  • NIPR summit for spokespersons

    NIPR summit for spokespersons

The Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) will organise a national spokespersons summit in its quest to reinvent the position and discourage violent communication.

Its President, Dr Ike Neliaku, said this at a meeting for the media and council members in Abuja.

Neliaku said the summit, which holds between March 25 and 28 at the International Conference Centre (ICC), Abuja, would change the narrative on nation building and development.

“If you don’t change your narrative, you cannot change the society; societies are built on narratives and that’s why those that have bad mouth culture and violent communicators will create problem from what they say.

“We want to bring spokespersons in Nigeria to seat together including those who have been successful across the world to come and share thoughts with us on how to reinvent our spokespersons to serve the nation and their profession.

“Then later in April, we will have our annual Public Relations (PR) conference for a week in Abeokuta, Ogun State, to look at the importance of PR in an economy of nationhood.

“We are bringing together all the practitioners within and those from outside Nigeria to look at how to rebuild our economy,” Neliaku said.

According to him, efforts have been geared towards professionalism in Public Relations following plans to establish NIPR University in Abuja.

He said: “We discovered that people graduate as Mass Communication students, and desire to be PR practitioners but there is no school where they could go for professionalism.

“The kind of thing you have in legal practice after you have finished your degree programme, you go to the Nigerian Law School to professionalise and become a lawyer.

“So, we are establishing that school. The education advisory board, chaired by the Vice President of NIPR, is already concluding on that, so we are going to unveil it.

“The essence is that PR is not just a profession for civil servants, it is a profession that empowers, and it is important to the growth of any economy whether personal economy, family economy, organisation economy or national economy.’’

“So, we are designing it to bring practitioners in the field, who will be the faculty, to come and teach others based on the successes they had recorded in PR practice, so, it is about having the practical knowledge,” Neliaku added.

He added that the institute would establish a PR Forum for young Nigerians to be fully integrated into the PR profession through the mentorship of college of fellows.

“There are several young people who are doing great things.

“We now want to create a forum for them so that they can be fully integrated and putting together a college of fellows that will become the mentorship platform for these young people.

“One of the things we said when we were elected was that we will build PR for development because it has an essential role to play in the development of a nation.

“As a result of that, we are preparing this from that perspective to ensure that at the end of the day, that role is effectively played,” he added.

The Director-General of Voice of Nigeria, Jibrin Ndace, who graced the occasion, commended the leadership of NIPR for the efforts at sanitising the institute.

Ndace noted that PR should not be an all comers profession.

“If you’re not a member of NIPR, then you don’t have business doing PR job. We must not leave the space for those who does not mean well for the country to spread fake news and disinformation about our country.

“We need to reposition the institute and we shouldn’t relate to people as if we are helpless.

“If you want people to relate with you even as an individual, you need to position yourself; if you want people to respect NIPR, then, it should be repositioned.

“I will like to advice our colleagues (journalists) that we shouldn’t wait until we are close to retirement on this career before we join NIPR.

“Every journalist should be a member of NIPR from day one because it positions you as a person and creates opportunity for you as an individual.

“And every chapter of NIPR should create a business opportunity for members in whatever we do,” Ndace said.

NIPR President inaugurates National Spokespersons Award committees

The President of the Nigeria Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), Dr. Ike Neliaku, has inaugurated two committees on the first edition of the Nigeria National Spokespersons’ Awards (NNSA) scheduled for March 2024.

This is part of the historic deal with the Image Merchants Promotion Limited (IMPR) – publishers of PRNigeria, Economic Confidential, Spokespersons’ Digest and other titles – for the transition of the annual Spokespersons’ Communication Awards (SCA) into NNSA.

Speaking as Chief Host of the 5th Security and Emergency Management Awards (SAEMA) and 3rd SCA in Abuja on December 7, Neliaku stressed the importance of celebrating PR practitioners and spokespersons who promote and protect the image of their institutions as well as Nigeria’s.

Appreciating the IMPR for honouring outstanding PR professionals, he said the effort led the NIPR to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to expand the award and make it national. Both organisations will host the first National Spokespersons Summit and Workshop, under the NNSA, from 25th-28th of March, 2024.

“We recognise the importance of spokespersons in nation building; we insist that speaking and talking may not necessarily be communication. We decided to take the necessary expertise required to groom a generation of spokespersons that would not just speak for organisations, but speak for Nigeria,” Neliaku added.

Commenting on the country’s development, the NIPR President announced that the institute is hosting next year’s summit to support the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation in fulfilling its mandate.

“The Minister, Mohammed Idris Malagi, a fellow of NIPR, values and understands what it is to communicate; communication is an essential part of his information management. He has used such knowledge and tactical PR skills to manage information and communication in the last few months.

“This helped to douse tension in the wake of the COP28 over-bloated delegate saga. He simply issued a statement categorising the number of representation and where these representations came from. That proactive action put a stop to the fake news,” Neliaku said.

The NNSA coordinating team include Segun McMedal, former Lagos NIPR Chairman (Chair); Comptroller Joseph Attah, NIPR Fellow; Mohammed Dahiru Lawal, Head of Fact-check and Investigation, PRNigeria; Saad Shuaib, Business Manager, PRNigeria; Mrs. Ekalome Udo; Mr. Stanley Ogadigwu (Secretary).

The jurist committee will be chaired by Professor Mabel Aworihoma. Prof. Anthony Igwefe, Dr Matins Akinam, Dr. Saudat Abdulbaki, Mr. Kabir Abdulsalam and Mr. Ishola Ayodele will serve as members. The Secretary is Mr. Abdulrahman Abdulraheem, Managing Editor of PRNigeria.

The Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) has signed a historic deal with the Image Merchants Promotion Limited (IMPR) – publishers of PRNigeria, Spokespersons’ Digest and Economic Confidential – for the hosting of the annual Spokespersons’ Communications Awards (SCA).

The epoch-making Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by NIPR President, Dr Ike Neliaku and Managing Director of IMPR, Mallam Yushau Shuaib at the institute in Abuja.

The awards will be an evolution of the SCA which the IMPR has been organising for three years. This year’s event will be held on December 7, the final edition as presently constituted. It will be succeeded by the new format to be unveiled in March 2024, in line with the pact.

The NIPR will “Endorse the Spokespersons Awards as the chief host; issue notifications to members in chapters and relevant stakeholders; recognize the award as part of its annual National Spokespersons Summit; provide the venue for the award ceremony; nominate the Chairman and three members of the seven-member jury.”

On its part, the IMPR will “Organise and finance the awards; provide trophies; handle souvenirs, logistics, publicity and media relations; create and manage the website; cater for the secretariat and receive all entries; nominate the secretary and two other members of the seven-member jury.”

In his remark, Dr Neliaku noted that the collaboration is history in the making as well as the reawakening of a new dawn for the practice of PR in Nigeria.

“This is the third in the series of MoUs with credible organisations led by NIPR practitioners; those contributing their quota to the service of the Institute, adding value to nation building. We are here to sign with our own Mallam Yushau Shuaib and his team from IMPR, who have accepted for us to work together to expand the Awards his organisation have been running for years.

“NIPR is coming with the National Spokespersons Summit, a flagship programme aimed at having a solid foundation of spokespersons in Nigeria. It cuts across the private and public sector and civil society at local, state and federal levels. This is why we are here today; this is the first component of the action we are going to talk about in March next year.”

The CEO of IMPR, Mr. Shuaib noted that the spokespersons’ awards would recognise accomplishments, motivate others to strive for excellence, enhance visibility and add legitimacy to the reputation of recipients by demonstrating superiority, expertise and uniqueness.

“It will also create networking opportunities, business relationships, improve employees’ performance and boost their morale. We initiated this idea in 2018 with the former NIPR President, Mallam Mukhtar Sirajo, who commended our various exploits on the international scene. We are glad that the new leadership under Dr Neliaku has concretised with this solid agreement,” he added.

Others at the signing ceremony included NIPR Vice President, Prof Emmanuel Dandaura; Registrar, Uzoma Onyegbadue; ex-Army spokesman, Brig Gen Sani Usman Kukasheka (rtd), and ex-Adamawa State Commissioner for Information, Alhaji Ahmad Ibrahim Sajoh.

  • NIPR summit and the ‘threat’ of Artificial Intelligence in PR

NIPR summit and the ‘threat’ of Artificial Intelligence in PR

    • By Abdul Ozumi

Communication scholars and public relations practitioners in Nigeria have declared that Artificial Intelligence (AI) cannot replace human intelligence in whatever guise. At the Annual General Meeting and Public Lecture of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), Kano Chapter, the experts opined AI is designed to replace manual work effectively and quickly, and cannot override the need for human input in the workspace.

In his presentation on “Artificial Intelligence and Spin Doctoring in Public Relations Practice in Nigeria”, the guest speaker, Professor Abdalla Uba Adamu, questioned the hype around AI. He noted that even though the technology will aid human efforts in all endeavours, including PR practice and data collection, it is impossible for it to replace human instinct, interactivity and creativity.

The guest speaker stated that AI cannot have superiority over human abilities, since computers could have remain exactly the same way in a hundred years without human inputs. The human element, he stressed, is not easily replaceable by technology because effective PR strategies require the expertise and experience of skilled professionals.

Admitting AI has become an essential part of the business landscape as the technology presents new opportunities for growth and development, Adamu, who holds professorships in Science Education, and Media and Cultural Communication, contended: “AI is a tool, not a human, and lacks the emotions needed when it comes to certain parts of the business.”

Managing Director of Image Merchants Promotion (IMPR), Yushau Shuaib agreed that it is impossible for AI to replace human intelligence, saying the technology can only enhance the work of professionals in the areas of audience targeting, content generation, media engagement, online reputation management and crisis management.

“AI is nothing new; search engines, location search tools, spell checkers, reverse image apps, computer games, among other tools, share the same feature. We can’t deny the fact that AI saves time, increases efficiency, improves accuracy and enhances competitive advantages. It merely augments human intelligence but can never replace creativity, human interactions and natural instinct; one cannot fall in love with a robot in the real sense,” Shuaib averred.

President of NIPR, Dr. Ike Neliaku, who said humans are immensely valuable in public relations because the need for creativity in interactions cannot be replaced by AI, commended the NIPR Chapter in Kano and a Governing Council member Dr. Sule Yau Sule for facilitating the lecture on contemporary issues.

In his remarks, Kano Commissioner of information, Alhaji Baba Dantiye advised practitioners to be up to date with modern tools for communication. The senior government official called on NIPR to organise more capacity building programmes on artificial intelligence for spokespersons and PR experts.

After inaugurating the newly elected leadership of NIPR in Kano, Dr. Neliaku embarked on a facility tour of IMPR’s PRNigeria Centre which owns PRNigeria, Economic Confidential, Spokespersons’ Digest and other titles. The delegation inspected the Digital Communication Room, Conference Office, Research and Fact-Checking desks.

Mr. Shuaib said most of the staff are certified public relations practitioners with diverse skills in journalism, social media, strategic communication and fact-checking using artificial intelligence. IMPR provides mentorship programmes for undergraduate and postgraduate students through internship placements in its Abuja and Kano offices.

The publisher said having realised the importance of AI in PR, the firm deployed the technology for audience targeting, content generation, media engagement, perception index, online reputation management and sentiment analysis in crisis communication. Some of the tech tools are deployed for predictive analytics, media monitoring, budgeting, social media management, video production and speech-to-text contents.

Dr. Neliaku offered to partner with IMPR, recalling he was recently briefed by NIPR Vice President, Professor Emma Dandaura on the areas of collaboration. He said: “As we are planning the hosting of the national spokespersons’ workshop, we have assigned Dr. Sule Yau Sule, a veteran spokesperson to governors, ministers and senators, to chair the Planning Committee.

“On the request of IMPR for partnership on its annual Spokespersons’ Communication Awards, we hope the forthcoming National Spokespersons Summit that has been approved by the Minister of Information and National Orientation will also be a better platform to showcase and celebrate outstanding public relations campaigns by organisations and individuals.

“With what I have seen at the NIPR Conference in Kano, our proposed workshop will also focused on various ways in which artificial intelligence can be used in PR practice, the technological tools, the potential risks and benefits, the ethical considerations and likely case studies so that participants can stay up to date with the latest development.

“Let me congratulate Mallam Shuaib, a multi-talented PR practitioner whom I have known for more than two decades, for mentoring young journalists and communicators. The IMPR has been one of our ambassadors, using its centres in Abuja and Kano to teach young communicators on stakeholder engagement, entrepreneurship and digital economy. When I came into office, I insisted we must relate well with our chapters and ensure that PR practitioners succeed.”

The highlight of the events were the awards of honour by NIPR in Kano to Prof. Adamu and Mr. Shuaib, as well as the presentation of books published by PRNigeria staff to Dr. Neliaku, his immediate predecessor Mallam Mukhtar Sirajo, and a member of the institute’s Governing Council, Mr. Bashir Adamu Chedi.

  • NIPR urges post-election national cohesion

The Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) yesterday sought an olive branch and unity among the different political actors.

This followed the hatred and disunity this year’s general elections have generated among Nigerians.

The institute said there is a need to draw the attention of political actors to the dangers of politics of bitterness and hatred that keep undermining the unity, integrity and corporate existence of the country.

Its President and Chairman of Council, Mallam Mukhtar Sirajo, stated this while addressing reporters in Abuja, the nation’s capital, ahead of the institute’s annual general meeting (AGM) on “National Cohesion”.

He said: “Nigeria is a unique and blessed country; it remains one of the most endowed nations on earth in human and natural resources. Unfortunately, this same entity that once lived in unity and harmony, fought battles to keep other nations together in peace, is now fast becoming a colony of hostility, aggression and den of terror.

“The envy of other nations is now confronted with a strange future of hatred, intolerance and disaffection, tending towards the brink of collapse. This would cause patriotic minds to ask: what went wrong? What has happened to our once cherished culture of unity?”

Sirajo urged the citizenry to take national unity more seriously, given the key positions it occupies in meeting the expectations of the people and promoting national development.

According to him, no entity grows or develops in disunity.

Sirajo insisted on the efficacy of peace in national coexistence, saying: “Let’s go back to our unique culture of love for one another, strong bond of brotherhood that knows no tribe or religion, habit of hospitality that does not emphasize state of origin, and let’s embrace tolerance as an option for co-existence.”

On the AGM, the NIPR president said nation-building is a core mandate of the institute, which was why it decided to lead the discourse on national cohesion.

He said the institute had selected Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah as keynote speaker and Vice-President Yemi Osibanjo the special guest of honour.

  • I do not have $1.2bn in any account – Lai Mohammed

I do not have $1.2bn in any account – Lai Mohammed

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed says the report that he has 1.2 billion dollars (about N400 billion) in his imaginary bank account is “fake and vicious’’.

The minister stated this on Thursday in Ilorin at the Annual National Conference and General Meeting of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) with the theme; “Communicating Values for Development and Sustainability’’.

The minister said that the report was invented by opposition and naysayers to malign him and the government, adding that the alleged fund is about the budget of his ministry for 25 years.

“How else can you explain that people will believe and circulate a fake report that the Minister of Information and Culture that is yours truly has 1.2 billion dollars in his imaginary bank account?

“Let’s examine this for a moment. 1.2 billion dollars is about N400 billion.

“The entire yearly budget of the Ministry of Information and Culture, where I preside, is under 15 billion Naira and these include salaries, overhead and capital projects.

“Assuming, without conceding that the Minister somehow manages to transfer the entire budget into his personal account, it will take 25 years for him to amass N400 billion.

“Yet, this disinformation was lapped up by the public, he said.

The minister said that similar imaginary huge sums of money had been credited to other ministers.

He condemned the ugly trend by opposition, who were inventing the fake and malicious stories using bloggers and some online media to malign government officials.

According to him, the intention of the perpetrators and carriers of the reports are to distract the government to lose focus, but it will not fall to their antics.

The minister said that Public Relations gave him the first break in life being the profession he practiced after his graduation for over 40 years.

Mohammed, a Fellow of the Institute said that the theme of the conference was apt and called on NIPR members to be proactive in the discharge of their duties.

“You must neither be intimidated, cowed nor be overwhelmed by the cynics, you must set your own agenda and daily review such with a view to improving on them.

“You must never lose touch with your traditional constituents. You must understand the tactics of the opposition, which is ambush and irrational,’’ he said.

    The minister specifically tasked

government information managers to equip themselves with qualities such as integrity, courage, abnormal capacity for hard work, ingenuity resourcefulness and ability to think out of the box.

The President and Chairman Governing Council of NIPR, Dr Rotimi Oladele said the conference was to deliberate on how the profession could be used to promote communication values for development.

He underscored the need for practitioners to showcase national values and present them to global market.

Oladele commended the minister for the support given to the Institute and for creating time to attend the event.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the minister also inaugurated a new Governing Council for the Institute to run for two years under the leadership of Oladele.

Some of the members of the Council are, former Defence Spokesperson, retired Gen. Chris Olukolade, former Director of Press and Protocol in the Ministry of Information and Culture, Mr Peter Dama and his successor, Mr Timothy Oyedeji.

Others are Mr Wale Adeniyi of Nigeria Customs Service, Alhaji Sule Yau a former Chief Press Secretary to Kano State Government and Alhaja Bola Osifeso.

NAN also reports that 10 members of NIPR were inducted to Fellowship of the Institute.
