UNICEF issues blank statement on Syria

UNICEF issued a blank “statement” on Tuesday to express its outrage at mass casualties among Syrian children in the besieged enclave of Eastern Ghouta and neighboring Damascus.

“No words will do justice to the children killed, their mothers, their fathers and their loved ones,” the release from UNICEF’s regional director Geert Cappalaere began.

There followed 10 empty lines with quote marks indicating missing text, and an explanatory footnote.

“UNICEF is issuing this blank statement. We no longer have the words to describe children’s suffering and our outrage,” it said.

“Do those inflicting the suffering still have words to justify their barbaric acts?”

Forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad have been besieging almost 400,000 civilians trapped inside Eastern Ghouta for years, but the siege has tightened this year and attacks on the enclave have intensified.

Siege tactics and indiscriminate attacks on civilian areas contravene the internationally-agreed “rules of war”.

Pro-government forces carried out air raids on Eastern Ghouta overnight on Monday and early on Tuesday, the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

The observatory said no fewer than 100 people were killed in air raids, rocket strikes and shelling of the area on Monday.

  • Petroleum Summit: NANS commends Kachikwu

    Petroleum Summit: NANS commends Kachikwu

The National Association of Nigerian Students ( NANS ) has commended Dr Ibe Kachikwu, the Minister of State for Petroleum, over Nigeria’s hosting of the International Petroleum Summit ( NIPS ).

NANS President Chinonso Obasi said in a statement issued in Abuja that the hosting a summit of such magnitude for the first time was a good omen for the Nigerian economy.

The theme of the maiden summit is “Deepening collaboration in the African Oil and Gas Industry: Challenges and Opportunities for Investment”.

Obasi said he considered it a unique opportunity to woo investors to Nigeria and Africa’s oil and gas sector.

“In the past, most Nigerian energy and petroleum industry players spent huge foreign exchange to attend the popular Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) in Houston, U.S.

“Today, Kachikwu has changed the narrative by conceptualising and hosting the new Nigeria OTC, that seeks to bring investors and players in the sector to Africa for the first time.

“I will also like to acknowledge the Minister of State for the opportunity given to NANS to be part of the unique event.”

He said he believed the opportunity provided by the summit would foster greatness for the Nigerian petroleum sector.

Kachikwu, had earlier at a break-out session of the summit on Monday, said that multinational oil firms would soon stop shipping out the crude oil they produced in Nigeria.

According to him, the government is planning to put in place frameworks for multinational oil and gas firms to build refineries in Nigeria, thereby processing a substantial amount of crude produced from its oil fields.

“We will get to a point where Nigeria, definitely, would be a major supplier of refined petroleum products.

“It just has to happen. Nothing else makes sense. We are also saying directly to oil companies that a time would also come when we would not be open to see them move around all the crude oil they produce in Nigeria.

“We will like to see integrated refining and integrated processing here. It gives us more jobs and creates more investments,” Kachikwu said.

  • Ramaphosa says it’s time to review cabinet make up

Ramaphosa says it’s time to review cabinet make up

President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa said on Tuesday it was time to consider the make-up of his cabinet, amid growing speculation about whether Finance Minister Gigaba would keep his job.

Ramaphosa was sworn in as head of state on Thursday after his scandal-plagued predecessor, Jacob Zuma, reluctantly resigned on orders of the ruling African National Congress ( ANC ) after nine years in office blighted by corruption, economic mismanagement and disputed appointments.

In his first state of nation address on Friday, Ramaphosa strongly hinted at a cabinet shake-up when he said he would review the make-up and size of government departments.

Investors are watching closely to see if Gigaba, who is due to deliver the budget speech on Wednesday, keeps his job.

“This is the time to walk, to reflect even about cabinet and all that,” he told reporters on television news channel eNCA during his walk, in response to a question on whether there was still time to shake up his cabinet ahead of the budget speech.

“I’ll be walking maybe three times a week, walking with our people,” he said. “I want my tummy to fall, so I‘m going to continue walking.”

At a separate event in Cape Town, Gigaba declined to comment when asked by reporters about the speculation over his job.

However, his deputy Sfiso Buthelezi, who sat next to his boss, said Gigaba would deliver the budget on Wednesday.

“The question that is being asked of the minister, if he is going to present the budget. That is why we are here.

“There is a budget that is going to be presented tomorrow and it is going to be presented by nobody else but Malusi Gigaba,” Buthelezi said.

On Friday, Ramaphosa delivered a message of optimism and renewal Friday in his first state of the nation address, saying it’s time for South Africans to put discord behind them and that the country will “turn the tide” on corruption in state institutions this year.

Ramaphosa’s address capped a dramatic week in which he was elected by ruling party lawmakers following the resignation of predecessor Jacob Zuma, whose tenure was marked by corruption scandals.

Zuma was supposed to give the speech on Thursday, but it was postponed because of the leadership crisis that fueled uncertainty and anxiety in the country of 57 million people.

“We should put behind us the era of diminishing trust in public institutions and weakened confidence in our country’s public leaders,” said Ramaphosa, who was Zuma’s deputy before becoming South Africa’s fifth president since the end of white minority rule in 1994.

“A new dawn is upon us,” he said in a speech in parliament that drew applause but was criticized by the opposition as short on meaningful solutions.

Ramaphosa, 65, faces the hard task of rooting out corruption that flourished in both state enterprises and the private sector under Zuma, implicating figures in the ruling African National Congress party that he now leads.
In addition, he must tackle sluggish economic growth, high unemployment and economic inequality that are among South Africa’s most deep-rooted problems.

The new president said his administration would concentrate on creating jobs and attracting investment, while also possibly downsizing bloated government departments and restructuring state-owned enterprises that are inefficient and prone to corruption.

“This is the year in which we will turn the tide on corruption in our public institutions.

“The criminal justice institutions have been taking initiatives that will enable us to deal effectively with corruption,” Ramaphosa said.

South African authorities want to arrest a key member of the Gupta business family accused of using its links to Zuma to influence Cabinet ministers and secure state contracts.

The suspect, Ajay Gupta, is considered a fugitive after failing to turn himself in, according to police.

Eight people, including a member of the Gupta family, have already been arrested as part of an investigation into alleged corruption involving the Guptas, who deny any wrongdoing.

The family is a flashpoint for national anger over “state capture,” the term used by South Africans to describe an allegedly wide-ranging effort to loot state enterprises under Zuma.

Ramaphosa said he supports the work of a judicial commission that is about to investigate the phenomenon, but one opposition leader said the new president would have to turn on his own political party if he is serious about fighting graft.

  • Guardiola looks to another Cup after Wigan upset

Guardiola looks to another Cup after Wigan upset

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has refused to blame his players after the runaway English Premier League leaders were knocked out of the English FA Cup by third-tier Wigan Athletic.

Monday’s 1-0 fifth round defeat at the DW Stadium was like a repeat of the 2012-13 final match won by Wigan when the Latics were in the top tier.

However, it ended Manchester City’s hopes of an unprecedented league and Cup quadruple this season.

“Congratulations to Wigan for the qualification,” Guardiola, whose team was reduced to 10 men at half-time, said.

“We did absolutely everything. We made a mistake and this kind of game is like a final. OK, we accept the defeat,” added the Spaniard.

“Wigan won congratulations to them and now we rest to prepare for the League Cup final.”

Manchester City is to face Arsenal in the final of that competition at Wembley next Sunday.

They were overwhelming favourites against opponents fighting for promotion from League One.

But Manchester City was always wary of Wigan’s proud reputation as a ‘bogey team’ in the world’s oldest and most romantic domestic cup competition.

Apart from beating them in the 2013 final, Wigan had also dumped them out at the quarter-final stage of the competition at the Etihad Stadium a season later.

That was just as Manchester City was heading for the league title under Manuel Pellegrini.

They started with their Argentine top scorer Sergio Aguero, and had Belgian midfielder Kevin De Bruyne waiting on the bench.

But neither was able to make the most of their side’s dominant possession.

In the end, the match turned on the sending-off of Fabian Delph on the stroke of half-time with the Manchester City midfielder shown a controversial red card for a sliding tackle.

His team mates crowded around the referee in protest, but it was all in vain.

Wigan’s prolific goalscorer Will Grigg then fired in a 79th minute winner.

However, in spite of his obvious anger at the time, Guardiola steered clear of criticism of the official after the final whistle.

“Red card. It was the decision,” he said.

“They had one shot on target, I don’t have regrets with the way we played, the performance, the heart,” continued the manager.

“I judge my players on intentions and not results and the intentions were good.’’

Football is more than a religion in Nigeria – FIFA president

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has described Nigeria as a country with unquantifiable passion and love for football, and where football is more than a religion.

“I was told that in Nigeria football is passion, but it is a lie because it is more than that. In Nigeria I was told that football is love, but it is a lie it is more than that.

“In Nigeria, I was told that football is a religion, but it is a lie. It is more than that. In Nigeria, football is life,” he said in Lagos on Monday.

Infantino spoke at the maiden edition of the AITEO-NFF Awards, which was organised by the Nigeria Football Federation ( NFF ) and bankrolled by oil giants AITEO Group.

The event held at the Eko Hotels and Suites saw Chelsea FC winger Victor Moses winning the “Player of the Year” award.

Speaking also at the event, the Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, pledged his administration’s continued support to football and sports in general.

“We will continue to give our unrelenting support to football and sports in general, I want to assure the President of FIFA that whenever he is coming back, Lagos will be considered to host a FIFA tournament,’’ he said.

In his address, the Deputy Managing Director of AITEO Group, Francis Peters, said the oil conglomerate was happy to be part of football history in Nigeria in good times.

NFF president Amaju Pinnick, on his part, said the awards night was to celebrate Nigerian legends for their contributions to the development of football in the country.

He also said football administration was a journey and not a destination, adding “therefore, there must be a conscious effort to minimise errors for fear of losing the opportunity.

“In Nigeria, football is a way of life and everybody is a coach. So, we need to be very careful. Football teaches us ethics and how to live a normal life,” Pinnick said.

NAN reports that Moses got the award and recognition for his stellar performances for the national team, the Super Eagles, en route their qualification for Russia 2018.

He was an integral part of the side during the historic qualification matches where he played in four of the six matches scoring three goals in the process.

Moses also helped his Chelsea side reclaim the English Premier League title in the 2016/2017 season where he featured in 40 games.

The 27-year old also got CAF’s recognition by being among the nominees for CAF’s Player of the Year award eventually won by Egypt’s Mohamed Salah.

To win the AITEO-NFF award, he beat competition from Leicester City’s Wilfred Ndidi and Lobi Stars’ Anthony Okpotu.

  • KOWA party advocates legislation for political party registration

KOWA party advocates legislation for political party registration

The KOWA Party has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), to approach the National Assembly for legislation for political party registration.

Mr Mark Adebayo, the National Secretary of KOWA, told the Newsmen in Lagos on Tuesday that it was unrealistic for INEC to continue to register more parties on daily basis.

According to him, I do not think we should have more than 10 political parties in this country.

“We in KOWA strongly think that INEC cannot continue registering political parties; asides the fact that it is too expensive for the commission to go round the 36 states and FCT to monitor party congresses, it is unrealistic to have 52 political parties.

“Also, about 100 have so far applied for registration, we cannot continue like this. There has to be a way to limit the number of political parties in the country.

“There is urgent need for INEC to approach the National Assembly, there has to be legislation on the present number of political parties that we have,’’ Adebayo said.

The scribe said that proliferation of political parties was the reason manifestoes of almost all the parties were alike saying it has become just a `written verbatim’.

He urged INEC to set minimum standards for registration of political parties disagreeing with a situation whereby political parties met requirements of law, gets registered and go home to sleep.

“Political realities are different from freedom of association; your freedom of association should not lead you to having parties that you will not be able to monitor or sustain.

“You are free to associate, but every family or street does not need to form a political party. It will destroy our democracy,’’ he said.

The KOWA scribe however, suggested the need for INEC to introduce a pamphlet that would carry names of all registered political parties instead of going to print a long ballot paper that could lead to voter apathy.

According to him, there has to be a way for people to spend the barest minimum time at the polling booth.

The news men reports that there are 68 registered political parties in Nigeria at present.

More associations have applied to INEC to be registered as political parties.

  • Trump ranks worst U.S. President in poll

Trump ranks worst U.S. President in poll

President Donald Trump has been ranked as the worst U.S. President in history in a Presidents’ Day poll of political scientists that ranked all 44 of the people who have served as U.S. president.

Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Teddy Roosevelt respectively took the top four spots in the Boise State University “Presidential Greatness Survey.”

While Trump is the 45th President, one of his predecessors, Grover Cleveland, was elected two separate times, making him the 22nd and 24th President, who ranked as 24th on the survey.

The experts were asked to rank each president on a scale from zero – worst – to 100 – best – based on their overall performance in office.

Their rankings showed that Trump came in last place with an average score of 12.34.

Coming in first place, according to the survey, is Abraham Lincoln, who scored an average of 95.03 between both Democrats and Republicans surveyed while George Washington got a rating of 92.59.

Just over 57 per cent of those polled identified as Democrats while 13 per cent were Republican and 27 per cent were Independents.

The top seven presidents that have remained the same since the poll was last conducted in 2014: Lincoln, Washington, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Theodore Roosevelt, Thomas Jefferson, Harry Truman, and Dwight D. Eisenhower.

In the latest round of survey, former president Barack Obama moved up in the rankings to 8th best president, compared to 18th he ranked in the 2014 survey.

Even Republican respondents rated Trump as the fourth worst president – 40th of 44th while they placed Obama as the 16th.

Ronald Reagan, who also moved up from his previous ranking, trailed behind Obama in 9th place.

Bearing in mind that this was Trump’s first year in office, the survey takers asked respondents to grade him on an A-F scale.

He was graded on the subjects: his presidency overall, legislative accomplishments, foreign policy leadership, embodying institutional norms, and communicating with the public.

Overall, scholars gave him failing grades – three Fs and two Ds – while he scored highest on communicating with the public and lowest on embodying institutional norms.

However, self-identifying Republicans graded the 45th president higher – three Ds and two Cs.

The higher marks awarded Trump were in communicating with the  public and foreign policy leadership.

Trump was rated worse than President Richard Nixon, who quit under pressure from the Watergate scandal, ranking as 33rd.

Trump was also rated below William Henry Harrison who died after only a month in office – from March 4, 1841 to April 4, 1841.

Even Warren Harding, whose presidency was afflicted by the Teapot Dome corruption scandal and his dalliances with mistresses, rated higher than Trump at 39th.

Trump also “won” the most polarising President, ahead of Andrew Jackson who won the second position.

“Donald Trump is by far the most polarising of the ranked presidents,” poll authors Brandon Rottinghaus and Justin Vaughn wrote.
