NIPOST to deepen digital inclusion with donations of devices from KOICA

The Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) would deepen its delivery of digital inclusion and promote service delivery across all economic sectors for enhanced Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

The Postmaster General of the Federation and Chief Executive Officer of NIPOST, Tola Odeyemi, gave the assurance in Abuja shortly after she received equipment donations from the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA).

The Korea Agency made a donation of 350 NIMC-certified Android National Identification Number (NIN) enrolment devices to enhance the capacity of NIPOST and ensure that its services are spread to underserved communities and areas with difficult terrains in the country.

Odeyemi, who received the KOICA team led by the Country Director, Mr. Eunsub Kim, at the NIPOST Corporate Headquarters, Abuja, praised KOICA for its commitment to effective and efficient digital services in Nigeria.

She described the intervention as a strategic investment in Nigeria’s digital future, noting that the devices would significantly enhance NIPOST’s capacity to deliver accessible and inclusive NIN registration services nationwide—particularly in underserved and hard-to-reach communities.

The NIPOST boss said the gesture aligned with the Federal Government’s mandate to provide nationwide access to essential public services and other ventures that would improve the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

She said NIPOST’s extensive national footprint positioned the organization as a critical enabler of inclusive digital identity enrollment and a key contributor to Nigeria’s broader digital transformation agenda.

The KOICA Country Director commended NIPOST for its strategic contributions to National Digital development, stating that the devices were provided under KOICA’s ongoing projects.

Kim, who listed the project as “Building Foundations Towards Digital Governance in Nigeria,” disclosed that the devices came fully equipped with pre-installed enrolment Software Licenses, alongside training and delivery support to ensure smooth deployment and effective utilization.

Mr. Kim stated that KOICA remains committed to supporting Nigeria’s Digital Governance efforts and ensuring that citizens across the country have easier access to essential identity services.

He said the intervention forms part of a four-year initiative (2022–2026) aimed at achieving key Digital Governance milestones, including the update of Nigeria’s e-Government Master Plan to Version 2.0, development of enterprise architecture frameworks for Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), digital capacity building at National and Sub-national levels, and the creation of Nigeria’s first single-window Government Service Portal (GSP).

He noted that as the forthcoming GSP will rely heavily on NIN authentication, NIPOST’s enhanced enrolment capacity places it in a strategic position to support citizens in accessing future digital public services.

Consequently, the KOICA Country Director requested NIPOST’s collaboration in onboarding at least one NIPOST digital service onto the GSP and encouraged the designation of a focal person to liaise closely with Galaxy Backbone Limited to ensure seamless coordination.

KOICA, the Grant Aid Agency of the Government of the Republic of Korea, has been a longstanding development partner to Nigeria since 2008, supporting initiatives in e-government, governance reforms, digital capacity building, and ICT infrastructure development across the country.

The donation of the 350 NIN enrolment devices further reinforced NIPOST’s expanding role in Nigeria’s Digital identity ecosystem and underscored its commitment to improving citizens’ access to convenient, efficient, and inclusive NIN registration services nationwide.

‘NIPOST paystack portal to eliminate postal inefficiencies’

The Federal Government has launched the Nigeria Postal Service, NIPOST, paystack customs duty payment portal for parcels coming into the country from across the world.

The Minister of Communications, Innovations and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani launched the portal in his office in Abuja yesterday. He was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr Rafiu Adeladan.

The Minister said the digitalised payment portal would reduce human-to-human contacts, eliminate delays, and inefficiencies within the period of transactions based on global standards and best practices.

He said the launch represented a solution that is at the heart of Mr. President’s priorities for Nigeria’s digital economy, and Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI).

He said: “For years, too many Nigerians importing small parcels or business goods have faced the same frustrations — hidden customs charges revealed only at pickup, long queues at post offices, and endless social-media complaints about inefficiency.

“These are not just customer-service problems, they are barriers to trade, to e-commerce, and to the daily hustle of small businesses trying to compete in a global economy. When citizens lose time and money navigating inefficient systems, we all lose value as a nation.”

He however expressed optimism that with the launch by NIPOST, the narratives would changed, as citizens would get value from NIPOST services, while the government would raise its revenue profile from the solutions.

The Minister who praised NIPOST for the digital solution said NIPOST together with the private sector have “built an ecosystem that reduces friction, restores trust, and turns government into a platform for innovation. This is indeed a milestone to a digitally-enabled Nigeria.”

The Postmaster General of the Federation, Engr Tola Odeyemi in her remarks said the solution would enable government track revenues coming from the sector in a transparent manner, stressing that NIPOST launched the product to eliminate perceived inefficiencies, delays and other bureaucratic bottlenecks within the ecosystem.

Engr Odeyemi said:” Today, we are witnessing a new chapter in NIPOST’s transformation story; one that blends our legacy of public service with the power of technology, fintech, and innovation.

“For decades, NIPOST has connected Nigerians through letters, parcels, and logistics. But in this new era of digital trade and e-commerce, connection means more than delivery, it means convenience, transparency, and trust. And that is exactly what this new collaboration represents.”

She said with the new technology and partnership with Paystack, Messenger, and Sendbox, NIPOST was stepping boldly into a new era of public service excellence, fintech integration, and trade facilitation.

“Together, we are creating a seamless system for international inbound items, one that simplifies customs payments, enables online transactions, and delivers parcels directly to your doorsteps. We are solving a long-standing customer pain point: one that has been voiced repeatedly: on social media, in post offices and through customer feedback”, Engr Odeyemi said.

NIPOST moves to enforce stamping protocols, sensitises Southeast stakeholders

The Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) has commenced an extensive sensitisation campaign across the Southeast on the enforcement of stamp denotation protocols, aimed at authenticating transactions and giving them legal validity in line with federal government directives.

Speaking at a stakeholders’ sensitisation programme on stamping protocols held in Enugu on Wednesday, NIPOST officials and licensed agents urged businesses, institutions, and individuals to ensure that all transactions from ₦1,000 and above are properly denoted with NIPOST-approved stamps.

Representing the Postmaster General of the Federation, the Director of Retail Services and Chairman, Stamp Denotation Committee, Mr. Samuel Oguntayo, explained that stamp denotation serves as an official means of validating receipts and documents, making them legally enforceable in court.

“The law recognises the fact that stamps produced by NIPOST—whether physical or electronic—can be used to denote duty on a transaction. These stamps authenticate and validate transactions, giving them legal backing,” Oguntayo said.

He clarified that stamp denotation is distinct from stamp duty, noting that while stamp duty involves a percentage charge on transactions, stamp denotation is a flat ₦50 fee that serves as proof of authenticity and legality.

Oguntayo added that the new tax law, which comes into effect in January, designates NIPOST as an advisory body to the Joint Tax Board on the modalities for duty denotation.

“Every receipt or document issued in acknowledgment of money transactions from ₦1,000 and above should be denoted with the ₦50 stamp. This ensures the document is legally valid and admissible in court,” he said.

According to him, the initiative helps to detect and prevent fraudulent transactions, as every stamp has unique security features that make forgery or backdating easily traceable.

“We have had instances where stamps on receipts helped to determine the genuineness of such receipts. If someone issues a receipt dated 1970 with a 2025 stamp, it is clear evidence of fraud,” Oguntayo added.

Also speaking, Mr. Chidi Sydney Ndu, Chief Executive Officer of P.C. Ndu Nigeria Limited, the NIPOST-appointed vendor for electronic and adhesive stamps in the Southeast and Plateau State, said the sensitisation exercise was part of efforts to promote public understanding of stamping protocols.

“We are in Enugu to enlighten stakeholders on stamp denotation and authentication. Many people confuse it with stamp duty, but they are not the same. Stamp denotation is fixed at ₦50, and it authenticates that a transaction was carried out on a particular date and is legally valid,” Ndu explained.

He said that the initiative aligns with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda aimed at protecting Nigerians in their financial dealings, particularly in property and business transactions.

“Many land and property disputes arise because of document authenticity. With stamp denotation, you can easily confirm the genuine document and the exact date of the transaction,” he noted.

Ndu likened the importance of stamp denotation to vehicle licensing, stressing that many people ignore its necessity until disputes or investigations arise.

“You may carry out transactions for years without issues, but when a problem comes—like a legal dispute—you will realise the importance of having your documents properly denoted. Even your tax relief applications next year will depend on this denotation,” he said.

Both NIPOST and its partners assured participants that measures were in place to make the stamps easily accessible across the region, including through approved retailers and electronic platforms.

The sensitisation programme, which attracted representatives from government agencies, private businesses, and financial institutions, is part of NIPOST’s nationwide campaign to standardise and enforce stamp usage in all qualifying transactions.

NIPOST marks World Post Day in Enugu, reaffirms commitment to service delivery

The Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) on Thursday joined the rest of the world to mark the 2025 World Post Day with a colourful celebration in Enugu.

The service also reaffirmed its commitment to connecting communities and enhancing service delivery across Nigeria.

The event, which featured a march by postal workers from Frie Service to New Haven, Ogui Road and other parts of the Enugu metropolis, brought together postal officials, partners, and members of the public.

Speaking during the ceremony, the Enugu State Postal Manager, Dr. Chris Uzoma Ashiedu, said this year’s theme, “#PostForPeople: Local Service, Global Reach,” underscores the post’s role in linking local communities to the global network of communication and commerce.

Ashiedu explained that World Post Day, celebrated annually on October 9, commemorates the founding of the Universal Postal Union (UPU), the United Nations agency that regulates postal operations worldwide.

He said the celebration serves as a reminder of the post’s contributions to social and economic development, while recognizing the dedication of postal workers who keep the network running efficiently.

Highlighting recent achievements under the Postmaster-General, Ms. Tola Odeyemi, Ashiedu noted that NIPOST had exceeded ₦10 billion in revenue, digitalized operations to improve service delivery, and signed partnerships with organizations such as SMEDAN to reduce logistics costs and support small businesses.

He assured that NIPOST would continue to innovate and expand its services — from mail and courier delivery to financial services and the National Addressing System — to better serve Nigerians.

“NIPOST remains committed to bridging geographical divides and fostering global unity through efficient postal services,” Ashiedu said.

NIPOST launches agriculture programme to reduce post-harvest losses

The Postmaster General of the Federation/CEO of the Nigerian Postal Service, Tola Odeyemi, said on Wednesday that NIPOST launched its integrated logistics and storage backbone Agriculture programme to reduce post-harvest losses by farmers in the country.

Odeyemi, who put post-harvest losses at 40 percent of agricultural produce across the country, said the programme would benefit over one million small-holding farmers and 3,000 Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Nigeria.

According to the NIPOST Chief Executive, the agriculture programme would leverage NIPOST’s existing infrastructures in all the 774 local government councils to establish modular storage hubs, digital traceable tools, and corridor-based fleet operations to move agricultural produce from farms to storage facilities.

Odeyemi made the remarks during the celebrations of the 2025 World Post Day and the unveiling of “the Face of NIPOST 2025” initiative at the headquarters of the agency in Abuja.

She said the theme of this year’s celebration, “Post for people: local Service, global reach,” was deliberately chosen to explain the trajectory of NIPOST since it joined the other 193 member countries of the Universal Postal Union, UPU.

The NIPOST boss said the Agriculture programme known as NIPOST Agro-Infrastructure and Logistics Initiative (NAILI) was a flagship programme designed to align with the federal government programme to boost food security in the country.

Odeyemi said NIPOST is being recalibrated to provide effective and efficient logistics services across the World, saying “we are here to connect people, businesses, and communities through a robust, integrated network of postal and logistics services.”

“We are committed to driving socio-economic development by ensuring that every Nigerian, regardless of location, has access to reliable and affordable postal services and a channel to access governmental services”, Odeyemi said.

She said the National Addressing System was being developed in collaboration with the National Population Commission (NPC) and other technical partners to replace the analogue numeric postcode with a digital postcode to facilitate efficient mail delivery, enhance government services accessibility, and emergency services.

Odeyemi said, “The new digital postcode is Nigeria’s new alphanumeric code system identifying specific geographic entities that will enhance accuracy in geographical entity identification and is integrated into a digital map and GIS, acting as the backbone for urban planning and Nigeria’s digital economy.

“This digital postcode, which will eventually be the technology on which the national addressing system will be built, will capture every part of Nigeria using a systematic framework for alpha-numeric characters from state, LGA, postcode districts, postcode areas, and postcode units.”

Speaking on NIPOST’s collaboration with the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency (SMEDAN), Odeyemi said NIPOST introduced a 15 percent logistics discount for all registered MSMEs to benefit about 20,000 members as a way of contributing to the Gross Domestic Product of the country.

She announced that the 2025 World Post Day letter writing competition, which received over 1000 entries, was won by Adeyemo Jedidiah and Adewunmi Princess Boluwatigba of Methodist Girls High School, SaboYaba, Lagos State, and Okuwoli Elizabeth of ST. Jude’s Private Secondary School, Festac Town, Lagos.

She added that the three overall national winners won the cash prizes of One Hundred Thousand Naira (N100,000), Seventy-five Thousand Naira(N75,000), and Fifty Thousand Naira(N50,000) respectively.

    • ‘Media reports false’

The Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) has reaffirmed its commitment to blocking any type of illicit transportation of drugs through courier services or operators.

NIPOST maintained that to cement its commitment, it entered into a partnership with the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), and the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS), among other security agencies. The postal service dismissed reports by an online publication that there had been a surge in drug trafficking through the courier service.

NIPOST’s Director of Corporate Communications of NIPOST, Mr. Franklin Alao, described the report as false and misleading. M

Alao said at no time did NIPOST engage, confirm or endorse such publication.

“This is categorically false. At no point has NIPOST made such a statement or associated these activities with the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” he said in a statement yesterday in Abuja.

Alao added: “While we respect the role of the media in promoting accountability, the dissemination of sensational and inaccurate information, particularly in matters of national security,-risks eroding public trust and undermining the collaborative work being done to sanitise the courier and logistics sector.

“As the regulator of Nigeria’s courier industry, NIPOST is leading a coordinated effort to ensure compliance, surveillance, and enforcement across the sector.”

The statement also said NIPOST is currently running stricter licensing and compliance audits to weed out illegal and unauthorised operators.

“We are currently revalidating courier operator licenses, enforcing mandatory Know-Your-Customer (KYC) protocols, and conducting compliance audits across licensed operators.
