Insecurity: NMA threatens strike in Edo

The Nigeria Medical Association, Edo State Branch, has threatened to embark on an indefinite strike action beginning from Saturday, January 10th, 2026 over the kidnapping of two medical doctors, Dr. Abu Babatunde and Dr. Stephen Osamaye.

Dr. Babatunde works at the Edo State University Teaching Hospital, Auchi while Dr. Osamaye works at the Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital, Irrua.

They were abducted separately on January 1st and January 2nd 2026.

A statement by Chairman of Edo NMA, Dr. Eustace Oseghale, said the kidnappings raised concerns about healthcare professionals’ safety in Edo State as well as undermining healthcare delivery.

The Edo NMA demanded mmediate release of the Doctor’s, enhanced security protocols for Edo State residents and regular engagement between NMA Edo and the Edo State Government on security concerns.

Dr. Oseghale said Doctors would withdraw services statewide if the demands were not met.

“A safe working environment is crucial for healthcare providers. We’ll continue to withhold services until our demands are met and colleagues are safe.

“We urge a swift resolution and the safe return of our colleagues. Security operatives should take this seriously, as they’ll be held responsible for consequences of our action.”

Strike: Why doctors cannot disrupt health services in Enugu – NMA

The Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) says it cannot disrupt health services in Enugu State, following the strike by the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) because of their increased renumeration.

The association also hailed Gov. Peter Mbah for motivating healthcare workers in the state with improved remuneration.

The Chairman, NMA, Enugu State, Dr Sunday Okafor, disclosed this during a World Press Conference on 2025 Physicians’ Week and Maiden Enugu South-East Regional Health Summit in Enugu, on Monday.

According to Okafor, doctors in the state, under Mbah, are one of the best paid healthcare workers in the country, in terms of remuneration for medical personnel.

He said that health workers owed gratitude to the governor, whose vision and love to improve efficiency across the public health system and public service, had continued to be an enigma to everyone.

He, therefore, called on the Federal Government and other governors to emulate Mbah to prioritise the welfare of health workers for improved service delivery and prevent frequent strikes by NARD members.

“It is on record that in the country, Enugu healthcare personnel are the highest paid and, as a parent body, we cannot disrupt health services in those areas where the governor is actually doing well.

“We allowed resident doctors in the federal hospitals in the state to embark on strike because Mbah is motivating state health workers.

“The issue of the strike is poor renumeration and welfare, so we don’t have issues with the Enugu State Government, in terms of remuneration and welfare,” Okafor said.

He emphasised the need for the Federal Government to resolve the issue with resident doctors so they could attend to their teeming patients.

He said that shutting down the healthcare system would disrupt social services and make patients to suffer.

He also commended Mbah for investing in healthcare infrastructure by improving primary, secondary and tertiary hospitals in the state.

“The governor is building Type two primary health centres across 260

electoral wards in Enugu State and each of them is actually being operationalised.

“NMA Enugu State has continued to partner with the government because when you see the vision of the leader, you complement his efforts,” he said.

Speaking on the theme, “Healthcare as a Value Chain – Building Efficiency from Policy to Patients” for the physicians’ week, Okafor called for patient-centred policies to address health inequalities.

“So we have decided for the first time in our history to have

a regional health summit, where the various heads of our health systems in the South-East will say what they were able to do to improve the healthcare system,” he said.

    • …unveils nationwide mental health support for inmates

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), in collaboration with Diatom Impact and Platform Capital, has donated reusable sanitary pads to all female inmates across Nigeria’s correctional facilities and pledged weekly psychiatric and psychological care for inmates nationwide.

The association said the initiative became necessary because inmates’ health should not be neglected, as they remain part of society and will eventually reintegrate into it.

It also emphasized that the well-being of caregivers and other Nigeria Correctional Service (NCS) personnel must not be overlooked, since they need to stay healthy to provide adequate care for the inmates.

The 1st Vice President of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Dr. Oluwatosin Olowojebutu, spoke in Abuja on Wednesday when he led a delegation of the association to the office of the NCS Controller, Sylvester Nwakuche, who described the gesture as an act of compassion and partnership that restores dignity to persons in custody.

The group donated 4,000 packs of reusable sanitary pads to about 1,500 female inmates across correctional facilities nationwide and launched a weekly psychiatric and psychological care programme for inmates across the country.

Olowojebutu said the gesture reaffirmed the association’s commitment to supporting the Correctional Service through sustained healthcare delivery, mental health support, and hygiene interventions across all facilities.

He said the new plan would ensure that doctors visit each correctional centre at least once a week to attend to inmates and staff, ending years of irregular medical access caused by funding challenges.

“In the past, doctors had to travel up to 75 kilometers to reach some facilities without support. With this incentive provided by Dr Akindele, doctors now have transport and stipends to sustain the visits,” he explained.

According to Olowojebutu, the partnership marks a turning point in ensuring regular, structured healthcare delivery within correctional institutions.

“It’s sustainable now because there’s a funding component attached, and doctors are happy to give their time,” he said.

A member of the delegation, Dr. Akintoye Akindele, the Chairman of Diatom Impact and Platform Capital, who is funding the weekly outreach logistics, said the initiative represents the enduring spirit of compassion and unity that binds Nigerians.

“Yes, there are challenges in the community, and all of us have been victims in one way or another. But this is our country; it is our home. And if it’s our home, we must take care of it,” he said.

The philanthropist praised the leadership of the Correctional Service for transforming facilities into centres of learning and rehabilitation.

“You see a regulator that is human, empathetic, and visionary. You see an association of doctors whose core is compassion. Why won’t we support that? Everyone deserves dignity, hope, and a chance at life,” he said.

Akindele urged Nigerians to focus on positive developments that show progress, not just failures, saying, “There is greatness happening in Nigeria in every corner. Let’s tap into it and stop amplifying only the negatives. Let’s tell stories that move the nation forward”.

The NCS CG Nwakuche, described the donation of 4,000 reusable sanitary pads and the launch of a nationwide mental health initiative by NMA as a major step toward improving the health and welfare of inmates across the country.

He commended the association’s consistency and sincerity in fulfilling its commitments, noting that the reusable pads would meet a critical need among female inmates while promoting sustainability and dignity.

“It’s sustainable, cost-effective, and dignifying,” he said.

Nwakuche also hailed the plan to introduce psychiatric evaluations and therapy sessions for inmates nationwide as “A huge breakthrough in ensuring mental well-being,” adding that the initiative would be scaled up to the Ministry level.

He emphasized that inmates are citizens deserving of care and reintegration, saying, “People in our custodial facilities are not the dregs of society. Anybody can find themselves in custody, even for a brief mistake.”

The CG further commended Dr. Akintoye Akindele, whose organization built a Cisco-certified innovation centre at Kuje Correctional Facility, “Our inmates now have Cisco certification from America.

“Other agencies are using the same facility for training. This is the kind of silent transformation happening in the Service,” Nwakuche said, describing the NMA-Diatom collaboration as one that addresses both the physical and psychological dimensions of inmate welfare.

The CG also endorsed Akindele’s proposal for a quarterly retreat for senior officers to strengthen policy review and service delivery.

Lagos NMA warns of strike over unpaid salaries, others in LUTH

Doctors in Lagos State have hinted that they will withdraw their services if the government and hospital authorities fail to address their grievances.

The doctors, under the aegis of the Lagos State branch of the the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) urged authorities to address their concerns about unpaid salaries, arbitrary deductions, and poor welfare conditions.

In a communiqué issued yesterday after its Emergency General Meeting (EGM) held virtually on August 15, the association accused the Lagos State government of “subjecting doctors to financial hardship” and the management of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) of “deliberate neglect” of doctors’ welfare.

The NMA said it would embark on a solidarity strike in September if the state government does not meet the demands of the Medical Guild, which has given a 21-day ultimatum ending today.

NMA Lagos Chairman, Dr. Saheed Babajide Kehinde, said: “Doctors cannot continue to work under conditions where their salaries are arbitrarily deducted, their call duty meals are denied, and their arrears remain unpaid. Enough is enough.”

A faceoff between the doctors and the state government began in April when the Ggovernment, through the Ministry of Finance and the State Treasury Office, made what te doctors called unauthorised deductions from their salaries. Although the deductions were later refunded, the same incident reportedly recurred in July.

Despite protests, the July salaries have not been refunded, prompting the Medical Guild to stage a three-day warning strike between July 28 and 30.

The guild subsequently issued a 21-day ultimatum to the government, demanding immediate refund of the July deductions and full payment of August salaries.

The NMA said it fully supports the guild’s decision.

“If by August 25 these issues remain unresolved, the Medical Guild will down tools indefinitely. NMA Lagos will join in solidarity two weeks later if the government continues to ignore us,” the communiqué stated.

  • Lagos NMA decries ‘unfair’ salary deductions, threatens indefinite strike

Lagos NMA decries ‘unfair’ salary deductions, threatens indefinite strike

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Lagos State chapter, has accused the State Treasury Office (STO) of introducing a “crisis-prone” revised medical salary scale that allegedly resulted in “unfair unacceptable” deductions from doctors’ July 2025 salaries.

In a statement signed on Sunday by its chairman, Dr. Saheed Babajide Kehinde, the association said the deductions remain unresolved despite repeated appeals and a three-day warning strike by the Medical Guild, the umbrella body for doctors employed by the state government.

The NMA noted that the revised salary scale, implemented by the STO, undermines the interest and welfare of medical and dental practitioners in the state’s service.

It warned that unless the deductions are reversed, Lagos could face an indefinite doctors’ strike that may cripple healthcare delivery in public hospitals.

“It is sad that despite all efforts to prevent disruption of healthcare delivery in the state, including the three-day warning strike, the concerned ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) appear unbothered by the notice of indefinite strike action issued by the Medical Guild,” the statement read.

The association called on the Commissioner for Health and all Permanent Secretaries in the health sector to “defend the integrity, dignity, security, and welfare” of doctors in the state.

It also insisted that if doctors embark on an indefinite strike, the state’s health leadership should be held responsible “for failing to ensure the return of the illegal deductions from July 2025 salaries.”

NMA Lagos further urged its members to review their July payslips and compare them with the revised salary scale. The group also warned that the STO’s actions could worsen the “Japa” syndrome, where medical professionals leave the country for better opportunities abroad.

“Enough of the inactions of members of the Medical Profession leading the Lagos State Health Sector. NMA Lagos is resolute on ensuring the return of illegally deducted momey,” the statement concluded.

The Nation reported that the dispute over salary deductions for Lagos State-employed doctors began earlier this year.

In April 2025, the Medical Guild accused the state government of unilaterally cutting doctors’ pay. Following “spirited intervention and strategic engagement,” the deductions were reversed.

However, in July 2025, the issue resurfaced when the State Treasury Office reportedly implemented a revised medical salary scale, resulting in fresh deductions.

The Medical Guild responded by declaring a three-day warning strike from July 28 to 31, demanding an immediate reversal and full payment of 12-month Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) arrears owed to honorary consultants at Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH).

The State Government, through the Ministry of Health, appealed to the Guild to shelve the strike, citing ongoing negotiations and stressing that this was the first such labour action by the Medical Guild in recent years.

  • Doctors’ negotiations with govt raise hope of resolution, says NMA

Doctors’ negotiations with govt raise hope of resolution, says NMA

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has said that although its 21-day ultimatum to the Federal Government still subsists, ongoing negotiations have created a window of hope for an amicable resolution.

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) also reaffirmed its 21-day ultimatum, warning that failure to meet its longstanding demands could result in an industrial action capable of crippling the healthcare system.

Likewise, the Nigerian Association of Medical and Dental Academics (NAMDA) said it might reconsider its position if the government fails to address the issues it has raised.

The warnings, notwithstanding, the NMA and its affiliate associations acknowledged that the government has shown signs of being responsible and responsive in ongoing talks.

Speaking with The Nation, NMA’s National President, Prof. Bala Audu, stated that the association remained open-minded amid ongoing negotiations and would refrain from reactions until the conclusion of talks with the government.

“The government is negotiating with all health workers’ unions. We have to wait for its conclusion before we know what action to take,” he said.

NARD’s President, Dr. Tope Osundara, noted that though the government failed to honour previous agreements, including a collective bargaining agreement (CBA) signed over a decade ago, the current government has shown signs of being a responsive administration.

But he warned angry doctors across the country could down tools if meaningful actions were not taken soon.

“The government is looking into the details of what we submitted as our demands to them. We had meetings where we deliberated on some of the demands before the government, and our congress agreed that we have a subsisting 21-day ultimatum that has been given by the parent body (NMA).”

According to him, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, recently met with the doctors and acknowledged that their demands were neither new nor unreasonable.

“We are not even asking for anything new. We are just telling them to follow exactly what we have in our collective agreement. It is just that they have not been following what we had before.

“For quite some time now – over a decade – we had an agreement with them. This time, when things are not even rosy for us as a country, we felt that to make things better for our people, you have to follow the letter of the collective bargaining agreement. That is exactly what we are asking for.”

Osundara emphasised that the NARD was not asking for anything new, adding: “We’ve not asked for any increment. We’ve not asked for anything obnoxious. We are only asking that they follow the letters of our collective bargaining agreement.”

Commenting on the old collective agreement, Osundara said: “What we’ve been collecting since 2009 is what we’ve been having till date.

“That collective bargaining agreement, which is not even followed strictly to the letter, is what we’ve been receiving as doctors. So, it is even overdue for us to review this.”

Osundara said the coordinating minister had promised to form a new committee to review the CBA, going forward, and NARD hoped he would remain true to that commitment.

“I do believe that he is also going to come through with some of those promises. But if all of these do not come through at the end of the day, within the window of our ultimatum, then I guess we will resume our strike.”

In case the government failed to follow through on its promise, the NARD president said:  “He (the minister) understands the atmosphere. He can palpate the tension within the health sector. It’s not just about doctors now. Everyone in the health sector is asking for improvement in their welfare.”

Also, the National President of the Nigerian Association of Medical and Dental Academics (NAMDA), Dr. Nosa Orhue, confirmed that discussions were also ongoing between academic doctors and the government.

The medical academics, among other demands, are calling for a monthly salary of ₦3 million to align with what their counterparts in the Technical Aide Corps earn while serving in other countries.

“We had a meeting with them on Article 29, with the Federal government. Some of the issues were resolved; some of them are pending. We agreed that within two weeks, we would have another meeting,” he said.

“We are hoping to meet this week, where we will sit down and look at the other issues. After that, we will call the next meeting and address them.

“If they are satisfied, they will call off the committee. If they are not, then they will activate the necessary provisions of our constitution to proceed with the trial set.”
