Merkel says no need to make national anthem gender-neutral

German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, says she does not see the need to change the lyrics of the country’s national anthem amid reports of a proposal to make the song more gender-inclusive.
“Merkel is very happy with the traditional form of the anthem,’’ Government Spokesman, Steffen Seibert, said on Monday.
Seibert was responding to a move by the government’s Equality Commissioner, Kristin Rose-Moehring, reported in the German press.
The Sunday edition of the Bild tabloid had reported that a letter circulating in the Family Ministry, for which the commissioner works, said that words such as “fatherland” in the anthem should be changed to “homeland.”

Also the phrase “brotherly with heart and hand” should be changed to “pluckily with heart and hand.”
Canada recently voted to make its national anthem “O Canada” gender-neutral. The second line of the anthem has been changed from “in all thy sons command” to “in all of us command.”
Austria also added the word “daughters” to its national anthem where previously there had only been “sons.”
A spokesman for the Family Ministry said that the letter had been a “personal contribution” from the equality commissioner.

  • How to ace salary related questions in an interview

How to ace salary related questions in an interview

Landing that dream job is a job in itself.

The interview process that leads to an eventual selection of suitable candidate(s) can be a very arduous and tasking experience especially for the job seeker.

Let’s say time, chance, competence and serendipity have all collaborated with you that you conveniently aced all interview questions. Then comes the big question: “What salary do you expect?”

At this critical junction, a lot of people begin to flounder and goof for lack of tact and creativity that could ensure their landing the job without shortchanging themselves or downplaying their professional values and worth.

Another question job seekers get asked is “What is your current salary?”. This practice is fast becoming illegal around the world.

Although, these twin questions are not illegal in our clime, you will need a great amount of tact and creativity to conveniently answer.

Checking out these 6 tips that’ll help you handle salary questions:

    1. Do Your Research:

It is important that you thoroughly research the organization you intend to apply to. Find out about the position and compensation range.

Knowledge of the industry average for salary will not be out of place. This way, you are not overshooting your expectations or underprice yourself which undermines your competence.

Research what the job you’re applying for pays in tandem with your skill and work experience to make sure your expectations are on target.

    1. Decide On The Minimum Salary You Are Fine With:

Decide on the minimum salary offer you can accept; one that would cater conveniently for your expenses and creates some allowance for savings.

There is no point accepting an offer that will impoverish you, bearing in mind your family, social and economic commitments.

    1. Avoid Salary Questions In The Early Stage Of The Interview:

Negotiations are sometimes very difficult processes especially when you (as a job seeker) know you really need the job. This is where creativity and tact comes in handy.

Try to avoid this kind of talk until there is a solid offer on the table. However, if you are asked before you have such tangible offer, then be careful not to give a direct answer. It is always better to return the question to the interviewer.

You can say: “I will like to know more about the position and its sundry responsibilities before I consider a salary fit for it. What are your expectations for this job?”

    1. Avoid Giving Your Present Or Former Salary:

It is in your best interest if the interviewer reveals the salary package to you, instead of being cocooned and boxed with the question of “what salary do you expect?”.

However, if the reverse is the case, try as much as you can to be creative.

    1. Ask If There Are Other Compensation Benefits Alongside The Salary Offer:

One of the biggest calamity that can befall a person would be working in a job you don’t like and receiving a take home package (salary) that can hardly take you home…you know what I mean? *winks*

However, if you can’t get the salary you want, consider negotiating on the total compensation package. These benefits can include flexible work hours, vacation, training, health, education, transportation, etc.

    1. Be confident:

Being timid and overly humble about the value you can bring into the organization will be committing an hara-kiri (suicide). Confidence is not arrogance. It is a reflection of your emotion and intellectual competence.

A confident candidate with average experience and skills has more chances of being employed than a timid and docile, but highly competent person with experience.

    Hope this helps.

Iran to produce higher enriched uranium

Iran said on Monday it could produce higher enriched uranium within two days if the United States quit a 2015 nuclear deal between Tehran and six major powers, Tehran’s Arabic language al-Alam TV reported.

“If America pulls out of the deal … Iran could resume its 20 per cent uranium enrichment in less than 48 hours,” Behrouz Kamalvandi, spokesman for the Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran, told al-Alam TV.

Uranium refined to 20 per cent fissile purity is well beyond the 5 per cent normally required to fuel civilian nuclear power plants, though still well short of highly enriched, or 80 to 90 per cent, purity needed for a nuclear bomb.

Kamalvandi said the deal, under which Iran curbed its uranium enrichment to help ensure it was for peaceful purposes only and secured an end to financial sanctions in return – is not re-negotiable, as demanded by the United States.

The deal’s European signatories – Germany, Britain and France, as well as Russia and China – are committed to preserving the agreement.

The Iranian nuclear deal, internationally known as JCPOA, was signed in 2015 between Iran and the P5+1 (Russia, China, the U.S., Britain, France and Germany).

Trump has threatened to scuttle the 2015 Iranian nuclear deal unless amendments are made to it.

  • EFCC re-arraigns Alao-Akala, two others over alleged N11.5bn fraud

EFCC re-arraigns Alao-Akala, two others over alleged N11.5bn fraud

The Economic and Financial Crimes  Commission ( EFCC ) on Monday re-arraigned  a former governor of Oyo State, Adebayo Alao-Akala,  and two others in  an Oyo State High Court sitting in  Ibadan over alleged N11.5 billion fraud.

The other defendants are a former Oyo State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Sen. Hosea Agboola,  and an Ibadan-based businessman, Femi Babalola.

The defendants are facing an 11-count charge of conspiracy, awarding contract without budgetary provision, obtaining by false pretence, acquiring property with money derived from illegal act and concealing the ownership of such property, among others.

EFCC’s counsel, Dr B. Ubi,  told the court that when Alao-Akala was the governor of Oyo State,  he  awarded a  road contract worth N8.5 billion between 2007 and 2009 to Pentagon Engineering Services.

Ubi  alleged  that the firm  owned by Babalola handled the contract on behalf of the 33 local governments without budgetary provision.

The counsel further claimed that Alao-Akala  ordered the supply of drilling machines on behalf of the 33 local governments in the state to the tune of N3.5 billion.

He also alleged that Alao-Akala  conspired with Ayoola to withdraw N2.9 billion from Oyo State Local Government Joint Account.

The prosecutor told the court that Alao-Akala also illegally acquired some property on  Old Bodija road, off Rotimi Williams road,  when he was the governor of the state.

He said that the offences contravened Section 22 (4) of the Corrupt Practices  and  Other Related Offences Act and Section 1 (18) of the Advanced Fee Fraud Act.

The defendants, however,  pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Mr Hakeem Afolabi, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and counsel to Alao-Akala and Babaloa prayed the court to exercise its discretion in granting bail to the defendants.

Afolabi said that the charge  before the court was not a fresh one but a re-arraignment.

He said the matter was first  filed on Oct. 11, 2011,  before Justice Moshood Abas and bail was granted after  the defendants met the conditions.

We recall that the defendants had also appeared before Justice Akintunde Boade  and  Justice Bayo Taiwo who was recently transferred out of Ibadan Division.

Afolabi said  that Alao-Akala was granted bail in the sum of N5 million with two sureties in  like sum while the other defendants were granted bail in the sum of N3 million each with two sureties in like sum.

Afolabi urged the court to allow the defendants to enjoy the earlier bail condition granted to the defendants.

Mr Richard Ogunwole,  another Senior Advocate of Nigeria and counsel to Ayoola, aligned with the submission of Alao-Akala’s counsel.

The EFCC  counsel said he would not oppose the bail applications.

Justice Muniru Owolabi granted the defendants’ prayers and adjourned the case till  April 16 for trial.

  • True federalism panacea to Nigeria’s security challenges – Lawmaker

True federalism panacea to Nigeria’s security challenges – Lawmaker

The Deputy Majority Leader of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mr Olumuyiwa Jimoh, on Monday said that entrenchment of true federalism would address the nation’s security and other challenges.

Jimoh, representing Apapa Constituency II at the Assembly, told the newsmen in Lagos that the current system had not made effective and efficient security possible.

According to him, security of the nation can only improve if the federating states are empowered through devolution of powers.

“As we see new acts of bombing, kidnapping especially in the North East, this shows everything is not well and we must not pretend as if things are all right.

“So, we need to intensify efforts in improving our security by entrenching true federalism. We must address our federalism. In true federalism, states are being empowered.

“The present federalism is affecting our security because there is no adequate security that can be provided for the people by the central government alone.

“The entire Nigeria Police Force is not up to 200, 000 and we have 36 states. The population of Lagos alone is about 22 million, how can people be well policed?” the lawmaker asked.

READ ALSO: Does true federalism guarantee true democracy?

According to him, the Boko Haram problem, which should be a local one for the police to handle, has become a matter for the army and the air force who are supposed to defend the country against foreign invasion.

Jimoh urged the federal government to beef up security on the nation’s waters, to check illegal entry into the country.

The lawmaker, who noted that there had been major robbery incidents through the waterways, said it was unfortunate that the FG and Lagos State were in court on who controls the waterways.

On the role of citizens in security, the lawmaker said they had a duty to provide information to the police and other agencies.

“As citizens too, we have not been able to do our responsibility in the area of providing intelligence information as and when due to the security agents.

“An average individual in the western world, when he sees something strange or new, alerts the police and other security agents so that before it gets out of hand, the security agents are on top of it.

“But this does not happen here,” he said.

Jimoh urged government across levels to focus on education, employment and youth development to tackle the growing rate of insecurity. NAN

  • Famine: Organisation calls for increased humanitarian aid for Somalia

Famine: Organisation calls for increased humanitarian aid for Somalia

An International charity organisation on Monday called on donors to increase humanitarian aid to help avert famine in Somalia where the lives of some 2.7 million people are at risk.

In a statement issued on the eve of London for Somalia humanitarian conference, the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) warned that half a million people today are on the brink of famine.

“The international community saved thousands of lives in Somalia last year, and helped stop a famine before it could happen.

“Less humanitarian aid now threatens to throw the country back into a deeper crisis, even towards catastrophe,” NRC Regional Director Nigel Tricks said in a statement.

The focus of the High-Level Event for the Humanitarian Situation in Somalia is to draw attention to the humanitarian crisis in Somalia and generate political and financial momentum for the 2018 humanitarian response and recovery.

The Tuesday event will bring together senior decision makers and partners to agree on how to plan and fund the 2018 humanitarian response, address priority gaps, review lessons from the successful 2017 famine prevention response and how these can be applied to best effect in 2018.

According to the charity, while the country dodged famine in 2017, 2.7 million people today are living in what the UN describes as crisis or emergency phases of hunger.

“Aid works, as humanitarian aid saved countless lives in Somalia in 2017, but 2018 promises a new year of crisis.

“Somalia’s forecast includes continued drought for several regions this year,” Tricks said.

“Without a focused effort by government and the international community to maintain support for Somalis at risk, thousands of people may be pushed back over the edge,” he warned.

According to the charity, the humanitarian community seeks 1.5 billion U.S. dollars for programs to sustain and rebuild the drought and conflict stricken country in 2018 with focus on drought.

A catastrophe was averted in 2017 as donors, governments and agencies heeded crisis warnings, and acted quickly to help hold off another famine.

This year the situation is urgent as 5.4 million Somalis will need
    humanitarian aid.

According to the charity, no fewer than 300,000 children under age five are acutely malnourished, including 48,000 severely malnourished children who face an increased risk of death.

Some 1.1 million people fled their homes due to drought and conflict in 2017 in Somalia, adding to the one million people who were already displaced within the country from previous years.

  • Developer advises FG on ways to attract FDI

Developer advises FG on ways to attract FDI

A real estate developer, Mr Solomon Ogunseye, on Monday called on the Federal Government to liberalize key sectors of the economy to attract more Foreign Direct Investments (FDI) into the country.

Ogunseye, who is also Chairman of the Lagos State Chapter of the Building Collapse Prevention Guild (BCPG), made the suggestion in an interview with our Reporter in Lagos.

He said that FDI was necessary to boost economic growth, noting that government alone would not develop every sector of the economy without support from local and foreign investors.

The developer said that government should do away with policy inconsistency to engender investors’ confidence.

According to him, policy inconsistency should be done away with because it is a major hindrance to FDI into Nigeria.

He called for right policies, legislations and regulatory framework that could guarantee a stable macro-economic environment.

“Government needs to put in place the right policies and legislations to guarantee investors’ confidence that if they come into this environment, there will not be policy summersaults.

“There will not be challenges with their profits/dividends, there will be respect for contractual agreements and that the macro-economic environment will be stable, the economy will attract foreign investments.”

He pointed out said that many countries, including Dubai developed through FDI because FDI complement domestic investments.

“FDI is what the real estate industry and the country generally need to grow.

“All the government needs do is to make the country business conducive for foreign investors to bring in more money for investment.

“In Dubai, an enabling environment is created to encourage all to bring in money for investment.”

Ogunseye noted that the country could adopt the same approach, having achieved reasonable peace and security for businesses to thrive.

He advised the government not to relent in its fight against corruption and to ensure stable electricity, transportation network and relax the visa regime, among others.

The BCPG chairman also suggested that the government should simplify the screening processes of FDI such that any foreign investor could easily bring in his investment to boost national income.

South Korea closes 84-year-old poet’s exhibition

South Korea’s capital has closed an exhibition by poet Ko Un, long the country’s hope for a Nobel Prize in literature, amid allegations of sexual misconduct and the government is considering removing his work from textbooks.

Ko Un, 84, denied any “habitual misconduct” in a statement made through his British publisher.

He first faced allegations when fellow South Korean poet Choi Young-mi released a poem in December titled “Monster”, which describes harassment by an older male poet named “En”.

South Koreans have widely interpreted it to refer to Ko, seizing on passages that match his biography, including references to the buzz surrounding the unnamed poet’s Nobel Prize chances.

While not confirming the identity, Choi has not denied the public identification of Ko and in February she told a TV interviewer that she had been harassed by a famous poet who “repeatedly harassed female writers”.

Neither Choi nor Ko’s publisher, Bloodaxe Books, responded to requests for comment.

After Ko’s denial was reported in The Guardian on Sunday, Choi took to Facebook to post simply: “What I wrote in my poem `Monster’ is true.”

The anti-sexual harassment #MeToo movement has taken off belatedly in male-dominated South Korea where discussion of sexual misconduct has long been taboo, but it has ensnared a growing number of leading entertainment figures in recent months.

The growing number of high-profile accusations has led President Moon Jae-in to urge law enforcement authorities to investigate reports of sexual abuse.

Choi’s oblique allegations have been corroborated by other writers, including poet Lee Hye-mi, who said on Facebook that she witnessed “ridiculous behaviour” while co-hosting a TV show with Ko.

The controversy has led the Seoul city government to permanently shut an exhibition devoted to Ko’s work.

Ko’s poems cover a range of subjects, from love and politics to daily life.

Ko, a former Buddhist monk, visited North Korea in 2000 as a special delegate for a South-North summit.

An official at the textbook division of South Korea’s Education Ministry told Reuters it was discussing plans to remove Ko’s poems from school books.

“We are taking the issue very seriously.

“We will issue a statement shortly after poet Choi’s claim became public, asking publishers how they would like to proceed with the issue and edit their textbooks with Ko’s works,” the official said.
