  • Zuma asked to resign as South African President

Zuma asked to resign as South African President

The ANC has decided to sack Jacob Zuma as President of South Africa, a senior official said on Tuesday, after a marathon meeting to determine the fate of a leader whose scandal-plagued years in power darkened and divided Nelson Mandela’s ‘Rainbow Nation’.

The decision by the ruling party’s national executive came in the early hours of the morning, after 13 hours of tense deliberations and one face-to-face meeting between Zuma and his presumed successor, deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa.

Zuma has been living on borrowed time since Ramaphosa, a union leader once tipped as Mandela’s pick to take over the reins, was elected as head of the 106-year-old ANC in December, narrowly defeating Zuma’s ex-wife, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma.

In spite of the damning decision to order Zuma’s “recall” – ANC-speak for ‘remove from office’ – domestic media have speculated that the 75-year-old might yet defy the party’s wishes, forcing it into the indignity of having to unseat him in parliament.

Shortly before midnight, the SABC state broadcaster said Zuma had been told in person by Ramaphosa that he had 48 hours to resign.

A senior party source later told Reuters Zuma had made clear that he was going nowhere.

“Ramaphosa went to speak with him,” the source said, adding that when Ramaphosa returned to the ANC meeting in a Pretoria hotel, the discussions were tense and difficult”.

“We decided to recall Zuma. He hasn’t been told yet,” the source said.

The ANC said it would hold a media briefing at 1000 GMT to reveal the results of the meeting.

Zuma’s spokesman did not answer his mobile phone.

On Friday his wife Tobeka Madiba-Zuma posted comments on Instagram suggesting Zuma, who has challenged and defied attempts by the ANC and courts to rein him in, was prepared to fight and believed he was the victim of a Western conspiracy.

“He will finish what he started because he does not take orders beyond the Atlantic Ocean,” she said.

South Africa’s economy, the most sophisticated on the continent, has stagnated under Zuma’s nine-year tenure, with banks and mining firms reluctant to invest because of policy uncertainty and rampant corruption.

UNICEF wants CMAM to cover all LGAs in Gombe

The United Nations Children Fund ( UNICEF ), Bauchi Field Office, on Monday urged the Gombe State Government to expand the Community Management of Acute Malnutrition ( CMAM ) to cover all local government areas.

Mr Drissa Yeo, Officer-In-Charge, UNICEF Nigeria Bauchi Field Office, made the appeal in Gombe at a two-day states’ engagement plan development meeting for Gombe, Jigawa, Taraba, Plateau and Bauchi states.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that UNICEF defines Community Management of Acute Malnutrition (CMAM) as a proven approach to manage Severe Acute Malnutrition and Moderate Acute Malnutrition in children under five.

The approach is presently implemented in more than 70 countries of the World.
Presently, CMAM is being implemented in only three out of the 11 local government areas in the state; namely Gombe, Dukku and Nafada.

“I am appealing to the Gombe Government to direct expansion of implementation of the CMAM programme from three to 11 local government areas or to at least three additional LGAs,’’ Yeo said.

The official also called on the state government to release its counterpart fund of N248 million to support nutrition in the state.

He said the state government should look at the possibility of releasing N10 million for the 2017/2018 annual school census and maintenance of education management information servers.

The money, according to Yeo, is also for maintenance of facilities in the state Ministry of Education and the State Universal Basic Education Board ( SUBEB ).

He said that this was the first joint planning meeting in the state since the Federal Government and UNICEF started a new five-year programme, which is to be implemented from 2018 to 2022.

Earlier, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Mr James Pisagih, said the purpose of the meeting was to enable UNICEF and other stakeholders take strategic decisions.

Pisagih, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, General Duties, Alhaji Usman Shamaki, said their decisions would guide effective implementation of the new country engagement plan.

“I therefore commend the UNICEF for its commitments in this regard,” he said.

Pisagih however called on UNICEF, which had withdrawn its support for HIV intervention in the state, to reconsider its stance.

He said that its support would facilitate total eradication of the scourge in the state.

BBNaija ‘Double Wahala’: Khloe wins Head of House task for week three

Big Brother “Naija” housemate Khloe has won the weekly immunity task popularly known as the Head of House task.

Khloe came up against Ifu Ennada and Bambam, with the latter losing out in the first round with zero points. This meant Khloe and Ifu Ennada went head to head after they both scored three points and six points respectively in a game of ball throwing.

Khloe officially became the latest boss of the house after she managed to grab more points than Ifu Ennada during the latter rounds of the contest.

She declared her naivety for the role and sought for help from her fellow housemates.

She said “Guys please help me; I am a woman of many flaws”.

Traditionally, the HoH first assignment is to read the wager brief and lead the deliberation of the wager percentage.

“Kween” Khloe initially prompted for a 25 per cent wager, however other housemates who were fed up with ‘poverty’ in the house having lost all their previous wagers opted for a 50 per cent wager.

The latest HoH task has more consequence on the housemates compared to the previous two won by Tobi Bakare because “Kween” Khloe’s replacements during the nomination show will be put up for a potential eviction from the show.

“Biggie” announced two pairs will be leaving the house on Sunday, Feb. 18, during the live eviction show.

The nominees would be the first housemates to be evicted from the show after the two previous evictions were fake evictions.

The unique idea and theme of this year’s show “double wahala” means that K-Square made up of K-brule and Khloe will have immunity from the nomination process which began on Monday.

  • TV advertisement market to generate $400m revenue – FG

TV advertisement market to generate $400m revenue – FG

The Federal Government said on Monday that it would catalyse the Nigerian TV advertisement market to generate additional 200 million dollars to 400 million dollars revenue to the industry.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed said this at the launch of the Digital Switch Over (DSO) in Enugu.

The switch over from analogue to digital terrestrial broadcasting was performed by Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State and the minister.

Mohammed said that the feat could be easily achieved by bringing the nation’s TV advertisement market in line with global best practice.

He disclosed that his ministry would establish Task Team of industry experts, with best practices related to Audience Measurement Systems.

According to the minister, Audience Measurement Systems is key to DSO sustainability, growth in TV and value creation in the creative industry.

He said the Task Force to be established would, therefore, identify best practice Audience Measurement System to support the sustainable growth of the industry.

According to him, this will also recommend framework for supporting the sustainability of the Audience Measurement System, independent of the Federal Government.

The Task Force, according to the minister, will recommend a payment and disbursement framework among the key
    stakeholders in the industry.

“The existing model of TV in the country, stunts quality of the content that can be created and limits the capacity of Television platforms to invest in.

“As it is now, the value of Nigeria’s Broadcasting Advertising Market is not proportionate with its population when compared to the Top 3 Markets in Sub-Saharan Africa region.

“Despite having a population more than three times that of South Africa, Nigeria’s Television Advertising Revenue in 2016, at 309 million dollars, was 76 per cent behind that of South Africa.

“Similarly, in the Radio sector, the value of Nigeria’s 2016 Advertising Revenue of 81 million dollars was 75 per cent behind its peers, South Africa and Kenya, both at 343 million dollars.

“In both territories, the value and growth rate of the Broadcasting Advertising Revenue is largely influenced by the availability of a scientific Audience Measurement System,’’ he said.

The minister solicited the cooperation of all well-meaning practitioners of the industry to join hands with the government to achieve it.

He also underscored the commitment of the government to rapidly spread the massive benefits of digital television to the people.

“We are now at the cruise level of the journey we started in Jos, Plateau State in April 2016, as the DSO train has now transverse Abuja, Ilorin, Kaduna, to arrive here in Enugu, its latest stop.

“From here, the DSO train will proceed to Osun State, as we continue our rapid rollout of digital television across the country,’’ he said.

NAN reports that the minister also donated 100 Set-Top Boxes to the state government for free distribution to the people.

Gov. Ugwuanyi said that the journey to DSO was not an easy ride and thanked the Federal Government and in particular the minister for his doggedness and commitment to the project.

He said the state would distribute 10,000 free Set-Top Boxes to low-income earners in its 475 autonomous communities.

The Director-General, National Broadcasting Commission, Modibbo Kawu said that DSO would enhance broadcasting chain, deliver crystal clear TV signals and offer wide job opportunities in the sector.
