Acquire vocational, get start-up capital – Ambode

Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos on Monday advised corps members to acquire vocational skills to qualify for a start-up capital from the Lagos State Empowerment Trust Fund ( LSETF ).

Ambode gave the advice at the closing of the orientation course for the 2017 Batch B corps members deployed in the state.

The governor was represented by the state Commissioner for Special Duties, Mr Oluseye Oladejo.

According to the governor, the objective of the LSETF is to support young people to become job and wealth creators.

“I am aware that the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development ( SAED ) programme  was one of the activities in which you were engaged during the orientation.

“I urge you to take your post-camp training serious and acquire vocational skills of your choice.

“This will qualify you for a start-up capital from the Lagos State Empowerment Trust Fund that was established to provide financial support for Lagos residents and NYSC members serving in the state,’’ he said.

The governor noted that the objective of the National Youth Service Scheme ( NYSC ) was to foster unity among the various ethnic groups in the country.

“I have no doubt that the orientation course has adequately prepared you for the next phase of your service.

“You are expected to exhibit good qualities such as tolerance, patriotism, diligence and perseverance in your various places of primary assignment.

“As you prepare to step out of this camp, I implore you to participate actively in anything that will positively affect the lives of others,’’ he said.

Ambode called on the corps members to contribute meaningfully to the socio-economic development of their host communities.

The state Coordinator of the NYSC, Mr Mohammed Momoh, said that 2,549 corps members participated in the orientation course in the state.

Momoh said that the corps members were taken through well-structured programmes such as citizenship and leadership training, para-military drills and lectures on self-actualisation.

He urged the corps members to accept in good faith, their postings to their places of primary assignment.

The coordinator also advised them not to go on unauthorised journeys outside Lagos.

“If you must travel, permission must be obtained through the proper channel.

“I encourage you to be agents of change and good ambassadors in your places of primary assignment.

“I enjoin you to key into the federal and state governments’ grassroots-oriented programmes aimed at enhancing the socio-economic development of your host communities,’’ he said.

TStv to roll out decoders next week – official

The Management of the much awaited indigenous Satellite TV, inaugurated on October 1, on Friday said the TStv decoders would be in the market from next week.

Mr Ernest Essien, the TStv’s Public Relations Officer, made the disclosure in Abuja.

Essien said the company had concluded arrangement to roll out its commercial decoders from next week after the successful test run of its promo decoders distributed before November 1.

He said that the service provider was committed to making sure that all the intending customers should have their decoders before Christmas.

“We are almost done with our test transmission and we are just putting some finishing touches and hopefully by the grace of God, between now and next week the decoders will be out for sale.

“We are informing Nigerians that they must enjoy their Christmas with their decoders. So before Christmas, the decoders will be everywhere in the market.

“Everything is in place we have done everything we needed to do before coming out and I want to let you know that TStv is still on course.’’

Essien reiterated that the price of TStv decoder would remain at the initial N5,000 with all the packages promised, adding that there would  be additional surprise packages for its customers.

He said that the management had decided to keep the packages secret until the decoders were rolled out.

“We will display all the packages accordingly but the one we can assure you now is that the price will not change, it remains N5,000.

“We are trying to see how we can make it simple and easy for every Nigerian to be able to afford it.

“We are keeping our promises on the channels and all the channels including BEing Sports channels are there with even more other channels that were not included in our bouquet before.

“We have more channels that are coming and the total number of channels will be over 70,’’ he said.

Some of the beneficiaries of the promo decoder had commended the improvement in the number of channels and quality of the programmes.

  • Pep: i and Mourinho are like twins

Pep: i and Mourinho are like twins

Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho have enjoyed a rivalry, in Spain and England, that has at times been acrimonious but the Manchester City manager believes they have something in common.

The Spaniard believes that when it comes to the desire to win trophies they are identical.

“Definitely. In that, we are twins,” said Guardiola when asked, ahead of Sunday’s derby clash, if he was as obsessed with winning as his United and former Real Madrid counterpart.

“They want to win trophies, we want to win trophies.

“I think Antonio Conte is the same as well, and Jurgen (Klopp) and Mauricio (Pochettino), and in all the leagues around the world, the managers are (like that),” the former FC Barcelona manager added.

“I never criticise my colleagues for the way they play. I never did in the past, I will never do it.

“Football is magnificent for that, because every manager plays in the way they play. There are different ways to enjoy football. It’s simple like that,” he said.

Keeping it simple is Guardiola’s mantra ahead of the highly anticipated derby.

Although City head to Old Trafford with an eight-point lead over their local rivals, the Spaniard is determined that his team keep their focus.

Their focus, he said, will be on doing what they have done so well this season — playing their style of possession football.

“The big challenge is to play good, to try to control the start point. It’s hard, because it’s United at Old Trafford. We want to try to play our game.

“The focus is going there relaxed and knowing that if we don’t win the individual duels, it will be almost impossible to beat them,” Guardiola said.

“We will try to play well, to play good football, what we have done, to be what we are. So I would like to finish the game and go to the locker room and feel we were what we have been for the season.

“As for the result, nobody knows what is going to happen. We will try to find the best way to play well and to win the game,” he said.

While a victory would send City 11 points clear ahead of the festive season, Guardiola has little time for the notion that the game could be a title decider.

“Winning, drawing or losing on Sunday, we are not going to win or lose the English Premier League. It’s December,” he said.

“It’s an important game, because it’s United. You can get points and deny your opponent points. But it’s the same for them.

“I am not going into the game thinking: OK, we have an eight-point lead. What do I have to do because we have an eight-point lead? The Premier League is a marathon. We haven’t even arrived at the halfway stage yet.

“There are a lot of points to play for, more than 70. We just focus on the game, and the result, and then after, recovery and then thinking about Swansea three days later.

“It’s simple like that. It’s about going there and doing our game. That is what I want to see from my players.”

Mechanic in court for absconding with vehicle

A 42-year-old mechanic, Isah Danjuma, who allegedly absconded with a vehicle valued at N750,000 was on Friday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

The accused was arraigned before the Magistrate, Mrs Y.O Ekogbulu, on a charge of obtaining money under false pretences and stealing.

Danjuma, who resides at the Agege area of Lagos, however, pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge and was admitted to bail in the sum of N250, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

Ekogbulu said that the sureties should be gainfully employed and show evidence of two years’ tax payments to the Lagos State Government.

According to the Prosecutor, Insp. Clement Okuoimose, the accused committed the offences on Dec 28, 2014 at Oredapo Street, Agege, Lagos.

He said that the accused obtained N750, 000 from Madi Abdullahi, under the pretext of selling his vehicle to him.

“The accused approached the complainant telling him to buy his DAF vehicle 28 model at N750, 000.

“The complainant did not have the money, so he contacted his brother in the North to come and buy the vehicle.

“His brother came to Lagos and inspected the vehicle and he liked it, paid N400, 000 into the accused’s bank account and promised to pay the balance the following day.

“Immediately the balance of N350, 000 was paid the following day, the accused relocated with the vehicle to an unknown destination and was nowhere to be found again.

“All efforts made by the complainant to retrieve the money or the vehicle proved unsuccessful,” he said.

Okuoimose said that the accused was later arrested after three years of his disappearance with the vehicle.

The offences contravened Sections 287 and 314 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015(Revised).

The accused may be jailed for 15 years, if found guilty of obtaining money under false pretences, according to the provisions of Section 314.

The case was adjourned until January 10  for mention.

I believed woman who accused Zuma of rape – Deputy president

South Africa Deputy President, Cyril Ramaphosa, said he believed the woman who filed rape charges against President Jacob Zuma in 2006.

Zuma was tried and acquitted of raping Fezekile Kuzwayo, also know as Khwezi, 11 years ago, when she was a guest in his home.

In spite the acquittal the trial damaged Zuma’s reputation, not least because Khwezi – who died in 2016, was HIV-positive and Zuma told the court that he had taken the precaution of “showering” after unprotected sex.

Ramaphosa, who is vying with Zuma for leadership of the ANC and, therefore, the country, made the remarks during a radio interview on Thursday night.

When pressed on the rape allegations, Ramaphosa at first demurred before saying: “Yes, I would believe her.”

“I know how difficult and painful it is for a woman to garner up the courage to stand up and say, ‘Yes, I was raped.

“It must be one of the most difficult decisions that she has to make,” he said.

Ramaphosa has been Zuma’s deputy since 2014.
