  • Rural/urban migration threat to national security- Don

A Professor of English at the Federal University of Technology (FUTA), Akure, Prof. Aborisade Adebayo, has raised the alarm on the continued migration from rural settlement to urban centres of the country.

Adebayo said the influx of rural people without requisite training or education in any area of human life constitutes a threat to the urban areas in various degrees as result of their undefined background nature.

The don spoke during the weekend at Oke-Mesi Ekiti at an economic development sensitisation programm, organised by ‘The Likes Group (TLG) to mark the investiture of the new Mayor, Prince Isola Akingbade.

He stressed that many of those leaving the rural communities in search of better life in urban cities, but without requisite training in any area of human life, are the ones who ultimately opt to become touts or ready tools for politicians in their quest to survive.

He however blamed governments at all levels for the ugly trend, saying everything possible must be done to tackle it without further delay.

This, he said, governments can do by providing all needed developmental infrastructures, such as higher schools and skills acquisition centres capable of making would-be migrants stand on their own feet rather than become hangers-on wherever they go later in life.

” I am not saying migration is not good. It is good and it is a global phenomenon, especially when it us done for economic reasons and further advancements. However, where such migration stops from being good is when it is done baselessly

” Nothing is wrong with migration. It is normal if it is also done either in pursuit of educational advancement or business growth

” It is wrong for people without any skill or anything to transfer to others to suddenly move to places where they become useless to themselves and their host communities.

Adebayo, commended TLG for its initiatives, urging other socio-cultural organisations and clubs to emulate them towards promoting local communities

Outgoing Mayor of TLG, Mr Ropo Okunmuyide, he said the group was formed to promote the socio-economic aspirations of the community as well as empower the less privileged to become self-reliant.
