Maritime University: 304 ex-agitators apply for jobs – Boroh

The Coordinator, Presidential Amnesty Programme ( PAP ), Brig.-Gen. Paul Boroh, said on Thursday that 304 amnesty beneficiaries had applied for job at the Maritime University, Okerenkoko, Delta State.

Boroh, who is also the Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta Matters, disclosed this in an interview in Abuja.

The Coordinator said the University had commenced operations and placed advertisements for those interested in working with the institution as academic staff.

He said that President Muhammadu Buhari had approved increase in the of take-off grant for the University from the earlier  N2 billion announced to N5 billion.

He said the grant had already been included in the 2018 budget, under the Federal Ministry of Education allocation, presented to the National Assembly.

Boroh described the recent upward review of the earlier budgetary allocation from N2 billion to 5 billion in the 2018 budget for the new university, as a show of commitment on the part of the President towards sustainable peace, stability and development in the region.

He assured that the University would  create massive employment opportunities for youths in the region, adding that so many youths have been trained in different disciplines and vocations.

Many of them were trained in marine engineering, maritime studies, seamanship, shipping, marine transport related studies, diving, underwater welding, automobile engineering, aviation, tourism and hospitality, agriculture, particularly in aquaculture.

The Special Adviser said the youths can fill the manpower gap in the maritime sector, using the maritime university as the channel.

Boroh added that the maritime university would continue to provide the platform for many other economic activities and development that would shape the geo-political and socio-economic dynamics in the region.

He said the University is now hiring professors, readers, senior lecturers, lecturers, assistant lecturers and graduate assistants to teach in the faculties of Science, Maritime Transportation, Maritime Engineering & Technology, Maritime Environmental Management and General Studies.

“It is important to see unemployed graduates thinking about how to take control of their career development on a daily basis by developing  their skills, values and interests as this will be helpful to them throughout their working life,”.

The Coordinator , however, urged youths in the region not to give up on their dreams.

“With high competition for graduate jobs in Nigeria , it’s easy to feel discouraged when looking for a job.

“You don’t have to give up on your dream job,”  he said.

He lauded the President for his commitment to the smooth take-off of the University and release of grant.

He, however, assured that the federal government would sustained the establishment for good.

The Presidential aide stressed the importance of giving support to the planned development of this administration for the ultimate purpose of improving the wellbeing of Nigerians.

“Nigerians should know that the president is human and needs the sincere prayers of all well-meaning Nigerians to move the nation forward,” he said.

Zimbabwe: Oxfam expresses hope of the return of democracy

International charity Oxfam has expressed hope that democracy in Zimbabwe would hold, after the country’s military took over.

Stewart Muchapera, Oxfam’s media and communications adviser for Southern Africa, told Sputnik: “for now I think everything is calm and there is an air of opportunity. The situation remains calm and our hope is that the tenants of democracy should hold,”

On Tuesday, media reported that armored vehicles had been moving toward the Zimbabwean capital of Harare.

Media also said that there were explosions in the city. The country’s military explained that it was mobilising against the criminals.

Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe is reportedly under heavy guard.

Muchapera, who is on ground in Harare, said, inspite of a large-scale military presence in Harare, residents have continued with their everyday lives.

“I think in terms of armored vehicles they are only in strategic points and people are going on with their day-to-day lives and there have not been any shots in the streets.

“Yes, there is a heavy presence of soldiers in the city but everything is normal,” Muchapera said.

The ongoing situation is unlikely to affect the charity’s activities in the country, the Oxfam communications adviser added.

“[Our operations will] not necessarily [be affected]. Our operations are going on and we are continuing our investment into the community.

“We are here to help the needy in the community,” Muchapera said.

On Nov. 6, Mugabe fired Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who had been considered the president’s potential successor and had the support of the armed forces.

On Monday, Constantine Chiwenga, the commander of the Zimbabwe Defense Forces, called on the president to end the purge within the ruling Zimbabwe African National Union – Patriotic Front (Zanu-PF) party, from which Mnangagwa had been expelled.

Dalung urges NASS to allocate more funds to sports

Solomon Dalung, Minister of Youth and Sports on Wednesday called on the National Assembly to allocate more funds to sports in Nigeria.

Dalung made the call in Abuja while receiving the victorious Nigeria Scrabble Federation National Team from the World English Scrabble Players Association Championship ( WESPAC ) in Nairobi, Kenya, led by its president, Suleiman Gora.

According to him, in the last two years, the ministry of Youth and Sports has done better than any other ministry because we have brought glory to the country.

“Since this is the situation, we need more funds to develop sports.

“A situation where federations that have made the country proud have yearly budgetary allocation of between N30 or N40 billion, which cannot even fund one trip is unacceptable.

“We have over stretched the commitment of our people because members of the federation had at all time been contributing their  monies in order to sponsor trips.

“Let us demonstrate commitment as a government by providing better support so that we can take governance in the federations to the next level,’’ he said.

Dalung appealed to the private sector to develop interest in the sponsorship of different sports in Nigeria and invest in it.

“The multinational companies should develop interest in individual athletes, pick and train athletes, this will be better for sports in the country” he further said.

He, however, pledged to constantly support the federation in all of its activities.

Earlier, Gora informed the Minster that Nigeria had emerged the best scrabble playing nation for the second time running in the history of the sports.

“We are making history for the second time. This is the first country in the world and the only Black Country to have won the  championship back to back.

“In Nairobi, we got 54 countries participating from over the world and we had countries representation of 169 players.

“In scrabble the top 15 positions are the ones that are considered for winning positions. Nigeria had five of her players in the top 15.

“We went there as the World Champions in terms of country representation and on individual basis.

“I am happy to inform you that we fought gallantly for the individual position up to the finals, at the end of 32 games, Moses Peter of Nigeria come second,’’ he said.

Presenting the trophy, Gora called for more funds to help the federation to win more laurels for the country.

for you to end your pain worries

    Product One

    Forever Freedom

We’ve taken Glucosamine Sulfate and Chondroitin Sulfate – two naturally occurring elements that have been shown to help maintain healthy joint function and mobility – and married them with our stabilized Aloe Vera gel. To this, we’ve added vitamin C and MSM, a primary source of bio-available sulfur the body needs to maintain healthy connective tissues and joint function.

Glucosamine Sulfate and Chondroitin Sulfate are natural substances that help maintain the structure and health of cartilage, keeping this natural “shock absorber” well hydrated. They also help keep the lubricating fluid within the joint at the necessary viscosity to allow one surface to glide freely over another. As the body ages, it is less able to produce these natural elements of healthy cartilage which can then lead to “wear and tear” on the joints.

    Product Two

    Forever Calcium

Science has shown that as we age our ability to absorb calcium reduces. In fact some reports indicate that our ability to absorb calcium from our diet declines by 60% from childhood to adulthood. What can you do to promote healthy bones and teeth? Forever Calcium® provides the clinically proven quantities of Calcium, Magnesium, Zinc, Manganese, Copper and the Vitamins C & D to help maintain proper bone structure and function.

You depend on the strength of your body every day, and it starts from the inside out. Forever’s new form of calcium, Di-Calcium malate, is most effective at promoting optimum bone building since it stays in the blood stream longer and does not interfere with the natural pH balance in the stomach. Additionally, our proprietary mineral blend is smaller and more absorbable

  • Actress, Remi Oshodi tasks government on child education

Actress, Remi Oshodi tasks government on child education

Nollywood actress, Remi Oshodi, popularly known as Remi Surutu, has called on the present administration and key stakeholders to join hands to push the nation’s education system forward.

Speaking at a press conference put together by the Goldfish Initiative for Illiteracy and Poverty Alleviation last Tuesday, the actress said that it is very sad that majority of Nigerians cannot afford basic education for their children.

“I attended nursery school; I grew up being carried in a car to school, so I feel for those who cannot afford an education. That was why when I was called last year, I felt so moved and I decided to go with them. Because people live in luxury, they see every other person as beneath them and that should not be the case. You have to look for a way to encourage them,” she said.

Also speaking, founder of The Goldfish Initiative for Illiteracy and Poverty Alleviation, Chimanma Rushworth-Moore called on President Muhammadu Buhari and the Minister Education, Adamu Adamu, to raise the standard of education in Nigeria and also make the Nigerian child welfare a priority.

She charged the Federal Government to make education the right of every child, stating that many children in the rural areas can neither read nor write due to circumstances they find themselves.

“Anyone who cannot read or write does not exist because he or she cannot vote. Many children go to school half naked while many sit on the floor in rickety classrooms to learn.  Many Nigerian children lack basic welfare. Children’s welfare and protection should be non-negotiable and this is why Goldfish initiative is the voice of these children who cannot speak for themselves,” she said.

She therefore called on Federal Government to make things right by allowing money to flow through the right source to alleviate poverty completely.

The organisaton also held a walk against child illiteracy on Thursday.
