  • Court remands housewife for beating mother-in-law to coma

    An Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrate’s Court has remanded in prison a housewife, Adenike Olowookere for allegedly attempting to kill her mother-in-law.

    The 30-year-old was accused of ruthlessly beating her 63-year-old mother-in-law, Mrs Comfort Olowookere, which almost led to the death of the latter.

    The mother-in-law was saved by the intervention of Good Samaritans who rescued her from the grip of her daughter-in-law.

    Adenike’s attack left the mother-in-law in a state of coma in an undisclosed hospital where she was rushed to after the incident.

    Police Prosecutor, Inspector Bankole Olasunkanmi, told the court that Adenike committed the offence on September 9 in Ado-Ekiti within the Ado Ekiti Magisterial District.

    Olasunkanmi said a charge of attempted murder has been slammed on the accused whose address was not provided.

    The offence, according to Olasunkanmi, contravened Section 320 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ekiti State, 2012.

    The prosecutor urged the Court to remand the defendant in prison pending legal advice from office of Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).

    The plea of the defendant was not taken.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mr. Abdulhamid Lawal, ordered the remand of the defendant and adjourned the case until October 17 for mention.

  • Davido to make Hollywood debut in ‘Coming to America 2’

    Nigerian international music superstar, Davido, is set to make acting debut in Hollywood, with a performance role in the sequel of the 1988 romantic comedy classic, “Coming To America”.

    African-American comedian and actor, Michael Blackson disclosed this on his verified Twitter handle @MichaelBlackson, congratulating Davido.

    Blackson wrote: “Davido told me he has a performance scene in the movie #ComingToAmerica2, congrats homie.”

    Although, Davido has not confirmed or debunked the report, industry watchers are taking the post seriously, as fans are already congratulating the “Assurance” crooner.

    Filming for the sequel, ‘Coming to America 2’, has begun in Atlanta, Georgia, and it is scheduled to be released on Dec. 18, 2020 in the United States.

    It is produced by Kevin Misher and directed by Craig Brewer, from a screenplay by David Sheffield, Barry W. Blaustein, and Kenya Barris, based on characters created by Eddie Murphy.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that ”Coming to America” is a blockbuster romantic comedy film directed by John Landi, based on a story originally created by veteran actor Eddie Murphy, who played the lead role.

    The film also co-stars Arsenio Hall, James Earl Jones, Shari Headley and John Amos, and was released in the United States on June 29, 1988.

    Eddie Murphy plays Akeem Joffer, a crown prince of a wealthy African nation of Zamunda who grows weary of his pampered lifestyle on his 21st birthday and wishes to do more for himself.

  • Police exhume 10 bodies from shallow graves

    Benue State Police Command has confirmed that four suspects have been arrested in connection with 10 bodies found buried in a shallow graves in Benue community.

    On Wednesday, police detectives led a suspect to a thick forest in Agbatse village, Ushonho Local government area in Benue state and exhumed 10 bodies killed and hurriedly buried in shallow graves.

    The 30-year-old suspect told the police that he killed about 30 people, mostly Okada riders and buried them secretly.

    The suspect said he was acting on a direction of juju man who prepared a charm for him and assured if he killed a certain number of people, he will have supernatural powers like wanted criminal gang leader Terwase Akwaza aka Gana.

    Police spokesperson Kate Anene confirmed the incident and said four suspects have been arrested in connection with the crime and would be paraded on Friday.

  • My illness pushed me to steal baby – suspect

    A mother of three, Oluwatoyin Lasisi , who was arrested by the Oyo state police command for stealing a three- year- old baby in Ibadan on Thursday blamed her action on the sickness threatening her life.

    On interrogation, the suspect who was paraded by the Oyo Police Command on Thursday, disclosed she is suffering from mental disease and epilepsy .

    The three-year-old baby, Nimotallah Sulaiman, according to her was found at dump site at Muslim area of Ibadan.

    While explaining that she did not know when she picked the baby from the refuse dump site and took her to her personal house, Lasisi stated that the dump site was where she usually sit to beg for alms .

    According to her, the sickness usually affects her sense of reasoning and pushes her to do unreasonable things.

    Speaking on how she stole the baby, the suspect said; “I was just going to where I beg for alms in a bakery around Muslim area of Ibadan and I saw the little baby, Nimotallah Sulaiman. I reasoned that it wont be good of me to allow her be stolen by ritualists and that was why I picked her.

    “I didn’t know when I backed her and took her to my house. When I got to my house, a woman in my neighborhood was challenging me where I got the baby from. I told her that the baby belongs to my brother who had matrimonial problem.

    “When she started disturbing me, I told her that I would take the baby back to her parent that night. I was heading to police station when some people stopped me and started beating me. That was when they took me to police station,” she recalled.

    The father of the victim, Sulaiman Dauda who described the situation as pathetic said the baby was stolen at a refuse dump site where she went to defecate alone, an act which he blamed on his wife’s stupidity.

    “The baby told her mother that she wanted to defecate and she allowed her alone to go to the dump site close to her shop. When she left her in the site, this woman came and stole the baby. That was when we knew there was a problem, ” the father of the baby told newsmen .

    Commissioner of Police, Shina Olukolu, said; “upon information received from the people of the area, police arrested her and investigated the case.”

    He said when interrogated, she informed the police that she was in the area to beg for alms when she sighted the baby who was later identified as Nimotallah.

  • I killed 15 women in seven states – Rivers serial killer

    The last is yet to be heard of the serial killing of young women in hotels in Rivers state, following the latest confession allegedly made by the prime suspect, Gracious David-West confessed to killing a total of 15 women across seven states of the federation.

    Spokesman of the state Police command, Nnamdi Omoni, Deputy Superintendent of Police(DSP), who confirmed this to The Nation via a telephone interview Wednesday said the cultist of the Dey-gbam fraternity said he killed one person each in Abia, Edo, Ibadan in Oyo, Owerri in Imo, Ikeja in Lagos state where the act started few months ago and nine in Rivers state.

    It would be recalled that over 10 young women were allegedly killed in different hotels in Rivers state in the past two months.

    The number escalated last week, when at least five were killed within three days, a situation that caused grave panic in the state, leading to series of protest by women groups and some Civil Society groups.

    The protesters urged security agencies in state especially the Department of Security Services (DSS) and the police to do everything within their powers to fish out the person(s) or even group behind the dastardly act and that the judiciary must ensure justice is done when arrested, even as they seriously demanded for the enactment of very stiff laws against such unprovoked killings in the stat

    The protesters also demanded that hotels and entertainment outfits in the state installs security gadgets in their business premises, reception, especially the Close Circuit Television Cameras (CCTV) to document all guests to the hotel,

    David-West was apprehended while trying to escape the intense heat his actions was generating in the state.

    He was on his way to Uyo, Akwa Ibom state apparently to continue in the evil act, but a viral CCTV video of his last attack got on his way, making his arrest easy.

    He confessed to the crime and said he had already killed seven women before he was apprehended.

    While the World is still pondering over that, more facts emerged Wednesday that the suspect who hails from Buguma in Akuku-Toru Local Government Area of the state has further confessed that the actual number of women he killed was 15, and in seven states, and nine in his home state alone.

    David-West, an alleged repentant cultist (Dey-gbam confraternity), told newsmen that he takes joy in strangling young women in hotels whenever the urge to kill comes.

    He claimed that he did not cut his victim’s vital parts.

  • Dickson redeploys youth commissioner

    Bayelsa Governor, Seriake Dickson, has redeployed the Commissioner for Youth Development in the state, Udengs Eradiri, to the Ministry of Environment.

    A statement by Dickson’s Chief Press Secretary, Fidelis Soriwei, described the redeployment as a minor cabinet reshuffling.

    The statement also named the former Commissioner for Environment, Ebipatei Apaingolo, as the new Commissioner for Youth Development.

    Soriwei said the governor also assigned Churson Obosi, to the newly created ministry of NGOs, Cooperatative and Diaspora Affairs.

  • JUST IN: Policeman killed as robbers attack bank in Ekiti

    A police officer has been confirmed dead and many persons wounded in a bank robbery in Ise-Ekiti, the headquarters of Ise/Orun Local Government Area of the state.

    The deceased was said to be a security official with a branch of Wema Bank located at the heart of the ancient town.

    The robbers, according to sources, stormed the bank around 2pm on Thursday with two vehicles through Ikere road.

    The multiple sources said the robbers forced their way into the banking hall with dynamite and carted away huge amount of money stacked in five ‘Ghana must go bag’

    The source said the robbers were said to have shot sporadically into the air to scare those within the vicinity of the bank.

    Several staff of the bank and customers who came for transaction were said to have been attacked and injured.

    The Police Public Relations officer, Ekiti Command, DSP Caleb Ikechukwu, who confirmed the incident, said the robbers attacked the bank with dynamite and gained entry into the banking hall.

    “I can confirm to you that a bank was robbed at Ise Ekiti this afternoon. And a policeman killed.

    “The robbers broke the security door with Explosive Material, precisely dynamite.

    “Our men are on their trail and we shall ensure that none of them escape.

    “Members of the public should go about their normal duties and be rest assured that we are ready to protect their lives and property at all times,” the police spokesmen stated.

  • Police confirm ASP’s death in suspected kidnappers’ seige on Abuja-Lokoja road

    The police in Lokoja, Kogi State have confirmed the killing of an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) and another victim, when suspected kidnappers laid siege on the Koton-Karfe axis of the Abuja-Lokoja highway.

    The police command said investigation into the shooting has commenced and the perpetrators will be apprehended.

    Suspected kidnappers had on Tuesday evening opened fire on an Abuja-bound passenger bus, around Koton-Karfe, killing an unspecified number of passengers.

    Others escaped with bullet wounds.

    They shot severally into a Sharon bus, said to be coming from Port-Harcourt.

    The occupants of a Toyota Camry, coming from Ibadan to Abuja, who escaped the scene sustained various degrees of injuries.

    Speaking with our correspondent on Thursday in Lokoja, the command’s image maker, William Aya, said that the commissioner of police has ordered a manhunt for the suspects and rescue of the victims.

    Aya, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), said two people, including a senior police officer, died from the shooting.

    “On yesterday’s incident at Gegu Beki, only two people lost their lives while others sustained injuries.

    “The victims are one ASP and one yet-to-be identified person. They died as a result of accident and not gunshot. The vehicles ran into kidnap scene and as a result somersaulted, and that led to the death of the two persons, as against eight as earlier reported.”

    He said that other victims were receiving treatment at the Hospital.

    “The Commissioner of Police has ordered for a complete manhunt of the kidnappers and to rescue the victims,” added Aya.

    One of the survivors had said that the incidental happened around 5.58 pm.

    He said that he and four others that were in the Toyota Camry, were on their way from Ibadan, and heading for Abuja, when suddenly they sighted some masked men in military gears about two kilometers away.

    He said that the attackers wore military camouflage, with black mask and were stopping vehicles.

    According to him, some of the occupants of the vehicles they stopped were marched into the bush.

    He said that the driver of the Sharon bus coming from Port-Harcourt, on sighting them, tried to escape, was shot at, deflating the tires.

    According to him: “It was at this point we noticed that they may be kidnappers. Our driver then engaged reverse gear and they started firing at our car.

    “The driver was hit on the shoulder with the bullet coming out at the other side and it hit the man at the back seat on the head.”

    He said that they drove to the Gegu police station, from where arrangement was made for their evacuation to the Koton-Karfe General Hospital, from where they were taken to the Federal Medical Center Lokoja.

    He said the driver was referred to the National Hospital Abuja, while another occupant who sustained bullet wounds to the head was referred to the University College Hospital (UCH) Ibadan, to remove bullets lodged in his head.

    According to the Police Extract diary obtained by our correspondent, the incident was reported on Wednesday by one of the victims.

  • Oyo to revoke lands without proper documents

    Oyo State Government has called on residents of the state to ensure that they update their land documents so as not to fall victims to land revocation or property demolition.

    The Commissioner for Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Abiodun Abdu-Raheem, while on a duty tour of the various sites owned by the state government in Ibadan, the state capital, said the present administration had picked interest in the issue of lands across the state for proper documentation and accessibility.

    He said: “This is the right time for the good people of Oyo State to know that things should be done in the proper manner. Anyone that does not have up-to-date documents should do so because the ministry would be paying unscheduled visits to various sites to check if such sites have genuine approval.

    “If there is any infraction whatsoever from anyone on the sites visited, the person would face the full wrath of the law as the present administration is not out to witch hunt anybody, but to enforce law and order and to ensure that proper approval is given before construction on sites is carried out.”

    The commissioner, who was in company with the permanent secretary and some directors of the ministry, also served a stop-work notice on the contractors handling the construction of some houses at Mami Market Agodi, GRA and a water corporation building at Jericho, a statement by the state’s Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Dr. Wasiu Olatunbosun, said.

    He asked the contractors to report at the ministry with necessary documents for the construction of the site.

    The team also visited the industrial park as well as free trade zone along Lagos-Ibadan Expressway to assess the lands in the area.

    Meanwhile, in its bid to bring succour to both working and retired citizens of Oyo State, the Governor Seyi Makinde-led administration has distributed cheques for the payment of gratuities.

    The Commissioner for Establishments and Training, Olasunkanmi Olaleye, disclosed that the governor had released over N180million for the payment of the 2012 outstanding, and part of 2013 gratuity allowance for the retirees of the respective years in the state’s civil service.

    Olaleye stated that the Governor Seyi Makinde led Administration had doubled the amount earmarked monthly for the payment of gratuity in order to clear the back log arrears and make it as the landmark of payment of gratuity to workers as they retires.
