Take steps to mitigate effects of fuel price hike, NIM urges FG

The Nigerian Institute of Management has urged the Federal Government to take urgent steps to forestall  economic hardship occasioned  by the recent increase in pump price of petrol.

The President of NIM, Dr Christiana Atako, made the call in a statement by the institute’s  registrar,  Mrs Taiwo Olusesi on Saturday in Lagos.

Atako said that it was important to mitigate the harsh effects of the latest increase in the price of fuel on both the economy and Nigerians.

She said that the long fuel queues that resurfaced in various cities had attendant consequences on Nigerians whose cost of living was shrinking by the day.

“The Institute supports the current efforts by the Federal Government to kick-start the nation’s weak economy and put it on a good footing.

“However, NIM is an organisation committed to promoting good governance and sound management practices.

“We believe that government should do everything within its power to give the nation’s economic policies a human face,” she said.

The NIM president urged the Federal Government to continue working with the greater interest of Nigerians at heart by taking more proactive measures to impact the welfare of the citizenry.

She called on government to, especially, address fuel scarcity, the hunger in the land,  as well as tackle the myriad of economic issues facing the country.

“The Institute concedes that the decision to remove fuel subsidy has come with some pains,.

“It is, however, a necessary step towards the nation’s economic stability as it will help to curb the mismanagement of scarce resources

“It will also reduce corruption in the oil sector, and ensure that the benefits of government spending are felt by all Nigerians.

“Since the removal of subsidy is a difficult decision with significant impact on the masses, it is essential that the Federal Government implements measures to mitigate its effects,” she said.

Atako suggested measures like providing a safety tax net for those who would be most impacted by the subsidy removal, greater government intervention in agricultural produce, public transportation and youth employment programmes.

She also enjoined Nigerians to be patient with the Federal Government,  and called for more understanding.

She said that the NIM believed that the nation would soon turn the bend and start reaping the benefits of the present sacrifices.

  • NIM seeks work place industrial harmony

Nigerian workers have been advised to treat difficult bosses as clients that have to manage as this is a way to ensure industrial harmony in work place.

President, American University of Nigeria,  Dawn Delke gave the advice at the 2018 Management Day Lecture of the Nigerian Institute of Management (NIM) in Victoria Island, Lagos, yesterday.

Delke, who was guest lecturer with the theme “Imagining 2019: The New World of Work and Personal Effectiveness’’, said there is need for the establishment of good relationships and understanding between bosses and their subordinates to achieve management excellence in any organisation.

Delke said “56 per cent of workers claim their boss is mildly or highly toxic. 75 per cent of workers say their boss is the most stressful part of their workday, 50 per cent of workers have left a job to get away from the boss at some point in their career.

She stated that teamwork is the bedrock for success in an organisation.

“We are hired for our hard skills, but then fired for lack of our soft skills. It, therefore, behooves on all to identify and develop soft skills that would boost our personal effectiveness.

“We see ourselves based on our potential, but others see us based on our performance,’’ Delke said.

President and Chairman of NIM, Professor Olukunle Iyanda, said the  Management day was set aside to appreciate service, integrity, and efficiency, projecting into the future

he said: “Management Day provides us a platform to propagate the ideals of service, integrity, accountability, and efficiency as tenets of the Management profession.

“It is also a day to appreciate the Nigerian Manager and their contributions to the development of the profession and the nation.”

Speaking on the aim of the 2018 celebration, Iyanda said “This year’s Management Day Lecture looks ahead to the future of the world of work, analyzing the impacts of advanced technologies like automation, robotics and artificial intelligence on how we work, where we work and the skills we need to work.

  • NIM urges public officers on accountability

The Nigerian Institute of Management (NIM) has advised public officers in the country to be accountable and initiate policies and programmes that would improve the standard of living of the citizens.

It further urged the government to respect the principle of federalism which allows every tier of government to enjoy a certain level of autonomy.

Speaking yesterday at opening ceremony of the 2018 Annual National Management Conference at the Afficent Event Centre, Kano, Prof Kamilu Sani Fage of the Department of Political Science, Bayero University Kano, who gave the lecture titled: Re-engineering leadership for National Development at the ceremony, said the surest way to re-engineer leadership for national development is good governance.

He said: “Leaders should initiate progressive economic policies and programmes that should create employment, thus, raising the standard of living of Nigerians. The respect for the rule of law, not only in theory but also in real practice by the constituted bodies, authorities and rest of us should also be enhanced, to promote good governance in Nigeria.

“There must be respect for the principle of federalism whereby autonomy and responsibilities are accorded to every tier of government in the federation.”

In his welcome address, governor  Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, said  good leadership should be in the front burner and conscience of Nigerians, for the country to achieve prosperity.

  • NIM urges leaders to evolve with change

The Nigerian Institute of Management (NIM) has leaders to be more creative, innovative and pioneering, in order to succeed in modern market. They were also advised to evolve with change in the environment lest their businesses die out.

A fellow of the institute, Comodore Abimbola Ayuba, gave the advice at the 2018 Awards and Fellows Day Luncheon of the Nigerian Institute of Management, held at the City Hall, Lagos yesterday.

In his lecture titled: Leadership and the changing paradigms: Confronting the Dynamics of Change, Ayuba recognised the impact of social media on leadership saying the new millennium witnessed significant increases in internet accessibility, which ignited an enthusiastic uptake of networking services such as Twitter and Facebook.

He said by 2015, there were over 13 million active social media accounts in Nigeria (a 20 per cent increase from the previous year) and by early 2016, Facebook alone had over 15 million active accounts in Nigeria.

  • NIM seeks strong institutions for economic growth

The Nigerian Institute of Management (NIM), a Chartered organisation, has stressed the need to build strong institutions to enhance economic growth.

Its President and Chairman of Council, Prof Olukunle Iyanda, who spoke at the 2018 Distinguished Management Lecture, in Victoria Island, Lagos, yesterday, however said strong institution is not built easily, as it involves a lot of time and efforts.

He said: “Strong and enduring institutions take time, commitment, sincerity, and determination to build. As such they cannot be built overnight or within the tenure or even the life time of a single strongman. For example, it took Lee Kuan Yew more than a decade in office to build lasting strong institutions that contributed tremendously to the transformation of Singapore from a third to a first world country within a generation.

“Strong institutions contribute more to development than strong men. Institutions are immortal while men are mortal. Strong men die while institutions often get stronger with age. Again, institutions are not animate beings, capable of having hidden agenda that contradict declared common objectives. Institutions ensure greater continuity and are less susceptible to individual manipulations and idiosyncrasies. It is not a surprise therefore that practically all developed countries are those governed by institutions and concepts, such as the rule of law rather than of men.”

  • 2019: Agbakoba’s NIM collapses into political party

The Nigerian Intervention Movement (NIM), on Wednesday adopted Alliance for New Nigeria (ANN) as the political party to contest the 2019 general elections.

The political movement announced its adoption of ANN, a relatively new party, at a gathering on Lagos.

NIM is chaired by former National President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mr Olisa Agbakoba with Dr Abdul Jelil-Tafawa Balewa as its co-chair.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that prominent members of NIM and executive members of the ANN were present at the gathering.

They included Debe Odimegwu-Ojukwu, son of late founder of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Chief Odimegwu Ojukwu; Mr Fela Durotoye, and Mrs Elishama Ideh both presidential aspirants under the ANN platform.

Speaking at the gathering, Agbakoba said the decision of NIM to fuse into NIM was borne out of the need to realise its vision for Nigeria.

Represented by NIM’s, Deputy-Director-General, Mallam Nasir Kuta, he said the limited time to the general elections would not permit NIM to register as a political party to pursue its vision.

Agbakoba said the movement settled for ANN because the party shared  in its vision and ideology to build a better Nigeria.

“It is trite to state that the majority of Nigerians have been overwhelmed by the extant quality of politics going on in our dear country as manifested by self-serving politics.

“For us in NIM, the whole essence of political leadership and government is the welfare and wellbeing of the citizenry.

“Therefore, there is need to restore hope to this country. The NIM was formed on 28th November 2017 by a new breed leaders of conscience towards breathing a new life of constitutional democracy and good governance trajectory that will engender a new Nigeria that works for all of us.

“Therefore having come to the reasoned conclusion that political parties are pillars for nurturing popular democracy and nurturing good governance and that political parties that have superintended over the affairs of the country have failed.

“And given the timeline of the general elections, it was our resolve to adopt a fresh and untainted political party with elemental potential of delivering dividends of democracy towards realizing a new Nigeria of our dream”, he said.

Agbakoba added that ANN was chosen after NIM had scanned no fewer than 17 parties that shared its vision.

He said ANN was the only party appropriate for NIM to pursue its PVC driven ballot revolution in 2019.

He said with the adoption of ANN, the political movement would gradually wind up and fuse into the party democratically.

Agbakoba urged Nigerians to join the ANN with the NIM in order to present a credible alternative in 2019.

He also urged citizens to obtain their PVCs as it was the instrument with which to elect their preferred leaders.

Speaking, National Chairman of ANN, Dr Jay Osi-Samuels said the adoption of ANN by NIM was historic.

He said the marriage of the two platforms was borne out of the need to give Nigerians a credible alternative in 2019.

Samuels said the coming of the two platforms meant they were both one and that the structure now belonged to both groups.

He urged Nigerians to trust the platform to deliver the goods in 2019.

“We also urged citizens to obtain their PVCs as that is what they need to realise the country of their dream”, he said. (NAN)

  • NIM holds corporate members’ forum

The Nigerian Institute of Management (NIM) on Tuesday held third edition of its Corporate Members’ Forum in Lagos.

President and Chairman of Council Prof Olukunle Iyanda stressed the need for business owners to imbibe ethical and scrupulous means in interacting with their clients.

According to him, “Businesses daily contend with issues of moral or immoral, right or wrong, fair or unfair, and just or unjust actions or behaviour in their daily decision making relating to planning, organising, motivating, communicating, delegating or resource mobilisation and allocation.

“The focus of the forum is to, among others, assist business owners and managers to uphold ethical practices that are vital to business survival, growth and development,” he said.

The guest speaker, Dr Anthony Ogunbor, who was represented by Dr Agu Onwuzuruoha, said: “Oftentimes when business executives and policy makers are gathered to discuss the challenges in the business environment, presentations are usually structured around poor regulations, paucity of infrastructure, funding limitation, skill gap, insecurity etc.

“We hardly spend time to examine the subject of ethics to ask ourselves if indeed we are doing things the right way. The responsibility for running under the best ethical practices rests with us as individual investors and managers but the benefits for such practices accrue to the society as a whole.”

He said values like integrity, diversity, concern for the environment, transparency, corporate social responsibility, communication channels and prioritisation of employees are some of the imperatives of ethics.

He urged government to introduce ethics into higher education curriculum, establishment of the national commission on ethics, and regular engagement at professional level.

NIM Starts Curriculum Review as New President Emerged

New President and Chairman of Council, Nigerian Institute of Management (Chartered), Olukunle Iyanda is hopeful that the curriculum for the professional examination will be reviewed before his expiration of his two-year tenure by 2019.

Iyanda, a former Director-General of the institute, and ex-Rector of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, was the deputy president until the election.

He was on Thursday decorated as the 21st President of the 56 year old professional examination body alongside new council members in Lagos.

Speaking in the midst of stakeholders and past presidents at the investiture ceremony, Iyanda said the curriculum used for the conducts of the professional examination was long overdue for a review to accommodate in specialised fields of studies.

To actualized the plan Iyanda said an assemblage of professional committee will be constituted without delay as his first call of duty toward repositioning the national body in tandem with other professional bodies.

He said, “As an example, we intend to review our professional examination curriculum, update the content, increase its relevance and rigour, and bring it up to speed with what obtains in similar institutes across the world.

“The implementation of this plan will be swift and immediate as a committee to be made up of seasoned professional management educators and practitioners will be set up soonest to carry out this assignment.”

The Nigerian Management Group was formed in 1961 as the first management institute in Nigeria. The organization was renamed the Nigerian Institute of Management in 1964 and incorporated as a non-profit company.

On 19 June 2003 the National Assembly passed the Nigerian Institute of Management Establishment Act 2003. This gave the NIM the formal authority to regulate the management profession in Nigeria.

  • ‘Landmark Varsity, NIM marriage an inspiration to us’

Vice Chancellor Landmark University Omu Aran Kwara State Prof Aize Obayan, is optimistic that the parnership between the university and the Nigerian Institute of Management (NIM) is a springboard for the actualisation of the university’s visionary path, with respect to providing a strong base for the students and the institution as a whole.

Obayan made this known during the signing of the MoU by the two institutions on ‘Students’ Management Certification’ programme at the institute’s premises located at Idowu Taylor VI Lagos.

“We want to say that very soon Landmark University will become the hub of university and management excellence when higher education is mentioned globally,” Prof Obayan boasted.

Obayan said the university reposed  confidence in NIM as a professional body of excellence, adding that the relationship would afford Landmark undergraduates to acquire  professional management training before graduation.

According to her, the Living Faith Church Worldwide which is the proprietor of Landmark University encourages her younger students to build capacity in line with global best practices, adding that NIM is providing a solid foundation along this line.

Reacting on the development, NIM Registrar/Chief Executive Mr Tony Fadaka, stated that the Students’ Management Scheme is one of the routes to becoming a member of the institute. It was conceived as a means of giving undergraduate students the opportunity of imbibing the ideals and values of professional management as well as practising and demonstrating management professionalism at the early state of their career development, he added.

Fadaka said the Landmark’s disposition to the MoU, has further confirmed its commitment to building a culture of management professionalism amongst its students. The NIM boss therefore assured that the partnership would open up the university to the institute’s network of international organisations with increased benefits.

Barely two months ago, the university signed an MoU with the Association of Chattered Certified Accountants (ACCA). It also gained full professional accreditation status from Institute of Chatered Accountant of Nigeria (ICAN) and Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), respectively. Similarly, the Computer Professional Registration Council of Nigeria (CPN) conferred full accreditation status on the Computer Science programme of the university.
