Support APC govt, woman leader urges Nigerians

Woman leader of the Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhaja Sola Oyedele, has urged Nigerians to support President Muhammadu Buhari to enable him to succeed in moving the country forward.

Speaking to reporters in her Lagos residence while hosting some of the party’s dignitaries to mark the victory of the APC at both state and national level, she said the Buhari administration would succeed if Nigerians give him unflinching support, even as she said it will enable the President to take the country to greater height.

According to her, Nigeria is lucky to have someone such as Buhari as their President, saying the APC administration at both levels will bring development to the country.

She called on Nigerians to join hands with Buhari-led administration to succeed, adding that the APC will take Nigeria to the Promised Land.

Alhaja Oyedele urged President Buhari to ensure unity, peace and harmony in the country. According to her, he should regard all Nigerians as one irrespective of their political and religious affiliations.

“He should not discriminate against any part of the country, no matter the political party, religion, or the ethnic group they come from.

This, according to her, would promote the country’s economic growth and job opportunity.

She also advised the President to ensure that federal roads across the country are rehabilitated, especially federal roads that traversed Lagos State which successive administrations abandoned.

Lagos State, she said, is one of the largest cities in Africa as well as economic capital of West African sub-region.

She also urged the President to empower women and ensure they take part in his government. According to her, women are honest and easy to control. Their motherly disposition will bring sanity to the society if they are part of decision-making process.

She also advised Governor Akinwunmi Ambode to build on and consolidate former Governor Fashola’s achievements.

  • ‘Nigerians should be patient with the People’s General’

Lagos State All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain Alhaji Toyin Balogun, has advised Nigerians to cooperate with President Muhammadu Buhari.

He urged them to be patient with the administration, assuring that the president will not let them down

In a statement, he said governance is a collective enterprise.

He said: Is neither surprising nor shocking, but understandable, that Nigerians expectation of the coming government headed by the people’s general. (President-elect Gen. Muhammadu Buhari) is sky high. We all should appreciate the fact that Nigerians have endured for so long in the hands of clueless leaders, and definitely there is a limit to what the oppressed can endure. It is a common knowledge that the outgoing government over stretched people’s endurance and tolerance.

“Millions of people were made to exist in and unprecedented hardship while we read and hear in the news how Billions of Nigeria oil money could not be accounted for by the NNPC. Impunity was the order of the day; caution was an alien in the corridor of power, our president (Goodluck Ebele Jonathan) suddenly became the most powerful president in the world. Nigeria was fast coming to her knees. Coming from this background genuinely rationalized the people’s demand. They really want and truly deserve a better country in no time.

Balogun added: “The coming government is expected to hit the ground running by the long impoverished people of Nigeria. From the first day in the office, President-elect (Gen. Muhammadu Buhari) is expected to turn stone to bread.  To me, their demand is not totally ungodly, they believe they voted into power a government able enough to provide them succors and make them forget in no time the years of torture and anguish that characterized the government of the conservatives’, clueless leaders that could not provide us electricity for 16 good years.

“The problems confronting the nation are too many that no government can tackle in a little space of two years, except we want to distort the truth. The PDP government fed corruption so well in the last sixteen years that it has become a fully grown muster that only a relentless serious effort can cage.

“Unemployment is heart aching. Millions of Nigerians able youths are roaming the street unemployed. Insecurity enveloped the nation, no place is secured from the North to the south, and we cannot even secure our territory.”

Forum seeks Nigerians in Diaspora Commission

Nigerians in Diaspora have urged President Muhammadu Buhari to sign into law the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission Bill.

Speaking in a chat with our correspondent, Coordinator of Nigerians in Diaspora Leadership Forum, Mr. Alistar Soyode, said the bill, which was among the 46 bills passed by the 7th Senate last week, would “provide the engagement of Nigerians in Diaspora in the policies, projects and participation in the development of Nigeria and for the purpose of utilising the human and material resources of Nigerians in Diaspora towards the overall socio-economic, cultural and political development of Nigeria.”

Soyode, who expressed optimism that the president would assent to the bill, added that the Commission would be run by a board of distinguished Nigerians with impeccable record, with a three-year renewable tenure.

When the Commission becomes fully operational, Soyode, who is also the Chief Executive Officer of UK-based BEN TV, said it would comprise of representatives from each of the 36 states of the federation. He said the Commission would have a comprehensive data base of Nigerians in Diaspora.

  • National Assembly Nigerians deserve

SIR: As the Eighth National Assembly is being inaugurated today, Nigerians want to see blunt, wise, brave, intelligent, thorough and courageous lawmakers. Those who will not spare even their party members and colleagues who choose a wrong path to the detriment of the citizens; those that will be unmovable when they reach a conclusion about the right thing that ought to be done, those that have sense of details and deep knowledge of policy, especially given their roles as monitors of federal agencies.

Nigerians expect lawmakers that will not be the proponents of ‘take a bow and go’ during the screening of nominees for appointments; those that will consider congressional and committee hearings as critical part of their jobs, those that will not compromise committees and probe panels, those that won’t allow evasive witness to outwit them.

We need those that will fight for the working class, health care, education; those that will penalise discriminations and those that will shun playing religious, ethnic, tribal and regional cards for the betterment of our country.

As one of the highest paid legislators in the world, we expect various legislative committees to employ Professors, Ph.D holders, retired career civil servants, analysts and professionals as technical /special/legislative assistants who are more update with the current global challenges and trends. The change Nigerians are yearning for will not come to be without the dedication, patriotism and scarifies from the legislative arm of government.

  • What we expect from Buhari, by Nigerians in South Africa

What we expect from Buhari, by Nigerians in South Africa

Some Nigerians resident in South Africa yesterday urged the Federal Government to tackle insecurity, unemployment, epileptic power supply and poverty facing the country.

The Nigerians made the call at the sidelines of the inauguration of the National Secretariat of the Nigerian Union in Pretoria, South Africa.

Prof. Dele Braimoh, a retired professor of Adult and Distance Education, University of South Africa, urged the Federal Government to tackle insecurity in the country.

‘’ Many Nigerians in the Diaspora are afraid of going home because of insecurity.  I appeal to the government to win the war against Boko Haram to bring peace to the North Eastern part of the country,’’ he said.

Braimoh also said many Nigerians in the Diaspora were willing to return to contribute to the development of the country in various fields.

Senior Pastor, Jesus The Breathe of Life International Ministry, Pretoria Rev. Harold Anagu urged the Federal Government to work for the unity of the country.

‘’ We thank God for a successful election and inauguration of a new administration in Nigeria. We also want the government to ensure unity, empowerment and understanding among the people.

‘’Nigerians in South Africa want a relationship with the Buhari administration to enable us contribute to the development of the country,’’ he said.

Chairman of the Nigeria Union, NorthWest Province Chapter Mr Chikaodili Nwanedo called on the government to tackle epileptic power supply in the country.

He said inadequate power supply had taken its toll on Small and Medium Scale businesses in the country.

‘’ Nigerians also need good health care and efforts should be made to tackle poverty,’’ he said.

Chairman of the Nigerian Union, Gauteng Province Chapter Mr Mathew Okafor urged the Federal Government to tackle insurgency and improve on intelligence gathering.

Okafor, an IT specialist in Johannesburg, commended Buhari for relocating the command centre of the armed forces to Maiduguri in order to effectively insurgency.

‘’ To me, this is a step in the right direction. Nigeria has a good army. We need to equip our army to make it fight the new enemy that is using guerrilla warfare.

‘’ Guerrilla warfare is alien to us and I believe we will defeat the enemy,’’ he said.

The President of Arewa in South Africa, Mr Nimram Longbap, said Nigeria was blessed with resources to make her the leading economy in Africa.

‘’ Buhari has a track record of performance and we believe he can still do it again. The Federal Government should embark on massive road construction aimed at opening up the country such that each state would be linked to its nearest neighbour,’’ he said.

Longbap also said the Federal Government had the potential to win the war against the Boko Haram.

‘’ I appeal to other intelligence agencies in the country to sit up and assist the armed forces in intelligence gathering to overcome the insurgents,’’ he said.

  • Nigerians hail new government, demand reforms

Nigerians hail new government, demand reforms

Against the background of the massive endorsement it received at the March 28 election, the new administration of President Muhammadu Buhari will face many challenges. Deputy Political Editor RAYMOND MORDI and Assistant Editor LEKE SALAUDEEN highlight peoples’ expectations about the new government.

Given the groundswell of support that catapulted President Muhammadu Buhari to power, the new administration is expected to hit the ground running, if it wants to avoid the kind of fate that befell the Jonathan administration. Former President Goodluck Jonathan’s honeymoon lasted for only six months. The tide of public opinion turned against him when he attempted to withdraw fuel subsidy in January 2012.

Against this background, experts say the political appointments of the new administration must be merit-based. Indeed, the composition of the President’s cabinet is an immediate signal that would provide very strong indications of what lays in store for Nigerians. They want the Buhari administration to fill his cabinet with competent, ethical people and reform-minded people. This is because putting the best and the most competent hands at the helms of affairs will allow for smooth, effective and transparent running of the new government.

As the Chairman, Board of Directors of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN), Chief Bisi Ogunjobi, aptly puts it, the administration requires a robust economic and political team at the helm of affairs at all levels. He said: While in accordance to the Constitution, each state is entitled to have a Minister or Minister of State, not more than two-third of them should be full Ministers with one-third being Ministers of State thereby implicitly capping the number of Ministers at 24.

“Each state should endeavor to nominate their three best or top persons with at least one of them a technocrat. All the three nominees must be persons of good character possessing a track record of professional and administrative expertise and experience. Thus, the President will have a large pool of capable persons to nominate to the Senate as Ministers with the appropriate portfolios indicated for screening.

“I expect the new administration to hit the ground running as an opposition party that has over the years been waiting to be the government with their alternative policies and programmes. In particular, I expect the President who is fourth time lucky to have a well thought out vision for the country and roll out the key elements within the first 100 days before the honey moon is over. Certainly, I expect strong and clear actions and not mere intentions.

“More specifically, I expect workable solutions to the near intractable problem of electricity and power supply. On fuel scarcity, the full liberalization of the sector must be pursued vigorously with the privatization of the refineries. Corruption must be tackled at levels with no sacred cows while the relevant Agencies must be reformed and provided with resources and enforcement teeth. Protection of Life and property must be sacrosanct bringing Boko Haram and kidnapping to an end.

“Like the proverbial white teeth of a dead dog, the new administration must identify, preserve and build on positive and good programmes and policies of the Jonathan administration without wasting time and resources in reinventing the wheels just for the sake of bringing about ‘change”.

A senior advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Mallam Yusuf Alli, said his expectations from the Buhari administration are similar to the demands of the general public. The task before President Muhammadu Buhari is enormous. He said: “Buhari inherited a lot of problems. Many things have to be fixed. We all know the challenges facing us in this country. We have shortage of utilities which have been compounded by corruption in every sphere of our national life. The political gladiators have entrenched corruption into every sector. They used money to induce voters in the last general election but they failed to change the minds of the majority.

“I am happy the President mentioned in his inaugural speech corruption, power supply, employment opportunities and economy as areas his administration will give priority. Stable power supply is so crucial to our existence. I believe once the power supply is stable, the economy will bounce back. The employers of labour will re-open shop and create job opportunities for the unemployed.

“It is assuring that President Buhari’s speech touched every vital of our national life. I wish all Nigerians should support him in tackling these problems so that the loss glory of the country could be restored. I hope he will muster the political will in carrying out all necessary reforms.”

Bishop of Lagos Central, Methodist Church of Nigeria, Rt. Rev. Kehinde Adeyemi observed that the problems of this country are too many and only God can solve them. He said President Buhari cannot easily solve them at a go because he is not a magician. Only prayers to God to show mercy and the co-operation of all Nigerians can help, he said.

The cleric however noted that corruption had eaten deep into the nation’s fabrics and blamed the political class for the malaise. This is a major problem that the new administration must tackle effectively for it to make progress. He urged Nigerians to support the new government so that it will fulfil its promises.

A United States-based Nigerian Space scientist, Dr. Bright Aregs, said no nation with security challenges can ever develop. According to him: “If the national business environment is safe and free of violence, businesses thrive, infrastructural development improves and the economy grows and so the value of the national currency. Under this setting, Nigeria people will start to ignite their sense of patriotism and begin to believe in the project-Nigeria.

“What the government of President Muhammadu Buhari must do to mollify the expectations of the greater masses, is to stalwartly focus on conducive national business environments while protecting our borders, this is what will encourage Nigerians to invest in Nigeria and greatly attract Foreign Direct Investments (FDI), which is always the backbone of a nation desiring to grow and sustain its economy.

“Nigeria is considered poor by developed countries because it lacks manufacturing industries and most importantly, it lacks foreign investments from major multi-national corporations in the areas that include manufacturing, research and development, communications and transportation infrastructures. Nigeria remains unreachable and thus unable to attract many of the foreign investors it desperately needed to grow its economy.

Former Minister of Finance, Dr. Onaolapo Soleye expects President Buhari to turn around the fortunes of Nigeria for better; turn the present economic woes to economic gains for the country and Nigerians.

Soleye who served under Buhari military regime said: “I expect him not to compromise his frankness, straight- forwardness and thoroughness in the name of anything. In anything he does as the President, I want him to always place the interest of Nigerians at heart and not that of his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC). He must not compromise critical values he believed in like his anti-corruption stance. Under no circumstance should he concede to corrupt elements. He must let people know that the situation has changed through his actions and utterances.

“I suggest that he should address the inability of many state governments to pay workers salaries. Though it is not the Federal Government that owes, but he should not forget that he is the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. I also want to canvass for the reduction in the cost of running government by at least 50 per cent. We are wasting money in running government. I find it scandalous that our Senate President earns more than the United States President. It is spendthrift which must be addressed.

The Senator-elect for Kaduna Central District, Comrade Shehu Sani expects Nigeria under Buhari presidency to reassert its leadership role in Africa. He said President Buhari must operate an open, transparent and accountable government so as to inspire other countries in Africa and help dissolve the remnants of dictators who still parade the political landscape of the continent.

“President Buhari must in the consolidation or search for peace in African continent; he must lead in the global fight to end the presence of terrorist cells in the continent; he must lead in discouraging and rescuing our young men and women drowning in the Mediterranean Sea in search of a better life in Europe.

“Buhari’s presidency must bring relief and a new hope for our people and our country. We must radiate this to the whole continent. Africa must not be a safe haven for tyrants and terrorists. We must champion the cause of the ideals of freedom, democracy, peace and development in the continent.”

But, Nigerians could be very impatient when it comes to swallowing the bitter pills of implementing a reform programme. Echoing this viewpoint, Mr. Ezenwa Nwagwu, the Chairman of Partners for Electoral Reform, Nigeria, a non-governmental organisation, called on the incoming administration to meet the expectations of Nigerians in good time. He said that the incoming administration should demonstrate leadership by example by reducing the cost of governance.

He said: “The power stations in the country are old, there is need to show more response to power by building new power stations through competitive bidding. If the incoming administration tackles the issue of power headlong, the textile industry will be back and will generate employments.”

In his view, Mr. Bode Towoju, the Coordinator of North Central Zone of Muhammadu Buhari Legacy Foundation, said that one of the significant changes that the Nigerians called for was fight against corruption. He said making a change in other aspects of socio-political activities could be a difficult task without fighting corruption, insisting that corruption in the power sector had almost brought the country to its knee.

In his view, Mr Ayo Thomas, the Director-General of Forum of Emerging Young Socio-Economic and Political Leader, a non-governmental organisation, said that Buhari anchored his campaign on education, employment, corruption and security.

His words: “If you see him throughout the campaign, he never ceased to mention these four cardinal points which he said were the programmes most Nigerians would want him tackled without delay.’’

Thomas noted that if the challenges in education sector, employment and security are identified and addressed, it would provide a clue to tackling other challenges. He advised the new administration to reform the nation’s public service because it remains the engine for executing any government programme.

According to him, politician may not be directly responsible for corruption but the civil servants that are willing to aid and abet. Thomas also observed that there was need to assess political and economic situations in the states and local governments for a realistic plan of action.

An executive of the Construction and Civil Engineering Senior Staff Association, Mr. Umukoro Steve, said that the type of opportunities given to foreign expatriates should be given to Nigerians. He stressed the need to provide the enabling environment for local engineers and scientists to showcase local content so that indigenous technology could grow. “Most times when we bid for projects, we are turned down; up till now, our documents have piled up in various offices; but if they can give us this opportunity, we can do it,” he said, adding:

“Most of these foreigners you see are not better than us; some of them are carpenters in their countries, but they will come here as managers and some only know one side of the field. It’s not the best for our country; because their colour is white, they will just think he is an expatriate.’’

Ahmed Saleh, a member of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), stressed that Nigerian engineers were competent and fit to handle any construction job, irrespective of the size of the projects. He said: “In other countries of the world, they provide jobs for their own people, so it is not good for the country to give jobs that should be done by Nigerians to foreigners.

“The government should try to engage the service of Nigerian engineers in any construction project and only employ the service of foreigners for jobs beyond the capacity of indigenous firms.

In the same vein, James Olaoluwa, an engineer, urged President Buhari to push for the speedy passage of the Bill on Development in Engineering Designing in the country. He said the passage of the bill would enable local engineers to have their names on the list of notable world engineers.

Olaoluwa called on the government to give local engineers a more conducive environment for practice, saying that it would usher in unlimited development.

The Public Relations Officer, National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), Mr. Saffiyanu Attah, said there was need for the administration to make policies that would enhance the health sector so as to give Nigerians easy access to medical services.

Attah urged the President to increase the health budget as there were lot of health issues that needs to be funded. He said: “In respect to this, we are calling on the incoming government that they should kindly look at the NHIS, we have a bill that is in National Assembly. If he can help to improve and pass the bill that will help the NHIS to carry all Nigerians along by giving easy access to quality health services.”

The National President of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN), Mr. Marwan Adamu, said that the incoming administration should ensure that the judiciary operates independently like the other arms of government. Adamu said that it was JUSUN’s expectations that what was due to the Judiciary would be provided. He said it was his conviction that the new government would allow democracy to be sustained in the country.

‘Nigerians should be patient with Buhari’

A governorship aspirant in Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, yesterday asked Nigerians to be patient with President Muhammadu Buhari.

He said Kogi State needs a change of power in the 2016 governorship election.

Bello advised  the All Progressives Congress (APC) leadership to allow free and fair primaries to be able to defeat the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The aspirant, who spoke at a briefing in Abuja, said: “On March 28, change  came. I wish to appeal to all Nigerians to be patient with President Buhari and cooperate with him.

“We are in an unusual situation and it requires an unusual solution. We must all rally round Buhari.

“Kogi deserves change in 2016 because of the poor leadership it is experiencing. Kogi State is disadvantaged; the maladministration is affecting the people.

“When you compare our infrastructural development with other states, there is nothing on ground.  No infrastructure, no human capital development. This is why we believe the wind of change must blow in Kogi State.”

On the presence of heavyweights aspiring to be the APC governorship candidate in Kogi, Bello said: “As long as there will be fair play, I am not intimidated and I cannot be intimidated.

“Ex-Governor Abubakar Audu and other heavyweights have the right to contest for the governorship ticket. I also have the right.

“At the end of the day, it is the citizens who will determine who will be their governor.”

“We believe that the fairness which led to the emergence of President Muhammadu Buhari as the APC presidential candidate will be replicated at the state level.”

Concerning the looming two-party system in the country, Bello said: “The constitution naturally recognises multi-party system but if we are gravitating towards that, so be it.”

  • ‘Nigerians should be patient with the people’s General’

It is neither surprising nor shocking, but understandable, that Nigerians expectation of the coming government headed by the people’s general. (President-elect Gen. Muhammadu Buhari) is sky high. Unemployment is heart aching. Millions of Nigerians able youths are roaming the street unemployed. Insecurity enveloped the nation, no place is secured from the North to the south, and we cannot even secure our territory.

Economy is in shamble, one dollar is equated to #250 yet we were told our economy is the biggest in Africa. In the light of this gigantic nature of our national problems, I appeal to my fellow Nigerians to please exhibit patience and understanding with the coming government. My appeal should not be seen as an attempt to prepare ground for business as usual (excuses). With no iota of doubt in my heart, the coming government is up to the task Nigerians can be sure of that.

I can say this for free, the general and his team are adequately aware of the people’s predicament they definitely know where the shoe pinches, they only need time to stabilize, before setting out to correct the wrongs perpetuated by the outgoing government. 16years of bad government and maladministration cannot be corrected overnight. Nigerians can be rest assured that in no time the coming government will give us all the Nigeria we can be proud of.

  • ‘Buhari will deliver democracy dividends to Nigerians’

Anambra State Progressive Peoples Alliance (PPA) leader Chief Godwin Ezeemo has said President Muhammadu Buhari’s modest lifestyle will enable him to deliver democracy dividends to Nigerians.

He said Buhari should be mindful of those he appoints into his cabinet  to ensure that his administration remains focused on the change mantra that brought him to office.

The PPA chieftain spoke in Abuja at the weekend after Buhari’s inauguration.

“I believe that President Buhari will deliver democracy dividends; that is why I have come from Anambra State to be part of his inauguration.

“I am interested in seeing what will happen. I was in his office in Kaduna in 2013 and I saw his character and humble office. That made me to really appreciate his type of person.

“He didn’t display wealth rather, he displayed confidence that he had the ability to bring everybody together. I strongly believe he can.”

Ezeemo said the battle against corruption would not be easy because the President cannot be everywhere.

He said picking the right persons to work with would enable the President to reduce corruption.

His words: “I know that this is going to be a very difficult area for the administration. The President cannot be everywhere, though we see him to be an upright person.

“What I will suggest is that he must pick people that can deliver. He should not pick people because they come from a particular area not minding their ability to deliver on their mandate.

“If he does not heed to this and picks incompetent persons, they will let him down and he will be blamed for it.

“President Buhari should exercise caution in picking who to work with. If he gets the right people to work with him, we will then be able to fight corruption collectively.

“There should also be CCTV cameras in all offices so that those responsible can monitor the activities that go on in the offices to checkmate corruption.”

Ezeemo urged Buhari to form a government of national unity, saying he should ensure that democracy dividends are shared equitably to all parts of the country.

Buhari, he said should concentrate efforts on the provision of electricity, insisting that most of the country’s problems arise from poor power supply.

“For me, we have problems and these problems have their base on power. Most of the problems we have derive from poor power supply.

“The availability of power in the country is nothing to write home about. If we have constant power supply, industries will spring up in all nooks and crannies of this nation and generate employment for the people.

“If there is constant supply of power, agriculture can take off because we are still struggling in agriculture,” Ezeemo said.
