but the wind of this criminal activity seems to have blown far, even to Abuja.

Some of the residents, who spoke with Abuja Review lamented that their lives were in danger over the activities of bandits who steal cars and rob at gunpoint.

A resident, Ayo Ojo whose Toyota Camry car was stolen while he was shopping in Federal Housing Authority (FHA), Lugbe, described the situation as “disturbing’’.

He said that car theft had become rampant in the FCT, adding that there had been a deluge of complaints at the FHA Police Station where he went to report the case of his stolen car.

“I quickly reported the case at the Lugbe Police Station, but I was shocked to meet some people with the same case of stolen cars at the station while some of them had already written their statements. I parked my car within the FHA Lugbe in front of the shop where I went to buy provisions at about 8:00 p.m. for my family and by the time I came out, I could not find my car,’’ he said.

Another resident, Mr. Ibrahim Ibrahim said his car, also a Toyota Camry (pencil light) was stolen around 10:30 p.m. last July.

Ibrahim said he had to park the car close to a shop and went to pick certain items, but was jolted when he discovered the car was no longer where it was parked.

He said, “My car is a Toyota Camry with silver colour and other valuables like laptop, food items, and my purse were all in the car. Another problem threatening the security of the FCT is the rate of ‘one-chance’ activities being perpetrated by unscrupulous people to trap passengers in taxis either to rob or capture them for rituals or ransom.”

A Nurse, Rose Ojomo in one of the FCT hospitals said she was a victim of a gang of ‘one-chance’ while returning from work last month.

Mrs. Ojomo said that immediately she entered the vehicle, she became suspicious as there were only men in the car, adding that her fear later materialised when she was asked to open her bag and bring out all the money inside.

Her words: “Immediately, they pointed a gun at me inside the car, I quickly told them I don’t have money. I was then asked to bring my ATM card where I led them to a bank to withdraw all the money in my account.”

Also, Miss Hosanna Ikechukwu, a civil servant said it was a sad day for her when she fell victim of ‘one-chance’ while returning from office.

Ikechukwu said that she was dispossessed of her valuables and almost lost her life to ‘one-chance’, criminals who threatened to kill her if nothing valuable was found on her.

She said that for the fact that she had money to part with; her life would have been in danger.

Mr Innocent Uyime of Area A, last road, Nyanya phase 2 told Abuja Review that he was returning from his office at Area one  at 11:00pm after the day’s job.   He boarded a cab at Area 3 junction to go home, but immediately after the old CBN junction,  all the genuine passengers in the taxi were asked to co-operate, and the robbed them.

At Wuse/Berger Park, a member of the Union of Painted Abuja Taxi, PAT, who spoke in confidence said painted taxis belong to a number of unions, aside the national union, NURTW, while he explained the colour type at the top of the taxi clearly states which union a taxi belongs to.

He said: “You can differentiate the taxis with the colour on the top of the taxi to know which company a taxi is registered under. For instance, mine is painted blue which is under PAT and this other one (pointing to another taxi), you can see is painted orange which is under NURTW. Majority of the robberies that are being carried out by cabs are mainly by unpainted vehicles because there is nothing to identify them. For example, private vehicles are into the business of carrying passengers; if such operators commit crimes, they go scott free because no one can really identify or trace them”.

The bandit modus operand is to pose as taxi drivers in a bid to carry a passenger to a lonely road where they can perpetuate their evil act.

They do not pick more than one or two victims at a time. Then they drive them to a remote place, where they are threatened with gun, cutlass, charms or other dangerous weapons and dispossess them of their money, handsets, and other valuables.

Sometimes , after dispossessing the unsuspecting passengers of their valuables, they push them out of the moving vehicle, and if they are kind enough, they stop for their victim to alight before they zoom off. These gangs operate mostly during the early hours in the morning and late in the evening.

They have now added another dimension to their enterprise. They now target the SIM cards of their victims, alongside Automated Teller Machine (ATM), cards. It has been discovered that, with the SIM card, they can access their victim’s bank verification number (BVN) and have total access to other accounts linked to it.

However, it was gathered that with the advent of ATM as well as the Point of Sale (POS) which helps to reduce the volume of cash people carry on them, the gangs have devised new methods of robbing unsuspecting passengers.

They have realised that some people have their ATM cards in their bags or wallets, so, instead of robbing a passenger that falls prey to them and allow him or her to go, they search the passenger, take their ATM cards, take them to a particular destination and hold them hostage and demand for their ATM card pin number.

Woe betide such victim if he or she does not have either money or ATM card at hand.

A security expert told Abuja Review that: “Having disclosed the security code, one of the gang members would rush to the bank to empty the victim’s account, that is if the victim did not carry the POS with them. Don’t be deceived , they blind fold the victim and drop him on the way and zoom off.

Severally, the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Department (CIID) FCT, had announced that it had created an anti-One-Chance Squad to arrest the situation. But the criminal act is not reducing.

Spokesperson , Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, (NSCDC), FCT Command, David Akinbinu, recently told newsmen during one of the corps recent parade of suspects that their men and officers of the intelligence and special crime unit have been able to track down and arrest culprits.

He  further explained that the command is not resting on its oars in ensuring that lives and properties of residents are protected.

Akinbinu who said the crack team of the FCT command of the Corps has rescued several victims , said the arrests were made possible by the proactive crime fighting measures deployed by the Command and the support of public-spirited individuals who have been partnering with them through the provision of information.

He said, “On the One Chance gangs, we have renewed commitment to rid FCT of the activities of one chance robbers, the Command’s newly-created Anti-One Chance Squad, has severally, smashed notorious gangs and recovered their operational vehicles.

The FCT Commissioner of Police, Bala Ciroma few days ago vowed to tackle car snatching and other crimes.

  • Election tribunal voids Osun PDP Rep Salami’s victory

The Election Petition Tribunal, sitting in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, has nullified the victory of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for Ede North, Ede South, Egbedore and Ejigbo Federal Constituency,  Bamidele Salam.

The tribunal, headed by Justice Eyo Ita, ordered a re-run in the seven units of the federal constituency.

The other two members of the tribunal are Justice Kadi Yakub and Justice Ibrahim Mashi.

The candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Adejare Bello, had challenged the victory of Salam in the February 23 National Assembly election.

The tribunal cancelled election results in seven units across four local government areas in the constituency for over-voting.

Reacting to the judgment, Salam said he was not “moved” over the judgment, adding that the mandate that was freely given to him by the people and stamped by God, could not be stolen by any man.

“Our victory at the February 23 House of Representatives poll is sacrosanct and this minor setback will only sweeten the taste of victory in our mouths.

“My legal team will study the details of this judgment and decide the necessary course of action on it,” he said.

Also, the tribunal declared the State Assembly Election for Obokun State Constituency inconclusive.

The panel said the petitioner, Olatunbosun Oyintiloye of the All Progressives Congress (APC), established over-voting in four units. The court, therefore, cancelled elections in those units.

The tribunal declared the results of the poll inconclusive and ordered rerun in the units.

Oyintiloye had challenged the victory of the PDP candidate, Adewumi Adeyemi.

The tribunal on Monday upheld the election of a member of the state House of Assembly, representing Ifelodun State Constituency, Mulikat Abiola, of APC.

The tribunal said the petitioner, Hazzim Abioye of the PDP, failed to prove that the respondent did not resign her appointment in Michael Opara University, Umudike, before contesting for the February poll.

Oyintiloye, in a statement, said the judgment was a confirmation that the election was manipulated to favour the PDP candidate against the popular wish of the people.

According to him, the PDP and its candidate have been exposed and the judiciary has restored their hope through the judgment.

  • Lagos-Ibadan Expressway: No cause for alarm, says FRSC

The Lagos State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) said on Monday no motorist would suffer on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, if they obey lane discipline and diversion signs.

The repairs of the road, which was meant to have started on August 3, had to be postponed till September 2. It is expected to last for 61 days.

The affected road portion to be closed to traffic from Kara Bridge inward Berger and from Berger inward Kara Bridge, amounts to about 1.4 kilometres of the 127.6 kilometres.

Both the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and its Ogun State counterpart had issued a travel advisory, detailing alternative routes that could be used by motorists.

FRSC’s Acting Sector Public Education Officer, for the Lagos Sector, Ms Bisi Sonusi, said the command, in partnership with the FRSC Ogun Sector and other traffic control agencies, had lined up activities to mitigate motorists’ hardship on the corridor.

Ms Sonusi said traffic inward Lagos was still a moving traffic, though heavy. Outside Lagos, she said, was free.

FRSC’s Acting Sector Public Education Officer added some officers would work also at nights, if traffic extended to a late period.

According to her, the corps has also withdrawn officers from other component commands to join in the work.

Apart from tow trucks, FRSC is also in partnership with local divers to assist in search and rescue in case of any accident and in case anyone drowns.

Also, the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos Mr. Adedamola Kuti as assured motorists that with the elaborate traffic management by all agencies of government, motorists should have no trouble on the road.

Kuti, who spoke in Lagos, said the project, which began in 2013 and earlier scheduled to end in 2017, would now be completed by 2021/22, because the Muhammadu Buhari administration expanded its features.

He listed the additional features to include underpasses, footbridges, flyovers, toll plazas and road expansion. These features, he said explained why the project is still 40 per cent completed.

But, Oyo State government has announced that it has deployed 100 traffic managers to the Lagos-Ibadan expressway to direct traffic and make the road less congested for users during its disclosure for reconstruction.

Executive Chairman, Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA) Dr. Akin Fagbemi stated this yesterday in Ibadan while briefing reporters on the efforts of the state administration to ease the burden of travellers using the major highway.

The Lagos-Ibadan road has been described as the only connecting road from the seaport and the international airport in Lagos to the rest of the country and had suffered neglect in the last 10 years.

Fagbemi said his officers would be on ground along the expressway, especially at the points where construction works would be taking place to avoid congestion and traffic snares.

He said commuters could get in touch with the men of the agency on +2348114390097 to report any complaint or seek help on the highway within the period.

He added that alternative routes announced for road users include Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway from Abeokuta connecting Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Sagamu-Ikorodu Road from Sagamu Interchange to Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

Others include Ijebu-Ode-Itoikin Road from Ijebu-Ode to Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

There was heavy security presence at the Berger to Ogun River section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway yesterday as operatives of Julius Berger blocked the outward Lagos stretch of the road for rehabilitation works while making a diversion on the inward Lagos stretch, thereby causing heavy traffic build-up along the single lane.

Area Commander Ogudu Police Command of Lagos State, ACP Miller Dantawaye, said the police have mobilised en-mass to ensure the maintenance of law and order during the rehabilitation works.

Also on Monday, motorists plying the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway pleaded with the Lagos and Ogun state governments and others in charge of the road construction to put adequate measures in place to ensure that any broken down vehicle along the axis are towed off the roads immediately.

This, they said, would ensure free flow of vehicular movement along the axis as broken down vehicle would make traffic worsened.

The plea was made when The Nation visited the area. It was observed that the construction work had begun, the partitioning of the express road outward Lagos had been done to accommodate both those going out of Lagos and those coming into Lagos. When our reporter visited the area, vehicular movement in the area was thick.

About four trucks used for the construction could be sighted and about 10 officials were seen constructing the road.
